“Oscar Moreno is a Mexican-born screenwriter and director who just had his first feature released on Tubi. It’s called ENTE. It’s a creepy movie. The goal of this conversation is to make you click on Tubi real fast, so here’s another link to ENTE, free to stream now on Tubi.
Topics include: a working definition of “border horror”, going back and forth between Ciudad Juarez and El Paso, real-looking people on a movie screen, the reality of being a fully bilingual writer in 2023, the great screenwriter strike of 2023, shooting on a micro-budget, the film Nuevo Orden and “being judged in the court of public opinion”, composer Carolyn Koch, “letting real life touch your own work”, “trying to figure out the smallest scale version of your ideas possible and from there, any additions that may seem extravagant are placed on the story because the story actually needs them”, fictional projects getting shelved because similar stories end up happening in real life with grim consequences, and the satisfaction of accomplishing your goals despite the odds.
ENJOY.”

BIO
Jeremiah Jedediah Mitchell, aka "JJ" was born in Birmingham, Alabama to a family that was nothing of note. His father worked at the steel mill and his mother was a CNA at a longterm care facility.
Jeremiah excelled at his athletic endeavors in high school, but found himself bored with his surroundings. After one semester at BSC, he joined the marines and found his stride. He had a knack for leadership roles and worked well under pressure- enough that he began to attract lucrative offers from PMCs.
But Jeremiah had his sights set higher.
Unfortunately, his humvee was hit by an IED during a tour in Iraq and he lost his leg from the knee down. After his honorable discharge, he started his own PMC, Falcon Company. Such were their escapades that they often attracted the ire of the Black Dragon and various outworld threats.
After a particularly brutal run-in with the Black Dragon, Sonya Blade approached Mitchell and offered him a chance to do something bigger with Falcon Company.
Defend Earthrealm.
The Special Forces has provided him with state of the art prosthetics for his leg, and he considers the injury an upgrade.
Mitchell tolerates Blade and the others, but is biding his time until it's his turn to lead in full. Falcon Company often finds controversy for their fast and loose play with the rulebook.
SHIPS

He collects antique guns and prides himself on being able to restore them.
His mother is dead, but his father is still alive.
Can play the acoustic guitar quite well.
He does deal with phantom pain in his limb, which he solves with whiskey.
Borrowed most of this template from @bdfightclub thank u beloved fandom creator. HUUUUUUGE shoutout to @bihanspookies for helping with the name and also letting me always borrow Alora <3

Lockdown CO2 and structural roots of the climate emergency
Tumblr media
About 4 billion people are in pandemic lockdown, but the forecast drop in CO2 emissions for 2020 is about 5%; to head off a global temperature rise of more than 1.5C, that number needs to be 7.6%.
https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-co2-isnt-falling-more-during-a-global-lockdown/
As Murtaza M Hussain wrote, "This suggests emission levels relate less to individual behavior than larger structural factors only addressable through regulation."
https://twitter.com/MazMHussain/status/1256272121208213505
Emergencies have a well-known leftist bias, which is why the right has such a hard time dealing with them, despite its worship of "rationalism" and its belief that "reality doesn't care about your feelings."
Take Charles Koch: he became a billionaire by making a ton of long-term investments in hydrocarbon extraction and processing technologies with really long amortization schedules, and grew the business he inherited from his father a thousandfold.
People like Koch are the subject of endless right wing worship that singles out his patience as a kind of natural gift that suits him to rule - the market gave Koch a lot of money because Koch has the foresight and reason to allocate capital well.
It's why there's so much fetishization of the "marshmallow test," which purports to show that poor people are, by dint of some intrinsic deficiency, incapable of the mature foresight that is needed to govern themselves wisely.
(of course, reality is very different - poor kids "fail" the marshmallow test because experience teaches them that promised opportunities rarely materialize, and the smart money is on seizing any chance you get rather than waiting for jam tomorrow)
https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2018/6/6/17413000/marshmallow-test-replication-mischel-psychology
You know who REALLY fails the real-world marshmallow test? Charles Koch. Mister Long-Game can't see the value of taking a short-term hit to retool for renewables, even if the cost of failing to do so is civilization l collapse and a possible end of our species.
You know who REALLY fails the real-world marshmallow test? Charles Koch. Mister Long-Game can't see the value of taking a short-term hit to retool for renewables, even if the cost of failing to do so is civilization l collapse and a possible end of our species.
That's the root of idiocies like the Mayor of Las Vegas insisting that she can declare her city open and the "free market" will produce safety guidelines that keep people from dying.
https://pluralistic.net/2020/04/23/riot-baby/#carolyn-goodman
And it's why the right has to tie itself in knots with ideas like "state capacity libertarianism" to figure out how to preserve its ideological purity without being roasted alive by climate change.
https://pluralistic.net/2020/03/21/most-dangerous-ghost/#disaster-socialism
Human beings have a shared microbial destiny, a shared world, and a shared climate. Selfishness is not pareto optimal, especially when it comes to commons.
Indeed, the "Tragedy of the Commons" was a fraud designed to justify the seizure of commons and the subjugation of their users as a preferable alternative to not being selfish.
https://thebaffler.com/latest/first-as-tragedy-then-as-fascism-amend
The climate lesson of the lockdown is that climate change is not a matter of personal responsibility. Even if everyone does NOTHING, just sits as still as possible and buy as little as possible, we will not head off the crisis.
If you had any doubt about whether diligent recycling, ditching your car, and never boarding another airplane could save the world, now it should be dispelled.
We need structural change: to how we generate power, how we grow food, how we transport goods.
The role for individuals to achieve that change is to band together in movements that demand the investment of capital and resources in refashioning our built world so that it continues to sustain human life.
If the survival of the human race is beyond the reach of individual choices and market transactions, that doesn't mean that the human race shouldn't survive. It means we should find new tools to manage our resource allocation.
The Cowboy Economist has a great analogy about the doctrine that holds that if markets can't do something, that thing is immoral and shouldn't be attempted: he likens this to a carpenter who refuses to use screwdrivers, and only uses hammers.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCL9PHjlPQ5wq0CD6vAibxYg/videos
"Sorry, fella, I'm a hammer guy. That thing you want built needs screws and screws are WRONG, so you're wrong for wanting one."
Markets are tools for capital allocation, not moral arbiters. They can't solve all our allocation problems, especially these existential threats.

Our hormones tell us to eat less
Or, technically, “Amylin acts in the lateral dorsal tegmental nucleus to regulate energy balance through GABA signaling,” by David J. Reiner, Elizabeth G. Mietlicki-Baase, Diana R. Olivos, Lauren E. McGrath, Derek J. Zimmer, Kieran Koch-Laskowski, Joanna Krawczyk, Christopher A. Turner, Emily E. Noble, Joel D. Hahn, Heath D. Schmidt, Scott E. Kanoski, and Matthew R. Hayes.
What do we know? The hormone amylin is released from the pancreas after a meal and travels to parts of the brain where it binds to amylin receptors to tell you that you are full.
What don’t we know? Amylin receptors are expressed in many parts of the brain, but what are the specific brain regions in which amylin acts to affect how much you eat?
What this study shows: Amylin acts in a brain region called the lateral dorsal tegmental nucleus (LDTg) to tell you are full and decrease how much you eat.
What we can do in the future because of this study: We have identified an underappreciated brain region involved in hormonal control of feeding. This finding helps create a fuller picture of how hormones that are made in organs like the stomach, intestines, and pancreas affect how much you eat.
Why you should care: With over a third of the US population considered obese, it is very important to understand how our body and brain affect how much we eat. If we can understand how hormones act in the brain to make us feel hungry or full, we can potentially create new treatments for obesity.
Brief for non-neuroscientists
The hormone amylin is released from the pancreas following a meal and has been traditionally thought to act exclusively in the hindbrain to decrease food intake. Recent findings have broadened the perspective of amylin's action in the brain to extend beyond the hindbrain to midbrain regions classically associated with reward. Here, the authors show that amylin acts in the lateral dorsal tegmental nucleus (LDTg), which connects the hindbrain and midbrain, to reduce food intake. The authors show that amylin in the LDTg decreases food intake by suppressing meal size without causing nausea. Knocking down amylin receptors in the LDTg increases food intake and body weight. Amylin receptor-expressing neurons in the LDTg make the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA and blocking GABA receptors prevents the ability of amylin to decrease food intake. Together, these data demonstrate that amylin in the LDTg controls food intake.
Brief for neuroscientists
The pancreatic-derived hormone amylin is classically thought to decrease food intake by activating neurons in the area postrema. Recent literature has shown that amylin can also act in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) to modulate the mesolimbic dopamine system and reduce food intake. The lateral dorsal tegmental nucleus (LDTg) sends reciprocal projections to the VTA as well as other nuclei important for feeding and reward and expresses receptors for many energy balance relevant signals. The LDTg may represent an understudied hub that potentially mediates energy balance. Here, the authors show that the LDTg expresses all the components of the amylin receptor and LDTg amylin receptor activation decreases food intake by suppressing meal size without producing nausea. LDTg amylin receptor knockdown increases food intake and body weight. Amylin receptor-expressing neurons in the LDTg are GABAergic and LDTg GABA receptor signaling is required for the hypophagic effects of LDTg amylin receptor. Together, these data suggest that amylin receptor signaling in the LDTg controls energy balance through GABA signaling.
