Hi there! Just had this pop in my head and couldnt resist sharing with you. What if all of George's characters (Nick, Jack, Gutshot Jack, Shorty, etc.) were in a drinking match? Who would drink what and who would win? -Cat 💙 P.S. LOVE YOU!

ooh. i can see whiskey all around, also for stokes' drink of choice (i'm using last names since we got two nicks and two jacks here lol)--i have it in my head for some reason that he loves long island ice tea. no clue if that's something i made up for a fic or if he actually said that in canon, it's been a while since i've watched 😅

i feel like stokes seems like he's a bit of a lightweight because i mean, he got this drunk after only a few beers? (and I say this as someone who's drank a six pack of guiness before and been only like. tipsy? but also, to be fair, he could have been drinking a higher conc stout?)

OR maybe as he got older, past his frat boy days, he realized drinking isn't all that great and given that nick does seem to have that "healthy body, healthy mind" mentality he may avoid drinking, or leaning on it as a coping mechanism? Not to say he wouldn't drink with the team like he does in lover's lanes and whatnot but just...isn't a heavy drinker (even though i made him one in a fic, no self projection at all lol)

corelli, we did see him drink a tall glass of beer and idk for some reason with how like. romantic and in some ways fancy he is i can see him being a wine connoisseur? (sorry about the flashing gif)

there was also his character in crowned and dangerous that i'll tag once i remember his name that drink wine at the end RILEY BAXTER--another romantic type (don't ask me why i associate wine with fancy romance i just do lol)

actually...thinking more about it, a lot of the george characters drink beer?

(I don't have a gif for adam drinking apparently? I will at some point because that cap is a MOOD. i think he also drank wine on his date?)

and out of all of them, who'd last the longest?

stokes, corelli and adam will play in the game at first, before they all call it quits before they get too drunk. I can see stokes being one of the designated drivers, adam would have come on his cycle with his dog and idk maybe corelli will fold and offer to be another DD.

the older george characters; gus from the spring (literal ancient elder), coach stikes from this is us, jimmy from sex ed (who's not that old but he strikes me as a more seasoned guy who doesn't get too crazy anymore), general stevens from jangsari, all seem like guys who would probably have some beer or heavy liquors but they wouldn't partake in this.

the other george characters that I don't feel I know well enough: greg from ER, tommy baker in second string, literal george from the two and a half men cameo, innocent angel ben mcgrath from the ultimate lie--I can't see them drinking though two and a half men george did lol

and the scumbag travis petersen, the bad savannah twin, is dead so he doesn't matter 🤣

but anyway, back to this hypothetical drinking contest:

gutshot jack would pass out (maybe him and j.r. fuck around and get into a drunken playful wrestling match or something lol) and i think it would come down to shorty, evel and dalton; the cowboy, the daredevil and the veteran and I'm sure they could all outlast the others, but....I bet shorty's had a long day and he just wants to get in a tub. evel's joints are sore and he's glued to his seat while his brain is still doing jumps through flaming hoops.

College student Charlie Jordan needs to get away fast.  Her roommate, Maddy, was murdered months ago and the guilt of leaving her alone at a bar on her last night alive is eating away at her.  She puts up a request on a ride board so she can get home to Ohio.  Handsome stranger Josh Baxter answers the call.  What unfolds is a game of cat and mouse that spans the course of one night.

Ugh.  Why do I keep doing this to myself?  ALL RILEY SAGER BOOKS ARE THE SAME...and that's not a compliment.  This story was not meant to be a book...maybe a movie, but even then I'm sure I'd just be yelling at my tv screen instead of my Kindle about how STUPID Charlie was.  All of the characters in this book are beyond idiotic and the motivation behind the revenge plot was absolutely ridiculous.  The only reason I gave this two stars instead of one was because I was surprised by the identity of the killer...though I probably shouldn't have been because again ALL RILEY SAGER BOOKS ARE THE SAME.  At least the chapters were short.

Main Storylines:

Silas:

The residents of Hollyoaks were gripped by fear when it appeared that there was a killer amongst them in 2011. After killing India Longford in December 2010, Silas made plans for Lynsey Nolan to become his next victim. Fortunately, Lynsey was saved from harm when Riley Costello, Silas’ grandson, heard her screams and Silas made his escape. However, Lynsey knew that Silas was her attacker, sparking off a game of cat and mouse between the pair...

After killing Bex and Rae, Silas’ sick game with Lynsey stepped up a gear, and he told her that he planned to take another life on Halloween, but Lynsey could save the woman if she could work out her identity. Lynsey’s obsession with Silas cost her her job, home and friends but she refused to give up. Meanwhile, having discovered that Mercedes had been cheating on Riley, Silas kidnapped her and planned to kill her once she’d given birth. As Halloween approached, Silas’ downfall began when he accidentally killed his own daughter, Heidi, mistaking her for Lynsey. The police finally began to take Lynsey’s claims seriously and Silas was arrested, whilst Mercedes was saved just in the nick of time. 

Jacqui’s Rape:

Hollyoaks explored the issue of consent in early 2011, when Jacqui McQueen accused Gilly Roach of raping her. Having slept with Jacqui, the girlfriend of his best pal, Rhys, Gilly insisted that their drunken night together was consensual. But with Jacqui insisting that she had not consented, Gilly was arrested and the case went to trial. In a unique move, Hollyoaks invited a selection of viewers to act as members of the jury for the case. After both parties gave their accounts of events, the jury decided that there was insufficient evidence to charge Gilly, and he was found not guilty. However, some months later, Gilly admitted to not seeking consent from Jacqui.

Esther’s Arrival:

Tom found himself in a whole heap of bother in January when he attacked an intruder at the Osborne’s house. The intruder, a young woman, introduced herself to Frankie as her Granddaughter, Esther, and she was quickly invited into the family. However, Tom’s actions came back to haunt him when he was sent to a youth court for the attack. 

Mercedes’ Affair:

After Seth discovered her affair with Carl, Mercedes took drastic action to stop him telling Riley, and lied that she was pregnant! Riley was overjoyed by the news but Mercedes was faced with a big dilemma. How would she break the news that she wasn’t really pregnant? Myra soon came up with the perfect solution to her daughter’s predicament when Mercedes took a tumble at The Loft some weeks later.  Riley insisted on rushing her to hospital, where Mercedes was given the shock of her life - she really was pregnant after all! 

Over the months that followed, Mercedes and Riley planned their wedding, all the while, Mercedes kept the truth about her affair secret. However, Mercedes was hit by an uncharacteristic pang of guilt as she walked down the aisle, and she told Riley and the shocked congregation everything! Riley was devastated as Mercedes revealed that she couldn’t be sure who her baby’s Father was, and Mercedes’ actions incurred the wrath of Silas, who promptly kidnapped her, and locked her up in a vault under The Dog, planning to kill her once she’d given birth. Mercedes was eventually rescued when the truth about Silas’ murders came to light and Mercedes later gave birth to baby Bobby. 

Bart/Jason/Sinead:

Teenagers, Bart and Sinead’s, relationship didn’t go down too well with their families, so the pair fled the village! However, the pair quickly discovered that being Chester’s answer to Romeo and Juliet wasn’t all it was cracked up to be when they ran out of cash. Luckily, Jason was on hand to help and arrived with some money, much to the annoyance of Sinead. Infuriated by Jason’s presence, Sinead stormed off, leaving Bart and Jason to fend for themselves. However, Bart and Jason soon found themselves confronted with a shotgun when they broke into a house to look for food, and the pair were soon locked up in the owner’s cellar. With nothing else to do, the pair had a heart-to-heart, which quickly lead to a kiss. But, a heartbroken Sinead was just outside. And had heard everything...

Britzeee:

Wannabe wag, Mitzeee, was stunned when she caught Brendan and Ste kissing and soon decided to turn the situation to her advantage, telling Brendan that she would keep his secret if he became her manager! And so, Britzeee was born! 

Separately, 2011 was an eventful year for both Brendan and Mitzeee. Over the Summer Brendan would be joined in the village by his teenage son, Declan, and he would soon be left with plenty of explaining to do when Declan walked in on him beating Ste! Brendan found himself spending much of the latter part of the year in prison when Silas framed him for Rae’s murder, whilst Mitzeee feared for her life when she discovered that Warren had murdered his ex, Louise Summers.

Hollyoaks Later

Our annual late-night dose of Hollyoaks returned in September. Stories this time centred on the McQueen’s trip to Ibiza for Mercedes hen do, Silas’ hunt for another victim, culminating in the murder of Rae and Riley’s stag do, which saw Seth believe he had killed a stripper. Lives were in peril in a white water rafting accident whilst there were japes aplenty as Duncan and Ricky headed to fat camp! 

Other stories:

Cindy returned to the village in March, minus her new husband, Alistair, and daughter Holly. She soon revealed that Alistair had died after falling off an Alp, leaving her a millionaire! She used the money to enrol Holly in boarding school and open up her own spa, ‘Cinergy’.

Ste was heartbroken to learn that Lee and Amy were moving to New York, taking Leah and Lucas with them. However, at the eleventh hour, Amy decided to stay, and Lee left the village alone.

Theresa’s life was left hanging in the balance after she fell down a lift shaft.

There were big changes at Hollyoaks High when it was turned into a 6th form college, and we were introduced to new students, Maddie, Tilly, Jono, Neil, Callum and George. 

HCC also gained some new students as Annalise, Ash, Barney, Scott and Rob joined as freshers.

Suzanne Ashworth returned to the village, pregnant with Darren’s twins! She gave birth to Francine and Jack in the 3000th episode. Meanwhile, Darren got together with Nancy.

At Christmas, Doug contemplated suicide. However, he was visited by the spirit of Steph Dean, who convinced him that his life was sill worth living. 

Liberty was joined in the village by her Father, Dirk and her Brothers, Dodger and Will.

Wheatley Baxter

Wheatley is currently the newfound president of the culinary club at his small town (but fictional location I’ve yet to name set in someplace like north eastern Tennessee) high school. This is the first year in many that the culinary club has actually had a president and teacher representative, so this whole experience is very new to all of the current student body. Wheatley, a usually shy and quiet kid typically hiding in back of all the home economics classes, decided to act upon his passion and jump start a new, and somewhat awkward, era of the culinary arts club.

Personally, if Wheatley could get anything out of his high school career, it would be to be taken seriously by his peers. Baking started as a hobby, turned into special interest and hobby, so he takes everything very seriously. He isn’t proud or boastful of his work and can sometimes be quite hard on himself, but he just hopes all of this will work out for him in the future in terms of career path. He wants to be acknowledged for his hard work, but doesn’t exactly have the self confidence to put himself out there.

In a random turn of events, choosing to become president of the culinary arts club has landed him a part-time gig as a magical boy. A job, Wheatley doesn’t understand how and why he met the criteria for, but he accepts it nonetheless...he would just rather leave out all the unnecessary sparkles and troublesome powers that come with it all. Though, no matter how uncut he feels for the job, he eventually comes around after learning there are other people out there just like him.

Likes: Baking (duh.), chiptunes and low-fi beats, strawberries and strawberry-flavored things, cats, Sega Genesis games, autumn, and flannel.

Dislikes: bugs and snakes and other creepy crawly things, (bad) puns related to his name or hobby, arrogant people, neon colors, and the lack of school funding going towards his club and the home ec. room.

Appearance:

Wheatley’s hair is always a mess. He has short, curly, red hair and lots of freckles on his face and arms, but mostly centered around his nose and cheeks. He’s skinny, but not lanky and in no way fit or in shape.

He wears lots of oversized flannel and converse shoes.His voice is more on the quiet side and somewhat raspy. He also has a bit of a southern drawl that comes out from time to time.

Review: Survive the Night

Synopsis: 

It's November 1991. George H. W. Bush is in the White House, Nirvana's in the tape deck, and movie-obsessed college student Charlie Jordan is in a car with a man who might be a serial killer. Josh Baxter, the man behind the wheel, is a virtual stranger to Charlie. They met at the campus ride board, each looking to share the long drive home to Ohio. Both have good reasons for wanting to get away. For Charlie, it's guilt and grief over the murder of her best friend, who became the third victim of the man known as the Campus Killer. For Josh, it's to help care for his sick father. Or so he says. Like the Hitchcock heroine she's named after, Charlie has her doubts. There's something suspicious about Josh, from the holes in his story about his father to how he doesn't seem to want Charlie to see inside the car's trunk. As they travel an empty highway in the dead of night, an increasingly worried Charlie begins to think she's sharing a car with the Campus Killer. Is Josh truly dangerous? Or is Charlie's suspicion merely a figment of her movie-fueled imagination? What follows is a game of cat-and-mouse played out on night-shrouded roads and in neon-lit parking lots, during an age when the only call for help can be made on a pay phone and in a place where there's nowhere to run. In order to win, Charlie must do one thing--survive the night. 

My Review:

Yes! I didn’t think it would be possible for Riley Sager to disappoint me and so far I have been right! This book is probably my first closed “stuck-in-a-car” kind of trope and even though originally I wasn’t sure I was going to like it, I really ended up loving how Sager executed the whole premise. I am starting to get more and more certain that I know what the big reveal is going to be or who the bad guy really is and let me just say, when it comes to Sager’s books I literally know nothing. I was really taken by surprise and the ending left me stunned and shaking my head in awe. I mean, talk about a quality author. Forever a Riley Sager fan.

To begin with, Survive the Night is about a girl named Charlie, who is grieving over the murder of her best friend/roommate by a killer fittingly named “The Campus Killer”. She wants to get as far away from her university campus as possible so she accepts a ride share with a stranger, who ends up having a lot more secrets that she could have ever imagined. I seriously loved this plot, it had so many different levels and I never grew bored of it because it was super fast paced and exhilarating as I felt as though I was riding in that car along with the two characters. I didn’t think the car-trip trope would be my thing but I absolutely devoured this book and it was seriously, suspense-central all throughout. I can see similarities between this book and No Exit but for me I think this one is everything that I wished No Exit was. The suspense lasted a lot longer and many questions we had to wait for the whole book to be done in order to find answers for. I liked that way more.

Secondly, the characterization was amazing, as always. The main heroine, Charlie is very complicated and flawed and yet she changes and develops into a different person as the book progresses, in accordance with the experience she is going through and I think that is very realistic. She definitely felt very real to me and I loved her little quirks, like her obsession with movies, having had that same obsession myself. I also really enjoyed all the movie references and seeing different things that were unique to each and every character, which made them all separate individuals who stood out in their own ways. 

Finally, the writing style is exceptional, as it always is in my opinion when it comes to Riley Sager. Perfect writing style for a thriller, straight and to the point without being choppy or cutting out important aspects like setting the scene and painting us a picture of the action as it is happening. While with some books I have a hard time getting through the writing, Riley Sager never disappoints me in that area or any other area for that matter. It’s just so smooth and flowing, like a breath of fresh air.

In conclusion, I would recommend this novel to any thriller lover out there or even someone who likes a very fast-paced and suspenseful read. I have heard mixed reviews about this book so far but in my opinion it was amazing and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed if you give it a try. I still love Lock Every Door the best but this one might now be my second favorite. Can’t wait to see what else Sager comes up with!

5 books you should read this summer

While we are at home amid the second wave of the pandemic, here are some books to kill the boredom:

1. The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo

Nghi Vo's debut novel, The Chosen and the Beautiful follows the story of Jordan Baker, an immigrant, socialite and magician. However, the author’s credentials (Lightspeed, Women Writing the Weird, and a finalist spot for the Shirley Jackson Award) look good for an audience who also likes geeky stuff in general, as does the plot and vibes of this dark fantasy.
