And if you're in the SE, we have I SPYthon, to help the Murray Darling carpet python:
Just as a note to any aspiring biologists and/or casual biology fans: please do not be intimidated by 'professional' biologists! We are all huge nerds! I've just spent 3 days surrounded by experts in my field, and given half the opportunity they will gladly gush about their research/animals, and answer any and all questions with probably more information than you ever wanted to know. If you ever get a chance, I highly encourage you to attend conferences, seminars, or talks in your area-- your local biologist will love you, and will likely even have opportunities for you to volunteer with them if that's something you're into!

Broke down at the St. Louis NARBC show and ended up this little girl! Her name is Echidna, and she is a Coastal Carpet Python.
She would like the world to know that she is spicy and spring-loaded!

nothing ruins my immersion more than media that wants me to think ball pythons are scary. you mean the animal who's top defense mechanism is Become Rock? the other common alternative i see are fuckn corn snakes. corn snakes. yk. the snake thats skinnier than a wide belt with the defense mechanism of Become Stinky.
not scary! and this scene is now hilarious to me because of how Not Scary the snakes they chose are.
#like you could at least pick some carpet pythons or something! ive seen a few Brazilian rainbow boas and those look great!#i can at least suspend my disbelief with less common species#i Cannot do that with the Most Common Pet Snakes#that are in every pet store sitting there like :3#i understand that actor safety is a concern but consider!#we shouldn't be covering people in multiple snakes for the sake of the shot#but that's another conversation#crow.txt#reptiblr

We had an unexpected guest today.
Two weeks out from winter is not exactly when you’d expect to see wild diamond pythons but this guy showed up in our backyard today anyway and narrowly missed being a snack for my mum’s dogs. Our neighbours are clearing some overgrown trees and plants from their boundary fence, and we think he must have been hibernating in one of the trees that got cut down. My partner and I spotted him and pulled mum’s dogs away, while mum (aka the hand he has a death-grip on in these photos) caught him and relocated him down by the river, well away from the area being cleared.
I’m definitely adding “only one in the family with snake handling and catching experience despite owning dogs with no self-preservation instincts” as another reason why I need an off-road power wheelchair when I talk to the NDIS - the only reason I didn’t go get him myself was because I couldn’t get through the grass due to the rain making the ground too soft for my wheelchair. Mum’s got a rather impressive bruise from this and I don’t want to risk her or my partner getting hurt when I’m more equipped to be the one doing the relocation.
ID 1: a photo of a diamond python, a mostly dark brown snake with pale yellow spots on every scale of varying sizes with a broad head, and a cream-coloured underbelly. It is coiled around the arm of a woman wearing a teal shirt with her thumb on the back of its head. /end ID 1
ID 2: a photo of the same snake from a slightly different angle. /End ID 2
ID 3: a photo of the python climbing a broken tree /End ID 3

As an aside, I don't know why Clint recommends a Super Dwarf Retic over a carpet python (Morelia sp). Reticulated pythons (Malayopython reticulatus) are banned in a lot of places and regulations don't make exceptions for subspecies or localities; and often have clauses that don't recognize taxonomic splits to prevent people from looking for legal loopholes. (It's highly unlikely reticulated pythons will ever be legal in Alberta and elsewhere regardless of classification.)

I did not know Gargoyle Geckos (Rhacodactylus auriculatus) can regrow their entire tail.
I was telling bestie two years ago about how great Crested Geckos (Correlophus ciliatus) are for vegans when she said she wanted a pet gecko some day. But we put a pin that discussion when she said she wanted to buy a house for a large display enclosure first.
One of the problem with Crested Geckos for beginners is they drop their tail randomly for any reason, then novice keepers get upset that it's their fault. And the tail doesn't grow back. Then sometimes people don't like the appearance of the frog butt. So, the fact Gargoyle Geckos can regrow their tail almost entirely will make me shift my recommendations.

This is my jungle Carpet Python, Dolores. I adopted her from a friend 9 years ago. She is a very vocal snake (aka she makes a lot of noise because she's fussy and doesn't like to be handled all that much). Snakes don't have vocal chords, but they can make a lot of hissing, bubbling, sighing, huffing noises. (She has a messed up jaw birth deformity so sometimes she can't keep spit in her mouth 🤷♀️)
So basically she inspired how my Ghouls verbally emote in my work.

She has a much bigger enclosure now but this is the prettiest photo of her from 2018.

1 week update for Echidna:
She's settling into her quarantine enclosure nicely. She's had her first meal already and I'm giving it 1 more week before I begin the process of working with her.
