Welding anon here, I technically didn’t complete the program bc I am missing a single credit, which is fine by me because I ended up switching up and going into agriculture instead, which I am much happier to be in and I just got my degree for it. I don’t regret taking that program because I enjoyed the work (best I can describe it? I always pictured him as a welder bc ye he has massive beefy arms and him being an explosives expert, I could see him enjoying the sparks and the process of creating something durable and strong. Both require a good bit of math, (not to mention shooting math which I still struggle with too) Just seems like a dude who finds fulfillment in difficult, heavy precision work. I did also dabble in wood working (not carpentry. If ur curious I was making bee hives bc I was a bee keeper for a time and my company was so small I had to learn how to do everything) price is so carpenter core. He would smell like freshly cut wood, just a bit smokey and strong. I can just picture saw dust absolutely filling his pockets and trailing it around everywhere by accident. firstly, the guys on your course SUCK for making you feel isolated. i get it on some level as i've been the only non-cis person on-site before. i know i've been lucky as i am technically a plumbing nepo-baby so any other shit has been shut down hard by my mum but more often than not she's the only woman on-site. thankfully she's got something like 40 years experience working with the guys she works with so she knows everyone and their children (and all the gossip, tradies are incorrigible gossips and i love it so much).

secondly, fuck yeah to finding something you love doing! i'm incredibly proud of you for getting your degree! go you! and also you're an incredibly talented multi-skilled individual, be proud of yourself for all the skills you have (welding, woodworking, beekeeping!!!).

thirdly, it's official you've converted me into a welder!soap person. you're absolutely correct. he would love welding. sparks + maths + methodical + challenging = welder!soap. he'd be so cheesy about giving you a metal flower bouquet too. excuse me for a minute while i think about sweaty soap with big beefy arms. oooooh boy 😵‍💫

finally, you are entirely correct that carpenter!price would smell so good. ugh, the smell of cut wood is addictive and definitely one of my most favourite smells in the world (i am that person that lingers in the timber yard in a B&Q just to get a whiff of the cut pine). carpenter!price would love his sweetheart fussing over his callouses and rubbing hand cream into his hands before bed every night, you can't tell me he wouldn't. i think the fact that he smells so good definitely makes up for the fact that you'd be fishing pencils and sawdust out of his pockets every time you did laundry. plus you'd have the most beautiful kitchen cabinets that are the envy of all your friends just because he wanted to give the kitchen a "spruce up" (side note: never trust a tradie to do their own DIY, you WILL end up living in a half-finished construction site for over 2 years).

"I think this was the first part I've had that quite frankly I couldn't hide behind much as an actor. Malcolm's the straight guy. He wasn't the Lord of Darkness [played by Keating in The Immortal ]. He wasn't some camp bisexual ghost. The parts I've played, particularly in front of a camera here in America, have all been real character acting. For this, I had to suit up and bring Dominic as best I could to the screen.

"Malcolm initially wasn't particularly funny - he was quite dry and just an officer. You had to be a man, if you will. All that sort of stacked up and I went, 'My God, am I enough to play this part?' I think most actors get that - 'You mean it's just me? Oh, God, that won't be enough.' A year later and I've got over quite a lot of that fear. I'm very happy with the marriage of what they've written and what I've brought to it."

Keating has drawn directly on his own past for aspects of the character. "I was talking about this the other day with my mum on the phone. Malcolm Reed is basically me when I was 17 and about to join the army. I was a very keen cadet officer at my public school in England and so that's who he is. I went to visit the Scots Dragoon Guards in Germany, Osnabrook for six weeks. I came back understanding that I quite liked playing at being in the army, but I didn't really want it for real. I was going to go off to university and read law," he laughs. "It took me a few years after university to figure out that actually, what I really wanted was to be an actor."

While Keating was initially excited about joining the Star Trek franchise, he didn't anticipate that playing Reed would provide such profound acting satisfaction in he first year. "It's rare, to be honest. I've done alot of plays in London when I first started that had a sort of human content that somehow lifted the soul, and it's been a long time since I had that kind of creative boost, certainly with another actor."

However, all this and more was provided in the episode Shuttlepod One , in which Reed and Trip believe their shipmates have perished and they are slowly dying of oxygen deprivation. "Brannon [Braga] went away and wrote this wonderful script. I think I got the script like 10 days before the first shoot day, which is rare. It's usually the night before. Connor [Trinneer] and I had about a week of going round to each other's houses and we rehearsed maybe three or four times together, and when we came together, the luxury of it was that we were so off-book [ie. memorised the dialogue].

"What I wanted to show with Malcolm Reed in that episode is that although he's a little curt and a little short and a little British and a little uptight and possibly sometimes rude and a bit clipped, there's a reason. There is a beating heart that is perhaps hidden by a somewhat more brittle exterior. And then, when you play a scene, you go on set with an idea of how it's going to map out, but you really have to go with what happens on the day. Connor will say a line for me in a way that I never imagined and it makes me say a line back to him in a way I never would have imagined, and that's exciting when it takes on a life of its own."

The actors also received more input than usual from episode director David Livingston. "TV directors often don't really direct you at all as an actor," Keating points out. "That's not to say that visiting directors don't come over and suggest a way you might play a scene, but generally speaking, they're looking at a shot, they're looking at a camera movement, and they kind of leave the acting up to you. But I worked very closely with David Livingston doing Shuttlepod One .There was alot of to-ing and fro-ing between us and we had a mutual trust and you know, it worked out really well.

"Just as an acting experience in front of a camera, I'd never had anything like that, and it really fired me up. It would be nice if we could do that once or twice a season, if we can look into the soul,the depth of the man like that. Rick Berman promises me that there's some good stuff coming an I'm pretty happy with where it all settles."

But with the good always comes the bad and Keating had to endure the dreaded Star Trek make-up when Reed was pretending to be a Suliban, in Detained . "It was a hell of a week," he says recalling the complicated make-up. "You've got a full helmet piece that goes to the top of the eyebrows and then all the way across the head and down the back of your neck to your upper back. And that glues in place. And then they've got two cheek bits, one nose and a mouthpiece, and then a bunch of neck pieces which sort of crisscross around your neck to cover that. And then there's a lot of airbrushing and it takes about three hours to put it on. It's quite a process. I have to say, a day in that, is a day well paid. I did a Buffy [ the Vampire Slayer ] once and had put on some vampire pieces, but nothing like that. It doesn't get worse than that," he laughs.

There have also been moments of pure playfulness. "Years ago, Scott [Bakula] did a musical commercial for Canada Dry ginger ale," Keating explains. "He was in a tux with a bunch of dancing girls and guys behind him, singing some really musical theatre song." Keating bursts into the verse: "He's goin' over to Canada Dry/He never knows it,but he doesn't try.' It was a real 70's 'Oh my God, it's a living' kind of gig.  [Enterprise line producer] Brad Yacobian had got some bottles made up, and they looked just like old Canada Dry. Scott got called to the set to start shooting this scene we'd rehearsed, and there was a bottle sitting on his chair and as he walked in and saw the bottle, Ben who runs all the monitors on the bridge, hit the start button and the commercial played on every monitor on the bridge - including the huge plasma screen at the back in the situation room - and we all started dancing around singing this song with bottles in our hands. You should have seen his face!"

Off the set, Dominic Keating is enjoying the convention circuit and has been contemplating doing some fringe theatre in London during the next hiatus. However, above all he is looking forward to next season. "It's been the most extraordinary year, it's an amazing bunch of people to work with, cast and crew, and I'm really, really grateful."
