Doing my part to help fix the deficit in Kayabeth fanart with a Star Trek AU (set in the SNW era as I feel like that's the Star Trek with the most similar energy to Elsbeth) featuring a now-canonically-newly-minted-detective as a newly-minted Lieutenant Junior Grade (I hope I got the insignia right) and as best as I could make with the limited civilian clothing options on the Meiker I used to an appropriately funky outfit (though I've seen canon civilian clothing from Star Trek that her canon outfits aren't too far from) for a certain outside-observer-y-consultant-y chick sent over from HQ to the [whatever the starship in this AU would be called, have some ideas but I'm afraid a canon ship already took them] to investigate a supposedly-corrupt captain who turned out to be being framed by his first officer and liking the ship and crew (especially a certain then-ensign assigned to "babysit" her) enough to stick around

solution someone on Reddit brought up to the whole Kayabeth partner dilemma (as when their relationship has been basically described as the heart of the show by actual people working on the show and Kaya's actress is literally billed right after Elsbeth's in the opening credits they can't just have her leave) that I'm surprised I didn't think of; since Elsbeth has gone far beyond her original observational capacity of the consent decree and given what she's done for them and how well she's done it, why can't girl just get a freaking badge?
This wouldn't necessarily have to mean she'd have to go through all the rigamarole and years of actually "The-Rookie"-ing her way up to being the detective many people at "her" crime scenes have mistaken her for, maybe this is just another case where Kaya and Elsbeth end up paralleling Adam and Morgan from High Potential as Morgan despite being a consultant was able to still get an official-y badge and there was a whole episode about how she's as much his partner as the now-an-FBI-agent guy was. So perhaps since Elsbeth's show seems *crosses fingers* likely to stick to the airwaves for a while and they can't just keep having some notice of the extension of her consent decree every season premiere, perhaps she could just get the kind of permanent consultant-y position (the equivalent of what Morgan has) that I thought she was going to get at the end of S1 when the captain talked about a permanent position for her and truly establish that she's found a new home in New York.

In case anyone ever wants to write a Soulmate AU for Kayabeth I found the perfect variation of it to fit their vibe
The one where whenever you're listening to music, your soulmate hears it stuck in their head. Think about it...

Reminds me of things people need to keep in mind regarding Elsbeth the show and how just because of how this most recent episode ended/Kaya seeming to be in a relationship with a guy suddenly out of nowhere when I thought she didn't like him back that doesn't mean Kaya and Elsbeth couldn't be bi and eventually an item as slow-burn things on these kinds of procedurals take time (though hopefully it wouldn't be a situation like on Bones when Booth and Brennan didn't get together until halfway through the show)and usually at least one love interest before their endgame one and not every episode full of queer yearning and all that has to end with a coming-out, maybe this episode's ending is just one of the many pieces to eventually be put together. Jeez set up what looks like a potential typical-procedural-slowburn-couple otherwise but make it same-sex and suddenly Tumblr forgets how the tropes play out
Hey you know what's super funny about the idea of "good bi rep"?
For a character to be canonically bi you have to make sure and establish that they're attracted to multiple genders. Not all mediums allow you to get inside every character's head or show what they're thinking. Flirting can be read ambiguously, and god forbid they flirt with a character who's not into them and be read as pushy or predatory. So it can be super handy to just mention an ex or two! But you better not mention too many exes because that would make them a slutty bisexual which is (checks notes) bad, and you definitely better be careful about making them poly, because that might make them, uh... greedy. Oh, and those exes? They better be perfectly amiable breakups with no conflict or drama, because it's bad to represent queer people in toxic or abusive relationships (especially queer women! very bad), and you definitely can't have them have lost a partner if the partner was queer because that's "bury your gays..." You should probably also eliminate all trauma from their backstory, just to be safe. You should probably also make sure they're not involved in crime, deception, or anything of the sort, because that would make them "deviant" and a stereotype.
But don't worry! Once you've carefully crafted your nice, monogamous, experienced-but-not-too-experienced Lawful Good bi character, you will be rewarded with your audience deeming them "boring" and quickly passing them over for other characters. :)

Since I thought this most recent Elsbeth episode said Kaya's birthday's April 7th, here's some Kayabeth dollmaker fanart before the day is out in celebration
Tumblr media
indulging my inner Librarians fangirl with a medieval-fantasy AU where they're a seer-in-more-ways-than-one and a newly-dubbed knight
Tumblr media
As best as I can attempt to make gem versions of human characters this is gemsonas of Elsbeth (Carnelian) and Kaya (Onyx) and in the middle is the Kayabeth fusion Indicolite
Tumblr media
and for all those who have a problem with cop shows being cop shows here's a superhero!AU; I haven't thought of super-names for them but powerset-wise Elsbeth's got the "typical Marvel psychic powerset" (a la Professor X, pre-Phoenix-Jean-Grey etc.) and Kaya's basically an earthbender
Tumblr media
this is my attempt at fairy versions of them in their Vivienne Gala dresses from "Elsbeth's Eleven"
Tumblr media
and ending things off with what I hope becomes the "core four" of the show if Kaya and Elsbeth's relationship whatever form it takes can last despite last episode's weirdness while she still can sometimes work with the other two detectives and an elemental!AU based on the elemental correspondences to what I think is their primary one of the four humors.
From left to right you've got Kaya as the world's most toned-down dryad (and yes the pink flower in her hair is because of why you think it is), Edwards channeling her inner Lady-Of-The-Lake in as almost-monochrome as her personality can come off (but still waters still run deep), Donnelly barely looking recognizable because this thing doesn't have any body type diversity, and Elsbeth looking pink and queer af (though she has the angel wings because the fairy wings in this maker looked weird) with way more butterflies in the full pic than the split-screen showed

Someone on the Elsbeth subreddit hating on Kaya for being a flat character kinda made me have an epiphany; Kayabeth basically fit a lot of the tropes you normally see in certain kinds of indie romances with Manic Pixie Dream Girls and stuff so it makes sense that Kaya would be the one perceived as lacking depth because we're seeing this hopefully-eventually-a-love-story from the perspective of Elsbeth, her Manic Pixie Dream Girl who looks more well-rounded/fleshed-out than most because this is her story not the story about someone falling in love with her.

And now I'm thinking about Elsbeth Tascioni and how half of the viewers of her new spinoff show have been calling her the female Columbo and her being as much of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl as a protagonist-who-isn't-a-love-interest can be and the connections between the fae and neurodivergence and hmm....

I hate to do more panic-polling but
Just saying because that episode left me feeling, well, emptier than an Elsbeth episode should usually make me feel and with their lack of interaction and Kaya and the guy I thought she didn't like back suddenly kissing and stuff I just got these waves of anxiety about if our main girls could get back to where things were both in a personal and professional sense (and in what we've seen of him I don't really get a lot of good vibes not in the sense of could be a bad guy but in the sense of not feeling right for Kaya and I say that even without Kayabeth-related bias so I'm not doing the whole hate-the-opposite-gender-character-that-gets-in-the-way-of-the-same-sex-ship thing) and of course it didn't help the mood that Elsbeth instead got partnered with the detective who's her exact opposite kind of weird and not in the fun dramatic-foil way and the main-suspect-we-know-is-the-culprit (aka the character our heroes spend the most time with) was a control-freak-y minimalism-figurative-fetishist. So it didn't help my empathy that everyone was a mess (even Elsbeth who was otherwise doing a lot of the heavy lifting in the joy department had the stuff with Kaya (and Cam basically what felt like coming between them even directly with the birthday thing) and with the aforementioned minimalism guru making her feel insecure about her stuff) and it got me afraid for the future of the show in all but that I know it's renewed (on the one hand an article headline I saw linked on Facebook described Ethan Slater's character as "Kaya's replacement", on the other hand on some other Facebook fan page Kaya was in the photo that went with a headline about the S3 release date). Heck even Buddie on 911 were more connected and they were more physically separated and I've still got freaking "I Got You Babe" stuck in my head like some kind of haunting taunting refrain.
I'm sorry this episode made me such an emotional wreck but as I described like anybody in the episode was really feeling their best and I just don't want my anxiety making me think the same thing I thought after a certain recent Doctor Who episode; that all the plot twists are going to twist the plot the worst way possible because the show's now proven it can disappoint me so why can't it do so again.
