Assata: An Autobiograhy - Assata Shakur
Tumblr media
Hello friends!
I’m incredibly excited for this week’s recommendation as we start Black August, a month dedicated to highlighting the history of revolutionary Black political prisoners and their comrades in and outside the US. I’ll be highlighting a crucial radical Black woman’s experience today: “Assata: An Autobiography” by Assata Olugbala Shakur.
While Assata needs no introduction, here’s a quick biography before delving into the text. Assata Shakur, born JoAnne Deborah Byron on July 16, 1947, is a New Afrikan revolutionary and former member of the Black Liberation Army and Black Panther Party. She grew up between New York and North Carolina, experiencing the worst of Jim Crow, and was radicalized by the Vietnam War in college. After joining the BLA for a while, she was present in a shootout on a New Jersey Turnpike that left a state trooper dead in 1973. She was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison, but she escaped in 1979 and fled to Cuba, where she was granted political asylum and lives in to this day.
There are too many aspects of Assata's storied history to highlight here, all of which deserve serious reflection. I'll start by noting her incredible bravery and fortitude throughout her harrowing encounters with white supremacy, patriarchal violence, and settler capitalism in and out of prison. As her name shows, she is one who thankfully struggles for the people.
Her position as a socialist revolutionary is important to highlight. She was a part of a militant black freedom struggle rooted in communist thought which sought to upend global imperialism and colonialism to free all peoples, especially black women as some of the most exploited Third World Women (seeing New Afrika as a colony). She also criticized white chauvinist elements of the Left which sadly still exist.
I also want to mention her solidarity with Lolita Lebrón, an incredibly important Puerto Rican nationalist, in prison when no one else would. She knew that decolonization for Puerto Rico was a part of a global struggle for liberation.
I highly recommend everyone read this book to gain first-hand insight into a Black revolutionary's struggle for freedom!

Guess which team I support!
I saw the post about complimenting other teams, so here's mine!
Anaheim Ducks: Still ducks, but at least they’re not waddling anymore. Slowly growing those wings.
Arizona Coyotes: At least they have a loyal fan base, even if it fits inside a Starbucks.
Boston Bruins: Great season, but that playoff curse is harder to shake than Brad Marchand’s chirping.
Buffalo Sabres: Always the underdog, but hey, they're like the Oilers pre-McDavid—on the rise, baby!
Calgary Flames: Flames? It's more like a flicker compared to the Oilers' firepower. It’s OK, Alberta’s still ours.
Carolina Hurricanes: Fast, sure, but they’ve got nothing on McDavid’s warp speed.
Chicago Blackhawks: Bedard is fun, but we’ll remind you that it takes more than one superstar to rival our McDavid and Draisaitl.
Colorado Avalanche: Mackinnon’s great, no doubt, but if McDavid turned up the speed any higher, Nate might need a head start... and a jetpack.
Columbus Blue Jackets: At least they’ve got the coolest name in the league... and, um, yeah, that’s it.
Dallas Stars: Stars may shine, but our Oilers are burning brighter. Yee-haw!
Detroit Red Wings: Historic? Sure. But our present is more exciting, don’t you think?
Edmonton Oilers: We’ve got McDavid, Draisaitl, and enough offensive firepower to make the league tremble. No bias here, just facts.
Florida Panthers: Sure, you had your Cinderella run, but your glass slipper cracked—better luck next time.
Los Angeles Kings: Kings? More like court jesters when McDavid’s on the ice. But hey, we appreciate the entertainment!
Minnesota Wild: A solid team with strong defense, but they sure aren’t ready to face our playoff onslaught.
Montreal Canadiens: Young team, lots of history, but it’ll be another century before you catch our firepower.
Nashville Predators: Cool jerseys, great fans, but you’ll need a lot more to take down the Oil.
New Jersey Devils: Fast and flashy, but McDavid could still skate circles around them blindfolded.
New York Islanders: Defensive wizards, but offense wins games. You’ve seen our highlight reels, right?
New York Rangers: Great in theory, but let’s be honest—nobody’s pulling the spotlight away from Edmonton.
Ottawa Senators: Keep rebuilding, maybe by the time McDavid retires, you’ll be playoff-ready.
Philadelphia Flyers: The Broad Street Bullies are more like baby bulls next to the Oilers’ charging offense.
Pittsburgh Penguins: Old guard, meet the new era. Your time was great, but it’s McDavid’s league now.
San Jose Sharks: Shark Tank? More like a kiddie pool.
Seattle Kraken: Second season was fun, but Edmonton’s got a dynasty in the making—good luck keeping up.
St. Louis Blues: Still riding that 2019 wave, but the tides have shifted north.
Tampa Bay Lightning: The storm’s fading, Tampa. There’s a new powerhouse in town—guess who?
Toronto Maple Leafs: Sure, you have history and a massive fan base, but when was the last time you outscored the Oilers?
Vancouver Canucks: At least the jerseys are nice, right? Yeah, we’re taking that playoff spot.
Vegas Golden Knights: Congrats on the Cup, but let’s be real, you had to avoid us to get it.
Washington Capitals: Ovechkin’s a beast, but nothing out there scares our Oilers’ scoring squad.
Winnipeg Jets: Close neighbors, but we’re the big brothers on this block, and it shows every game.
I couldn't tag dallas and Detroit...

Hello footblr: hockey department! 👉👈 I saw on here a whileeee ago about you comparing crosby/ovechkin to messi/cr7. I always kind of compared ovechkin to neymar with them both being kind of flop artists (trophy wise) but crowdpleasers who really showcase their sport. (Also they’re both set to break Gretsky/Pele’s goalscoring records before they retire 😋 ) I didn’t grow up watching hockey or football so thats kinda my own uninformed opinion and I was wondering your thoughts. Is there a better Neymar equivalent in hockey that I can look out for? I haven’t watched hockey since leaving DC but I’m in North Carolina now so… really considering jumping on the bandwagon for next season.
hi anon, i think this is one of my favourite asks i've ever received, so first of all thank you so much for this!
(the rest is below the cut if you want to read my analysis! sorry this is so long anon)
it's hockey season! ask me questions!
when i was comparing messi&cr7 to sid&ovi, i was mostly comparing the rivalry not the individual players. the rivalry is similar in the sense that since like 2005ish, they have been competing for the same titles not only with their club teams but with their countries and individually. they also have very similar play styles, messi as a false nine/cam who produces play and assists (as well as scoring goals) matches well with sid, who is a center who creates plays and assists (as well as scoring goals). cr7 as a winger who primarily scores goals, although he does assist and create plays occasionally (although more when he was younger then now), is very similar to ovi, who is also primarily a goal-scoring winger.
neymar, however, is kind of a thing of his own? i don't think there's any really good comparison for a skiller who is arguably the third best of his generation who is leading his country. the closest comparison i can think of is connor mcdavid, he is a skill player who is currently the best in the world, and he has the expectation to lead canada to greatness but he hasn't been able to play at international competitions for reasons that aren't his fault. if you are looking for skill players who play beautiful hockey with lots of tricks, may i recommend highlights from the sedin twins, connor mcdavid, connor bedard, and trevor zegras? they have some gorgeous plays and some impressive skills that are so fun to watch.
in terms of teams, if you are in north carolina now i truly recommend the carolina hurricanes! they are a really well built team, who plays gorgeous clean hockey with great defensive work. technically, as a team, they are the most fun to watch for me because visually, they are hockey tactics in motion and i adore that. stunning, stunning team to watch, and they are slated to do quite well so they will go far! i am slightly biased as i recently jumped onto the canes bandwagon while doing research for another friend here, so i have a lot of canes content on my blog if you scroll (or you can dm/ask me anything about them! honestly i love talking shop). if you're looking for a team with many blorbos you can obsess over, the pittsburgh penguins are a great team for that! many players you can obsess over, and shoutout to pensblr fr i love it over there they are so much fun to interact with. i always like to advertise the canucks on here, i think they are a fun team to watch! very high scoring, lots of skilled play although a bit sloppy. lots of drama, lots of goals, what more could you ask for in a team! and for one more option, the florida panthers are quite scrappy and surprisingly good, their entire team is like an underdog that somehow keeps winning! they're fun to watch and though i am not a fan, i am keeping half an eye on them after their playoff performance last year.
those are my recommendations! please let me know if you have any questions about teams or players, i enjoyed this so much! if you decide on a team, let me know if you want links to watch!

Winter 2024! (newsletter)
(a copypasta from the newsletter, saved here for ease)
Happy 2024 ! :) ✩
Here’s a round-up of everything I’m working on in the upcoming Winter season ❄️
2023 Highlights →
Octavia Butler AI with Dr. Beth Coleman
This was my second (and a half) year working with Beth on her AI project inspired by Octavia Butler’s writing. With a bespoke AI Image GAN, we created images series inspired by Alice Coltrane, oceanic jellyfish, and Black Panther Party gatherings. Images were reproduced as oil paintings, and documented through a web archive, an exhibition and symposium, and (most excitingly) a published book.
UNCG
I returned to the College of Visual and Performing Arts at University of North Carolina Greensboro as an instructor of two classes, Intro to Web Design & Professional Practices. The latter focused on portfolio & CV building to support students as they graduate into careers as working artists.
Artivive AR Residency
In April, I wrapped up a year-long mentorship residency with Artivive, an AR platform focused on artists. My first time using Blender, I worked with my mentor Agnes Michalczyk, and produced an AR sculpture PaperCuts that has since exhibited in Vienna at Artivive headquarters and in the Geary Art Crawl 2023.
InterAccess
First complete year with InterAccess as Programming Manager (and first day job!) Very grateful for the opportunity to work full-time in a permanent arts position. Highlights include starting an Open HDMI event series, an after hours event inviting visual artists to plug into InterAccess’s in-house immersive projection system, IA 360°,  in an open deck style. Several Open HDMI events of the same name have been popping up around the new media scene since the first IA event in April! (1) (2)

I’ll be showing a series of remixed recipes on acrylic, Ju/uu/ook,as part of a symposium focused on ✩FOOD✩ (including food production vs insecurity, cultural dishes’ role in nostalgia and tradition, and consumerism vs consumption)
Ju/uu/ook looks at the shifts in traditional recipes - whether through generations, miscommunication, or flirtation with shared or adjacent cultures - as something to be welcomed, rather than lamented as culture lost.

Recipes for juuk, char siu, and joong were run through a custom Python script, randomizing the ingredient measurements and instruction order to create a copy, reminiscent of the dish, but nonsensical. The new recipe was then written by hand with traditional calligraphy tools, digitally scanned with physical distortion, cut into acrylic, and then handpainted once again.

New Post has been published on https://www.packernet.com/blog/2023/10/25/carolina-panthers-vs-green-bay-packers-a-tale-of-two-rebuilds/
Carolina Panthers vs. Green Bay Packers: A Tale of Two Rebuilds
The NFL is a league known for change, and the 2023 season has provided a prime example of that with two of its most storied franchises in transition. The Carolina Panthers and the Green Bay Packers, two teams taking divergent approaches to a post-franchise quarterback world. Let’s delve into the intricacies of these ongoing rebuilds.
The Carolina Panthers: Bryce Young’s Rocky Introduction
Bryce Young has had quite the introduction to the NFL. In just five games, Young has completed 115 of 182 passes, boasting a completion rate of 63.2 percent. However, the impressive stat comes with caveats: six touchdowns to four interceptions. The rookie’s mobility has been evident, having rushed for 65 yards on eight carries. But this same mobility has sometimes landed him in trouble, with him being sacked a whopping 16 times already.
Bryce Young’s Inconsistent Performances
Young’s game-by-game performances offer a snapshot into his challenges and potential. While the recent 42-21 loss against the Dolphins on October 15, where Young completed 23 of 38 passes for 217 yards and one touchdown, paints a somber picture, it isn’t all bleak. The Detroit Lions game showcased the promise, with Young making 25 completions on 41 attempts, accumulating 247 yards and three commendable touchdowns. But, two interceptions in that game also underlined his rookie nature.
Beyond the Quarterback: The Offensive Line’s Struggles
It’s not just Bryce Young. The Panthers’ offensive lineup has faced its own demons. The inability to protect Young consistently, execute pivotal plays, maintain momentum during drives, and the increasing frequency of sacks have thrown off any attempts at establishing an offensive tempo.
Green Bay Packers: Jordan Love in the Post-Rodgers World
Stepping into the shoes of Aaron Rodgers is no small task, but Jordan Love has been trying. With 111 completions out of 193 attempts (a 57.5 percent completion rate), Love’s numbers in six games highlight a mix of promise and struggle. His touchdown-to-interception ratio stands at 10:7, a figure that needs improvement. On the ground, Love has 130 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries, showcasing an added dimension to his game. Still, 10 sacks over these games point to vulnerabilities.
Evaluating Love’s Game Days
On Sunday’s game against the Broncos, Love completed 21 of 31 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Adding to his stat line, he also recorded 21 rushing yards on three carries. However, not every game has been smooth sailing. The game against the Las Vegas Raiders, for instance, was a challenge. Love’s three interceptions and struggles with downfield passing were evident, resulting in a 17-13 loss.
The Packers’ Current Stance
After a promising start to the season, the Packers are now in a challenging position. Following the blow by the Detroit Lions in Week 4 and subsequent losses, they have dropped three games in a row. Currently, they are situated in third place in the NFC North, trailing the Lions by 2.5 games.
The real game-changer lies in the upcoming launch of mobile and online sports betting in 2024. While fans eagerly await the kickoff, they’re also keeping an eye on North Carolina sports betting promos that could add an extra layer of thrill to their game-day experience.
Drawing Parallels: Panthers vs. Packers Rebuild
Both teams are going through their respective rebuilds, but their strategies and challenges are unique. While the Panthers have placed faith in a fresh-faced Bryce Young, introducing a veteran like Andy Dalton as his mentor and as someone who can steady the ship if needed, the Packers are leaning heavily on Jordan Love, a player who sat behind an MVP quarterback for three years.
Despite their varying strategies, both teams face some similar challenges, especially when it comes to protecting their young quarterbacks and developing a consistent offensive rhythm.
However, the season is still ongoing, and both teams have time to evolve. Whether the Panthers’ strategy of blending youth with experience will trump the Packers’ approach of leveraging a three-year understudy remains to be seen.
Evaluating the Success of the Rebuild Approaches
In the competitive world of the NFL, rebuilding projects are tricky. Success is typically measured in terms of wins, player development, and the overall trajectory of the team. Looking at the Carolina Panthers and Green Bay Packers, their respective approaches to rebuilding at the quarterback position offer intriguing insights.
Carolina Panthers: The Youth Experiment
The Panthers’ decision to draft Bryce Young and immediately thrust him into the starting role, supplemented by the veteran experience of Andy Dalton, was a bold move. However, with the team currently standing at 0-6, the approach appears to be struggling.
Pros:
Bryce Young’s raw talent is evident. His games against teams like the Detroit Lions highlight his potential, where he has shown the ability to read defenses and make difficult throws.
Introducing a veteran like Dalton can potentially offer Young a mentor figure, providing guidance and allowing the rookie some breathing space.
Areas of Improvement for Bryce Young:
Decision-making under pressure: The number of interceptions and sacks suggests Young sometimes struggles when under duress.
Consistency: Flashes of brilliance need to be more regular occurrences, reducing game-altering mistakes.
Green Bay Packers: Leveraging the Understudy
Jordan Love, after studying for three years under one of the game’s greats, Aaron Rodgers, was expected to have a smoother transition. With a record of 2-4, the Packers are doing slightly better than the Panthers, but there’s room for growth.
Pros:
Love’s experience sitting behind Rodgers has likely contributed to a slightly better understanding of NFL-level defenses and game scenarios.
His mobility adds an extra dimension to the Packers’ offense, something Rodgers didn’t typically offer.
Areas of Improvement for Jordan Love:
Handling adversity: Games like the one against the Las Vegas Raiders indicate that Love struggles when the initial game plan is disrupted.
Deep-ball accuracy: Love’s difficulties with downfield passes suggest this is an area requiring focused practice.
The Verdict: Which Rebuild is More Successful?
If success is purely based on wins and losses, the Packers have a slight edge at this point in the season. The advantage of having Jordan Love learn under Aaron Rodgers seems to be bearing some fruit, as reflected in their two wins. The Panthers, while showing potential with Bryce Young under center, are grappling with the inconsistencies and growth pains typical of starting a rookie quarterback.
However, it’s essential to note that both teams are in the early stages of their respective rebuilds, and the trajectories of both quarterbacks can shift dramatically based on coaching, surrounding talent, and individual player growth.
In conclusion, while the Packers’ rebuild appears slightly more successful in the immediate term, the true evaluation of success for both teams will likely be more evident in the coming seasons.

[ad_1] Since 2018, the Carolina Panthers have had three more head coaches than they’ve had playoff wins—and they’ve had three head coaches since 2018.(Oh, and that’s not even counting their two interim head coaches.)Nonetheless, a recent study highlighted by BetCarolina.com found that the franchise’s fans are amongst the most obsessive in the entire NFL. Using the results from Statista’s 2022 survey regarding “attitudes” of teams, one that polled 1,239 subjects, the site noted that the Carolina faithful responded rather positively to the following pair of statements:29 percent of Panthers fans in the study had positive replies to the first statement, which was tied for the second-highest mark, while 23 percent had positive replies to the second. That gave the fanbase an average positive response of 26 percent—the fifth-highest overall. The only fanbases that have finer rose-colored glasses include those of the Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys.RelatedPanthers fans react to Day 3 picks of Chandler Zavala and Jammie RobinsonScenes from Panthers QB Bryce Young arriving in CharlotteBears WR DJ Moore clears up comment about Panthers fans' 'love' for himStory originally appeared on Panthers Wire [ad_2] Source link

Super Bowl LVII: Eagles'Hasson Reddick reflects
Tumblr media
GLENDALE/PHOENIX (News4usonline) – Coming into Super Bowl LVII, Philadelphia Eagles edge rusher Hasson Reddick was going to have an imprint on the game. One way or another. One of the more feared pass rushers in the NFL during the 2022 season, Reddick left his mark on the game, but not the way that he and the Eagles envisioned. Reddick held the keys to the Eagles falling short of their ultimate goal or being instrumental in leading Philadelphia’s menacing pass rush in putting pressure on Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. That goal flamed out.
Tumblr media
PHILADELPHIA, PA - JANUARY 29: Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Haason Reddick (7) waves to the crowd during the NFC Championship game between the San Fransisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles on January 29, 2023 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA. (Photo by Andy Lewis/Icon Sportswire) Reddick wound up with just one tackle, two quarterback hits, and zero sacks. As a team, the Eagles did not record a single sack of Mahomes and wound up losing Super Bowl LVII, 38-35. “They had good game plan, a lot of chip in, things like that," Reddick said about Kansas City's blocking scheme after the game. "For the most part getting the ball off fast, the game plan worked, that’s a credit to them.” It’s been no secret all season that Reddick was the drive behind the Eagles’ relentless defensive pressure. Reddick recorded 16 quarterback sacks during the 2022 NFL season. As a team, the Eagles sat down opposing quarterbacks 70 times for the season, 78 if you count the postseason. So not getting to Mahomes was more than a little frustrating to Reddick. The poor condition of the field didn't help, he added. "I mean, I slipped a couple of times," Reddick remarked. "I felt like I had a good pass rush, felt like I beat my man, try to turn the corner and couldn’t turn the corner. Like I said, I’m not making excuses but you watch the film and you can see when I slipped. At the end of the day, they still won." Reddick took his frustration to another level, calling the State Farm Stadium football field "the worst field that I’ve ever played on." The simplicity of winning or losing Super Bowl LVII hinged on whether or not Reddick and his comrades were going to get to Mahomes. That didn't happen for the NFC champs. Nonetheless, Reddick, who signed a multi-year deal with Philadelphia in the offseason, said the Eagles had a great run. "When you have the type of season that we had, you want to end on a high note," said Reddick. "You get this far, you want one, but unfortunately that’s not what happened. So, we still have some growth to do and we all grow. We believed in each other all year, considered us all as family, this loss shouldn’t deter that.”     Wrecking ball in the backfield@Haason7Reddick | #FlyEaglesFly For more highlights, visit https://t.co/Sgw2lqUZ2U pic.twitter.com/vevnZuiskS— Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) February 17, 2023 Aside from the offseason pickup of Reddick, the Eagles put themselves in a position to play in the Super Bowl by adding key players to be part of this super run. Wide receiver A. J. Brown, who the Eagles acquired through a trade with the Tennessee Titans, is perhaps the biggest name on that list. Brown and Reddick have dramatically changed the trajectory of the Eagles since their arrival. In the case of Reddick that would be extending the number of seasons that he has recorded double-digits in sacks. Before he came to Philadelphia, Reddick spent several seasons with the Arizona Cardinals before playing for a year with the Carolina Panthers and then becoming dominant in his first season with the Eagles. So what does Reddick have in common with all three teams? After going to waste as an inside linebacker for the Cardinals, Reddick spent his last season with Arizona rushing the quarterback. He excelled by coming up with 12.5 sacks during the 2020 season. In his only season with the Panthers in 2021, Reddick continued to show his rushing prowess with 11.5 sacks. The number of quarterback drops he had during the 2022 season put him in the company of dominant pass rushers like Von Miller of the Buffalo Bills and Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams. Reddick’s success on the field for the Eagles has not been lost on the former Temple University star. The inside space of Philadelphia's locker room has been a haven, he said. “It’s like a brotherhood here,” Reddick remarked. “That’s not to say that I haven’t had that anywhere else. Like here the day would be over instead of going home, guys are in our player’s lounge, playing ping-pong, playing pool, still around each other, connecting with each other…having fun, laughing and joking.”
Tumblr media
PHILADELPHIA, PA - JANUARY 29: Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Haason Reddick (7) gestures to the crowd during the NFC Championship game between the San Fransisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles on January 29, 2023 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA. (Photo by Andy Lewis/Icon Sportswire) Having a loose locker room happens when you’re winning and beating the pants off your opponents like the Eagles. Because of the top-level play of Reddick and the rest of the defense, the Eagles managed to crush the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers in their first two playoff games. Of course, Reddick was at the center of attention in both wins coming up with two sacks against San Francisco and a takedown against the Giants. The devastation of Reddick’s relentless motor to get to the quarterback was on prime display when he got to San Francisco signal-caller Brock Purdy early in the NFC Championship game and knocked him out of the contest.  During the season, Reddick recorded two sacks in a game four times. Reddick credits the advice and encouragement from Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Chandler Jones, another passer that has helped him with his game. Before moving on to Las Vegas, Jones played for the Cardinals and helped give Reddick an inside track on how to be a great pass rusher. “He was the first guy to like take me under his wing," Reddick said. "Chand just showed me love. From day one, he showed me mad love. Always supportive and everything. He was like, 'I've watched you. You a baller.' He was like, 'I'm happy to be here with you. I'm happy to be able to play with you.' That's crazy. I'm looking like, you Chandler Jones talking about you're to be playing with me. Man, I'm happy to be playing with you."       Featured Image: PHILADELPHIA, PA - Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Haason Reddick (7) looks on during the game between the New Orleans Saints and the Philadelphia Eagles on January 1, 2023 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA.
