Heavy Hearts Ch 12

Past Casey Novak x reader warnings: language, alcohol consumption, mentions of drugs, smoking, Brock, usual manipulation games.
Casey had never been happier that she’d decided to get some work experience in over the first couple months of summer. Originally it had been to help pass the time faster while she waited for you to return from DC. Now it was the easiest way to distract herself from the constant swirling thoughts of self doubt in her brain, the feeling of never being good enough that constantly plagued her. She spent her days working, learning as much as she could to make sure that whatever career she had waiting for her post graduation would be a substantial one. She took every handout she could, making every single connection possible around New York.
She did whatever she could to keep her mind off you and whatever you were doing over in DC.
**
Over in DC things were going about as well as anyone could expect them to be. You were still trying to cope with everything that had happened in the first week, as much as you’d wanted to try and contact Casey you wanted to respect her wishes of not bothering her. Besides, she’d blocked your number, the only way to try to talk to her would be to call her parent’s home phone and you figured that wouldn’t go over well. You’d just have to wait until the fall semester started and pray you ran into each other and she was willing to hear you out.
In the meantime you were honestly surprised with how nice Brock was being, you had figured he would’ve been the complete asshole you’d known him to be your entire life or forcing himself into your life constantly. You’d get a message once in a while, usually the afternoon of an event he knew both of your families would be at that evening, double checking that you were coming. He’d present himself like some sort of gentleman, even showing up with small gifts for you, a pair of earrings one night, a bracelet the next, always offering to pick up your tab at the bar, drive you home at the end of the night. Flowers started to show up at your house, much to your parents excitement and you couldn’t help but roll your eyes. They were the ones who were putting on the pressure, telling you that you needed to make sure Brock was on your arm for every upcoming event over the next couple of months. You simply let out a sigh and nodded, saying it was fine. You were exhausted, and as you got ready one night you thought about it for a while, that maybe, just maybe if your heartbreak for Casey wasn’t consuming you right now, maybe you’d be okay with the whole thing. That a life in DC wasn’t actually all that bad. It was almost like the ritz and the glamour was sucking you back in, reminding you that you could be attending garden parties in fancy dresses with expensive champagne every weekend, even if that did mean you had to be with someone you didn’t care about.
You looked at yourself in the mirror that night as you clipped a necklace on to complete your look and to be completely honest, you weren’t even sure you recognized yourself anymore, whoever you were now certainly wasn’t the same girl who was at Harvard a month ago. You’d almost been reverting back to the person you were six years ago before ever leaving Washington in the first place and you had yet to even realize it.
*
You were back at the country club tonight, a mixture of friends from over a couple of years of school, some your age and some Ethan’s, a reunion of sorts with the excitement of a wedding on the horizon. Brock had gravitated toward you the moment you arrived, arm wrapping around your waist and you avoided the kiss he always attempted before you let him lead you up to the bar. You weren’t quite sure how or why, but after spending so much time together you felt like maybe the two of you were actually becoming friends, or, at least from your perspective, you didn’t hate him as much as you had earlier, though he was still a sleaze. You were able to put up with him when he was sober, or only a couple of drinks in, it was only once he was drunk or high that you wanted absolutely nothing to do with him, he got too handsy, too out of control, both things you didn’t need in your life.
His hand wrapped around your waist from behind, his lips hitting your shoulder before moving up to your neck and you smacked his arm, stepping away from him.
“Stop it!” You shot him a glare.
“What?” He laughed.
“I’m not your girlfriend.” You grumbled, scooping up the glass of wine from the bar top.
“Oh c’mon sweetheart.” He grinned, his hand coming to rest on your hip, “you’ve been with me at every one of these parties.”
“Yeah I know.” You huffed, taking a heavy sip, “I guess I don’t really have a lot of friends left here and somehow you happen to be the person willing to put up with me.”
“I am willing to do far more than just put up with you.” He chuckled, stepping toward you once again, “you get those flowers?
“I did.” You let out a soft sigh, picking up your wine glass again “and they were gorgeous, thank you, but you really didn’t need to.”
“Hey…” he pinched at your elbow to gain your attention and when you glanced up at him you could’ve sworn there was genuine emotion behind his eyes, “I like you. I always have, you know that. I just never thought I’d actually get the chance, you were always off being such a bad ass, I didn’t think I’d ever see you again. Now this summer’s brought us back together in some weird way, you can at least give it a chance, right?” He peered down at you with a soft smile on his cheeks and you let out a huff.
“Brock, honestly, you see timing that’s right, and I get that but I’m still so hung up on Casey, on everything that happened, I mean it hasn’t even been that long…”
“Take your time.” His hand cupped your cheek, “I’m willing to wait. You’re worth it.”
“I can’t decide if the bullshit coming from your mouth makes me want to vomit or tell you you’re nice, you know that?” You rolled your eyes, swigging back a large mouthful of your wine as he laughed.
“I mean it. I know things haven’t exactly progressed conventionally, but at least give me a chance? Let me be your summer fling? I mean, we’ve already done the worst of it.” The smarmy grin was back on his cheeks and you rolled your eyes again, attempting to step away from him as you took another large sip of your drink.
“You’re insufferable, you know that?”
“Okay, let me ask you one thing then?”
“What?”
“Can I kiss you?” He smiled softly and your brow furrowed as you surveyed him for a moment. Honestly, there was no harm, you were walking out of here alone, you knew that. With an exasperated sigh, you nodded and he smiled. His hand moved from your cheek to the back of your neck, gently pulling you toward him and your hands landed on his waist as his lips met yours. You didn’t want to like it, you knew you didn’t, it was something you were doing for someone else, but the feeling of a body against yours again made you so relaxed it felt wrong. It was only when his tongue ran across the seam of your lips, begging for entrance that you stepped back, patting him on the chest.
“You got what you wanted, don’t expect that to happen again.” You muttered, picking up your wine glass to drain the drink.
“You know, you keep saying that.” He chuckled, before turning to the bartender “can we get the lady another drink?”
“Y/N!” A voice called out and you were ever thankful to have an excuse to turn away from Brock, finding Sarah on your other side, wrapping you in a tight hug, “I’m so happy you’re still here. Ethan said you were gonna try and escape early this summer.”
“Yeah well, that dream kinda died a couple of weeks ago.” You sighed softly.
“Well I’m kinda glad, that means you can come to the bachelorette!” She smiled brightly, “and we’re having a pretty big party here next week at the pool. Girls and boys, so” she glanced behind you, “you can bring someone.”
“I’ll be there.” You squeezed at her arm, “but I can’t make any promises otherwise.”
“Ah! You’re amazing. I’m so excited to have a sister.” She squealed, kissing your cheek before disappearing off into the crowd and with a small sigh you turned back to Brock.
“A pool party?” He raised a brow, “now I like the sound of that.”
“Oh you so aren’t invited.”
“She just told you you could bring someone.” He chuckled and you moved to pick up your fresh glass of wine. It was in the same moment the bartender was doing his best to clean the bar top, his hand hitting the base of your glass, knocking the entire thing over. “Oh come on!” Brock nearly shouted, “I just paid for that!”
“I’m sorry Mr. Lexington.” He muttered, ducking his gaze while cleaning up the spilt drink and you punched Brock’s chest.
“C’mon, don’t be an ass!”
“Whatever.” He finally stepped away from you, “I’m going for a smoke.”
You rolled your eyes, watching him leave out the patio door before you turned back to the bartender, thanking him as he replaced the split glass of wine.
“I’m so sorry about him, he’s a dick. I hope he isn’t always rude like that. It’s Steven, right?”
“It’s alright, and yes it is. I just don’t know what you see in him Miss Vanderbilt.”
“I don’t.” You scoffed, taking another sip of wine.
“Well, may I be a little bold?” Steven asked and you nodded, “don’t accept drinks from him if you haven’t seen them made. And never turn your back on them when he’s around.”
You took a moment to process what he was saying, glancing between your glass of wine and where the last one had been spilt, “wait… are you saying he just tried to drug me? Why would do that?”
“Well..” Steven’s voice quieted, “to get you to do whatever he wants. Plenty of workers here say they’ve seen him slip girls things to get them out of here. He’s manipulative. Just… be careful. He did just put something in your drink and he stole your phone the night of Ethan’s engagement party, waited, watched until he saw you put in the passcode then swiped it off the bar once your back was turned.”
“I… what?” You glanced down to your phone, remembering it being on the bar top that night, but now that you were thinking about it, you’d never put it back into your bag, “okay, hold on.” You reached out to Steven, “if you’re drugged…. It completely blacks out your memory, right?”
“From what I’ve head, yes. Most people say they usually remember bits and pieces on a normal night, but with the date rape drug, it’s just all gone.”
Realization began to wash over you and you couldn’t help the tears threatening to build in your eyes, “Oh my god..”
“Hey, you know, if you want me to have the valet call your car service, I can get you out of here, tell him you weren’t feeling well when he comes back.”
“Uh, yeah.” You nodded, sliding the glass of wine away from you, “that’d be great. And thank you.”
*
Outside, Brock had managed to connect with his brother, lighting up a smoke beside him before he spoke quietly.
“Hey, you happen to have any more of that stuff?”
“What?” Archer laughed, “you out already?”
“Bartender just knocked over a glass with the last of it.” Brock grumbled, taking another puff of the cigarette.
“Damn. You get any luck at the other party?”
“Like you wouldn’t believe.” He laughed, “she was so far gone she couldn’t even say no. Didn’t even put up a fight.”
“Keep doing it.” Archer replied, sliding a small bag over to him, “she’ll eventually think she’s into it and as long as you’re spoiling he when she’s sober, she’s bound to fall for you. But don’t waste time, you need to get a ring on it before the news gets out.”
“I know.” Brock scoffed, “I’m doing the best I can, you don’t need to hound me like dad does.”
**
The pool was decked out with decorations, tables of appetizers and finger foods spread throughout the place, the grill up and running, cocktail waiters with a signature drink as well as an open bar. The sun was high in the sky as people soaked it all in, some splashing in the pool, a couple games of chicken, a corner reserved off for volleyball and a few people in the hot tubs.
You’d arrived with Brock, happy when he’d quickly made his way off to the bar and stayed over with the boys, finally giving you some peace and quiet. You choice to relax poolside on one of the loungers in your bikini, a wrap around your waist while you got some sun and started on a new book. You chatted with a few people here and there, made pleasantries but mainly just stuck to yourself, your energy was lower than normal this week, you were still having trouble sleeping constantly caught up in your thoughts about Casey whenever you closed your eyes.
“Hey, snagged you some of those sliders you like so much.” Ethan popped up onto the lounger beside you, putting the plate of food down on the table, “and they’ve got watermelon mojitos!”
“Okay, amazing.” You dropped your book down beside you, sitting up as you tucked your legs under you to face Ethan and the table, “thank you.”
“Noticed you hadn’t eaten anything yet.” He replied and you huffed.
“Not your job to take care of me. Besides, Larissa had a huge brunch spread set out as usual.” You took a sip of the mojito, “oh god, this is good.”
“To be completely honest I’m even surprised you’re here.”
“Sarah invited me,” you shrugged, “and as long as it gets me out of the house and away from mom and dad I don’t really care what it is.”
“I know you hate coming home, so it really does mean a lot that you’re here this summer. Sarah’s been really excited to get to know you better.”
“She’s a really nice girl.” You smirked over the rim of your glass, “I’ll never know how you snagged her.”
“Oh it’s my boyish charm, I’m sure.” He teased back and you practically snorted. “How is it at the house?”
“The usual, but with a lot more wedding shit going on, you know.” You let out a little sigh, “mom’s obsessed. She’s got TLC on constantly trying to pick up ideas from reality tv.”
“Yeah she’s going a little overboard I won’t lie. We haven’t even set a date, hell we haven’t even publicly announced the engagement.”
“Well you know dad’s gonna be all over that making sure it’s ‘politically correct’ and ‘appropriate’ and ‘upholding the family name’. And that it’s gonna be in the papers all across the country.”
“God.” Ethan rolled his eyes, “I really didn’t think they’d be so involved with all of this.”
“Mom needs something to do.” You muttered, sighing softly before you took another sip of your drink.
“What’d you mean?” He looked across at you, his brow scrunched as he bit into one of the sliders.
“She’s holed up in that house all day by herself, we have housekeepers for everything, she doesn’t even have chores to worry about. She’s read every book in the library, probably twice, I mean, the woman left a high level journalism job just to be a trophy wife, can you blame her for being bored? I just don’t understand women who do that, unless you hate your job or your goal was to be a stay at home wife, but like, she coulda been something big.”
“Half the women in this city could’ve been something.” Ethan pointed out, “but are completely happy just being arm candy.”
“I don’t get it.” You shook your head, then suddenly glanced up, “oh god, sorry if that’s what Sarah’s doing.”
“No.” He laughed, “she’s in interior design. So she can work from home most days if she wants but she likes but she still stays busy. God you should see the way her and her mom keep butting heads over decorations and colours, it’s honestly kind of entertaining.”
“Yeah well, you’ve always been easily entertained.” You grinned before polishing off the mojito, “good thing you’ve got your trust fund, Sarah’s gonna be the real breadwinner in your house.”
“Oh fuck off.” He laughed.
You heard a sound behind you and the next thing you knew Brock was sliding onto the lounger beside you, an arm easily wrapping around your waist, “there’s my gorgeous girl.”
“Not your girlfriend.” You muttered, glancing up at Ethan who was looking between the two of you. Brock’s free hand reached behind him, pulling up a cocktail to place on the table in front of you before grabbing his own beer.
“Looked a little thirsty, brought you a sangria, the girls are fawning over them, thought you’d like it.”
“Oh…uh..” you paused, your eyes lingering on the drink before you swapped gears, your hand coming to rest on his chest, “you know, I think the sun’s getting to me a bit, can you grab me a bottle of water?”
“Yeah, course darlin’.”
“Thanks babe.” Smiling you quickly pecked him on the cheek and he disappeared toward the bar.
“What the fuck was that?” Ethan hissed, “you did not just ‘babe’ Brock fucking Lexington.”
“It got him out of here, didn’t it?”
“Guy’s a sleaze.”
“Don’t you think I know that?”
“Drink looks bomb though.” Ethan picked it up and you nearly slapped it out of his hand.
“Do not drink that!”
He glanced between it, you and Brock off in the distance before he put it together, glancing around before dumping it out into a nearby plant.
“Okay so why the fuck are you spending time with him then?”
“Convenience?” You shrugged, “it gets mom off my back. And honestly, Brock too. If I let him pick me up, show up on his arm and drive me home it’s the appearance, that’s all he cares about. He usually disappears for most of the event anyways, and he keeps buying me shit. So I’ll let it slide, get what I can before I can get out of here.”
“So you are still planning on running off to the Hampton’s before summer’s over?”
“Not exactly.” You sighed, ducking your gaze as you started to pick at one of the sliders, “I can’t go to the Hampton’s or New York, I don’t have a place to stay so I’m unfortunately stuck here until next semester. Just fucking trapped in a totally different life.”
“What happened to Casey?” Ethan asked, a brow raised in your direction and you glanced up before looking down at the slider again, tearing the bun up bit by bit.
“She broke up with me a few weeks ago.”
“Why?”
You let out a low breath, finally returning the slider to the table before looking up at him, trying to ignore the misting of tears in your eyes, “I cheated on her...”
Ethan’s brow furrowed as he studied you for a minute, then glanced up across the pool yard to Brock again before looking back at you and his eyes widened.
“Are you serious? With him?! I thought you were obsessed with Casey?”
“I was. I am.” You huffed.
“Didn’t you buy her a ring?!”
“Yeah.” You groaned, “with everything that was left in my personal savings from working through college. So now I’m back stuck on the bank of mom and dad, thanks for the reminder.”
“So you’re actually with Brock now?”
“No! Kind of?” You huffed again, “I don’t know. He thinks it’s a summer fling and I’m letting him believe whatever he wants until I can leave and never see him again.”
“I can’t believe you’re sleeping with him.” Ethan shook his head, taking a large gulp of his drink.
“Oh I never said that!”
“Well how else do you constitute cheating then? I’m sure Casey will understand you playing along to keep him off your back.”
“Okay when I say I’m not sleeping with him I mean I’m not actively sleeping with him. It happened once.” You grimaced, “technically twice but honestly it counts as once.”
“Gross. Was it absolutely terrible?”
Before you could even process how to answer that Sarah popped up on Ethan’s side, quickly pecking his cheek before turning her attention to you.
“Sorry to interrupt. Y/n, please tell me you have a tampon I can borrow?”
“Oh yeah.” You shifted to grab your bag, digging through it until you found a couple and handed them off to her.
“You’re a life saver! Thank you!”
“Course. No problem.” You shot her a smile; she kissed Ethan quickly and then darted off inside. Ethan looked up at you, watching her disappear as your brow slowly furrowed, you glanced down into your bag and the colour started draining from your face.
“What?” He asked and you gulped.
“I…uh… I haven’t needed a tampon since leaving Harvard…”
“Oh.” His eyes widened before he laughed, “ohoho…. You are in shiiiit.”
“Shut up!” You glared at him, slapping his knee, “it’s probably just all the stress.”
Ethan was interrupted by Brock returning, handing you the requested water that you made sure was sealed properly before you opened it to take a sip. His hand lingered on the back of your neck,
“Everything okay?”
“You know, I think I’ve been out in the heat too long, I’m really not feeling great. Can you take me home?” You asked, standing from the lounger as you tugged a shirt on over your bikini top, picking up your purse, “no, wait, that’s dumb. You stay and enjoy the party I’ll call a car.”
“No, no.” Brock’s hand cupped you cheek, “if my girl’s sick I wanna make sure she gets home in one piece. There’s a CVS on the way, I can run in and grab whatever you need.”
“Uh.. yeah, but I can grab it. I need a couple of things actually.”
“So?” He shrugged.
“Girly… things…” You implied and he chuckled, raising his hands in defeat.
“Okay, well that is all up to you sweetheart.” He leant in and Ethan watched confused as ever as you basically slipped into a completely different façade, submitting to Brock as you let him kiss you, “c’mon. Let’s get you home.” His arm wrapped around your waist he began to lead you away from the cluster of chairs.
“Hey!” Ethan called out and the two of you turned back to him, “call me.”
“Yeah. I will.” You shot him a tight smile but he could see the scared look in your eyes.
As much as you wanted to pass this off as stress, change of environment, the breakup, you both knew what this really had to be. And you both knew exactly what that meant for your future it if the news got out.

Feral ADA’s vs SVU Detectives
[Round 3]
Alex: “I don’t work for you, you work for me at my discretion!”
Casey: “And this is my case, and I don’t answer to you.”
Their Legacy ⬇️
Atlas Cabot-Novak: “Don’t talk to me like I don’t care, about the victims I do! I have given my life to helping people. My mother was shot doing her job, she spent three year in Witness Protection and my other mom was attacked in her office and censured, I apologise I’m not willing to stick my neck on the chopping block because you can’t get me the evidence that I need. You want me to do my fucking job?! Do yours!”

*not my gif*
Alexandra Cabot was top of her class. Many selfish and jealous people thought that she was the best just because she was a known person because of her last name. But the truth was that Alex was dedicated to school, she had always been, since she can remember; she spent her free days with books, she loved them. It wasn’t entirely a lie that her family had influenced her in getting into law school, but she was happy with her decision, and she was going to do anything to get to her goals, meaning, she wouldn’t let anything distract her from getting what she wanted. She was probably the only person in her class that didn’t go to parties or gatherings with her classmates, she didn’t go to the games the school held, she just focused on her studies. Did she regret it? Maybe. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to have a social life, she had her friend, but she knew that university was not about parties.
For two whole years it stayed that way, nothing had changed her mind, and she was still very much focused on her studies; that was until her eyes landed on a redhead. One of her classes had gotten canceled, meaning she had 2 hrs free to do whatever she wanted; so she decided to finish homework she had. She had thought about going to the library, but she decided she’d go for a coffee near her building, and she’d spend the two hours there. This was a coffee shop that she normally visited every now and then when she wanted to be at the library, the coffee, and the food in there was really good, and the environment was actually calm, and it helped her concentrate on the things she had to do. But as she sat down in her usual spot and looked around, she noticed a redhead taking an order. She had never seen her here, clearly, because she’d remember that beautiful smile. For a moment she was too stunned by how beautiful she was, she had stared way too longer that she didn’t notice her friend sitting right in front of her.
“Alex?”
Alex snapped out of her thoughts and stared at her friend. “H-Hi! Sorry. I uh…when did you get here?”
Erin chuckled. “I’ve been here for like 3 minutes. How long have you been staring at the redhead?” She grinned as she got her notebook and book out of her bag.
“I- what do you mean?” Alex chuckled nervously. “I was not staring at anyone, just…a bit lost. Thinking what I’m ordering.”
“Uhuh…as if you never order the same, Cabot.” Erin chuckled. “But okay, I’ll believe you. What are you ordering?” She raised her brow.
Alex sighed as she grinned. “Black coffee and a chocolate croissant.”
Erin laughed. “See? Why is it wrong that I caught you staring at the redhead? She’s really pretty.”
Alex shrugged. “I have never seen her here before.”
“She hasn’t been here for long. I saw her the day I came to buy us coffee. I think I heard she’s a law student too.”
Alex raised her brow. “Law student?” She nodded. “I can actually see that.” She said almost in a whisper as she got her things out.
“Alexandra Cabot is getting interested in someone after two years.” Erin smirked.
Alex looked up and shook her head rapidly. “I- Erin no! I just- I was-“
“Hi ladies! My name is Casey, can I offer you anything to drink or eat?” Casey smiled at both of them and then her eyes landed on Alex’s.
Alex cleared her throat as she looked up at Casey, trying to talk but all of a sudden, she forgot how to do that. Erin wanted to laugh but cleared her throat too, getting Casey’s attention. “I’ll get an iced latte with sugar please. And to eat, I’ll just get a muffin.” She then looked at Alex. “Alex? What are you ordering?”
“I- uh…black coffee and a croissant, please.” Alex offered a shy smile.
Casey grinned as she nodded. “Comin’ right up.” She then walked away, but not before she turned to look at Alex again, offering a smile.
Erin laughed and threw her head back. “Oh my, I never thought I’d live to see the day of seeing Alexandra Cabot getting nervous for someone! So.” She looked back at Alex. “Is your type redheads?”
“Jesus, Erin, drop it.” Alex sighed as she covered her face, blushing. “Let’s just-“ she sighed as she looked back at Erin. “Let’s get this done, we have class, and we need to hurry.”
“Avoiding. It is true that you always learn something new from people.” Erin chuckled teasingly as she opened her book.
Alex bit her lip as she looked at Erin for a moment, and then she turned her head to look at Casey. She had come out to Erin just a year ago, admitting that she had always been attracted to girls, but she never said a thing because she didn’t think it was relevant, but when Erin asked if she wanted to go on a double date with some guys, Alex thought it would be good to let Erin know that she was not into guys. She was relieved when Erin accepted her and never judged her, it was the other way around, actually, she was pretty much trying to get a date for Alex in every possible chance, but Alex refused reminding her that she only cared about school and not some dumb romance in university. But now…she had to admit that maybe a little crush on someone wouldn’t hurt. She didn’t actually have a type, she didn’t know if she did. But until now, all she knew, is that Casey could be her type.
********************
Alex sighed as she tried to keep her mind concentrated in the book she had in front of her, she was studying for finals and Erin was supposed to meet her at the coffee shop so they could study together, but at the end plans had changed and now Alex sat at her same spot, trying to focus on her book and hoping to not get distracted with the redhead. She didn’t even know if she worked that day, but the last time she had been going to the coffee shop, Casey was right there, and even if there was someone else taking orders, Casey was always the one that took their order. What Alex had been trying to avoid had happened; she had accepted to herself that she had a crush on Casey. She had been trying to avoid it, she had been trying to not think about her, but it was impossible after learning that she was also a law student, she was in her first year, so it’s not like they’d ever have same classes, but she had caught her in the hallways every now and then.
How did she know about this? Because of course Erin was encouraging her crush. She teased her every possible chance she had. She had also found out that Casey was in the softball team of the university, and it honestly made sense with how beautiful her body was. Alex tried hard to not think about Casey and about the new information that Erin had provided her, but in the last 4 months, it was kind of impossible not to think about Casey. That smile, those eyes, that voice. Alex was now lost, and she knew it. There was no turning back from this, unless of course, she tried to get over it or she found out that Casey had a boyfriend or something, which could break her heart…break her heart was probably too much. But she would feel sad? She was confused to say the least. It was just a stupid crush. That was it. A crush.
“Alex!”
Alex looked up from her book and her heart stopped for a moment as she stared at Casey, who was smiling at her. “Casey…hi.”
“You remember my name!” Casey chuckled softly.
How could I not remember it? “Yes, I do.” Alex chuckled. “You’re not working today?”
“Oh, I worked earlier. But I have finals, so they let me leave early. I actually just finished my shift and was going to stay around to study.” Casey smiled as she looked at Alex’s book. “I take it that you’re also studying.”
Alex looked down at her book and smiled. “Yes…I uh…I am.” She looked back at Casey. “I’m just reading again, I already studied.” She chuckled nervously.
“Well, I’ve heard that you’re top of your class, so I believe you’re more than ready for any exam.” Casey grinned.
“You’ve…heard about me.” Alex frowned as she smiled.
“A little, yes.” Casey smiled. “I’m sorry I don’t wanna take your time. I- oh! I brought you this.” Casey placed a coffee and a small bag beside it. “Some encouragement to study.” She grinned.
Alex looked at the coffee and the small bag and smiled. “Is that…”
“Black coffee and a chocolate croissant. You always order the same.” Casey smiled. “I’ll see you around?”
Alex nodded. “Hey…do you…maybe want some help with studying? You can sit with me if you want to.”
Casey smiled. “Really?”
Alex nodded again. “Sure.”
“I’d actually appreciate that.” Casey smiled as she placed her backpack on the floor and sat down in front of Alex.
Alex knew that this wouldn’t really help her crush, but at this point, who really cared about it? She was going down, bad, and she knew it. Casey had heard about her, she knew her name, she had even learned her order. And the funny thing was that the very first time she met Casey, she had brought her a plain croissant because Alex had not mentioned she wanted a chocolate one, but suddenly Casey started bringing her the right order, and now she learned it, and even if it seemed nothing, it was everything to Alex. But then her mind started playing tricks on her. Why would someone like Casey want to be with Alex? Even hang out with her? It was surprising enough that Erin was her friend, they were totally different but similar at the same time, but they were able to build a close friendship. But Casey, she was younger by two years, but why would she find any interest in Alex? She was probably just being friendly, maybe she just wanted to know people who were older to have some sort of help in school, but the reality was that Alex didn’t care. The thought of helping Casey and being able to spend time with her made her feel good. This was so wrong, but she didn’t care.
********************
“Where are we going?” Alex asked as she sighed, crossing her arms as she waited for Erin.
Erin smiled as she walked to Alex, closing her closet. “We’re going to a softball game.”
Alex frowned. “We never go to those, Erin.”
“Now we are.” Erin grinned as she handed Alex a shirt with the softball team logo.
Alex stared at it and then realized what Erin was doing. “Erin.” She looked up at her. “No.
“Alex. Yes.” Erin smirked as she threw Alex the shirt. “C’mon, we’re gonna be late.”
“You made me come all the way here so you can embarrass me and take me to a game. Casey’s game.” Alex grabbed the shirt from her shoulder, looking down at it.
“It’s just a game! You get to see Casey play. You’re gonna tell me you don’t wanna see her.” Erin smirked as she turned to grab the rest of her stuff.
Alex sighed as she took off her hoodie and put the shirt on. “You’re gonna pay for this.”
Erin laughed. “You’re gonna tell me you haven’t been spending more time at the coffee shop.” She turned to look at Alex. “Oh, wait. With Casey, actually.”
Alex frowned. “I…haven’t.”
“Oh, yes you have. I saw you two days in a row, sitting with her.”
“I was helping her study!”
“So you introduced yourself?” Erin raised her brows.
Alex cleared her throat as she looked down at her hoodie. “She heard about me and knew my name…” she whispered softly as she looked up at Erin.
Erin smirked. “Oh, someone’s got a crush on you.”
Alex rolled her eyes. “Can’t we just go? Please.”
Erin chuckled. “Fine, let’s go.”
As they got to the field, Erin tried to get them to good stands so they could get a perfect look of the game. Erin went crazy buying food and snacks, but Alex was truly nervous that she’d be seeing Casey playing. In one of their meetings, Casey had talked about her playing softball and the training she had, which meant that she barely had any time to do anything at all, between school, work and practice, her days were pretty busy. So the fact that she had stayed hours with Alex meant everything to her, even if they had been mostly studying the whole time. Alex looked around as she sat down, her eyes suddenly landing on the redhead who was stretching. Her breath hitched as she noticed the tight uniform and how it hugged her body perfectly; she wanted to give herself a slap as she was focusing on her body, which was definitely not right. Her eyes went back to Casey’s face, and to her luck, Casey was already staring at her, a smile on her face as she waved. Alex blushed slightly as she waved back, smiling back at her.
Eventually, the game finally started, everyone around them screaming and clapping for the team. She didn’t even know what was supposed to happen in the game, but she was willing to stay focused for Casey. Erin tried to instruct her what was happening, but even if she tried to listen to Erin, she really didn’t understand a thing. Finally, Casey put on her helmet and grabbed her bat, earning loud screams as she walked to her base. Alex’s eyes lit up as she looked at Casey, smiling as she positioned herself; she had seen some baseball games with her father before, and so far, she knew that Casey’s team was winning, and if she hit a…homerun? Something. They’d win the whole game. Or that’s what her mind made up. She couldn’t help but scream and stand up when Casey started running fast around all the bases, the whole crowd going insane screaming Casey’s name. Erin and Alex jumped and screamed together as Casey’s team surrounded to celebrate the win, everyone cheering for them and throwing food and water. Alex’s eyes focused on Casey for a moment, and her smile slowly faded as she noticed a girl hugging Casey and placing her hand on Casey’s cheek, leaning in to kiss her cheek. Alex cleared her throat and looked at Erin, offering a small smile as her heart sank.
Alex had asked Erin if they could already leave, not wanting to stay there anymore, even if it meant that they’d lose the celebration and the team. Erin had drunk a lot of soda and water, so Alex was waiting for her outside the restrooms, wrapping her hoodie around her waist and crossing her arms as she looked around. A bunch of people kept celebrating and screaming, running around, and jumping. Alex never understood sports, and she couldn’t believe that Erin had convinced her to come just to have her heart hurt at the sight of another girl kissing Casey. She sighed softly, rubbing her face, and groaning softly.
“Alex!”
Alex uncovered her face and her heart stopped for a second as she saw Casey running to her. “Hey.”
Casey smiled widely as she stood in front of Alex. “Hi. I’m so glad I caught you. I wanted to say hi since I saw you at the start of the game.”
Alex cleared her throat. “Oh. Uh. Well hi.” She smiled. “Congratulations, by the way. Good game.”
Casey chuckled as she looked at the ground for a moment. “Thanks.” She looked back at Alex. “I didn’t think Alex Cabot was a sports girl.”
Alex huffed a laugh. “I am not.” She shook her head. “But uh, my friend Erin, she dragged me here. I’m waiting for her so we can go.”
Casey nodded. “Oh, got it.” She smiled. “Hey, uh. So…later we’re throwing a small celebration party, since this was the last game of the season. I was wondering…if you wanted to come.”
Alex stared at Casey for a moment, thinking that maybe she had heard wrong. “Uh…a party?”
“Yes.” Casey smiled. “I mean I don’t normally go to these parties, but you know, we won, thought it could be fun for once. I don’t really have to work tomorrow so. And I was actually going to call you, you saved me a phone call.”
Alex smiled softly. “So…even if I didn’t come…you were going to invite me?”
Casey shrugged. “Why not?” She grinned.
Alex nodded. “I uh…well, I don’t normally go to any parties. I don’t…really get invited but uh-“
“We’re definitely going!” Erin said as she walked out of the restrooms, smiling at Alex and then at Casey. “That’s if I’m invited too? If not, I’ll drop of Alex.” She grinned.
“Of course! I mean, the team is inviting a lot of people so.” Casey chuckled. “So, yes?”
Alex looked back at Erin and then at Casey, smiling as she nodded. “Sure. Where?”
Casey’s smile widened. “Uh…Tina’s house. Back Bay area, there’s going to be a big sign outside the building, so you won’t miss it. I can call you later and tell you the right address.”
“Sounds good.” Alex smiled.
Casey nodded. “Alright, I’ll see you then. Bye Erin.” She smiled before she walked away.
Erin’s mouth opened in surprise as she turned to look at Alex. “Alexandra Cabot going to her very first university party! Oh my! We gotta find you a perfect dress!”
Alex rolled her eyes as she sighed, turning to look at Erin. “Don’t get too excited, Er. I think I saw a girl kissing Casey’s cheek.” She started to walk, trying to hide the excitement she felt.
Erin frowned. “Oh, c’mon, Alex.” She followed her. “That doesn’t mean anything! I kiss you on the cheek too, doesn’t mean we’re dating.”
“I know but…” Alex scoffed. “Why would Casey Novak be interested in someone like me? Like seriously. I’m older than her, I’m…literally a nerd.”
Erin raised her brow. “You do realize that it’s obvious that younger people are fascinated by people of our ages. Plus, it’s two years. And!” She jumped in front of Alex to stop her. “You’re not the only nerd. Casey is top of her class.” She grinned.
Alex frowned. “What?”
“Uhuh. Laura was telling me the other day. We go to the same hair salon, and she was talking about how Casey was the smartass in their class. So her asking you to help her study? Yeah, that was definitely just to spend time with you, Cabot.” Erin smirked.
Alex shook her head as she tried to hide her smile. “Okay…even if she wanted that. I still don’t think she’d be interested in me.” She shrugged. “So…this. The party? It’s just a party and that’s it.”
Erin rolled her eyes. “If you say so. But. We’re still gonna dress you nicely. Comfortable. But nicely. If Novak doesn’t lay eyes on you tonight, we’re getting you someone else. Maybe we can get another redhead.” She smirked.
“Fine.” Alex grinned as she rolled her eyes.
********************
“You’re not gonna leave me alone, are you?” Alex asked as they walked to the house, looking at Erin.
Erin looked back at Alex and smiled. “I believe you’ll leave me at some point. But no, and if you want to go, we can go. Promise I won’t drink much.” She chuckled.
Alex sighed as she nodded. They walked inside the house and Alex was pretty surprised to find a big crowd, the music was a bit loud and there was barely any lights. Erin took her hand so they wouldn’t get lost in the crowd, trying to get to the middle of the house or somewhere where they could actually move and hear each other. They finally got to what seemed to be the living room, people were dancing and drinking, some were playing with the cups, some were making out. So this is what a university party was like, Alex was really not missing anything, this was just a mess and they seemed horny teenagers. In every single part, there were about 2 or 3 couples just making out. She thought that she only saw this in movies but no, it was pretty much real, and she was sure more people were upstairs, and she did not want to figure out what they were doing up there.
As she looked around the room, she saw Casey’s team gathered around in a corner, laughing and with drinks in their hands, and then there was Casey right in the middle. She smiled softly but then her smile fainted again as she saw the girl from earlier right beside Casey, her arm wrapped around her shoulder. Alex knew she had no point in getting jealous, but she was. But then Casey’s eyes landed on her, and Alex swore her smile widened as she saw Alex; she didn’t know if she had imagined it or not, but Casey’s eyes traveled down her body, and she nibbled on her lip as she started walking to Alex; she was thankful that she had let Erin dress her, Alex normally liked wearing nice clothes, but the skirt and the blouse along with the long boots that Erin had picked for her, were showing a little too much, but if that was getting Casey’s attention, then she didn’t mind one bit.
Her breath hitched as Casey got closer to her, her eyes also traveling down Casey’s body; Erin had joked before about Alex being into girls that didn’t exactly dressed girly, she had now seen Casey wearing her softball uniform, she had seen her wearing a skirt with a blazer for a presentation, her work uniform, and casual Casey. Party Casey looked like those girls from movies who were the ones that ruled over people, with a leather jacket, jeans and boots, and Alex couldn’t skip the shirt she was wearing, that showed Casey’s cleavage.
“I thought I’d have to call you to make sure you were coming.” Casey grinned as she stood in front of Alex. “You look nice.” She whispered softly but enough for Alex to hear her.
Alex chuckled nervously as she blushed. “You look nice too.”
Erin cleared her throat as she smiled at both women. “I’ll see myself out for a bit.” She grinned as she walked away, going to Casey’s friends.
Casey chuckled. “Can I offer you a drink?”
“I uh…I actually don’t drink that much.” Alex bit her lip as she looked at Casey.
“Oh, such a good girl, Cabot.” She grinned. “They have nonalcoholic drinks too. We can go to the kitchen to check.” Before Alex could answer, she grabbed her hand and pulled her to the kitchen, walking through the crowd.
Alex tried to stay as calm as possible, and then thought that a drink wouldn’t hurt, it could actually help her calm her nerves. Once they got to the kitchen, she stood close to Casey and smiled. “Actually, a drink wouldn’t hurt.”
Casey turned to look at Alex and smiled. “I can mix some vodka with soda or juice so it’s not too strong.”
“Whatever you drinking.” Alex grinned.
Casey couldn’t help but stare into her eyes, grinning softly. “You look beautiful with or without glasses, you know?”
Alex’s breath hitched again as she stared into green eyes. “Your eyes are beautiful.” She smiled.
Casey bit her lip as she smiled. “Thanks.” She then cleared her throat as she grabbed the drinks she was going to mix and two cups.
Alex looked around trying not to stare too much at Casey, and noticed Erin staring at her, a smirk on her face. She shook her head, a quiet laugh leaving her lips. She returned her stare to Casey once she saw her raising the cup and handing it to her. “Thank you.”
“Of course.” Casey smiled as she grabbed her own drink and took a sip of it. “So, is this really your first party?” She leaned over the counter.
“You said it, I’m a good girl.” Alex smirked as she huffed a chuckle. “I uh…I focus a lot on school. I rather keep myself busy with studying or with books.” She shrugged. “I don’t know…I was just never an extrovert.”
Casey nodded. “I get that. I mean…these parties can get pretty crazy.” She chuckled. “I normally don’t come to these, and if I do, I literally leave early.”
Alex tilted her head. “I thought you were one of those athletic girls that liked to party and be a heartbreaker.” She grinned. “But I heard you’re also sort of a nerd.”
Casey blushed slightly as she looked at Alex. “I uh…I mean…yes, I just.” She huffed a chuckle. “Who told you?”
“Oh, a little bird.” Alex smirked. “So, you asking me for help…?” She raised her brow.
Casey shrugged. “Maybe I just…wanted to have an excuse to talk to you.” She grinned as she tilted her head, green eyes never leaving blue ones.
Alex knew she was probably blushing, but she couldn’t look away from Casey, she could stare at her for as long as she possibly could. “Nice excuse.” She simply said.
They stayed in the kitchen for a little longer than they expected, finding that it was the most quiet place in the whole house, and they just wanted to talk. They were talking about everything but nothing specific at the same time, just making each other smile and laugh. Even if Alex hated the fact that there were a lot of people surrounding them, she loved that she was with Casey, and that she was actually willing to stay with her. But then there was a moment where they literally dragged Casey away from Alex, and Casey made sure to tell her that she’d be back with her as soon as possible. Alex just watched her being dragged away and back into the living room, leaving her a bit sad but also understood that this was a party for them after all. Her eyes finally landed on Erin who was already walking to her, a smirk plastered on her face.
“I see you’re having a good conversation with Novak. Guess we won’t have to find you anyone else.” Erin smirked.
Alex rolled her eyes playfully. “We’re just talking, Er. Nothing more.”
“You’re seriously still in denial that she’s interested in you.” Erin chuckled. “You’re literally perfect, Alex. You’re top of your class, you’re beautiful, you’re nice. Damn, you’re a good girl, anyone would want to have you.”
Alex chuckled as she took a sip of her drink, trying to hide her smile behind her cup. “She did mention that.”
Erin raised her brow. “That you’re a good girl?” Alex nodded. “She does not lose time.” She chuckled softly.
“Well, I think I lost her for tonight. So, whatever was happening between us, is over.”
“Don’t lose hope, Cabot. She could come back any time soon. They’re just doing the typical winning ritual.”
Alex frowned as she looked back at Erin. “Ritual?”
“They take shots, depending on the score they made.”
Alex raised her brows. “Is that even safe?”
Erin shrugged. “Not sure, but don’t be too surprised if your little redhead comes back all drunk.” She chuckled as she took a sip of her drink.
Alex sighed. “I guess.”
“Everybody!” Tina got up on the table in the living room, getting everyone’s attention as they turned the music down. “Those who want to play the bottle, gather around! We got drinks and dares!”
Erin turned to look at Alex. “Let’s go play.”
Alex frowned. “No way. I don’t want to have the bad luck of having to kiss some drunk person.”
“And what if that drunk person turns out to be Casey?” Erin smirked as she grabbed Alex’s hand and pulled her to the living room. “Count us in!”
Alex sat beside Erin and sighed as she looked at the people that gathered around. She was sure that these people were either the ones that were way too drunk, or were somewhere in the middle, and the rest just decided to ignore it or were too into their own things. Her eyes landed on Casey for a moment who was in front of her and laughing with Tina as the people started to play. The first few rounds were stupid things like ‘take off your shirt’ ‘drink two shots’ ‘kiss this person on the cheek’, making Alex realize that these people were a bunch of teenagers and couldn’t believe that most of them -if not all- were law students. She couldn’t help but laugh the moment the bottle landed in Erin, and it so happened that the other side landed on one of Casey’s friends, who dared her to go to a room with her. Alex’s eyes widened as Erin agreed, telling her that they had to loosen up, and then followed the girl. She was too distracted as she saw in surprised how they disappeared, but her attention was brough back when she heard yelling and clapping, her eyes landing in the bottle who was pointing at her, and the other end happened to be on Casey.
“Cabot and Novak!” Alex’s lips parted as she tried to say something, but right away Tina spoke up again. “Since Alex doesn’t know what to say, I dare you two to seven minutes in heaven!” Everyone started cheering on.
“What?” Alex simply said, her eyes landing on Casey who was already standing up, chuckling, and telling Tina something. She shook her head and walked to Alex, extending her hand to help her get up.
“C’mon.” Casey offered a sweet smile.
Alex gulped but grabbed Casey’s hand, standing up and following her upstairs. She could hear everyone yelling and clapping, some of them screaming both Alex and Casey’s names as they went up the stairs. Before she knew it, she was being pulled into a room, and as she looked around, she was sure that this was Tina’s room. She cleared her throat as she turned to look at Casey who was closing and locking the door, leaning her back on it as she looked at Alex, smiling softly.
“Casey…”
“We don’t have to do anything.” Casey smiled.
“Are you- seriously?”
Casey chuckled. “Seriously. I sat down there for Tina, it’s just a stupid game.” She shook her head. “And…I hate having to force people into doing something they don’t want to.”
Alex cleared her throat. “What can you get done in seven min, anyway?” She chuckled.
Casey shrugged as she laughed. “I’ve never been in this situation. But I do know you can do something. Make out maybe.”
Alex stared at her for a moment, biting her lip softly. “And would you?”
Casey frowned. “Would I what?”
“Want to make out with me.” Alex snapped.
Casey wetted her lips, her lip lingering between her teeth as she stared at Alex. “I might be a little drunk but…definitely.” She walked to Alex slowly, stopping just in front of her. “Would you?” She whispered softly.
Alex’s breath hitched as she stared up at Casey. She knew she was tall, and probably the boots that Casey was wearing made her a little taller, and she herself was tall, but she loved the fact that she had to look up at Casey. She bit her lip for a moment as she thought about her answer; she knew she had to think fast, the seven minutes could end any time soon. She nodded softly as grinned, and suddenly Casey’s hands were on her waist, and she leaned down to close the gap between them. Alex’s hand went to Casey’s neck to pull her impossibly closer to her, their lips moving against each other’s just perfectly.
Before her mind could register what was happening, Casey was pulling her to her and turned her around to press Alex against the door, Alex moaning against Casey’s mouth which gave Casey’s tongue access to dive in. Alex’s hand got lost in Casey’s short her, pulling her impossibly closer. Casey’s hands rubbed Alex’s sides, accidentally making Alex’s blouse rise up and she took the chance to make contact with Alex’s skin. They finally broke from the kiss, both panted heavily, but as Alex opened her eyes to look at Casey, Casey’s lips landed on her jawline, throwing her head back against the door as a quiet moan left her lips. Casey trailed kisses down Alex’s jawline to her neck, kissing and nibbling softly, she then looked up again to kiss Alex again, and just as her hand traveled down Alex’s hip, a loud knock on the door made them part away from each other.
“Seven minutes are over guys! Get your clothes on!”
Alex panted heavily as she looked at the door for a moment and then her eyes returned to Casey. She couldn’t help but chuckle at herself as she figured she was now part of those horny teenagers she was judging when she got to the party. Casey ran her hand through her hair as she grinned, looking down at the floor as she tried to hide the redness on her cheeks.
“We should uh-“ Alex cleared her throat as she fixed her blouse. “We should probably…”
Casey nodded. “Yes.” She chuckled as she looked up at Alex. “We should go back.”
Alex nodded, offering a shy smile. As she turned to open the door, she felt Casey’s hand on her wrist, bringing her attention back to Casey. Casey’s hand went to Alex’s neck and pulled her close to her, kissing her lips slowly and tenderly, as if they had all the time in the world. Their lips once again met in a perfect rhythm, making Alex’s stomach turn in a good way. Casey then smiled against her lips, pecking them once more before she pulled away.
“Now we can leave.” Casey grinned.
Alex nodded. “Sure.” She breathed out as she smiled, accepting Casey’s hand in hers.
Alex felt everyone’s eyes on her as they walked down the stairs, but her eyes were only focused on Casey. Casey never let go of her hand, walking back to the kitchen, both quietly deciding that they didn’t want to be involved in the game anymore. Alex tried to find Erin for a moment before she brought her attention back to Casey, smiling softly.
“I’ll get you something to drink.” Casey smiled.
“Can I just get some water, please?” Alex smiled.
Casey nodded. “Sure. I need to sober up a little.” She chuckled as she kissed Alex’s hand before she went to find more cups.
Alex sighed happily as she watched Casey moving around the kitchen. The smile never leaving her smile as she leaned against the countertop, but her moment was interrupted as she felt a hand on her shoulder, making her turn thinking that it was maybe Erin. And then she frowned as she found the girl she had been previously jealous of right in front of her.
“Hi?” Alex offered a small smile.
“You really think you got Casey just because you got seven minutes in a room with her? You’re not Casey’s type. We know who you are, Cabot.”
Alex frowned as she shook her head. “What is that supposed to mean?”
“You’re daddy’s girl. I’m sure you’re in school just because of your last name, and if you think you’re gonna get Casey, you’re very wrong. I might’ve let Casey have her fun tonight, but she’s normally always with me. Casey belongs to me.”
“I can definitely tell. Because she’s been with you the whole party, huh?” Alex raised her brow, giving her a defying stare as she crossed her arms.
The girl laughed as she shook her head. “Just because your friend dressed you up for tonight and you got read of your glasses, doesn’t mean you can take Casey. Didn’t you hear? She was supposed to get your attention, a bet was made.”
Alex frowned. “What?”
“Oh, you really think Casey was interested in you? Please. Look at you and look at her. Gotta say that you left it pretty easy for her to win the bet. So congrats to you too. Maybe if Casey chooses, she’ll give you half of the money, but you don’t need it, do you?” The girl smirked as she walked away.
Alex suddenly felt lightheaded as the words played in her mind over and over; she had to be lying. Casey wouldn’t do that. All this time, all those meetings they had, Casey inviting her here, being so sweet and kind even if she’s not fully sober. Did she really do this for a bet? Was she just being nice to win some money? She had to be joking, this was definitely a lie. But…it also made sense at the same time. The sudden interest in Alex, wanting her help to study even if she didn’t need it, her inviting her to the party, and coincidentally the bottle landing in them while she was distracted. They had planned this. She had fallen in Casey’s game. The thought made her feel sick to her stomach.
“Alex?” Casey placed her hand on Alex’s shoulder to get her attention. “You okay?”
Alex took a deep breath as she looked back at Casey, her eyes getting teary. “How much?”
Casey frowned. “What?”
“How much…was the bet?” Alex snapped, trying to hold back her tears as she stared at Casey.
Casey shook her head as she looked at Alex, confused. “I don’t…what bet?”
Alex scoffed. “I knew it was too good to be truth.” She grinned. “You, suddenly taking interest in someone like me. You also believe I’m nothing more than my name, right? Was it fun, Casey? To drag me into your stupid high school game so you could get some money?”
Casey placed the cups on the counter and looked back at Alex. “Alex, what are you talking about? I don’t think that. I-“
“Save it, Casey. I knew this was way too good to be truth. But don’t worry, the bet ended the moment you took me to the room, right? So whatever this was, ends here. I don’t wanna see you again.” Alex gave her a cold look before she walked away from Casey.
Casey frowned as she tried to follow Alex. “Alex! Wait!”
Just as Alex was walking to the door, she ran into Erin who was just coming down from the stairs, her laugh died the moment she saw the look on Alex’s face. “Alex?”
“Let’s go. P-Please.” Alex cried out.
Erin’s heart sank as she turned and saw Casey trying to get to them. “Let’s go.” She placed her hand on Alex’s back and they both walked out of the house as fast as they could. Leaving behind a confused Casey.
The whole ride back to Alex’s apartment was quiet, Alex staring at the window as she quietly cried, her arms wrapped around herself. Erin kept checking on her but decided to save her words, she knew Alex needed a moment to process whatever had happened back there. There had only been one time that she had seen Alex this way, and she thought she would never see her like this again, so it broke her heart. As they made their way to Alex’s apartment, Alex let out a heavy sigh and opened the door, letting Erin walk in first, followed by Alex. She closed the door behind her and leaned her head against it, her whole body shaking as she cried once again. Erin dropped her bag and walked to Alex, wrapping her in a tight hug as Alex sobbed, turning to vanish in her arms.
“Lex, what happened?” Erin whispered softly.
“I-“ Alex sobbed as she shook her head. “I was an idiot.”
Erin pulled away enough to look at Alex. “Did Casey did something to you?”
Alex looked at Erin at the mention of Casey, feeling her heart breaking even more. “I was a bet.”
Erin frowned. “What?”
“That bitch…the one I saw Casey with…she told me that there was a bet, and that’s why the sudden interest in me. I knew it was too good to be truth, Erin. I just knew it.” Alex cried out, covering her face.
Erin sighed loudly. “Lex, I’m so sorry.”
“It’s not your fault. I let myself fall.” Alex sobbed as she shook her head. “Why did this happen?” She whispered softly.
“I don’t know.” Erin kissed her head softly as she wrapped her in another hug.
********************
Alex walked through the hallway to get to her classroom, feeling like everyone was staring at her and were laughing at her. She was sure that half of the school already knew what had happened back there, and it now made sense why all of them were cheering for them to go upstairs. They were cheering for Casey to win the fucking bet and she was so proud of it. She played it so well that she was so ashamed of herself for not seeing it, focusing on how sweet, kind, and beautiful she was, it never crossed her mind that she could do this to Alex. After all, her assumption of Casey wasn’t entirely wrong. She was indeed a heartbreaker. Her trance was interrupted as she ran into someone, almost losing her balance and making her books fall to the floor.
“I’m sorry!”
Alex knelt to pick them up but the person in front of her got them before her, making her look up to find Casey in front of her. “It’s fine.” She snapped as she stood up, followed by Casey.
Casey handed her the books and nibbled on her lip for a moment. “Alex…”
“Save it.” Alex snapped as she looked at Casey for a moment before she walked away.
Casey sighed loudly as she kept walking. This was truly a nightmare for her. The fact that Alex really had believed everything that Rachel had dared to say hurt her and made her a bit upset, but she understood where Alex was coming from. The moment she laid eyes on Alex, she knew she was completely fucked, not being able to take her eyes away until she realized she was being a creep. For months she just stared at Alex and tried her best to always be the one taking their order. She cursed herself once she realized that she had gotten Alex’s order wrong the first time, so she learned it for her, and was happy whenever Alex showed up at the coffee shop. Taking a chance to talk to her had been a real challenge, thinking that Alex would completely push her away and ignore her, but was happy once she realized Alex might be interested in her too. But now, that was all gone.
Erin walked into the coffee shop and looked around, trying to find Casey who was behind the counter. She walked to her and leaned over the counter. “Can I talk to you?”
Casey looked up from her notebook and nodded. “I’m taking five!” She walked to the back door and walked to Erin, sitting with her at a table in the corner. “Erin-“
“What the fuck were you thinking? Are you seriously in middle school to make a fucking bet with my best friend?” Erin snapped, not giving Casey a chance to speak.
“Let me explain.” Casey sighed. “There was no bet. There never was.”
Erin frowned. “What?”
Casey bit her lip as she tried to hold back tears. “I never had the intention of hurting Alex. Everything I did, I did it because I wanted to. Because I had been looking at Alex for so long and I took my chance.” She shook her head as she looked at Erin. “I was never involved in any bet. Rachel was jealous when she found out I was into Alex. She’s-“ She scoffed. “She was fucking childish. I’m too old to do those fucking bets. I like Alex. I never meant to hurt her, or even take advantage of her.”
Erin sighed as she leaned back in the chair. “Well, shit.” She shook her head. “I knew Rachel was no good.”
Casey scoffed. “She thinks she can get whatever she wants.” She shook her head as she looked down at her hands. “And now Alex hates me.”
“She’s hurt, Casey.” Erin shrugged. “She really believed every word Rachel told her. Alex…she overthinks. She has anxiety. She couldn’t get in her head why you would be interested in her.”
Casey sighed. “But you believe me, right?” She looked back at Erin.
Erin offered a small smile. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone being so consistent with Alex. The way you two look at each other…nothing I had ever seen.” She shrugged. “I love Alex. But I believe you. And you gotta make this right, Casey.”
Casey nodded. “I know. But…she hasn’t been here in two weeks.”
“I can give you her address.” Erin shrugged. “She’ll probably kill me but…I hate seeing Alex so sad.”
Casey smiled. “I’d be forever thankful.”
Erin grinned. “And I thought this shit only happened in movies.” She got a piece of paper out of her bag along with a pen. “Our classes end at 4 pm. She should be home by 5 pm.” She handed it to Casey. “And you know better than to fuck this up, Casey.”
Casey nodded. “I know.”
********************
Alex groaned as she walked to the door. “Erin, I told you I wanted stay in today. I’m tired of you coming at this hour and trying-“ her voice died down as she opened the door and saw that it was not Erin.
“I’m…sorry. I just ended my shift, and I…couldn’t come earlier.” Casey offered a shy smile.
Alex shook her head. “What are you doing here?”
Casey sighed. “You’ve been avoiding me. And I want to talk to you.”
Alex scoffed. “Casey…seriously. We’re old enough to do this and-“
“And then you know I’m old enough to be doing some stupid things as getting involved in a high school bet.” Casey snapped.
Alex stared at her for a moment and sighed softly, stepping aside as she let Casey walk in. “Come on in.” She whispered softly.
“Thanks.” Casey said softly as she walked into the apartment. She turned to look at Alex and smiled a bit as she noticed she had never seen Alex dressing so comfortably.
Alex closed the door and turned to look at Casey, frowning. “What?”
Casey looked down at her hands as she smiled. “You uh…you look really cute.”
Alex tried to hide her smile as she crossed her arms. “Can I offer you a drink?”
“Are we switching roles now?” Casey grinned.
Alex couldn’t help but grin slightly. “Case…”
“I never meant to hurt you, Alex.” Casey said almost in a whisper. “There was never a bet.”
Alex sighed as she looked down at the floor. “Why should I believe you?” She then looked back up at Casey.
“Because I don’t lie.” Casey shook her head. “I know better than to lie. And I never once lied to you. I…” she scoffed. “Everything that Rachel said, it was all a lie. She was jealous. She hated the fact that I was falling for you, and that I was trying to get your attention, and I-“
“You’re falling for me?” Alex frowned.
Casey stared at Alex with wide eyes. “I- Alex. I uh-“ she cleared her throat. “I just-“
“Who’s nervous now?” Alex grinned.
Casey huffed a laugh. She looked at her hands for a moment and nibbled on her lip. “I really didn’t want to hurt you. I didn’t take you to the room because they were going to pay me.” She smiled shyly as she looked back at Alex. “Tina noticed you were distracted, everyone was drunk. I moved the bottle.”
Alex raised her brows, a smirk appeared on her face. “Makes sense.”
Casey laughed softly. “I was scared that you’d reject me. I didn’t want to take advantage of you. I just…really wanted to kiss you.” She smiled.
Alex tilted her head. “So no bet?”
Casey shook her head. “No bet. And yes…I am falling for you, since the first time I saw you, I knew I wanted to do anything in my power to get your attention.”
Alex smiled sadly, looking down again at the floor. “I really believed her.”
Casey walked slowly to Alex, her fingers going under her chin to make Alex look up at her, smiling softly as she fixed Alex’s glasses. “You look beautiful without glasses but…I really like to see you with them.”
Alex blushed slightly as she smiled. “You should be upset that I snapped at you, and that I didn’t believe you.”
“That’s childish. We’re both old enough for those games.” Casey grinned. “I’m sorry, Alex. I really am. But if you give me the chance…I want to make things right. I want to take you on a date.”
“You’re cheesy.” Alex smirked.
“And you like that, don’t you? It’s the type of thing you only see in movies.” Casey chuckled softly as she placed her hands on Alex’s neck.
“Yes. I want you to go on a date with you.” Alex smiled, placing her hands on Casey’s waist, and leaning in to kiss her lips softly.
Casey smiled for a moment against her lips, but brought their lips back together, the same butterflies as the first time showing up in her stomach.
“Cabot being the good girl and Novak being the tomboy.” Munch laughed along with Fin.
Alex rolled her eyes. “We stuck with our roles.” She smirked as she looked at Casey.
Casey shrugged. “And we made it work perfectly, even now after all these years.” She smiled as she leaned in and kissed Alex’s cheek, fixing her glasses. “Only took a date to have her wrapped around my finger.”
“Oh, says the one that was the cheesiest of the both of us. Bringing me chocolate croissants with my coffee, flowers almost every week, prepared unexpected dates.” Alex smirked.
“And you loved those. And still do.” Casey leaned in to peck her lips.
“Just get married already.” Elliot teased as he took a sip of his drink.
“This is really out of a movie, you two are too cliché.” Olivia chuckled as she looked at them.
“We wouldn’t want it any other way.” Alex grinned as she chuckled, rolling her eyes at the teasing.

Heavy Hearts Ch 13
Tumblr media
Warnings: language, pregnancy, master manipulation, toxic family dynamics. It's the beginning of the bad angst y'all. (there will be a happy ending and more fluff coming, don't worry)
One faded pink line that began to darken with each moment that went by, slowly followed by a second one, five minutes later, two more lines, ones that showed up faster, darker than the first. Tears welled in your eyes as the truth stared you in the face, there wasn’t any other reason for you to be late.
You were pregnant.
Weeks ago it felt like your world was crumbling around you. Right now it felt like it was a complete avalanche that was suffocating you, backing you into a corner that you would never be able to get out of. There was no stopping the tears sliding over your cheeks, the worry and dread surging through you while you sat on your bathroom floor trying to ignore your fate. You couldn’t even focus on a single thought, you were simply lost in your mind, staring into the abyss as you cried, so lost in misery that you missed the sound of your bedroom door opening, a small rustling out there before the bathroom door creaked.
“Oh Miss Y/n, I’m so sorry.” Larissa’s voice finally broke you out of your trance, “I was just doing some tidying, I thought you would still be out.”
“No.” You sniffled, wiping away your tears, “came home early, I wasn’t feeling too good.” Larissa’s eyes darted between you and the two tests on the basin, a frown taking over her face before she looked back at you,
“Would you like to talk about it?”
“I thought I was coming back here for a month, maybe two. Then I was going to run off and propose to the girl I wanted to be with for the rest of my life and we were going to be happy, going to finish our last year of school, become the best lawyers, move to New York and start a life. Now…” you choked out a laugh, “that girl hates me, I’m wrapped up in shit my family loves and…” another sob wracked through you, “I somehow manage to get pregnant? Everything… is completely ruined…”
“Oh sweetheart.” Larissa perched on the edge of the tub, her arm wrapping around you, softly stroking at your back, “this isn’t the end of the world, you have time to weigh out your options, you have choices.”
“I wish I did.” You let out a shaky breath, glancing up at her, “don’t get me wrong, I believe people can do whatever they want and I’m in full support of it, but I…I can’t just get rid of it, it’s not me.”
“And adoption?” She asked softly, smoothing a piece of hair behind your ear.
“If I go through nine months of hell and birth a baby, I’m not going to just give it up. Even if I wanted to, the attachment is there.” You wiped away a couple more tears.
“Well what do you want to do? Baby or not?”
“I want to graduate. I need to graduate.” You let out a groan, “oh god, what is Casey going to think?”
“That’s not our worry right now.” She stroked at your hair gently, “you think you can finish your last year while pregnant?”
“I’m going to have to.” You looked up at her, tears brimming in your eyes, “all I need to do is keep this a secret until I’m back in Boston, I won’t tell him, won’t put him on the birth certificate, I’ll deal with being disowned by my parents later.”
“You’re sure that’s what you want?”
“I know that I don’t want to stay here. I can’t. I already hate who I’ve become and it’s barely been over a month.”
“Nonsense.” Larissa chuckled softly, “you’re still the same girl I’ve always known.” Her hand stroked at your hair again, “you’re different from the rest of them, your brother’s learning, and so is Sarah. And you have me, I will be here for you no matter what you decide, no matter what state you’re in.”
“Thank you.” You sniffled, letting out a heavy breath.
“How about you get into bed, hmm?” She nudged at your shoulder, “I’ll bring you up a nice snack and some hot cocoa? I know it’s not much but for now it’s something.”
“That sounds great.” You looked up to give her a watery smile.
“And don’t worry, your secret’s safe with me.” She smiled warmly at you, helping you to your feet and pulling into a tight hug before guiding you back into your room so you could bury yourself under the covers.
**
You had hoped that a walk would help clear your head, maybe help sort out some of the wild thoughts soaring around inside of it. By the time you returned home you weren’t actually sure if it helped or not, letting out a soft sigh as you toed off your shoes, shutting the door behind yourself.
“Sweetheart?” Your mom called out from the dining room.
“I’m not hungry. I’ll grab something later.” You called back, making your way to the stairs.
“Chickadee! Get in here please.” Your father’s voice rang through the house and you let out a huff, dropping your head back as you paused at the bottom of the staircase before trudging into the dining room.
“Yes?”
“Sit down.” He gestured to the table and you let out a breath, moving through the room, stalling when your hand hit the back of a chair and you felt your breath catch in your throat. Sitting in the middle of the table were the two positive pregnancy tests.
“What the fuck?! Where did you get those?”
“Language.” He spat out, urging you to sit once again and you did.
“Well,” she started, “I went to move the empty Pepto box into the recycling and found the receipt tucked inside it. When I noticed there were pregnancy tests on the bill I simply peeked around your room a little bit.”
“You snooped through my personal space? Through my garbage?” You’d purposely wrapped the tests up in a ball of toilet paper and made sure they were hidden away at the bottom of your bathroom’s garbage can.
“I think I have the right to know if my daughter’s pregnant or not.”
“At my discretion!” You shot back and your father shot you a glare hard enough to shut you up, leaning back in your chair.
“Chickadee I thought we raised you better than this. If you were going to be off having sex you should know to be using condoms.”
“If you had just asked I would’ve taken you to the doctor, gotten you on birth control.”
“Do we really have to do this?” You asked quietly, “can’t you spare me the lecture? I’m a grown woman.”
“Well you’ve been acting like a reckless teenager since you’ve gotten back.” Caroline scoffed.
“Believe me, I’ll be keeping my head down until I’m out of here.”
“Oh you’re not going to be galivanting around Boston by yourself pregnant this fall.” She countered and you held back an eye roll.
“What? You sending a chaperone with me?”
“No.” Preston spoke up, “you’re simply not going.”
This time your heart stopped in your chest as you looked up at him with eyes wide, “excuse me? You can’t just stop me from going back to school, I’ve got a degree to finish.”
“And now you’ve got more than just yourself to think about.” She replied with a firm look, “you’ve got a baby on the way, from now on it comes first. You need proper health care, people who will help you and all that stress of pretending to be a lawyer would be no good for the baby.”
“This is ridiculous. You can’t just trap me here.” You stood from the table, “there’s doctors in Boston, I’m sure I can find a perfectly good one out there.”
“You do that and we’re yanking your trust fund.” Preston stated cooly, “no more family money.”
“What?” You gasped, turning back to the table as you tried to fight the tears in your eyes. Between school, studying and being coerced into coming home for summers in college you hadn’t exactly had much time to work yourself. While you knew that was extremely privileged, you never realized it would become part of this problem.
“Your father and I talked this through already sweetheart.” Your mom stood, coming to rub a hand over your hair in an attempt to soothe you, “you need to be somewhere with people who are going to take care of you, and this baby. We’re just doing what’s best for the both of you.”
“But..”
“No buts.” She kissed the side of your head, “we can start clearing out the guest room closest to yours for a nursery.”
“I can’t believe you.” You muttered, pushing away from her so she couldn’t pull you back as you hurried from the room so you could disappear into your own, letting the tears take over once again.
“See?” Preston gestured, “there she goes storming out of here like a damn teenager. We raised her better than that, what the hell happened?”
“We let her out of our sight for too long.” Caroline sighed, “she went and got all influenced by that Novak girl. Pregnant or not at least she’s on a better path now.”
**
You spent the rest of that day and a half wallowing in self pity, not feeling guilty about it this time all things considered. You’d hoped that if something slipped to your parents they would at least be supportive, that they’d let you finish your degree, it had been the only thing keeping you going at this point and now even it was slipping through your fingers. You’d lost Casey, you’d lost that happiness, you thought maybe a career would be enough to keep your head above the water and now you felt like you were basically suffocating. With each day that went past in DC you felt more and more life getting sucked out of you and it was getting even harder to keep fighting back. You had little to no joy left, no reason to keep going, you simply went through the movements, hoping something would change, spark what little motivation you had left.
You were in the kitchen, perched on the bench of the breakfast nook when you heard a faint noise from the front of the house, choosing to ignore it and continue to focus on what was in front of you. Even if you were no longer going back to school in the fall you figured one of the easiest ways to try and forget what was going on was to distract yourself with a law journal, legal pad on the side that you were occasionally scribbling on. Footsteps got closer until Brock’s voice broke the silence of the house,
“Hey.”
You glanced up, your brow quickly scrunching, “what’re you doing here?”
“Brought you lunch.” He held up a takeaway bag, moving through the room to put it down on the table beside you, pulling out a ginger ale from the bag, “wanted to check in and see how you’re feeling, you were pretty skittish the other night.”
“Oh… yeah.” You ran a hand over your face, “I’m fine. Nothing for you to worry about.” You flashed him a tight smile, “but thanks for lunch.”
“Course.” He smiled back down at you and you raised a brow in his direction.
“What?”
“Nothin’.” He grinned, “you’re just really fucking cute like this.”
“Oh please.” You rolled your eyes, huffing out a laugh, picking up your pen again. You were in a pair of pyjama shorts and a worn Harvard tee, your hair tugged up on the top of your head in a top knot and considering you hadn’t been planning on leaving the house, you hadn’t bothered with make up.
“I mean it.” He slid onto the bench beside you, his arm softly winding around your waist, “all cute and cozy, like something I’d come home from work to.” His fingers gently tickled at your side and you let out a squeal that morphed into a laugh as he pulled you half onto his lap.
“Brock!” You laughed, swatting at his chest.
“There it is.” He grinned, “knew I could get a laugh outta ya.” You let out a breath, rolling your eyes, though the smile remained on your cheeks. He readjusted you on his lap every so slightly, his chin coming to rest on your shoulder from behind, examining the work spread out in front of you, “what’ve you got here?”
“Don’t worry about it.” You waved him off, “it’s dumb.”
“I really don’t think an Ivy league education is dumb sweetheart.” He murmured, squeezing softly at you, encouraging you to answer his original question.
“It’s a pretty basic exercise, you look at old law journals, learn about the case, look through the evidence and write up your own questioning and arguments for court.”
“See, doesn’t sound dumb to me.” He kissed the top of your shoulder, “I think it’s pretty awesome my girl’s brilliant on top of beautiful.” His hand lingered on your stomach a little too long for your liking, sending a wave of queasiness through you.
“Brock.” You pushed on his chest, letting yourself slide off his lap onto the bench beside him, “my girl? Really? I’m not your girlfriend, can you stop with at least that one?”
“Sorry.” He squeezed at your knee and you swore he gave you a genuine smile in return, “I just figured since we’re in it for the long run now…”
“What did you just say?” Your brow furrowed as you looked up at him and he shrugged softly, realization washing over you and that all too familiar sense of dread came right along with it. “You know…”
“Well it’s not exactly like either of our mothers can keep a secret.”
“Great.” You dropped your pen down to the table, running a hand over your face again. The single one person you’d been trying to keep this from was now in on your secret. “I suppose you’re here to try and talk me out of it?”
“Absolutely not.” He shook his head, “I’m here so you know that whatever you want to do, I’m in support of. I’ve got your back.” The arm that was still half around you soothingly rubbed at your back, “you’re not alone here, okay? Mom’s already offered up the guest house, that way we have our own space but we’re still close enough that everyone can help out when I’m away at work. If you’re going to do this I want to be a part of it, watch that little rugrat grow up, teach him how to play soccer, hell, I’ll even play princess if it’s a girl.”
“You are… shockingly sweet today.” You let out a little laugh, “you know if you were like this more often maybe I’d like you a little more.”
“Awee,” he chuckled, “well you kept turning down the boyfriend experience.”
“And look where that got me.” You muttered, ducking your gaze, feeling tears blur into your eyes.
“Okay, none of that now.” Brock tapped the bottom of your chin, redirecting your gaze back up to him, frowning at the tears in your eyes. You couldn’t help the lip quiver, the slight shake in your voice.
“I’m scared…”
“Hey… hey…” his thumb caught a stray tear, wiping it away, “you can do this. We can do this. I’m not going anywhere, I promise.” You let out a watery laugh, dabbing at your eyes,
“You have any idea how many men say that on a yearly basis over shit like this?”
“Well that’s why I brought you something else too.” He reached into the bag, “maybe the reason you keep turning down the boyfriend experience is because you’re too good for that. You deserve something better, something more…like the fiancé experience, the husband experience.” He cracked open the box to reveal quite possibly the most stunning ring you’d ever seen, “marry me?”
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this…” You murmured; you could feel mountains of sorrow building up inside of you but for some reason it seemed like your body couldn’t summon any more tears. By this point you’d gone and cried yourself out, exhausting all of your resources.
“We can be our own happy family.” He offered quietly, his free hand rubbing at yours, “I know it’s fast. It’s all a little fast, but they say everything happens for a reason, right?”
Your eyes focussed on the ring, thinking about the different directions your future could go, how incredibly hard this was going to be on your own, you knew your parents said they were going to be there to help, but you knew what that meant. They couldn’t have been bothered to raise you or Ethan so how different would a grandkid be? Your dad was always at work and the more your mother was around the higher your blood pressure was, she would just nitpick and backseat parent you, scolding you for everything you did ‘wrong’ and you knew it. Doing it with them would almost be more exhausting than doing it alone, and your baby didn’t deserve that. Your gaze shifted from the ring up to Brock, a soft smile on his face you let out a sigh.
“This baby deserves two parents, and I don’t want to be shuttling back and fourth between two houses. I want it to know what a happy home is, what a loving family is…”
“And it will.” He replied softly, sliding the ring onto your finger before leaning in to kiss you gently, “I won’t let you down.” He pecked your cheek, wrapping an arm around your waist again as he gestured to the table, “how about we take a break on this stuff for now? You look a little tired, put on a movie while you eat lunch?”
“Uh…yeah, sure.” You flipped the books closed, making sure they were neatly stacked before you stood from the bench.
Brock collected the takeout bag, catching your hand in his as you wandered through the house to the tv room. You settled in your regular corner of the sectional, picking up the remote to pick something to watch while Brock unpacked lunch. You ate about half of it before you were yawning, he was right, you were tired, you were beyond tired. As you yawned again, nuzzling deeper into the cushions of the couch Brock pulled a blanket from the back of the couch, tucking it around you, his arm circling around your shoulders. While the warmth of his body was there he didn’t immediately tug you to him, letting you slowly relax into the embrace and for just a moment, you caught yourself thinking that maybe you could potentially get used to this, after all, people settled and made personal sacrifices for their children all the time.
When you woke up a couple of hours later Brock was gone, the table cleared of garbage, a second blanket wrapped around you and you spotted a note on the coffee table.
‘Parents called, I had to run. I’ll call or swing by tomorrow; we can figure out moving your things into the guest house. -B’
*
Over at the Lexington’s, post dinner drinks weren’t exactly going as planned, well, that’s to say that they weren’t exactly civil. Your mother had obviously called Eleanor the previous night, and while she’d mentioned things to Brock, the news was breaking to the rest of the family tonight.
“I cannot believe you!” Howard began, rounding on Brock who was lounged back in an arm chair, “you weren’t supposed to knock her up Brock! You were supposed to court her, charm her! Make her see heart eyes and feel butterflies, not just jump into bed with the girl! I specifically told you to date her, get her under your spell, make her think you’re the greatest thing in the world and the only option for her, her happily ever after! We are on a tight time constraint here!”
“All things considered I think I did pretty well.” Brock laughed, “and a hell of a lot faster than just buying her dinner.”
“Howard, calm down.” Eleanor cut in, a hand resting on her husband’s forearm, “the Vanderbilt’s aren’t about to let their little girl have a baby without getting married.”
“Are you sure about that?”
“Would you?” She challenged and he huffed, “a wedding and a baby will be a wonderful distraction in the papers, if anything this is a blessing, we can slide by unnoticed. Besides, if this is the way I get a grandbaby I’m not opposed at all.”
“We all know what that girl’s like!” Howard shot back, “she’s not going to stand for any of this. Hell, for all we know she’s halfway back to Boston by now.”
“Dad would you calm down, seriously.” Brock grinned with a gleam in his eye, before he shrugged “I proposed this afternoon. There is already a ring on her pretty little finger. And a dozen promises of happy family memories, romantic date nights and days being pampered in her head. That girl isn’t going anywhere.” He chuckled darkly as he leant back in his chair, swigging at his drink.

Calex (Casey Novak and Alex Cabot) Headcanon
So Casey’s a catholic which means that she’s probably been lectured about having a Husband and large family at some point in her life.
So imagine this she meets a Liberal Alex Cabot who’s an only child and never imagined herself having kids or getting married because she is married to her job and lives a very expensive lifestyle not fit for kids and they just click.
And along the way they both realise that marriage and kids is something they want with each other but neither want to carry a baby, because 9 months as a walking incubator isn’t appealing, so obviously adoption crops up in conversation.
After five years of being foster parents they end up with and army of Cabot-Novak kids, and obviously some of them go into law, others into politics but their eldest daughter decides she wants to be a cop.
Alec Cabot-Novak becomes a Detective at aged 21 becoming one of the best in the force very quickly. She’s transfers over to SVU a year or two into being a Detective and Captain Benson thanks God every day for the fact that Casey Novak and Alex Cabot were ADA’s instead of Detectives.
Donald Cregan also laughs at Liv’s pain dealing with a Cowboy Detective with anger issues who’s much too intelligent for her own good.

2, 3, 6 and 19 for the fanfic asks! 😎💕
2. The last fic I bookmarked TBR is The Shape of Soup by ekingston, a supercorp fic. The last SVU fic I bookmarked TBR was Got Your Number by electrictoes and the last Cabenson fic I marked TBR was Please Remember to Remember Me by rogue_Q. Basically, I got a lot of reading to do.
3. Okay canonverse can be a lot of fun but FUCK I love a good AU. The more outlandish the better. Give me our cops and lawyers in medieval times. In outer space for some fucking reason. Drop them in the Mamma Mia Abbaverse. Holy shit I love AUs.
6. I don’t remember which made me necessarily laugh out loud but Bound In Their Bones by skip_hence made me shriek out loud and do a giddy little leg kick and happy stim at four am, waking up my dog. You can find it bookmarked with the tag “holy shit” on my profile. ppl
19. Holy shit I have so many. The ones that show up in my fics the most are autistic Alex Cabot, ADHD Casey Novak, and epileptic Rita Calhoun. I did believe the epilepsy thing was canon for a very long time and I still don’t know why I was under that impression, but it’s canon in my brain. Alex secretly being a total romantic and obsessed with old black and white movies is another one of my favorites. Rafael and Rita have movie nights where they play drinking games with the most campy queer cult following movies they can find. I’m sort of in love with genuinesnoof’s headcanon that Rafael is obsessed with terrible horror movies about fish. IDK why but it makes me so happy. Another headcanon: Rafael and Rita have a marriage pact. Okay that’s all for now.
Ask me fic questions!

Always and Forever
Pairing: Casey Novak x Fem!Reader
Summary: Casey and Y/n go all out on their Christmas gifts for eachother this year
Content: Fluff, Christmas without the religious focus, marriage proposals, useless lesbian trope, kind of ooc casey?
Word count: 1,347
Tumblr media
“Merry Christmas, Love!” Your voice rang out through the tastefully decorated apartment, nudging the door shut with your foot and lugging armfuls of groceries over to the kitchen, where your girlfriend of nearly five years was humming along with the radio as she whisked a bowl full of pumpkin pie filling.
“Y/n, you made it! Merry Christmas to you too, let me help you with some of those!” Casey beamed when her eyes met yours, the mixing bowl abandoned on the counter as she flew from her spot to grab bags from you, pressing a sweet kiss to your cheek before turning to place things in the refrigerator.
You returned her smile as items from your bags were rushed into the pantry, and the moment your hands were free Casey found herself wrapped in a warm embrace, your arms weaving around her from behind to pull the ADA into a tight hug.
The both of you lived for these moments of domestic bliss, just you and her together without the near constant stress of work pressing at you from all angles. The hours always seemed to fly by at times like this, and fly by they did, a simple Christmas dinner for two prepared, cooked and eaten in what felt like no time at all, and all too soon you found yourselves seated in the living room,  the only light coming from the crackling in the fireplace and the twinkling lights strung along the boughs of the tree you had decorated together a week before.
“Now, I know we agreed on only one gift each, but I’ve gotta admit I went a little above and beyond with this one, It’s gonna knock your socks off, baby”
You let out a chuckle at your girlfriend’s words, partially at the use of the phrase knock your socks off, which you hadn’t heard outside of TV since you were a kid, but more because of the present you had decided on for Casey. A little more than above and beyond, you thought to yourself with a smile, fighting back a wave of anxiety that hit at the thought of your plan for tonight.
“Knock your socks off? Where did Casey go, and who’s this old man that replaced her?” You laughed, feeling your heart flutter when she answered with a wink and a quick kiss against the side of your head.
“Never mind that, you know how this goes. Rock paper scissors shoot, whoever wins gives their gift first” She replied with a playful grin, hand already held out in the position you took at this time every year.
“Rock, paper, scissors, shoot!” The both of you called out, the ending punctuated by Casey cheering as her paper took out your rock.
Going happily along with the rules, you smiled and leaned forward on the couch, watching your girlfriend root around under the tree to pull out a small box covered in iridescent green paper. Novak nodded hear head towards the tree, and you took it as a signal to move over to where she was standing, pausing at her side.
You reached forward to take the present, but Casey took a step backwards and away from you, the glint in her eye telling you something was different
“Sorry Sweetheart, not the usual kind of present. I, um, I’m opening this one for you” Casey smiled nervously, and seeing the confusion on your face, she took a breath and lowered herself down onto one knee, opening up the box to reveal a beautiful double banded engagement ring, it’s diamond reflecting the orange glow of the fire, and you let out a gasp of shock, words caught in your throat.
“Y/n, I, uh, I’ve wanted to do this for a long time, and I had this whole speech memorized, telling you of all the things i feel for you, everything you do that makes life better, but now that we’re really here in this moment? All I can say is how beautiful you are, inside and out Y/n, you light up the room wherever you go and I want... I want to have that beside me forever. What i’m trying to say is, well, I love you Y/n, more than I've ever loved anyone before, and I want to know if you would do me the honor of becoming my wife?
Casey was nervous, stuttering in a way you had never heard before, but you couldn’t bring yourself to speak, to move, everything was hitting you all at once and you had absolutely no idea what to do
You stood frozen in place for several moments, a million thoughts rushing through your head as Casey waited anxiously on the floor. The reality of the situation hit you seconds later and head flew backwards as you burst out laughing. Casey, more than confused, got up awkwardly from her kneeling position and took your hand in her own, eyebrow quirked upwards in a quizzical fashion and a slight smile working across her face at the joy in yours.
“Oh my God Casey, open your gift!” You managed to spit out between laughs, grabbing it from the coffee table and placing it in her free hand. Still unable to vocalize her thoughts, Novak cocked her head in silent questioning, but did as she was told, placing the small green box down in the place of the slightly smaller package wrapped in shimmering paper.
Running her fingers over the paper, Casey shot you a heart melting smile before her nimble fingers tore into the wrapping, revealing a circular box that looked like it was made directly from a tree cutting. Quickly you leaned over your girlfriend to flip a small latch on the side of the box, the lid coming open to reveal a second ring, again with a beautiful glittering gemstone in the center.
Casey’s eyes widened in shock, this time herself being the one to freeze, and you took the opportunity to take your turn getting down on one knee. Tears of laughter and love brimmed in your eyes, reflecting the reds and greens of the Christmas lights decorating your apartment and mirroring the look on your girlfriend’s face.
“Casey Novak... Will you marry me?”
The words came out a hoarse whisper, your voice deciding that now was the perfect time to stop working, but luckily the sound went unnoticed by the shorter woman, who was biting her lip with a grin to hold back laughter as she once again knelt down on the carpet, the ring back in her hands.
“Only if you’ll marry me, Y/n Y/l/n”
You were the first one to break down laughing again, a tearful cry of “Yes!” followed by you  collapsing into a seated position as your girlfriend repeated your actions seconds later, tucking herself comfortably against your side and pulling you into a searing kiss. Your fingers fumbled blindly along the wooden box, moving to slide the ring onto what you hoped was Casey’s correct finger as she did the same to you.
When Casey finally broke away from the kiss the two of you were gasping for air, your joyous laughter mixing with the Christmas music playing softly from the radio and creating what to the two of you was the perfect atmosphere, and you pulled Casey’s hand into your own, fingers stroking over the glittering band on your now fiancee’s ring finger.
“I can’t believe you’re gonna be mine...” You whispered, voice faltering again as tears of happiness began to slide down your cheeks, eyes shining with admiration for the woman in front of you
“I was already yours Y/n, i always have been and always will be” She replied with a sniffle, leaning forward to pull you into another kiss, softer this time, and when the two of you broke away for air your foreheads stayed pressed together, Casey’s blue eyes locking adoringly with yours.
“I love you so much sweetheart,” She whispered, mouth tugging upwards into that smile you could never get enough of.
“I love you too Case, always and forever”

Heavy Hearts Ch 10
Tumblr media
Casey Novak x reader warnings: language, hangovers, puking, general unwellness all around lol, it's the beginning of the angst folks.
Casey woke up with a soft sigh, gently stretching out her body as she rolled over in her bed. The sun was just beginning to peak through her blinds, streaming into her room, fresh morning air wafting in through the open window. She could smell the slight dewiness in the air, having fallen asleep to rain the previous night and it made her ache to get outdoors. She pushed back the covers, hopping out of bed and rummaging through her closet until she found her preferred running gear for the day, changing into it before she jogged down the stairs and out the front door.
She loved early morning runs in the city, most days she didn’t even bother to bring music with her, she liked listening to the world around her wake up and start its day. The hustle and bustle hadn’t quite began, garbage trucks and delivery orders being driven through the streets before the morning commute truly began. She often encountered other people out on morning runs, a quick nod of acknowledgement as they passed each other, though her favourite part was the quick dog walks around the block before work, getting to stop to say hello and give as many of them pets as she could.
Runs like this were among the best ways that she could start her days, they put her in the best mood and she just knew that the rest of her day was going to be great.
By the time she got home she could hear her parents in the kitchen as she came through the front door. She paused to tug off the hoodie, tossing it onto a hook before she kicked off her shoes.
“Case?!” Her dad called out and she glanced in the direction of the kitchen.
“Yes to coffee and yes to breakfast please.” She called back and she heard him laugh.
“C’mere.”
“Coffee can wait I was just gonna jump in the shower.”
“Casey,” her mom’s voice flowed through the air next, a laugh in her words as well, “your father has a surprise for you, it’ll only take a minute.”
Casey’s forehead scrunched and curiosity got the best of her, wandering through the dining room and into the kitchen. Ben was sitting at the kitchen table, newspaper and steaming mug of coffee in front of him while Grace was at the stove.
“Nice run?” He asked.
“Yeah, it’s gorgeous out there today. What’s up?” She glanced around, trying to get a clue on what the surprise could be but there was nothing that seemed out of place.
“Before you went back to school you asked me to do something for you.”
“I did?” Her head titled in confusion, earning another laugh from Ben.
“I picked it up a couple of weeks ago, figured I should probably pass it along to you now.” He slid a small box across the kitchen table, one that she hadn’t even noticed and suddenly she was piecing it together.
“Oh my god dad! You didn’t!”
“You wanted me to help you with something and who am I to say no to my favourite daughter?” He teased and Casey rolled her eyes.
“I’m your only daughter.”
“Well, what do you think?” He asked, cracking the box open and she gasped.
“That’s a little bigger than I had planned.” The diamond was gorgeous. While it was the exact one she’d wanted, the one that she knew was perfect, it was certainly a larger carat than she’d suggested.
“You said you wanted to impress her, didn’t you?” Grace asked, crossing the room to put down a plate of food for Ben, pausing to kiss Casey on the temple, “and you two deserve something really nice after all the hard work you’ve put in at Harvard.”
“Yeah, but even with the extra hours over the summer I don’t think I’m gonna have enough to pay you guys back for this…” Casey practically pouted, now that she’d seen it, in person, in her own kitchen, her heart was dead set on this particular ring. Which is why it stung so much to have to turn it down, to go exchange it for the smaller size.
“Which is exactly why it’s a gift from your mother and I.” Ben shrugged, leaving the box on the table while he dug into his food.
“Are you serious?!” She replied with a near shriek and her parents laughed.
“Casey sweetheart, this is the happiest you’ve been in a long time.” Grace said, “the two of you are meant for each other, we can both see it. This is our gift to the both of you, some families hand down rings, this is how we decided to do it.”
“Thank you.” She somehow managed to loop both of them into the biggest bear hug, warmth blooming through her chest as excitement began to bubble in her stomach. This was actually going to happen; it was becoming a reality and now she was one step closer to it. “This is so incredible. I mean it.”
She kissed both of their cheeks before letting them go, plopping into a chair across from her dad as she picked up the small box, admiring the ring. Grace let out a little chuckle, moving back to the stove to grab her own plate, pausing to fill up a mug of coffee, placing it down in front of Casey before she sat down herself.
“So?” She asked, eyes gleaming at her daughter, “are you going to let us in on any of the plan?”
Casey ducked her gaze as she blushed, a huff of a laugh escaping her lips before she glanced back up with a hesitant expression on her face.
“You’re gonna think it’s so cheesy.”
“So what?” Ben laughed, “it’s not us you have to impress. We’re just here to support you and help you pull it off if you need it.”
“I was thinking during or after the fireworks at the end of summer party?” She shrugged, “I dunno, it sounds lame. But we both really loved that night last year, everything just felt, right… ya know?”
“I think it sounds perfect.” Grace squeezed at her hand, “you start brainstorming and you let us know if you need help setting anything up, alright?”
“I will.” Casey shot her a bright smile, closing the ring box and tucking it into her hand, “I’m gonna go hide this, shower and call y/n.”
“Did she say how the engagement party went?”
“Not much, just that it was pretty lame. She got pulled off by some old acquaintance. I’m sure she’s bored out of her skull out there.”
“Well we’ll get her out here as soon as we can.” Grace smiled again as Casey stood from the table.
“Yeah. Thank you guys, again.” She beamed as she smiled at them, unable to hold back the giggle as she bounded up the stairs to find somewhere in her room to stash the ring that you wouldn’t find it later that summer.
**
The first thing you registered was the cawing of a crow outside your window that was making your head absolutely throb. The second was the sandpaper feeling inside your mouth, you did your best to swallow and there was basically nothing to swallow. As your conscious started to wake up you could feel your bra digging into your ribs, your skin aching underneath it, actually, your entire body ached. You cracked open one eye, at least you recognized your surroundings as your bedroom, and your blinds were closed, the room still bathed in darkness. Though the entire thing was spinning, you felt like you were in a wave pool and with each breath you took the nausea was getting worse.
Incredibly slowly, you lifted you head from your pillow, finding remnants of your makeup smudged on it from passing out on your stomach. You let out a groan as you pushed yourself up, cautiously rotating so you were sitting on the edge of the bed. You couldn’t remember a time you’d been this sore upon waking up, every inch of every limb ached, you noticed one of your knees was scraped up, then you realized the slit in your dress was torn nearly all the way up to your waist. There was a forming mark that you couldn’t quite make out on your inner thigh, clearly you’d taken a tumble at some point last night, you could only pray it wasn’t in front of people at the country club. You swallowed again, unsticking your tongue from the roof of your mouth and then it hit you, the faint taste of cigarettes in your mouth and you did your best not to gag. You ran a hand over your face, letting your head rest in your palm for a moment before you let out another groan, a spasm of hurt running through your body.
The ensuite bathroom was five feet from you, and at the very least you needed to pee, get rid of your bra, you could try to deal with the rest later. Once you were finished and up washing your hands you realized if you were going to show yourself downstairs to get water, medicine, anything, you needed to not look anything like you did right now. Your mother would never let you hear the end of it.
You didn’t want to risk brushing your teeth and activating your gag reflex, opting for some mouth wash instead to get rid of the horrid taste in your mouth, bracing yourself on the basin for a moment to regain some strength. You unzipped your dress, letting it drop to the floor, followed shortly by your bra. Somehow in your drunken stupor you’d decided that taking off your underwear was the only priority before bed and you rolled your eyes at yourself before stepping into the shower.
You’d only been under the stream for a few minutes before the shakes started to hit. You turned the temperature down in an attempt to regulate your body temperature, though that did nothing to help the shakes. You managed to wash your hair before you wavered and you knew whatever was still in your system was not okay with you being vertical yet so you lowered yourself to the shower floor, closing your eyes to try and stop the spinning as the water washed over you.
When you finally gathered the energy to get on your feet again you did a very quick wash and rinse of your body, scrubbing away at the smeared make up on your face before wrapping yourself in a towel and making a beeline for your bed on shaky legs. You dropped down onto it, your head now pounding, you’d been hoping to try and get some more sleep but with the way your heart was ringing in your ears you knew that was never going to happen. You so rarely got hangovers you certainly weren’t prepared for how severe this one was. Your head lolled to the side and you whined at the sight of your nightstand empty, drunk you was doing hungover you no favours, no Advil, no cups of water waiting. Dragging yourself off the bed you shuffled into some pyjamas, looking around your room for your purse with no luck, you let out a soft sigh and made your way downstairs.
Your purse was on the door in the entry way, your shoes tossed aside on the floor, keys dumped beside them. At least you’d made it home in one piece. You dug through the pockets of your purse for your phone and once again, ran out of luck. Maybe someone had plugged it in down here, you were sure it had to be somewhere, letting out a huff of defeat you shuffled into the kitchen.
The first thing you did was drop into a chair at the island, your elbows on the counter to prop your head up in your hands as you closed your eyes. The kitchen was bright, way too fucking bright for your senses right now and it made you want to disappear into your room again but you knew you needed to try and make this better. You grabbed a glass of water, returning to your spot at the island as you tried to control your shakes and take tiny sips to start to rehydrate yourself.
“Darling I thought we talked about this.” Your mother’s voice rang through the quiet air like a shrill banshee, her fingers tracing through your damp hair, attempting to untangle a few locks, “you need to do those hair treatments right as you get out of the shower.”
“I barely made it down the stairs mom.” You grumbled back, your voice hoarse, your throat hurt, still dry as sandpaper.
“You’re hungover.” She clicked her tongue, “not a surprise considering the shape you were in last night.” She moved toward the fridge, opening it to grab a bottle of sparkling water for herself, “another thing I thought we talked about, or have you forgotten the rules in the years you’ve been away? You cannot go and make a fool of yourself at events like that. You have a reputation and a family name to uphold, I’m a little ashamed on your behalf today, I hope you know that.” You ignored her, taking another tiny sip of water.
“Have you seen my phone?”
“Oh, please don’t tell me you’ve lost that along with your dignity?”
“Mom.” You half groaned, wincing at the sound of your own voice, “I get it okay, I’m sorry, you don’t need to lecture. And it’s not in my room or my purse, I just thought someone might’ve plugged it in down here.”
“I can call the club, it’s probably there or in Brock’s car.”
The glass stilled halfway to your lips and your brow scrunched as you finally looked up at her, head tilting in confusion, “why would it be in Brock’s car?”
“Well he drove you home sweetheart.”
“I… Ethan drove me home.” You struggled through the sentence as you really started to think about the night before and just how much you actually could remember. Your mom laughed,
“Why would Ethan leave his own party?” She shook her head, “you were more far gone than I thought. Everyone saw you and Brock leave together, he even texted me and your father to say you were home safe. That young man really is such a gentleman.”
“Yeah… sure.” Another wave of nausea was building up inside your body, heat churning from down in your gut all the way through you as you started to overheat again.
“You know, I am so happy that you finally said yes to a date with him!” She smiled brightly at you and your heart about dropped into your stomach, “I knew that whole thing with the Novak girl was just a phase you’d grow out of and now’s the perfect time for you and Brock to get together.” She leant in to press a kiss to your cheek, “I’m sure he’s thrilled and can’t wait to see you at dinner.”
“I think I’m gonna be sick…”
It was barely over a mutter, one that your mother didn’t even hear as she made her way out of the room and you were honestly lucky that you made it to the hallway bathroom in time. There was barely anything to throw up, water, stomach acid, but that wasn’t stopping the intense dry heaving. Your entire body shuddering, coated in a sheen of sweat as tears pooled in your eyes, another bout of stomach acid expelling from you and you were finally sure the heaving was done. Flushing the toilet you leant back against the bathroom wall, your eyes shutting as you tried to catch your breath, relishing in the cool air of the room. Before you even had time to think there was a knock at the door,
“Mom, seriously…”
“Miss Y/n?” Larissa’s soft voice came through the crack in the door as she nudged it open.
“Oh, sorry.”
“If you’re that sick you should drink this, electrolytes.” She held out a bottle of Pedialyte to you and you took it as she settled on the side of the tub, “and saltine crackers. They’ll help settle your stomach.”
“Thanks.” You smiled wearily at her, your body still tremoring somewhat, “hey have you seen my phone? I really wanna call Case.”
“No.” She frowned, “I’m sorry. You could use mine? If you’re worried about your parents knowing?”
“I—” you sighed, your head dropping against the wall behind you, “the only part of her phone number I know is that it’s a New York area code.”
“I’m sure it’s just at the club.” She offered with a small smile.
“Yeah. Were you here when I got home last night?” You asked, hoping she could help you piece things together.
“I was already in my room. But I heard you come in, two voices, sounded like Mr. Lexington, footsteps on the stairs, less than a minute later, he came back down and left. I went out to make sure the door was locked.”
“So he was in the house like… less than five minutes?”
“Yes.”
“Okay.” You sighed, cracking the bottle of Pedialyte and taking a small sip.
“You don’t remember coming home?” She asked, her brow furrowing as she looked across at you.
“No. It’s completely black. I remember saying goodnight to Kim, but things start to go out around there. Normally it’s like… fuzzy, ya know?”
“I’m sure it will start to come back to you.” She stood, squeezing at your shoulder, “c’mon, get back up to your room, I’ll bring you a hangover relief tray.”
“You truly are the only good thing about this city.”
You accepted her hand to help pull you to your feet, letting out another groan as you did so. Right now you needed to get some remedies into you and hopefully some more sleep. You could deal with the rest of this when you finally had your head on straight.
**
Casey chewed on her lip as her eyes darted around her room, ring box still in her hand as she tried to figure out where to hide it. It had to be somewhere she’d remember but hidden enough you wouldn’t spot it. She knew you likely weren’t going to be able to escape your parents until she was in the Hampton’s anyways so she could probably just stash it in her dresser for now. She’d want to pull it out to admire it and imagine the future that lay in front of the two of you anytime she felt like it.
She was distracted in her daydreams as she picked up her phone, clicking on your contact and letting the line ring a few times until a voice answered.
“Hello?”
“Morning baby! How was the rest of the party I—” She stalled suddenly, realizing the voice that answered was deep, a man’s voice and she pulled the phone away from her ear to make sure she’d called you, “hello?”
“Hello?” The voice repeated.
“I’m uh… looking for y/n?”
“Well this is her phone, who is this?”
“Casey.” She replied adamantly, starting to get annoyed. Then she remembered you had an older brother, one you bickered with frequently and her shoulders relaxed, “is this Ethan?”
“No,” he chuckled, “this is Brock.”
Casey felt her blood run cold. The last time she’d heard that name was the day after you didn’t come home from a night of partying. The name that came up relatively frequently when you spoke about Washington, the annoying family that your parents seemed to love so much and the son who they wanted you to end up with.
“Oh…” Brock started with a small laugh, “Casey… Harvard girl! The roommate! Yeah I think your name came up last night, somewhere in between all the shots.”
“Yeah… that’d be me. Can I talk to her please?”
“Sorry sweetheart. She’s still sleepin’.”  She cringed at the pet name, it practically made her skin crawl, she heard the creak of a door swing open then shut softly with a click, “yup. Out like a light. Makes sense, we had a pretty wild, late night. One too many cocktails, you know how that goes.” He laughed, “I thought she texted you before we left the party? Did she forget to hit send or something?”
“I.. uh..” Casey pulled the phone away from her ear, swiping though the screen to notice she did in fact have two text notifications from you she’d missed in her excitement over the ring. “Guess I didn’t see those.” On the other side of the line Brock let out an obnoxious yawn.
“Well Case, how about you check those and I’ll tell her you called. I’m gonna have to let you go, pretty wiped myself, think I need a nap. Man, she really knows how to tire ya out, doesn’t she?”
The phone line went dead with a click.
Casey felt like her heart was beating a million miles a minute, her stomach doing flip flops as her brain tried to process what had just happened. This had to be her imagination playing tricks on her. She nearly felt dizzy, bile starting to creep up her throat as her thumb hovered over the text icon.
