Happy Holy Monday - AKA Happy Claudiataker Day!

I'm officially declaring Holy Monday as Claudiataker Day, by the power vested in me as your local tinfoil theorist! *throws champagne bottle at calendar*

This week (April 13-19) is the holy week that precedes Easter Sunday, consisting of Palm Sunday, Holy Monday, Holy/Fig Tuesday, Holy/Spy Wednesday, Holy/Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy/Great Saturday. Holy Monday is the day on which Jesus Christ is said to have cursed the fig tree, cleansed the temple, and responded to the questioning of his authority.

So what does Holy Monday have to do with Claudiataker? Holy Monday is actually the day Claudia Phantomhive was born - April 5th, 1830. But since Easter, and by extension Holy Monday, is a moveable feast dependent on the lunar cycle, it doesn't fall on the same day every year. And in the year 1331, it fell on March 25 - which I believe to be the date Undertaker/Cedric K. Ros- was born. If he died on January 28, 1366, he would have been 34 when he committed suicide - the same age his son Vincent would be when murdered in 1885.

So in a way, Undertaker and Claudia share a birthday! This shared birthday is remarkably similar to a popular medieval French tale of forbidden romance that I believe served as inspiration for Undertaker and Claudia's love story. In that story, the two lovers are born on the same day (Palm Sunday) and are both named after the flowers strongly associated with Easter - red roses, and white lilies.

Easter has already been associated with Undertaker - both with the religious imagery of his character (the crown of thorns on his death scythe and on Claudia's locket especially), and with the reveal of his secret identity as a grim reaper on the Campania falling on Good Friday - April 19, 1889.

This year is shaping up to be a very exciting Easter. Holy Monday falls on April 14th this year, of all days, and we have another very exciting Good Friday approaching - April 18, 2025. This Good Friday the Black Butler hiatus will end with the release of Chapter 214...

And well. Chapter 214, Good Friday. It would be a very well-timed opportunity for another big reveal about Undertaker's identity, now wouldn't it?

hello <3 quick question for you: do you know if someone (or you) tried to read cedric parents date of birth/death in the lineage panel? i understand it's kinda "censored" but maybe just a vague idea could give us a hint? idk lots of love for you and your amazing blog <3

i'm sorry, it's me again ^^' i forgot to say one last thing about the lineage panel, i'm curious to see how they're gonna show us ciel's family tree in season 5 without revealing cedric dates, since there will be no bubble text. What do you say? thanks and sorry for the double ask

Hi Anon <3 Thanks for the ask & the love! It's an interesting question, but I think it's a non-starter for clues; the numbers seem pretty indistinguishable to me. I think they're purposefully gibberish.

For an example, let's look at Claudia's father (presumably) who died sometime after 1829 and before 1866. The first 2 digits of the year of death are '1' and '8' - but the next two digits don't resemble numbers imo.

Now - since he must have been born in the 1700s, we could assume the digit that resembles a 'd' is a '7', which might mean that her father died in 18?7. So going off of that, he might have died in 1847, when Claudia was just shy of adulthood at the age of 17.

My theory is that Cedric/Undertaker was born in 1331, so I could make some deductions for his mother (presumably) based off that - but it we're trying to independently analyze the numbers/letters, I think it is far too ambiguous to be any solid evidence. Yana gave us soooo many breadcrumbs in this panel, but I don't think information about Vincent and Frances' grandparents was included :(

As for how they're going to show this panel in the anime - that's a really good point! I hadn't even thought of that. I guess they could potentially have Sascha's thumb cover the remainder of Cedric's personal info (which would be kinda... cheesy? Obvious?) or maybe accomplish it with some strategic camera framing/depth of field? I'm curious now! However they do it, I am very excited to see this panel animated and to further spread my Rossignol propaganda!!!

Cedric K. Ros- & The Significance of Being Born on March 25

AKA Undertaker is the New Year's Baby. Happy New Years Eve! Did you know that March 25th used to be considered New Year's Day?

For most of Europe, March 25th was considered the start of the New Year throughout the middle ages. In France, they moved the start of the new year to January 1st in 1564, and in England it wasn't changed until 1752.

I share the opinion that Undertaker is Cedric K Ros-, and I have a theory outlining why I believe his last name is Rossignol. Based off the popular theory that his reaper serial number means he died in 1366, and a connection I believe they share with a medieval French romance tale 'Floire et Blancheflor', I think that he was born on March 25, 1331. In a way, this would mean he and Cloudia were born on the same day, as both their birthdays would fall on Holy Monday, a day of the holy week that precedes Easter Sunday.

But if he was born on March 25, 1331, that would also mean he was born on New Year's Day. March 25 is the day of the Annunciation - the day on which the archangel Gabriel came to Mary and told her that "she would concieve and bear a son through a virgin birth and become the mother of Jesus Christ, the Christian Messiah and Son of God, marking the Incarnation." Girl, ya knocked up. This is exactly 9 months before December 25th, in case you were side-eyeing Mary 🤨. The day was chosen as the start of the new year by some dude in AD 525 because according to Christian theology, the era of grace began with the Incarnation of Christ. But that's not all!

It was traditionally believed that the Creation of the world, the Fall of Adam and Eve, the Sacrifice of Isaac, the Exodus from Egypt, the Incarnation, the Crucifixion and Death of Christ, and the Last Judgment all took place or will take place on March 25.

...And also the birth of Cedric K Ros-! Woo 🎉 What a special baby boy our Undertaker is.

Depictions of the Annunciation also usually show St. Gabriel the Archangel handing lilies to Our Lady. Mary is often represented by lilies, and the Madonna Lily, named for her, is often called the Annunciation Lily in honor of this Feast and is a perfect ornament for the day. The Venerable Bede (A.D. 672-735) described the transluscent white petals as symbolic of Mary's pure body, and the golden anthers as a symbol of the glory of her soul when she was taken up to Heaven at the Assumption

Madonna lily is just another word for the white lily, the flower that is often associated with Undertaker's presence in the story in the manga (further discussed here)

This flower is also strongly associated with Easter, and there are a lot of links between Undertaker, Cloudia, and Easter. It has several meanings - notably associated with purity, loss, renewal and resurrection. The lily is a symbol strongly tied to France, French Royalty, and French Christianity - beginning when the first pagan King of the Franks was persuaded to change his insignia from three toads to three lilies by his Christian wife, Clotilde, patron saint of the lame, after an angel gifted them to her. (My write up is in the works for King Clovis, Queen Clotilde, and Emperor Charlemagne, all of whom relate back to Floire et Blancheflor.) This is the origin of the fleur-de-lis as it relates to the French Monarchy.

But wait, there's more! You thought this was just a boring history lesson? Wrong - buckle up for some head scratching astronomy!

March 25 was also the date on which the spring equinox was originally set (the date now varies from the 19-21 March), also known as the Vernal equinox. This is the date where the day and night are more or less equal at 12 hours each. The location of the Vernal equinox is also known as the first point of Aries;

The first point of Aries, also known as the cusp of Aries, is the location of the Vernal equinox, used as a reference point in celestial coordinate systems. The first point of Aries is considered to be the celestial "prime meridian" from which right ascension is calculated.

So, right ascension is a way of locating a celestial body - and it's measured in hours. Instead of 360 degrees, one full rotation is 24 hours. And the Vernal equinox/first point of Aries is the starting point from which you measure. Grab the tape measure stopwatch!

I wasn't able to find any particular superstitions in French/Breton/Celtic culture for children born on this day. The general consensus seems to be that New Year's babies/babies born on the day of the Annunciation would have been considered lucky, blessed by God, and perhaps gifted with divine foresight/prophecy.

I don't think Undertaker would agree with the whole lucky and blessed thing...but I'm not going to rule out the potential link to him having foresight - or even him believing he had the gift of foresight. A sense of impending doom is a common phenomenon in people who suffer from depression or PTSD.

The Vernal equinox, along with the Annunciation, both pertain to the idea of spring, of renewal, of sowing seed 😏 Nice. I have nothing further to add.

Finally, and of course most importantly, this makes him an Aries. Undertaker would be an Aries...says me, a notorious Aries' lover. Him AND Cloudia, Lord help us those two would have been trouble...

In celebration of 200 followers (thank you 🥹), I wanted to post a theory I've been working on for a while now! I'll have to split it into parts, but I've been excited to share it - It's sort of a direct sequel to my Rossignol as Cedric K. Ros-'s last name theory (Rossignol being the French word for 'nightingale'.) This led me to another conclusion, and I've been wanting to post a deep dive for a while now about what I believe to be Undertaker's true identity.

I'm convinced that Undertaker is actually 13 nightingales, stacked on top of one another in a trench coat cassock.
