I know a lot of people say that this movie had a lot of plot holes, or was just a bad movie overall... but to me, this movie has a much deeper meaning. It talks about life and death, and helps make you realize life is too short to focus on the petty things in life, and that a life can be taken away in an instant, like with Casper the ghost and Kat's mother. It makes you enjoy the little things in life before it's too late, and I think that's what truly makes this one of my all time favorite movies. 💜

Alright so here we go. Gonna post this publicly for reasons I guess?

Over the course of the movie, we see five ghosts.

The trio, Casper, Carrigan, and Doctor Harvey. Two of those actually die during the events of the film, and they are the two to have the more detailed ghosts. The other four presumably died quite a long time ago, and have far less detail.

My theory as far as that goes is that ‘new’ ghosts are still imprinted with their bodies, but over time, they fade into the ‘blobby’ versions, since they lose the connection to their former selves that they once had. Looking also at how long it takes to jog each ghost’s memory, this seems likely- The Doc and Carrigan only needed a simple (but important!) hand gesture/item to bring their memories back, but Casper needed a specific room with specific items to remember, even though he’d been haunting his house for a long time.

As for the ‘why didn’t Casper just go find friends somewhere else’, that’s pretty much answered in the film. Every time we see him interacting with new people, his first reaction is to ask them not to be afraid or not to scream(other than the twins in the beginning, but the intro was mostly for establishing the personality of the friendly ghost). Also, when the demolition crew is running away, Casper sighs and remarks ‘Aww, every time. All I want’s a friend.’ indicating that this has happened multiple times before- he tries to make friends, but they either run from him or get scared off by his uncles.

It’s also not clear how many people actually become ghosts when they die- Amelia went to Heaven (presumably), and she mentions that Casper’s father is also there. Surely JT Mcfadden would have had unfinished business- bringing hi dead son back to life consumed his every thought, according to the papers in the attic and the very existence of the Lazarus machine, but he crossed over. When Carrigan died, her unfinished business was to get what she thought she deserved; when Harvey died, his unfinished business was probably related to Kat. He still needed to be there for her, to protect and raise her, giving him a tie to the world of the living. The rules of ghostification are pretty fuzzy, if there even are such a thing as rules for this sort of thing.

Casper could be unable or unwilling to go too far away from Whipstaff (in the beginning, at least) because on a subconscious level, he knows that’s where he needs to be. It’s his home, whether he remembered it or not. The Trio are probably less emotionally attached to the manor, and can go wherever they please.

Personally I subscribe to the Beetlejuice rules on death- it’s all very personal. Each person’s afterlife would be different based on what their life and death was. This would extend to their afterlife abilities/appearances/etc.

I also wanna say this- I find it hilarious that, once you get used to the Trio, they’re not so much ‘scary’ as ‘incredibly obnoxious’. All Casper needed to do was get someone who could figure that out quick enough.))
