58th Oscars Best Actress

5. Jessica Lange as Patsy Cline - Sweet Dreams
For a movie allegedly about Cline’s life the character itself gets very little focus within the film giving Lange very limited opportunities to actually shine and wow us with our performance. The two major problems I have with the performance is that the accent constantly changes every scene with sometimes it being higher and other times sounding lower and secondly in my opinion if you’re going to do a biopic about a singer then you should at least know how to sing somewhat like them. Unfortunately Lange lip-synced in the film and never once does it look convincing. I will say she has great chemistry with Harris who’s playing her husband. But overall a mediocre performance that isn’t helped by the fact that the script gives her nothing to do.
Tumblr media
4. Anne Bancroft as Mother Miriam Ruth - Agnes of God
Lead? In no way is this a lead performance but this isn’t the first or the last time we’ll be looking at category fraud. I was initially going to put her third but there really isn’t a lot to discuss about this performance as within the movie she sort of comes and goes. It’s a very mysterious performance and we’re never truly sure of her characters true motivations and I think that was a good way to play it. Bancroft shows us that Mother Miriam is a woman dedicated to God and also a woman trying to be sympathetic and one that still remembers her life before becoming a nun. If this had been a supporting nomination I’d probably be more positive about it but as a lead one it just doesn’t work.
Tumblr media
3. Meryl Streep as Baroness Karen Blixen - Out of Africa
This is a very subtle and more quite performance compared to the others in this category and despite having almost two hours of screen time within the film I still find myself trying to remember what she did that impressed me. The accent was right and the chemistry between her and Redford was great and you could really see the character evolve from someone quite close minded with a set point of views to someone more open and who gained more experience and confused to do things for herself.
Tumblr media
2. Whoopi Goldberg as Celie Johnson - The Color Purple
This is like one of the most amazing debut performances I’ve ever watched. Like you can really see how carefully Goldberg is acting and making sure to show all the sides of Celie. Like initially the character doesn’t speak a lot since years of abuse has made Celie fearful of speaking her mind and during this part of the film Goldberg is acting with her face in order to show us what the character is feeling. Then eventually we get to see Celie’s curiosity and her finding confidence to stand up for herself after spending time around confident women like Shug and Sofia. Then finally seeing her strength and her standing up for herself is so beautiful and it’s all because of how carefully Goldberg planned her characters evolution and she never once rushed it. The only problem with the performances is the actual tone of the movie which sometimes lets her down as they for some reason try to make serious and deep moments into comedic ones and it doesn’t work and feels off with Goldberg’s performance.
Tumblr media
1. Gerdaline Page as Mrs. Carrie Watts - The Trip to Bountiful
Page is greatly helped by the fact that the film is entirely about her and the script never takes attention away from her but it’s still a very sweet and heartbreaking portrayal of a woman in the final stages of her life. Page’s chemistry with all the supporting characters is amazing and you can really feel the bond and conflict amongst them. I think the thing that impressed the most about the performance is how layered it was like within scenes Page would have to be portraying two or three different emotions at once. Like when recounting story about her past in Bountiful she’d need to be happy about remembering where she came from but also devastated over the fact that everything is gone. Reminiscent of everything she once lived and also scared of the fact that everything’s coming to an end and all the things she was unable to achieve. It’s just really impressive and detailed performances thats stuck with me for a while now.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
I think overall this was a very good year for women in the leading category as we got to watch complex characters develop and evolve and usually become empowered to go out and fight and get everything they believed in. All the actresses tried their best and some were even able to overcome issues like lack of screen time or a limited script. I’ll probably revisit this year one day when my writings better as I’m not completely happy with how I’ve written about the performances but hopefully I got my point across.

Whoopi Goldberg Performance artist, EGOT winner Daytime conversationalist and activist is 65 today. A few of the movies from her adventure.
Celie Harris Johnson in The Color Purple. D: Steven Spielberg (1985). For the role of Celie, the abused child bride of Alice Walker’s Dickensian bestseller, Spielberg chose a New York performance artist who had never acted onscreen before. But whether Goldberg’s tentativeness came from inexperience or an actor’s intuitiveness, it was perfect for Celie whose abused childhood and isolating servitude to a much older “husband” (Danny Glover) casts a shroud over her personality, a shroud broken by an affair with a blues singer (Margaret Avery). When, after their first night together Goldberg takes her hand from her mouth and reveals a radiant smile, it’s like the sun coming out from a storm cloud.
Oda Mae Brown in Ghost. D: Jerry Zucker (1990). Goldberg became the second African-American female actor to win an Oscar (Hattie McDaniel in Gone With the Wind was the first) for her role in this movie about a recently deceased man (Patrick Swayze) trying to protect his wife (Demi Moore) from the people who killed him. Her comic turn as a fake medium who finds she can actually see the dead, didn’t really carry the weight of that milestone, but it was a smart version of the persona she established in the 80s – the hip black woman who grounds the high-minded acting of her white counterparts. And if that wasn’t much different than what Hattie McDaniel did, it still made her the smartest person in the movie.
Odessa Cotter in The Long Walk Home D: Richard Pearce (1991). This almost ignored movie about the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott, (which transported the black workers to the white side of town – in the back of the bus) starred Goldberg as a white family’s maid who joins the boycott, which gives her a two-hour walk to and from work. Goldberg shows us every inch of the weary stoicism in the face of a movement that nobody really knew was going to work, catching a seminal moment in history in one woman’s tired face.

Definition and Definition of Film / Movie While the players who play a role in the film are referred to as actors (men) or actresses (women). There is also the term extras that are used as supporting characters with few roles in the film. This is different from the main actors who have bigger and more roles. Being an actor and an actress must be demanded to have good acting talent, which is in accordance with the theme of the film he is starring in. In certain scenes, the actor’s role can be replaced by a stuntman or a stuntman. The existence of a stuntman is important to replace the actors doing scenes that are difficult and extreme, which are usually found in action action films. Films can also be used to convey certain messages from the filmmaker. Some industries also use film to convey and represent their symbols and culture. Filmmaking is also a form of expression, thoughts, ideas, concepts, feelings and moods of a human being visualized in film. The film itself is mostly a fiction, although some are based on fact true stories or based on a true story. There are also documentaries with original and real pictures, or biographical films that tell the story of a character. There are many other popular genre films, ranging from action films, horror films, comedy films, romantic films, fantasy films, thriller films, drama films, science fiction films, crime films, documentaries and others. That’s a little information about the definition of film or movie. The information was quoted from various sources and references. Hope it can be useful. >>>* *TV MOVIE* *>>> The first television shows were experimental, sporadic broadcasts viewable only within a very short range from the broadcast tower starting in the 1930s. Televised events such as the 1936 Summer Olympics in Germany, the 19340 coronation of King George VI in the UK, and David Sarnoff’s famous introduction at the 1939 New York World’s Fair in the US spurred a growth in the medium, but World War II put a halt to development until after the war. The 19440 World MOVIE inspired many Americans to buy their first television set and then in 1948, the popular radio show Texaco Star Theater made the move and became the first weekly televised variety show, earning host Milton Berle the name “”Mr Television”” and demonstrating that the medium was a stable, modern form of entertainment which could attract advertisers. The first national live television broadcast in the US took place on September 4, 1951 when President Harry Truman’s speech at the Japanese Peace Treaty Conference in San Francisco was transmitted over AT&T’s transcontinental cable and microwave radio relay system to broadcast stations in local markets. The first national color broadcast (the 1954 Tournament of Roses Parade) in the US occurred on January 1, 1954. During the following ten years most network broadcasts, and nearly all local programming, continued to be in black-and-white. A color transition was announced for the fall of 1965, during which over half of all network prime-time programming would be broadcast in color. The first all-color prime-time season came just one year later. In 19402, the last holdout among daytime network shows converted to color, resulting in the first completely all-color network season. >>>* *Formats and Genres* *>>> See also: List of genres § Film and television formats and genres Television shows are more varied than most other forms of media due to the wide variety of formats and genres that can be presented. A show may be fictional (as in comedies and dramas), or non-fictional (as in documentary, news, and reality television). It may be topical (as in the case of a local newscast and some made-for-television films), or historical (as in the case of many documentaries and fictional MOVIE). They could be primarily instructional or educational, or entertaining as is the case in situation comedy and game shows.[citation needed] A drama program usually features a set of actors playing characters in a historical or contemporary setting. The program follows their lives and adventures. Before the 1980s, shows (except for soap opera-type serials) typically remained static without story arcs, and the main characters and premise changed little.[citation needed] If some change happened to the characters’ lives during the episode, it was usually undone by the end. Because of this, the episodes could be broadcast in any order.[citation needed] Since the 1980s, many MOVIE feature progressive change in the plot, the characters, or both. For instance, Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere were two of the first American prime time drama television MOVIE to have this kind of dramatic structure,[4][better source needed] while the later MOVIE Babylon 5 further exemplifies such structure in that it had a predetermined story running over its intendevd five-season run.[citvatio””&n needed] In 2012, it was reported that television was growing into a larger component of major media companies’ revenues than film.[5] Some also noted the increase in quality of some television programs. In 2012, Academy-Award-winning film director Steven Soderbergh, commenting on ambiguity and complexity of character and narrative, stated: “”I think those qualities are now being seen on television and that people who want to see stories that have those kinds of qualities are watching television. >>>* *Thank’s For All And Happy Watching* *>>> Find all the movies that you can stream online, including those that were screened this week. ‘ABC News Live Prime’ Anchor Linsey Davis First To Interview the Actresses Playing Characters Celie and Sofia for Primetime Special Airing Thursday, Feb 3. (8:00-9:00 p.m. EST), on ABC
The Special Features an Exclusive Clip of ‘The Color Purple’ Producer Oprah Winfrey Delivering the Casting News to One of the Actresses
Tumblr media
ABC News’ groundbreaking “Soul of a Nation” returns with the special “Screen Queens Rising,” exploring how Black actresses, a historically overlooked and undervalued group in Hollywood, have in recent years begun to ascend to the top echelons of entertainment and American culture. The special will reveal the lead actresses cast in Warner Bros.’ film adaptation of the beloved musical “The Color Purple” and feature an exclusive clip of “The Color Purple” producer Oprah Winfrey delivering the casting news to one of the actresses. “ABC News Live Prime” anchor Linsey Davis is first to interview the actresses playing Celie and Sofia in the film.
“Screen Queens Rising” examines how Black actresses of Hollywood have become power brokers as well as the iconic moments and roles that have paved the way for them today. The special, hosted by Davis and ABC News senior national affairs correspondent Deborah Roberts, includes Roberts’ interview with actress Tessa Thompson and ABC News’ “GMA3: What You Need to Know” co-anchor T.J. Holmes’ interview with actress and director Halle Berry. The hour also features interviews with actresses Debbie Allen, Jackée Harry, Marla Gibbs and Regina Hall; and entertainment reporters who look back at the first milestones for Black women in Hollywood, discussing the triumphs, the obstacles and those who blazed the trail. The special includes the return of the fan-favorite “In the Kitchen” discussion moderated by “The View” co-host Sunny Hostin. “Soul of a Nation Presents: Screen Queens Rising” airs Thursday, Feb. 3 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EST), on ABC.
Following “Screen Queens Rising,” ABC News’ “Soul of a Nation Presents: X / o n e r a t e d – The Murder of Malcolm X and 55 Years to Justice” profiles Muhammad Abdul Aziz, a man who was wrongfully convicted of Malcolm X’s assassination. Conducted by ABC News “Nightline” co-anchor Byron Pitts, the special features the first TV interview with Aziz since his exoneration and retraces Malcolm X’s shocking 1965 assassination, Aziz’s decades behind bars and on parole, and the devastating impact on Aziz’s family. “X / o n e r a t e d” features interviews with family and advocates of Aziz, including his wife Paula McLellan, son Craig Butler, daughter Edris B. Green and independent historian Abdur-Rahman Muhammad, as well as A. Peter Bailey, a friend and associate of Malcolm X who was at the Audubon Ballroom on the day of the assassination. The special also includes interviews with those who conducted the joint reinvestigation that ultimately led to Aziz‘s exoneration in November 2021, including Aziz’s civil rights attorneys David Shanies and Deborah Francois, Innocence Project attorney Vanessa Potkin and former Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr., who was interviewed by ABC News chief justice correspondent Pierre Thomas. The special will have interviews with Shahid Johnson, Ameen Johnson and Khalil Ibn Islam, the children of the late Khalil Islam, who was also wrongfully convicted for the assassination of Malcolm X and posthumously exonerated, as well as Malcolm X’s daughter Ilyasah Shabazz. Journalists, filmmakers and activists reflect on the enduring legacy of Malcolm X and raise larger questions about how and why both the assassination and the wrongful convictions happened and why it took so long to resolve. The special also includes a cold open featuring Academy Award®-nominated trumpeter Terence Blanchard and Tony-nominated actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, star of ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” spoken-word performance of the classic poem “Malcolm X” by Gwendolyn Brooks. “X / o n e r a t e d” airs Thursday, Feb. 3 (9:00-10:00 p.m. EST), on ABC.
“Soul of a Nation Presents: Screen Queens Rising” and “Soul of a Nation Presents: X / o n e r a t e d – The Murder of Malcolm X and 55 Years to Justice” is produced by ABC News. Catherine McKenzie and Seni Tienabeso are executive producers, and Candace Smith Chekwa is supervising editor for “Screen Queens Rising.” Jeanmarie Condon and Melia Patria are executive producers, and Stephanie Wash is senior editorial producer for “X / o n e r a t e d.” “Screen Queens Rising” and “X / o n e r a t e d” are directed by Tine.
