Comics Read 08/13- 20/2023
Over this period I of time I read Rockstars written by Joe Harris, art by Megan Hutchison-Cates, colors by Kelly Fitzpatrick, designer Tom Muller, letters by Michael David Thomas, and edited by Shawna Gor. The edition I read this time was Rockstars The Complete Series as published by Vault. Years ago I read the first arc, “Nativity in Black Light”, in the trade paperback as published by Image Comics. I intended to get the second arc’s trade paperback, “Children of the Beast” as published by Image, but somehow missed it. Anyway, I am glad I got this edition as it encouraged by to reread the first arc which I otherwise remember next to nothing about. The page I scanned to illustrate this post, with its myriad references to our world’s rock ’n’ roll icons and legends may be the part I most clearly remember.
Tumblr media
A quick search on my tags reveals I have never written about Joe Harris on this blog. This really emphasizes how long it has been since I have read any of his work. I have been writing about all the comic books I read for the better part of four years, and even though I was reading most of what he wrote for a while, none of it was during this time! I first became aware of Harris around 2013, when I was preparing to attend my first New York Comic Con. I went to a signing at Forbidden Planet the same week to get some comic books signed. There were four comic makers there. For some reason I now only remember the two that I was not there to see. One of them was Joe Harris, who at the time was primarily promoting his The X-Files season 10 comics (before the revival meant there was a tenth season of the television show). I have a complicated relationship to TXF. It was the first show I really obsessed over, it’s the first I feel angrily disillusioned over. I’m writing something about it in my other Tumblr for the anniversary.  That night, I bought the trade paperback Great Pacific, one of Harris’s other creator owned comics. I liked it a lot and started following his creator owned output. I bring this up because the lead characters of Rockstars, Jackie and Dorothy, have a Mulder and Scully-esque dynamic. Jackie is driven by his family history and seeks answers through mystical uses of cards. Dorothy is a journalist, and seeks answers that she can safely publish. These two character arcs were not really developed enough either of them, but Jackie gets to a more interesting crossroads.
More directly relevant to this book, between reading the first arc the first time and reading this all now, I have steeped myself more in rock ’n’ roll legends than I was doing the first time around. Among other things I watched Brian De Palma’s The Phantom of the Paradise which reminded me about how often Faustian bargains and early death have been staples of rock legends since nearly the beginning. The plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and “The Big Bopper” J. P. Richardson pretty much solidified this. This event is included in Rockstars, though the way is in questionable taste. (Coincidentally, that plane crash was also important to the plot of a famous episode of TXF.)
The plot of Rockstars, starts with investigating the mysterious deaths of a couple of groupies decades apart. There are ghost gangs of the groupies interfering with the investigation and they tend to be herald by the wrong lyrics of famous songs. The deaths of the murdered ones are related to demonic champions of the bands. Each arc covers a different demon in relation to a different band. The first band is an arch-typical second wave British invasion bad from the 1970s, and the second is arch-typical early hair metal band from the 1980s. I am more familiar with the former than the latter, despite actually living through parts of the 1980s. The plot didn’t really add up for me. But I love a lot of the details in the drawings, nods to famous theories and art. I also am touched by the concept of how generations are bonded because we each go through the same cycles of cultural events. I just wish that Dorothy’s character design wasn’t so close to some of the groupies in flashbacks or ghost form. It was needlessly confusing.
I feel like, of what I have read, the best comic books about loving music are Kieron Gillan and Jamie McKelvie’s Phonogram and The Wicked + The Divine. This isn’t like either of those, and that is a good thing. For all it’s flaws, I wish there was more of it.

[Masterlist][Part 2]
Tumblr media
・ ‥…━━━━━━━━━━♡♡♡━━━━━━━━━━…‥ ・
Sam promised herself that she'd focus on Tara and the gang first before learning to let new people in again in her life. That promise was made when they all moved to New York after the murders in Woodsboro. After Richie. A betrayal like that is a valid reason for her to be closed off and be suspicious of anyone her sister or her friends meet. The same could be said for Quinn, Ethan, Anika, and everyone else she had met when they were introduced to her. Sam did warm up to the three the longer they stayed. She felt a little more comfortable with them when her gut told her that maybe they were genuine people. But she still almost kept to herself. She almost didn't have any friends outside them other than Danny their neighbor next door.
Being the oldest and mother figure of the group meant she worked for her and Tara's share of rent and other needs. Even though their mother sends money for bills and such, Sam wanted to work still. Though she knew what she get weren't much it didn't hurt to start saving her own money. So she worked to keep herself busy but not too much to not acknowledge that she was suffering such a mental scar from the attacks. One of those jobs was in a diner a few blocks near them. It paid okay and the staff are kind but Sam rarely bothered to get too close to them. All she ever knew from them is that they were willing to offer a smile and small conversation.
Usually, she takes the morning shifts, other times she takes the graveyard ones. You can pretty much figure out which shift she preferred over the other.
The regulars were introduced to her on her first shift by Dale, the main cook. There was a couple, John and Amy, who was always on time in the morning and order eggs and toast only with two refills of drip. Rex is a sculptor who mostly sits in the corner and has a few sketches by the table with him, only ordering an omelet with ketchup. There's also a programmer named Adrian who gets a lot of coffee and a BLT at night. Sometimes his friend Ben joins in with fries. A young woman named Adelaide who works from home and is always on the phone while she ate her waffles and vanilla milkshake. Adelaide would go by the mornings if she wakes up early or comes by near the evening when she could.
Lastly, there was Y/N. Sam has figured before that she looked around the same age as her. Cate mentioned when she was teaching her around that she's been here way before her and she pretty much knew everyone in the diner. She was mostly in the morning with a few files in her hand. She's an assistant in an independent law firm. There were times that she came by night and read some of the files she had all the while taking a sip of her joe now and then, other moments she was taking notes for a case assignment that her boss told her to take a look for him. Sam always gets a warm greeting from her as she did with everyone else when she enters the diner and interacts with her whenever deemed necessary. She thought she was too nice to be true.
"You from New York?" Y/N asks her as Sam fills her mug and couldn't help but doubt for a second if she were going to be honest or not,
Y/N always had a keen eye. She liked watching everyone else and let the world work. That meant she liked observing the customers that enter the diner every now and then, noticing how John always drink his coffee slowly to match Amy's pace and always offers an extra toast to her. How Adelaide sometimes start scribbling on her tissues while she talked to her boyfriend who she assumed lived away from New York. The fidgeting Cate does when she's serving Rex and giggles a little when she talks to him. Y/N could see how tired Sam was even when she had just started her shift a few moments ago. The neatness of her diner clothes, layers of makeup, and fake smile couldn't mask the exhaustion the woman has felt for who knows how long. She didn't want to pry about anyone's story so she tries to offer what she only can to someone who deems her a stranger, kindness. It doesn't hurt to treat anyone fairly.
"No, not from around here. I'm just trying to start over." She answers half-heartedly, trying not to give away any information about her at all. Sam sees a gentle smile from her and she couldn't help but feel the burning sensation on her cheeks.
"I wish you well for that. Everyone deserves a restart." And with that, Y/N thanked her for refilling her.
Those were one of many encounters Sam had with her. There were times Y/N would order 2 cups of coffee for her to share with anyone on the staff and reluctantly Sam accepted her third request at the random times she offered. She was beyond suspicious. Her doubt was understandable given the fact that she went through a lot that broke her sense of trust in anyone. But her cautiousness was only met with a tender conversation. Y/N would always ask how she is and the first and ever personal information she has ever given to anyone outside her family was her. Sam vaguely talked about how Tara has been slowly losing interest in seeking help and acting like nothing happened. Of course, there are a few changes here and there to make it seem like a normal rant about her younger sister and Y/N listened intently to her.
Or maybe it was because she was too distracted by the beauty of the older Carpenter sister.
Those seeming doe eyes that hid too many secrets.
Another night shift has come and to Sam's discomfort, she had to be at work. She just came from therapy and her second doctor had just given up on her, making her night already more dreadful than it was. And just to top things off the students who have been visiting the diner lately have been making it their job to worsen her night by being obnoxious and gossiping over her. They weren't even trying to keep it down as if they were back in high school and Sam had just stolen the famous girl's ex-boyfriend. Tara had told her the rumors about her and Woodsboro before and she couldn't care less about what a stranger, who wasn't even there, would think. It was the breaking point when one of them spilled their milkshake on her "accidentally". The smug smile the girl wore before she did it was almost too easy to miss but little did they know that Y/N had been watching them silently the entire time. The woman's had enough of their disturbance. She had been gripping on her pen hard to almost split it in half.
"I'm so sorry, miss." The girl in white apologized with a snide tone. Her friends giggle at her antics on the now pink-stained light blue blouse Sam wore. It just happened to be a strawberry milkshake too. Just last week a girl threw her orange juice at her when she was on her way home with dinner. At this point she thought she's collecting all the fruit flavored drinks.
"D-Don't worry, I'll get it cleaned up." Sam begrudgingly states while avoiding her eyes before she went to turn around but stopped when she saw how she almost bumped into someone,
Familiar Chelsea boots stood before her.
"I beg to differ." They hear the person say before the woman realizes who it was.
"And who are you supposed to be? Her friend?" One of them asks cockily to which Y/N smiles at their confidence. She had her sleeves rolled up already, coat resting back in her booth and Dale was waiting for her cue to tag along after she signaled him from her table earlier.
"Didn't your parents ever teach you some manners on gossiping about people you don't know? Let alone the one serving you your meals and minding her damn business?" She had slowly paced past the unmoving Sam Carpenter that watched closely. Both hands rested on the side of their table and her anger was prevalent from the way she carried herself in the scene.
"She's a lying snake and a murdering bitch!" The other one barked from her seat.
"Let me guess, you got that from Reddit? What else are you going to believe next, that Beyonce's part of the Illuminati?" Y/N mocked her statement and that's when Sam realized that she knew about the rumors surrounding her, that she knew some bit of her past.
The girls had been quiet after she pointed out their bullshit. Sam had always seen her be courteous and approachable when she stops by, her smiles almost making her eyes crinkle when waving at them, and treated everyone with reason, but tonight was different. This was a woman who has lost her patience after holding it for so long,
"I'm going to ask you to leave. People like you don't deserve to be served when you treat the servers here like they're nothing." Y/N ordered with her eyes unblinking with focus.
When no one moved, Y/N let Dale handle the rest by approaching the table and the girls scurried fast before they were going to be thrown out by the man who stood almost six feet tall. Sam heard a few yells at the girls to leave the diner when they exited the place and her gaze follows back Y/N who had changed her demeanor. The cook pats her back for her handling the situation and thanks her before he gives Sam a pat as well and comes back to his previous spot. It was then that the woman offered her the unsparing eyes that always looked at her and asks,
"Are you okay?" Sam thought it sounded so sweet, all she could respond was a faint nod. She didn't even comprehend how a bit close she was already to her until a hint of soft vanilla could be smelled from her. Not the kind where it almost smelled artificial like those vape juices, but it was almost authentic. The woman before her then fishes out something out of her back pocket and extended her handkerchief.
"Here. You got an extra blouse, dear?" Another question follows after Sam takes it and started wiping away some of the liquid.
"No, mines in my apartment, and it's a few blocks away," Y/N hears her voice again after it was silenced earlier, "Hey Dale, Peter doesn't mind his servers being out of uniform for a situation like this, right?" She shouts at the cook who was just about to send a plate to Dolly, Sam's partner for the shift tonight.
"Nah, let me handle him when he asks next time. I gotchu Sam." Dale nods their way.
Y/N then started unbuttoning her shirt and it revealed a white tank top underneath her white button-up shirt. Sam knew should be looking away but couldn't even help herself. Her attention was so close on her slightly toned arms until she snapped out of her daze as the woman handed her top, "Here, you can borrow this for now."
Dolly went to grab a mop and started cleaning the rest of the drink on the floor, "I'll take it from here, Sam." She reassures her and Sam was beyond grateful of the people supporting her.
"A-Are you sure?" Sam looks back at Y/N who hasn't fazed.
"Yeah don't worry about it, Sam." She beams.
The Carpenter girl then watched her walk back to her booth like nothing transpired and quietly apologized to the remaining customers she'd passed by before sitting down. But if Y/N was being honest, she was still trying to calm down from the adrenaline. She was well aware that violence was never the option, yet the possibility for things to go south was out there. She never wants to ever resort to that. Sam then finally moved from the spot she was seemingly glued onto since the confrontation and went to change in the staff room. While she was away, Y/N ordered a martini and piña colada instead of finishing her coffee. Caffeine wouldn't help flush away the rush that still lingered. In between changing her top, Sam couldn't help but wonder why someone like Y/N would stand up for her when she barely knew her.
But that thought was pushed aside when she started slipping into the button-up shirt that was handed to her by the very woman she was curious about and a whiff of her scent made its way to her nostrils again. Sam paused for a second to process how addicting Y/N's scent was. Even her damn perfume was almost sweet. After pushing her thoughts away and finishing closing the shirt, she tossed her ruined blouse in her bag and went back out to continue her shift but only to be stopped,
"Hey, I kinda asked Dale to give you a break so... care to sit with me?" Y/N wondered before the drinks she ordered arrived with Dolly winking at her. The woman shyly smiles back at her before she left them alone and dealt with another customer.
"Yeah, I'd… actually like that." Sam settled on the other side of the booth as she slide the glass of martini to her, "Oh, I'm not allowed to drink while on—"
"Take it easy, Sam. You've been through a lot just now so take it. It's on me." She waves off before taking a big sip of her piña colada.
The woman reluctantly takes a decent amount from her glass while Y/N fixes her files that had been slightly scattered on her side of the table. It was the right moment for Sam to finally pop the question,
"You knew?" It came off pretty fast, making Y/N tilt her head.
"About Woodsboro, I mean. I'm sorry that came off harder than intended." Sam clarified her question and apologized for being forward to which Y/N didn't mind.
"That's alright. I've only read two news articles about it but other than that, it's all I know."
"You don't have to tell me about it, Sam. You said you wanted to start fresh, and you don't owe anyone an explanation." Y/N assured her and the Carpenter girl countered, "No, I feel like I can trust you about… all of this." Sam replies before taking a deep breath.
From being the daughter of the original killers in the Woodsboro murders to her seeing visions of her dad in the mirror and being a victim of the ghost face attacks, she spared no details throughout her story, her therapy sessions going almost nowhere because she'd scare them off and Y/N never stopped her flow and listened intently to everything she said. Not even a single sound came out of her mouth as Sam spoke. The only thing she ever offered were observant eyes that watched every move, like how the crease on her forehead slowly increased as she went on or the hint of distaste in her voice when she mentioned her deceased ex-boyfriend. She barely bats an eye when she even admitted that she enjoyed killing him and Amber. Not a single change of muscle movement on her face other than taking a few sips from her drink and blinking now and then.
When Sam finished telling her whole story, she had been anticipating the request for her to leave and never come back, just like the one her psychiatrist said when she told him the truth that afternoon. She had grown to expect that from anyone now. Yet all she heard was an exhale from the woman she shared the table with,
"That's... a lot to take in." She hears her note as she rub her chin,
"I'm sorry you had to go through all that, Sam. You didn't deserve it." Y/N continues with empathetic eyes.
"You don't… feel like the need to push me away?" Sam asks, and for once she feared someone's answer more than anyone else. Almost too afraid that she'd scare Y/N away.
"No, not really." She told nonchalantly.
Sam stared blankly at her as she moved to cross her arms and looked down from her seat. She couldn't tell if she was about to take back her statement or maybe ask her more about the attacks. Yet Y/N was able to catch Sam off guard as she went to finish her martini,
"Not going to lie, those two deserved to die for what they did— I mean… committing murders because your movie franchise sucked? That seems childish, especially for an adult man." Y/N comments on her thoughts, not realizing it made her choke on her drink.
"Oh my god, Sam— are you okay?" She tries to offer her a glass of water though the Carpenter girl waves it off.
"No, no, it's just— you're right their motive seemed childish." A laugh follows, and it makes Y/N smile that she witnesses her being unguarded. She almost felt too lucky that Sam let herself be this vulnerable to her now.
"Thank you, for not turning me away and for always listening," Sam says after calming down.
And Sam meant it. It was nice to be heard and not hated for the first time. She felt safe knowing that she could trust a new person for once. She still has a long way from being able to trust again, but small process is still process.
"You're welcome. You deserve it." The woman says as she leans forward on the table and rested both elbows close to the edge, "If you need someone to talk about... this, I'm always open. No matter what it may be, I won't turn you away." Y/N continues with her signature smile this time.
After that, Sam went on with her shift while Y/N picked back up the papers she had scanned before the confrontation. It's a good thing she noted down her thoughts to remember where she left off and continued looking through some of the witness reports she had brought with her for their recent case. Sam would sometimes steal a few glances from her and offer a small smile whenever she gets caught. That was the moment she started growing more fond of their diner's regular. Each visit felt more special than the last and each offer of coffee breaks has made both of them closer. Whenever Sam wasn't on duty, Y/N would feel a little bored but Sam was able to text her and ask about her day. When there was someone who wanted to talk shit about her, Y/N wouldn't hesitate to spit back at them or push the person when someone throws their drink at her. The Carpenter girl appreciated the gestures and sometimes feels too bad that she gets to be splashed at, but the woman didn't mind. Tara got to meet her one day when she visited Sam to work and hanged out a little just to kill time. She was very skeptical of Y/N at first, but the way her sister eased up around her gave her the impression that she was trustworthy. Sam's trust is hard to earn after all.
The night was about to come, and Sam had just finished her shift when she happen to encounter the person that has been making her days ten times better than she ever expected. Y/N always wore a pantsuit to work, switching from 4 pairs. Today she was wearing the brown one that had a waistcoat and she was killing the style. Sam never gets tired of her presence or the way she always presents herself. She just looked ravishing in a pantsuit. Y/N had her coat neatly folded on her right arm that held folders while her messenger bag rested on her right shoulder. The smile that was so familiar to her greeted Sam Carpenter warmly that she couldn't help but blush,
"Good evening, Miss Carpenter. I'll be your chauffeur for tonight." Y/N announces with an accent. The attempt makes Sam laugh, "If that's your take on a British accent, you need to work more on it." She teased softly, shaking her head.
"C'mon, I'll walk you home." Sam hears her offer and gestured her occupied arm for her to take, which she happily does so.
"How chivalrous of you, Miss Y/L/N. Keep this up, and I might start falling for you." Half of it was a joke, but she was indeed falling for her, harder than Sam even realizes. If only she knew that Y/N had already fallen for her a while now.
She kept herself composed after Sam's teasing. Both of them chatted casually as they walk through the streets of New York. Y/N talked about her day at the office and how their copier was jamming down. It was annoying her and she had to kick it a few times before it worked again. Sam, on the other hand, shared about how a costumer had a screaming match with a date while eating and almost broke things in the diner. Dale was almost livid when the woman raised her plate and was about to throw it at the poor guy. Moments like these were nice for Sam. The life that was just mundane for once and not surrounded by the craziness of her past that still lingers. No screaming stranger threatening her, another flavored drink being thrown her way or a masked psycho trying to kill her, but a quiet night. Laughs were shared, jokes were thrown at each other, and flirts slipped here and there to make it seem like it was nothing. Even if the world around them was a little overwhelming, they were stuck in their own bubble cherishing each other's presence. Y/N was content and she had gathered enough courage until they reached Sam's apartment building. She collected her thoughts and watched her let go of her arm,
"This is me," Sam gestures to the building door, "Thank you for the walk, Y/N. It was... nice." She follows up with a light blush present on her cheeks. She hoped Y/N didn't notice them.
"Yeah, it was." Y/N smiles at her and scratched to back of her head.
"Look, I've been thinking, do you want to grab dinner sometime? You know— like a date. If you don't mind." The woman begins to avoid her brown eyes. Y/N was way too damn shy, and it made the brown girl giggle.
Sam then approaches her and almost closes the gap between them, leaving a peck on her cheek that it made Y/N jump. She turned so red it was almost like she was cherry. It was a first to witness her like this and it made Sam giggle even more as she didn't move away from her spot,
"I don't mind at all. I'm free by 6 pm tomorrow. No need to be fancy or grand, anything cheap would be fine by me." The Carpenter girl move close to her ear to whisper it to her.
Y/N then finally pulls herself together and gathers back the natural courage she had, trying to match Sam's, "6 pm, tomorrow it is then. I'll pick you up here, Carpenter."
She was the one to pull away and she puts back her signature smile before bidding her farewells to her.
"Good night, Sam. Sweet dreams." Y/N smoothly delivers and starts walking back to where they came from earlier.
Sam then watches her walk away and bites her lip. The view was indeed nice to watch. She then covers her face with both hands before giddily smiling at the ground, thinking about what had just happened. Sam thought it felt like high school all over again. That rush in her veins was quite familiar to her. It's been a while since she had it. All she has to do now is prepare for tomorrow and be sure it's perfect. Y/N, on the other hand, skipped through the streets like a little kid as she smiled widely. Few strangers looked at her funny, but everyone else focused to their own world. The papers she thought she'd be working on tonight would probably be forgotten now that the only thing on her mind is their date tomorrow.
Both women looked forward to it.

Ladies, gentlemen, and interesting people, welcome to...
Tumblr media
The Mackolades are my personal annual film awards, awarded to my favorite (for the most part) movies, performances, and people from all the movies I watched for the first time in 2022, regardless of release year. This is more or less a companion series to Brendan’s Pink Bettes, as most of our movie watching is together. You can see the first and second Mackolades here on my tumblr, now let’s get started on the third!
Tumblr media
FAVORITE DRAMA
WINNER: tick, tick...BOOM! (2021) dir. Lin-Manuel Miranda
FINALISTS:
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) dir. James Cameron
Dramarama (2020) dir. Jonathan Wysocki
Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022) dir. Daniel Scheinert & Daniel Kwan
TÁR (2022) dir. Todd Field
NOMINEES:
The Batman (2022) dir. Matt Reeves
The Godfather (1972) dir. Francis Ford Coppola
Klaus (2019) dir. Sergio Pablos
Pride & Prejudice (2005) dir. Joe Wright
The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) dir. Anthony Minghella
Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022) dir. George Miller
GREAT year for the Favorite Drama category! I knew from the first few minutes of tick, tick...BOOM! that it was winning, but two of the finalists (Dramarama and Everything Everywhere All At Once) gave it a real run for its money. And then TÁR was just impeccable in every way (CATE!!!!!!). Special shoutout to The Godfather for actually living up to the hype and The Batman for being a genuinely good superhero movie. Highly recommend Dramarama in particular to any of my theatre friends that see this.
Tumblr media
FAVORITE HORROR
WINNER: The Menu (2022) dir. Mark Mylod
FINALISTS:
All About Evil (2010) dir. Joshua Grannell (aka Peaches Christ)
Nope (2022) dir. Jordan Peele
Pearl (2022) dir. Ti West
Scream (2022) dir. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett
NOMINEES:
Arachnophobia (1990) dir. Frank Marshall
Barbarian (2022) dir. Zach Cregger
Fresh (2022) dir. Mimi Cave
Hellraiser (2022) dir. David Bruckner
What Keeps You Alive (2018) dir. Colin Minihan
X (2022) dir. Ti West
GREAT year for horror, too! The Menu is such a fun ride, almost more of a dark comedy than horror. I had a lot more actual scares this year than in 2021, particularly in Nope, Scream, Arachnophobia, and Barbarian.
Tumblr media
FAVORITE COMEDY
WINNER: Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar (2021) dir. Josh Greenbaum
FINALISTS:
Do Revenge (2022) dir. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson
Glass Onion (2022) dir. Rian Johnson
Hello, My Name Is Doris (2015) dir. Michael Showalter
Kissing Jessica Stein (2001) dir. Charles Herman-Wurmfeld
NOMINEES:
Burn After Reading (2008) dir. Ethan Coen & Joel Coen
Fire Island (2022) dir. Andrew Ahn
Little Miss Sunshine (2006) dir. Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris
Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris (2022) dir. Anthony Fabian
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) dir. Joel Zwick
See How They Run (2022) dir. Tom George
Hey guess what. It was a great year for comedy, too. Barb & Star is destined to join Romy & Michele and the Tragedy Girls as a pair of gal pals that live in my head for the rest of my life. They’ve had this win sewn up since I first saw the movie in August, but there was still plenty of competition. Do Revenge is probably my unofficial runner up - those twists and turn and goops and gags and outfits!
Tumblr media
FAVORITE SERIES
WINNER: Before Trilogy (3/3)
FINALISTS:
The Godfather (3/3)
Hell House, LLC (2/3)
Wong Kar-wai’s Love Trilogy (3/3)
X/Pearl/Maxxxine (2/3)
God, what can I say that hasn’t already been said about Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy? It’s just two people talking, but it’s perfect!
Tumblr media
THE THANKS! I HATE IT! AWARD
WINNER: Whiplash (2014) dir. Damien Chazelle
FINALIST: Fall (2022) dir. Scott Mann
This new category is for movies that are good, but I hate them anyway! And there’s no movie that quite fits that bill like Whiplash. What an incredible work that I never wanna see again. Or dwell on for long here.
Tumblr media
BIGGEST SURPRISE
WINNER: Halloween Ends (2022) dir. David Gordon Green
FINALISTS:
Brothers (2009) dir. Jim Sheridan
The Invitation (2022) dir. Jessica M. Thompson
Nerve (2016) dir. Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman
Uncle Peckerhead (2020) dir. Matthew John Lawrence
NOMINEES:
Fall (2022) dir. Scott Mann
Hatching (2022) dir. Hanna Bergholm
Hello, My Name Is Doris (2015) dir. Michael Showalter
Kissing Jessica Stein (2001) dir. Charles Herman-Wurmfeld
The Lost City (2022) dir. Adam Nee & Aaron Nee
Valentine (2001) dir. Jamie Blanks
After Halloween Kills won Biggest Letdown at last year’s Mackolades, I went into Halloween Ends with rock bottom expectations, but was pleasantly surprised! From the opening scene it showed it was completely different from any Halloween movie that came before it, and I was mostly delighted by what followed. It’s far from the best Halloween, and has some major problems, but it’s leagues ahead of Kills, and that alone win it Biggest Surprise for me.
Tumblr media
BIGGEST LETDOWN
WINNER: Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness (2022) dir. Sam Raimi
I’ve engaged in a fair bit of MCU hate over the last few years, but I’ve held onto the belief that I’d probably enjoy them if I gave them a chance and just didn’t think too hard about it. Well... I guess I was wrong. I really thought I’d like this, the trailers looked interesting and Sam Raimi has a pretty good track record with me. But yeah... Martin Scorsese was right, these are just flashy theme park rides. Absolutely zero substance worth engaging with. What a disappointment, for me and for general culture. Anyway, somehow this was the only movie I watched in 2022 that I went into with expectations that were significantly let down, and I figured I’d give it its own multiverse of mediocrity with the myriad of posters available.
Tumblr media
FAVORITE LEAD ACTRESS PERFORMANCE
WINNER: Cate Blanchett, TÁR (2022)
FINALISTS:
Mia Goth, Pearl (2022)
Janelle Monae, Glass Onion (2022)
Keke Palmer, Nope (2022)
Michelle Yeoh, Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022)
NOMINEES:
Jessica Chastain, The Eyes of Tammy Faye (2021)
Sally Field, Hello, My Name Is Doris (2015)
Natasha Lyonne, All About Evil (2010)
Lesley Manville, Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris (2022)
Thandiwe Newton, God’s Country (2022)
Anya Taylor-Joy, The Menu (2022)
Okay I have to bullet point this one so I can talk about all the finalists.
Cate is THE performance of the year for me. Her take on Lydia Tár is nothing short of amazing - even from the opening scene, with that TED Talk-like scene where she just talks about music for a few minutes, had Brendan and me grabbing each other and whispering in the (otherwise empty) theater about how breathtaking her performance was. I can’t believe I’m giving her lead actress two years in a row (out of three total!) but she really does deserve it.
Brendan and I loved Mia Goth in 2020′s Emma, but she reached new heights in X and, in particular, Pearl. The monologue! The face journey! The everything else! She’s now on the We’ll See Anything She’s In list, and I can’t wait for MaXXXine.
Janelle! I don’t have as much to say for her, but damn she picks projects well! Incredible lady and fantastic performance(s) in Glass Onion.
Keke - #ReleaseTheSpinCut! What a joy.
Okay I adore Michelle Yeoh and if Cate doesn’t win the Oscar I hope it’s hers. Truly wonderful and deserves everything good that’s coming her way right now.
Tumblr media
FAVORITE SUPPORTING ACTRESS PERFORMANCE
WINNER: Hong Chau, The Menu (2022)
FINALISTS:
Jamie Clayton, Hellraiser (2022)
Courtney Cox, Scream (2022)
Stephanie Hsu, Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022)
Brittany Snow, X (2022)
NOMINEES:
Margaret Cho, Fire Island (2022)
Tovah Feldshuh, Kissing Jessica Stein (2001)
Vanessa Hudgens, tick, tick...BOOM! (2021)
Andrea Martin, My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
Alia Shawkat, Being The Ricardos (2021)
Tandi Wright, Pearl (2022)
Hong Chau is another 2022 addition to the We’ll See Anything She’s In list, and she got an Oscar nom for the other one! Yay! But this is about my favorites, not objectivity, and I prefer her in The Menu. What a treat! I don’t have much to say about the finalists and nominees that wouldn’t require this becoming far too long, so I’m just gonna move on.
Tumblr media
FAVORITE ACTOR PERFORMANCE
WINNER: Paul Dano, Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
FINALISTS:
Marlon Brando, The Godfather (1972)
Austin Butler, Elvis (2022)
Alton Brown, Elvis (2022)
Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022)
NOMINEES:
Rohan Campbell, Halloween Ends (2022)
Ralph Fiennes, The Menu (2022)
Andrew Garfield, tick, tick...BOOM! (2021)
Robin de Jesús, tick, tick...BOOM! (2021)
Haley Joel Osment, Sassy Pants (2012)
Conrad Ricamora, Fire Island (2022)
I started watching Little Miss Sunshine for Toni, but I remember it for Paul, particularly the sequence pictured above. Special shoutout to Alton Brown for stealing the show for a scene or two of Elvis (a difficult task when Austin Butler’s Elvis is present!)
Tumblr media
THE TONI “SHE HAS THE RANGE” COLLETTE AWARD FOR MULTI-GENRE EXCELLENCE
WINNER: Jim Carrey, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)/Sonic The Hedgehog (2020)
FINALISTS:
Jamie Dornan, Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar (2021)/Belfast (2021)
Idris Elba, The Dark Tower (2017)/Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (2022)/Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022)
Jenna Ortega, The Fallout (2021)/Scream (2022)
Tilda Swinton, Burn After Reading (2008)/Constantine (2005)/Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022)
I mean, Jim Carrey was basically born to play Dr. Robotnik, and when you contrast that with Eternal Sunshine, well, that’s basically what this category is for!
Tumblr media
THE CARLY RAE JEPSEN “SHE MAKES MY BLOOD FEEL CARBONATED” AWARD
WINNER: Elaine Stritch, Original Cast Album: Company (1970)
During the Ladies Who Lunch sequence of the Company documentary, I must’ve turned to Brendan at least three times to say “I love being gay” - Elaine’s an icon and a queen and I hate I didn’t get into theatre soon enough to appreciate her while she was alive. (NOTE: If I’d started this category a year earlier, Carol Channing certainly would’ve gotten it for the documentary Larger Than Life, and it felt wrong to not mention that here)
Tumblr media
HOTTEST DADDY
WINNER: Russell Crowe, The Nice Guys (2016)
FINALISTS:
George Clooney, Solaris (2002)
Guillermo Diaz, Bros (2022)
Thomas Forbes-Madison, The Lost City (2022)
David Harbour, Violent Night (2022)
NOMINEES:
Daniel Craig, Glass Onion (2022)
Idris Elba, Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022)
Ethan Hawke, The Black Phone (2022)
Martin Henderson, X (2022)
Peter Sarsgaard, The Batman (2022)
Bradley Whitford, tick, tick...BOOM! (2021)
Someone ask me what kind of guys I like. I dare you. I downloaded six entire movies to get enough usable shots of these men - definitely the most work I did for any single category.
Anyway, that’s the 2022 Mackolades! 65 movies honored (or dishonored) from an eligibility pool of 205. Now you know what I love - any recommendations of what to watch in 2023?

The Gaza genocide showed millions of Americans who really runs the show in Washington
Sep 07, 2024
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken meets with Israel’s Defense Head Yoav Gallant. (Blinken/X)
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, called for a Gaza ceasefire in the early hours after Hamas carried out a major offensive on multiple fronts across Israel.
Blinken posted that he had spoken with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, and “encouraged Türkiye’s advocacy for a cease-fire and the release of all hostages held by Hamas immediately.”
NEVER MISS AN ISSUE OF THE WORLD’S BEST TREND-FORECASTING MAGAZINE
“Pandemonium broke out” across the internet.
Rep. Mike Waltz, R-Fla., posted on X: “The Biden Administration is showing its true colors. Once Israel indicated it was going on offensive in Gaza, Blinken encouraged a cease-fire. Israel has every right to respond to these horrific acts of terror.”
Blinken, himself Jewish, removed the post, and the new message was a statement declaring that Israel has the “right to defend itself, rescue any hostages, and protect its citizens.”
Previously, the State Department’s Office of Palestinian Affairs said on X that it “unequivocally condemned the attack of Hamas terrorists and the loss of life that has incurred. We urge all sides to refrain from violence and retaliatory attacks. Terror and violence solve nothing.”
That comment was also deleted and replaced with a more militant post stating that the U.S. “unequivocally” condemns the attack.
The New Republic noted that it was strange that the Biden State Department would allow Republican pressure to dictate its approach to the conflict.
“The State Department flip-flopping on a ceasefire is confusing at best,” the magazine wrote. “The agency’s entire job is to promote diplomacy, so surely its ultimate goal should be an end to all fighting. Instead, it is letting right-wing backlash determine its next moves.”
The Trends Journal compiled a brief summary of the Biden administration’s approach to Gaza and how it manipulated the word “ceasefire” for its own political advantage.
21 OCTOBER: Artists4Ceasefire called on the U.S. government to push for a ceasefire in Gaza. NPR reported that the list of celebrities included: Cate Blanchett, America Ferrera, Bassem Youssef, Jon Stewart, Dua Lipa, Hasan Minhaj, Oscar Isaac and Michael Stipe.
On 12 October, celebrities like Gal Gadot, Michael Douglas, and Jerry Seinfeld, signed an open letter supporting Israel, the report noted.
The Biden administration’s position was to provide “unwavering U.S. support for Israel.”
25 OCTOBER: Al Jazeera reported that the U.S. was “firmly resisting” calls for a ceasefire in Gaza, and U.S. President Joe Biden vowed to provide Israel with all the weapons it needs.
29 OCTOBER: Pope Francis said he is praying for a ceasefire.

'Videos of Fleabag actors Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Andrew Scott enjoying Taylor Swift’s concert in London over the weekend are being shared far and wide.
However, there’s one clip in particular that’s really caught people’s attention.
The former co-stars were among the numerous celebrities spotted at Taylor’s first London dates on her ongoing Eras tour, with Paul McCartney, Tom Cruise, Cate Blanchett, Nicola Coughlan, Zawe Ashton, Hugh Grant, Keir Starmer and even Prince William also in the audience of the sold-out shows.
Footage taken from Sunday night’s gig shows Andrew and Phoebe enjoying themselves in the VIP tent during Taylor’s rendition of Love Story, with the Indiana Jones star seen enthusiastically waving her hands in the air and dancing to the song.
Our favourite clip from the night, though, came when Andrew and Phoebe apparently thought they’d pop to the bar before the 1989 section – only to be greeted by those iconic opening bars of Style.
And what happened next was extremely relatable, with the clip already racking up half a million views on X (formerly Twitter)…
Later in the set, the duo were also seen dancing to Taylor’s performance of Shake It Off.
Last month, Andrew spoke about his friendship with the 14-time Grammy winner, following the release of her latest album The Tortured Poets Department.
“Taylor’s new album is sensational! I texted her yesterday to say how amazing it is,” he said. “I think she is just a force of nature, just an extraordinary human, and this album is really, really amazing.”
Interestingly, when Taylor first announced the name of her most recent album, many fans thought it could have been inspired by a group chat that her ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn was in with both Andrew and Paul Mescal.'

Winter Is Coming And Marvel Comics Is Preparing For It With Avengers
The December solicits are out and about. Marvel is bringing back Phoenix to keep us all warm, courtesy of their newly-exclusive hire Matthew Rosenberg
Tumblr media
, joiningDonny Cates
 at upcoming Marvel Writers Retreats.
There has been a lot of worry about Marvel of late, as people have seen sales slide away, an ever reliance on marketing gimmicks and a lack of taking any kind of initiative that sticks.
In 2002 the now-CCO-of-Marvel-but-Editor-In-Chief, Joe Quesada
, held an interview with the New York Observer . It is the kind of interview that could not happen today without the internet burning down in a blaze of outrageIt was this published exchange that saw Paul Levitz
appeal to Marvel executives to fire Quesada. So offended were DC Comics higher-ups that it stopped any co-operation between the two publishers over any project, specifically until both Joe Quesada and his then-boss Bill Jemas
were fired. They only got the latter.
However these days it could be argued that Marvel Comics have X-Men, Spider-Man, The Avengers – and don’t know what to do with them. Sales in store see their titles regularly beaten by Nightwing and the Flash, not just Batman and Superman. Sales of regular Marvel titles have slip-slid away. Maybe they should call themselves Disney Comics?

strangest night of our lives {Joe Mazzello/OC}
Summary: Cate’s 10 year high school reunion is coming up and Joe agrees to go with her, except that she had a garbage time at high school, and the idea of seeing those people again stresses her out more than she cares to admit.
A/N: 5354 words. Self indulgent cate/joe fic that is neither of the things i promised. i write this shit to make myself happy because there’s v few people who actually care lmao ANYWAYS enjoy (thanks, i will) no smut, but i put it under a readmore because it’s a long one.
Cate doesn’t get stressed, it’s one of the great things about the Taylor family, Joe had found, they’re very loud but very chill, they each had their own outlets for rage and stress; Barney boxed, Astrid worked in her garage and drank whiskey like it was her job, and Cate had her music and her daughter. So, to say it was strange to see Cate frantically pacing back and forth beside the craft services table liked a caged lion, phone to her ear, frown adorning her brow, was an understatement.
“Rowan, this is import-” whoever’s on the other end of the line cuts her off and she stops pacing, squeezing her eyes shut and sighing deeply, “I get that that’s important too- listen to me - if I find someone else to go with, will you look after Claud?” There’s a long pause and Cate finds herself nodding along, “yes, I know she’d love to come with you, she loves playing with the sound desk-” another beat and her eyes snap open, exasperation written all over her face, “well then you tell her to stop playing with the faders, I can’t astral project myself to-”
Joe’s fidgeting now, feels like he’s intruding on a private moment, and when Cate finally spots him, finally meets his gaze where he’d stopped on his way to grab some food between takes, her smile is tight.
“I’ll drop Claud off on Thursday, okay?” She says into the receiver, gentler this time, and there seems to be something akin to relief flowing through her as the tense set of her shoulders eases a little, “okay, take care, bye.” And she hangs up, sighing heavily. Scrolling through her phone with one hand, the other reaches out to take one of the egg and lettuce sandwiches being offered on the table beside her, and Joe feels less like he’s intruding.
“Everything alright?” He asks tentatively, and Cate grunts around her sandwich, before finishing her mouthful and heaving yet another sigh, her third in what feels like less than a minute.
“Everything’s fine, just had all my plans for this weekend completely fucked,” she turned off her phone and slid it into the back pocket of her jeans, putting down the sandwich and opening up a bottle of water, downing a third in a few quick gulps.
“It’s Tuesday.” Joe frowned.
“Yeah, and I’ve had these plans for almost a month; just like Rowan to fuckin’ screw all this up,” she grumbled. This came as a shock to Joe, who’d never heard of her ever speaking ill of anyone; everyone in her family, Cate had always been equal parts the rowdiest, and the most sincerely kind, whoever Rowan was, they must have really screwed up.
“And Rowan is…?” Joe prompts, and the tension in Cate’s shoulders cracks a little.
“Claud’s dad; my ex,” oh, “he was meant to come with me to this high school reunion thing this week but he’s - surprise - found out he’s working.” She rolls her eyes. She looks tired, which is, again, an uncommon look for her, and she pulls out her phone. “You wouldn't happen to know someone willing to spend the weekend in London putting up with me and and a bunch of asshole private school grads for a weekend-” And Joe's about to make a suggestion, but she keeps talking, still looking through her phone, “you know, Barn would go if I begged him, but fuck it'd be pathetic to turn up to my high school reunion with a brother who's objectively more successful than me, and Trid has been banned from all further reunions last time I heard-”
“Wait, why?” Joe frowns, half laughing, and Cate grins.
“At her reunion she ended up hooking up with the biology teacher she had a crush on in her final year, and it was a big scandal because when you go to a terribly fancy private school, everything's a scandal-”
“I'm free this weekend.” Joe finally interrupts her, and Cate's mouth snaps shut and she turns slowly to him.
“I- no, dude, no, you're busy as shit, don’t- no.” Cate's shaking her head, finishing off the last of her sandwich, and washing it down with another gulp of water, trying to ignore the way her cheeks are heating up at the suggestion, “Dude, you don't need to do that.”
“Wow, alright I get it, I get it,” Joe laughs, though it's a little off, he actually seems a little hurt by such a thorough rejection, and Cate's ears turn pink as she finally turns to him.
“No, I just mean - like it's a lovely offer, but I don't want to be a burden and I'm sure you have better things to do with your time, I can find -” she's floundering, flustered, fidgeting with her phone, and this time when Joe laughs, it's genuine.
“Cate, seriously, we're-” he hesitates slightly, “friends, and all I was gonna do this weekend anyway was lay around in my hotel room and maybe practice the bass for a bit,” he says, and Cate's eyes glaze over a bit.
“God that sounds nice,” she murmurs under her breath, and in that one moment, she looks so tired.
“Come on, let me tag along, it'll be a nice change of scenery.”
“You sure?” She asks tentatively. Joe nods, clapping her on the shoulder.
“It'll be fun; we'll make it fun.” He assured her. For just a moment, there’s an unfiltered look of relief that washes over Cate’s face before she throws herself at Joe, wrapping him up in a hug.
“Oh thank God, I really didn’t want to ask my brother to come with me.” She laughs gently, hugging him tighter than was probably necessary, though to be fair, Joe wasn’t even close to complaining as he hugged her back.
They meet on Friday, the day before the reunion, at the hotel in the middle of London where it was taking place according to Cate, and the moment Joe steps into the lobby and sees her wearing her black jeans and leather jacket, draped on a gilded sofa that wouldn’t have been out of place in Garden Lodge, that he realises what type of people she must have gone to school with, and how absolutely ‘fuck-off-wealthy’ that makes her family; he’s actually a little humbled. He’s also never been so grateful to see someone so out of place as Cate. in that moment.
She’s twitchy, fidgety in the uncomfortably fancy elevator ride to their floor, carrying a black duffle bag and a garment bag on a coat hanger.
“Seriously, you can run away now, I’m not going to stop you,” she offered quickly before the elevator doors open, and she can’t bring herself to look at him. Joe’s got his own suit in a garment bag slung over his shoulder, and he can feel the nervous energy radiating off her in waves almost. The doors open.
“Not going anywhere,” he chanced her a look, a half smile, but she just looks doubtful, and steps out ahead of him, “what’s got you so worried?” He asks, and Cate visibly sighs. It’s so strange to see her like this, she’s usually so bright and outgoing, seeing her tense and nervous is almost uncomfortable to witness, and if he wants to help her try and relax, Joe knows he needs to find out why she’s so tense in the first place.
“High school didn’t agree with me,” Cate says, glancing at the numbers on the doors as they walk past, slowing down in front of 2318. She opens it with the key card and when they step in, she moves about the luxurious spacious room with an almost practiced ease, hanging up her garment bag and pulling off her shoes, “it’s a school for trust-fund babies who have more money than sense and aspire to be bigger, richer jags than their parents, or trophy wives, or both.” She flops back on the bed, gazing up at the roof as Joe takes his time putting his things away before moving to the window.
“So are we trying to mess with them or are we trying to get on their good side?” He asks, and when Cate laughs, he can’t help but grin in return, looking from the spectacular London skyline to her, smiling for the first time since he’d arrived.
“I’d tar and feather them if given half a chance, but honestly I’m just out here trying to rub it in their stupid faces that I actually amounted to something.”
“High school really wasn’t kind to you,” Joe winced, and she gave him a wry smile, but doesn’t disagree. It’s when she sits up, suggests getting dinner, that something clicks in Joe’s head and he hesitates before he answers her; “yes on dinner, but there’s- uh,” he can see Cate’s a little amused by the way he’s turning faintly pink, but it’s her turn to get a little flustered as he voices his next thought; “where will I be sleeping?”
The bed was enormous, could easily fit two people, could probably easily fit at least four, but the last thing Joe wanted to do was make her uncomfortable when she was already so stressed about the upcoming reunion.
“I- here, Joe,” she makes a face like she doesn’t quite understand why he’s asking, patting the bed, while her voice is so painfully casual it almost stings, “we’re adults, dude.” And with that she breaks away, scrambles across the bed to the bedside table where a menu was waiting by the phone. “Room service?”
They eat their room service dinner in bed, and Cate does her best to catch Joe up on any gossip that may be important knowledge for him to have before he ‘walks into the hornet’s nest’ as Cate put it.
“I’m pretty sure that’s not the saying,” Joe snickers, but Cate waves him off, mouth full of pork chop.
“Whatever, dude, the point is, these are the kids of bankers and lawyers and fancy athletes and stuff like that; they’re exactly like their parents, just as awful as they were in high school, at least according to their facebooks, and none of them like me.” She picks at the salad at the side of her plate before eating a cherry tomato and avoiding Joe’s gaze.
“Are- really? How can you know that?” He asks, tone light, mostly convinced she’s joking, but she shrugged.
“When I clicked that I was coming on the event, I was added to a group chat for it that it turns out most of the rest of the year was already in, apart from like the, you know, the ‘weird kids’, the kids they assumed weren’t coming.” The mood is quickly dropping, and Cate takes a deep breath, forcing a smile. There’s a beat of time in which Cate’s smile is already slipping, and Joe sort of wants to ask why she’s even going, but then all he can think about is how good it would feel to rub Cate’s success in the faces of those assholes, and he gets it. He leans in conspiratorially.
“You wanna go egg their cars?” He asks with a grin, and there’s an indescribably relief and amusement written all over Cate’s face that just lights up the room, and Joe just wants to be able to bottle that emotion so he never forgets how damn happy her smile makes him. He’s sort of been thinking that a lot lately, if he’s being honest, but he tries not to think about it to hard; he’s not here to worry about himself, he’s here to support Cate.
“Literally nothing would bring me more joy,” Cate sighs wistfully before shaking her head, “but I’m trying to be the bigger person.” And there’s a moment where Joe can’t help but marvel at her; if what she’s said is true about these people, she has every right to be the pettiest person in the world, but she’s trying to rise above it, trying to put it behind her.
“I’m glad you’re here.” Cate admits, snapping Joe out of his thoughts, and she moves her mostly empty plate onto the table and flops back on the bed, staring up at the ceiling again, “seriously, I owe you.” Joe puts his own mostly empty plate beside hers, joining her, taking her hand and giving it a reassuring squeeze.
“No you don’t, there was no way I’d let you go to this alone.” He assures, and Cate is strangely quiet, her hand still clasped in his. When he looks at her, he’s surprised to see her looking back at him, expression a little unreadable, a little awed, and she looks like she wants to say something, but when his gaze meets hers, it’s as if he can see her hesitate, and she just gives him a soft smile.
“I appreciate it.” Is all she says, voice uncharacteristically soft.
It’s much later that night that Joe learns that Cate sleeps on her side, curled up, with blankets all tucked up around her, doing things on her phone until well past midnight.
[go to sleep] Joe messages at about twenty past twelve, grinning to himself. He hears Cate’s message tone go off and he suppresses a little giggle, but is surprised to hear Cate herself snicker, though she doesn’t turn around. After a beat, he hears start typing.
[u first.] [hypocryte.] [*hypocrite] She sends in rapid succession, and Joe doesn’t even try and hide his soft laughter at this.
[not tired]
[neither am i] She’s quick to respond, and she shifts to get more comfortable on the bed.
[guess we’re at an impasse] He sends, and there’s a long moment of silence before she slowly starts typing out a response.
[that spelling doesn’t look right.....] [impass] [impasse] He hears her make a little, thoughtful huff, and there’s a long pause before she starts typing again. [no you’re right]
[i know 😂] He’s shifted from where he was leaning on his headboard to laying on his side facing away from her, and the with the two of them both engrossed by the other’s messages on their phones, in the middle of the night, in the same damn bed, it feels like a high school rom-com. It makes Joe feel a little giddy, a little warm inside like he doesn’t quite want to admit.
They get donuts from Seven-Eleven at one in the morning at Cate’s behest, and she admits it was her favourite part of high school. Sitting at the bus stop outside the store, Cate takes only the barest moment to lament her lost youth around bites of donut, but quickly thinks better of it.
“I eat better because of Claud, I gotta set a good example, you know?” She’s sitting probably too close, leaning against him, but he’s not complaining. The night is cool enough that they’re both wearing jackets, but it’s otherwise calm, even in the inner city. “I want her to be healthy and strong, and yeah like I’m not a hardass, like I’m not a hypocrite, you know,” and she takes another bite, before taking a swig of the milk she’d bought to pair with it. Joe is quiet, just looking out at the street, unable to help the fond smile that was caught at the edge of his lips, “but I miss like, being on tour with dad, god we’d eat absolute garbage after the gigs had finished. Whatever was open late was dinner; there was like a week in Japan when I was sixteen, where I just survived on dessert crepes.”
It’s little moments like that, where she says a lot without saying much at all, how she’d been afforded indulgences, perhaps at the expense other parts of her life. He asks if it was in the school holidays; it wasn’t. She goes quiet. She leans her head on his shoulder and eats another donut, and they watch the cars pass by in easy silence.
This time when they get ready for bed, Cate plugs her phone in to charge and puts it on the bedside table, ready to actually sleep, and Joe finds himself doing the same.
The space between them on the luxurious bed feels like miles, feels too far away. There’s a beat of hesitation before Joe turns, wants to say something, wants to reach out, but Cate is already facing him, arm outstretched, surprise written all over her face, and though he can’t see it in the darkness, she’s quickly turning red.
“Hey,” her voice is soft, a little nervous, and she retracts her hand quickly, but doesn’t turn away, doesn’t look away, just smiles, a little bashful.
“Hey,” Joe can’t help but grin back.
“This bed is huge,” she laughs a little in the darkness, and Joe hums in agreement, and then she’s shuffling over, propping herself up, “hey I- contact makes me less nervous, would you mind if I?” There’s a little bit of reservation in her voice, like she’s not sure how he will react as she holds her hand out to him, going to lay down beside him, but something in Joe’s heart softens and he huffs out a laugh.
“Come here,” and he opens his arms for her. Even in the darkness, he can see her visibly relax as she rests her head gently on his chest, arms tucked carefully to her chest as he wraps an arm around her shoulders. It’s all very tentative, like they’re both hesitant to get to close, but her shampoo smells like something fruity and she’s surprisingly cool to the touch and something about holding her, even gingerly like this, fills him with some sort of contentment. “You have nothing to be nervous about, you know; you’re gonna make this reunion your bitch.”
Cate is quiet, but he feels when she tenses at his words. It lasts only the barest moment before she relaxes, and shifts against him, uncurling one of her arms to drape across him and pull him a little closer. He holds her a little tighter.
Joe wakes first, on his side, one arm beneath his head and his pillow, the other slung over Cate, who’s also facing him where she’s sleeping on her side. One of her hands is curled loosely in the fabric of his shirt, and when he moves to get up, her grip on his shirt tightens just a little and she makes an unhappy noise in her sleep. Joe considers his options for a moment, before shrugging and settling in to go back to sleep, at least for a little while longer.
Cate’s in the shower when he wakes up, and she stays there for a full half an hour before he calls out asking if she’s okay. He gets a tentative and unconvincing ‘yes’. Not five minutes later, the water shuts off and Cate comes barrelling out clad in a bathrobe and her hair dripping onto the carpet.
“This was all a mistake; I should go home.” She announces, sitting at the edge of the bed. Joe, still in his pyjamas, having not left bed at this stage, frowns as he sits up. “They don’t want to see me.” She says softly, voice so raw, and Joe’s heart breaks for her, just a little.
“Absolutely not, you’re successful as hell, you’re a kind person, and an incredible mother,” and he wants to add something else, to wrap it up, something about being better than any of them could even hope to, but Cate looks at him and there’s something in her expression, the same thing he saw last night that was unreadable, followed again by a hesitation and a smile.
“You’re too nice,” she brushes off the compliments easily and Joe sighs, rolling his eyes.
“You’re just nervous.”
By the time Joe’s gotten out of the shower, Cate’s got her hair wrapped up in a towel and is frantically chattering away to someone on a video call. There’s a small fortune’s worth of makeup scattered on the bed, and she’s rifling through it with something akin to nervous irritation.
“Mickey, I don’t know what the shit a cut crease is or how to do it,” Cate sighs, and the person on the other end of a video call, dark haired and exasperated, pinches the bridge of their nose.
“That’s why I’m here, don’t worry.”
Mickey turns out to be Cate’s brother’s partner, professional makeup artist and part-time Taylor-Sibling wrangler so it seems, judging by their endless patience and exasperation. It’s a little awe inspiring, Joe thinks as he watches quietly, moving about the room, ordering lunch, passing makeup brushes and pallets when asked to.
“How’s this look?” Cate turns to him once she’s finished putting a pretty impressive wing on her eyeliner. The rest of her eyeshadow is in shades of rich, blood red and shimmering pink, but Joe doesn’t have time to answer before her gaze catches on the bowl of wedges he’s got sitting between them that had arrived not long ago, though Cate had been so immersed in her work that she hadn’t noticed.
“It looks lovely,” Joe assures her, and her thanks is spoken around where she’s crammed three wedges into her mouth.
“You’re a menace,” Mickey informs her.
“I’m hungry!” Cate protests, mouth still full of food, and there comes a secondary voice from Mickey’s end; it’s Barney, asking what she’d done this time.
“Speaking with her mouth full,” Mickey sighed, looking incredibly put upon as they moved from where they’d presumably been sitting to join Barney on what looked to be a sofa, the two of them in frame as Cate flipped them off.
“Watch it, grub,” Barney warned, and Cate made a horribly gross noise as she opened her mouth wide and showed all her half chewed food. Even Joe, though he was amused, made a noise of disgust at that.
“Wait, who’s that? ‘that Rowan?” Barney asked, frowning through the screen, and Cate made another face, shaking her head as she swallowed her food. Joe takes that as his moment to make an entrance, maneuvering about the makeup on the bed to sit by Cate, popping into frame and resting his chin on her shoulder. Seeing who it actually was, Barney’s face lit up.
It was strange to wrap his head around at times, the idea that the Taylor family all collectively seemed to like him. It wasn’t something he’d expected; apart from Undrafted, he had never found himself close to the, for lack of a better word, source material for a film. Roger himself, and Astrid to an extent, were probably the most distant, but he half-jokingly calls Ash ‘mom’ on set, and Cate and Barney are always there, Barney because he’s in between projects and helping out Ash, and Cate because-
“Hey,” Joe’s frowning, looking in the mirror as he does up the buttons of his dress shirt, while Cate’s in the bathroom curling her hair, “I never actually asked what you do.” The video call had ended almost half an hour ago, and by now they were both a little antsy, getting ready in different parts of the room.
“What do you mean?” Cate calls back, tone blithe, followed by a yelped swear.
“You okay?”
“Burnt myself on the curling iron, I’m fine.” She assures quickly, and Joe goes back to the question at hand.
“Like, for a living, or study, or, I don’t-”
“I’m Queen’s social media coordinator.” She says it likes it’s the most obvious thing in the world, cutting him off before he can even finish his thought. In the silence that follows, Joe makes a noise of interest, though it’s clear he wasn’t expecting it. “It’s not-” Cate hesitates for a moment, and once more Joe hears her sigh, “okay, it’s almost definitely nepotism, I get that, I’m not blind-”
“I didn’t-”
“No, not you,” Cate gives a humourless laugh. “I know how it looks from the outside, but I do have a Masters in Public Relations.” The fact hangs in the air for a moment as Joe takes the time to process it, before his frown deepens, and he’s moving through the hotel room with ease to find her standing in the bathroom. She’s frowning at herself in the mirror, though it’s closer to scowling, and even when she catches sight of Joe in the reflection, her expression doesn’t change.
“And you’re worried about tonight? Cate, seriously-”
“Stop it, stop being so fucking nice, okay?" She snaps. Joe physically recoils, eyebrows raising in surprise as he watches her turn on him. It’s as if the air itself is crackling with the hostile energy she’s radiating, tense and angry, though he’s not sure what he’s done to warrant it. “You don’t have to pity me or whatever, I got practically everything handed to me, I get it.”
Its in this moment that Joe sees the way she’s not really looking at him, the way she’s looking through him and projecting her old fears and frustrations on him, and he gives her a thin, understanding smile.
“I think you need some time to get ready,” he says softly. There’s a beat before her expression shifts, cracks and falls, and she turns back to the mirror, nodding quietly and picking up the curling iron again. He leaves the hotel room, sits in the lobby and rests his head against the wall for a very long time.
[Hey Ma Rocket, I need some advice about Cate.] He deletes the text before he even sends it, has no idea what to ask or how to ask it, thinks that he might be overstepping his bounds to go to her mother about this. Something about this whole event has Cate acting so out of character to him that it’s jarring; Roger and Ash have told a few stories about her high school days and early days of uni, and this, whatever this version of Cate is, seems to best align with those.
[hey so i think cate’s mad but not mad at me but im not sure] Instead, he talks to Barney, who only waits half a minute before just ringing Joe.
“I told her it was a terrible idea to go to this reunion. She gets so shitty about high school.” Barney sighs, so blase that it’s almost committal as he forgoes a greeting.
Though he doesn’t go into details, from what Barney does say, it’s clear that ‘high school didn’t agree with her’ didn’t even begin to cover it. More than anything, Joe’s heart just aches for her; she was a kid. He wants to go to her, let her know that it’s okay, wrap her up in a hug and keep her away from the assholes who convinced her that she’d never be able to earn anything in her life.
“Mumma, you look like a princess!”
When Joe gets back to the hotel room, the first thing he hears is Claud, and without even taking a step over the threshold, there’s a relief that washes over him as he hear’s Cate’s laugh.
“I feel like a princess, sweetie,” Cate’s smile is clear in her words, and as Joe closes the door behind him, Cate looks over and gives him a soft, apologetic smile from where she’s sitting back on the bed, still wearing her bathrobe, holding up her phone, “are you having fun at daddy’s work?”
“It’s loud,” Claud says, and Cate beckons Joe over with a smile, “but sometimes I can push the things and,” the little girl giggled, “sometimes I push them when he’s not looking-”
“Claudia,” Cate says, her voice taking on a surprisingly Scottish lilt as she gently reprimands her daughter, sounding so much like her mother it’s a little hilarious, “what’s dad told you about playing with the faders when he’s not looking?”
Claud is sulking by the time Joe is sitting beside Cate on the bed, and the moment she spots him, her whole face brightens into a grin.
“Joseph!” It’s always amused him how the little girl would always insist on calling him by his fugll first name, and he’d always respond in kind as it made her smile. Cate grew quiet, content watching Joe and Claud talk and joke around, leaning against him as she held up the phone; she seemed far more at ease than she had for most of the past twenty-four hours, and for that Joe was grateful.
“You okay?” He asks softy once they hang up. Cate hums and nods, taking a deep, slow breath, centering herself in the moment.
“I don’t wanna go to the reunion.” She finally admits, and Joe wraps an arm around her shoulders. “I don’t have to prove myself to anyone, and-” she pauses for a moment, looking up at him, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have yelled at you, I’m actually really glad you’re here.”
“There’s nowhere I’d rather be,” he gives her a warm, fond smile, and she looks for the barest moment like she’s going to brush it off, but it hits her how sincere he is and something in her chest tightens.
“You’re too nice to me.” But it’s not dismissive this time, it’s soft, it’s that same unreadable something that Joe had seen on her face last night, and she’s smiling back at him. “You actually like me as a person, don’t you?” She sounds so bewildered at the concept, searching his face for some hint of a dissenting opinion, but he just frowns in confusion.
“Of course, you’re awesome, Cate.”
Her answering smile is blinding. It’s as if she’s found a whole new energy, jumping from the bed and tugging Joe to his feet.
“Let’s do whatever; ditch this shitshow reunion and just-” she laughs a little, throwing open the closet, “I don’t know; let’s do anything, everything.”
“In a suit?” Joe asks, a little hesitant, but still smiling. Cate pulls out her garment bag and opens it, revealing an exquisite, red, cocktail dress.
“We’ll paint the town red,” she enthuses, before she falters for a minute, expression falling slightly, “I mean, if you want to, don’t feel obliged or -”
“Oh, I’m always down for an adventure; it’s Saturday, baby, let’s tear it up away from these,” he pauses for a moment, grinning, “what did you call them, jags and trophy wives?”
Cate is elated as she swans over to the bathroom to get changed, and Joe pulls on his suit jacket, tying his bowtie when Cate throws open the bathroom door and strikes a pose in her dress.
“You look pretty damn good,” Joe grins, trying not to let it show how the sight of her had left him a little out of breath. Cate’s grinning and laughing, making her way over to him, nudging his hands out of the way to fix his bowtie.
“Same to you; cute penguin suit,” voice dropping to soft and amused, Cate’s eyes were fixed on her tying efforts as she continued, growing more serious, “I am really sorry I yelled at you, I- this whole thing had me fucked up and I got in my own head about it, and about how fucking hard it is being the bigger person this weekend, and I just thought-”
He gently places his hands on her shoulders and Cate freezes, words dying in her throat as she looks up at him with her big, surprised eyes.
“You worry too much.”
“I have to, I’m a mum.” Her voice is quiet as she says it, expression softening to a smile that he returns easily.
“Not tonight; Claud’s safe and happy, you don’t need to worry about her. We’re going to go out and kick some ass, or egg some cars, or maybe we just catch some live bands, but Cate?” And she nods in acknowledgement, half amused, “It’s gonna be fun; we’re gonna make it fun. I promise.”
With that, she bounces up onto her toes and kisses him like it’s most natural thing in the world, and he kisses her back, smiling against her lips. Her grip on his bowtie loosens and in a oment she’s got her arms wrapped around his neck, and he’s holding her close, pulling her to him, lifting her up just a little. With a soft laugh, she breaks the kiss, holding him tighter until he puts her down again, though they don’t let go of one another.
“I’m so fucking glad you’re here.”

“You’re really going to make me do this, buttercup?”
“You lost the bet, and you promised you’d do anything I asked.”
Tumblr media
*A few days earlier*
You were texting with your best friend:
Cate: “Babe! Look what I found!”
Tumblr media
You: “OMG! Why did you send me that?!”
Cate: “For your husband, silly!”
You: “You really think Lucas would ever wear those?”
Cate: “Make him. You have to. It’s your Christmas present from me. Love you, see ya!”
You: “CATE!”
You threw your phone on the coffee table. Planning your sweet revenge on your husband, after the near heart attack he gave you when he came home early from his tour. You had been happily surprised until he told you he had invited some army buddies to stay with you for a few weeks. Mood ruined.
You had told Cate that you were plotting revenge, and this was her contribution. Some very sexy Christmas themed men's underwear. You opened your laptop and started plotting.
Tumblr media
*The day before*
Your dear husband lost a bet. A big one. You had bet that you could hold him down in a fight. What he hadn’t expected was your plan of attack. You had started unbuttoning your shirt, showing him the white lacey bra underneath. He had been stumped, and then you had pummeled him to the ground.
“You, my darling wife, cheated. You exploited my greatest weakness,” he grumbled as you sat on his back with his hands crossed in front of you.
“I never said that it was going to be a fair fight, my love.”
He was insulted by your dirty trick, but after a few kisses and promises of a good time, he was game on whatever you had in mind for him.
Tumblr media
*Present day*
“Fine, I’ll do it. Put on some music so I can get in the mood.”
You had just told him about what his punishment was for losing the bet. Putting on three sets of men’s underwear. For the first two he had to model them for you and for the last one, he would do a striptease.
His face had been priceless. Mouth opening into a perfect O-shape, eyes widened to the size of teacups. The look of sheer panic made your heart soar with glee, usually, your husband was afraid of nothing but this might be it.
Lucas Syverson took the packages and with a defeated look he went into your bedroom to change. You had guilt-tripped him into doing this, having had fake crocodile tears in your eyes, as you told him you had hoped to start your baby-making process when he had come home with three soldiers, offering them the guest rooms. You knew that Sy couldn’t handle it if you started crying. He would do anything for you to stop the tears. You did feel a little guilty about having to force this on him, but you had a surprise in store for him when it was over.
“Cue the music!” He told you after a few minutes.
You giggled and started the runway music you had chosen. Syverson walked in wearing a pair of green boxers with three Christmas bulbs on them and the text ‘Well hung’, which fitted your husband so well.
Tumblr media
You burst out laughing. He strutted his well-rounded ass in front of you. Twerking those steely buns, making you laugh so hard the sofa was shaking.
He walked away and came back in the next pair of underwear you had bought for him. A pair of white briefs with a black outlining and text saying: ‘Kiss me under the mistletoe’.
Tumblr media
His steps were confident as he sat in your lap, jiggling his ass to your crotch. You slapped his left ass cheek, making him yelp. He gave you a side glance before he trapped you between his thick thighs. He moved his hips sensually, filling your mind with 50 shades of filthy thoughts. He leaned in to whisper in your ear.
“I can smell your arousal, sunshine,” he licked the shell of your ear and gently bit your earlobe. You gasped, clutching at his muscular upper arms, trying to ground yourself, as you felt the jolt of pleasure below your navel.
“Baby, you still need to try on one more…” you moaned. He chuckled and removed himself from you.
“Put Joe Cocker on, when I come back,” he called from the bedroom.
“You can’t be serious, babygirl!” You heard him yell, his voice sounded high-pitched and stunned. He came out in a pair of jeans, his favourite Metallica T-shirt, and a Santa hat. Leaning against the door frame, he ran his thumb across his perfectly sculpted lips. You knew you were in deep trouble.
On cue with the music, he started moving his hips. Slowly moving side to side to the beat of the song ‘You can leave your hat on’.
He grabbed the hem of his shirt and teasingly moved it further up, revealing his taut abs. You bit your lip in anticipation. Sy had a wicked smile on his face when he removed the shirt, swung it around his head and threw it right in your face.
You giggled hard, watching him unbutton his jeans. He took his sweet time pulling the zipper down. The brown straps on his shoulders were going straight down his jeans. The languid pace he was dancing was torture for you. Lucas turned his back to you, pushing his jeans down so his ass was exposed to your very hungry eyes. He moved around, making you come face to… snout, with the reindeer mankini you had bought for him.
Tumblr media
The snort that exploded from your mouth was contagious for Sy, he laughed while removing his jeans all the way. He stood in front of you in nothing but the mankini, a thin string was nestled between his ass cheeks.
“These are so uncomfortable,” he snickered and stretched out the bands on his shoulder, making him hiss as the string in his ass gave him a wedgie.
“Then remove them, darling,” you howled with laughter.
“Am I to be naked alone?”
You shook your head and stood. You grabbed his hands, telling him with your lust-filled eyes to help you remove your articles of clothing. His big hands palmed your breast, giving them a little squeeze before he loosed the knot in your sweatpants, which fell into a heap on top of your naked feet. While you peeled the mankini off your husband, he slowly, languidly lifted your jumper and revealed that you were only wearing a pair of black panties with pink writing: ‘It’s not gonna lick itself’.
Tumblr media
Sy had a devilish grin on his face. His long fingers tracing the letters, give you a featherlight touch on your already sensitive flesh above the panty-line.
He made you sit down and covered you with his broad body. You palmed his bearded cheeks, forcing his face down so you could kiss his plump lips.
“Get to work, captain,” you commanded and pushed his Santa-clad head down towards your waiting aching lady garden of sexual desire.
“Yes ma’am,” he said in a deep husky voice that sent chills down your spine, and then he went to work.
