question: do altamaian character/place names generally follow latin pronunciation rules? (i’ve been mentally pronouncing lux with a long u, cepheid as “ceh-FAY-id”, altamaian rhyming with mayan, stress on second to last syllables etc) are you planning on including a pronunciation guide or is it latin unless specified otherwise?

(Thank you so much for asking about this I love talking about SCverse language) A full Altamaian pronunciation guide is one of a bunch of things I've been working on for many moons now. I think of it as "Latin with a rust belt accent"--the u in lux is more of a schwa, for example. Classical Latin pronunciations are close, but not quite midwestern enough lmao. (Edit: Altamaian does rhyme with Mayan, and Basilean rhymes with Brass and Chilean).

Cepheid's name is Attenui in-universe and Greek-derived irl (it's a term for a type of variable star first observed in the constellation Cepheus--a leftover, on the doylist level, from when the alien characters in SC were going to be named after the types of stars they were modeled on biologically, before I realized there were way too many of them, most of the terms didn't make pretty names, and I wanted to come up with names based on the imagined cultures anyway). It's pronounced like "CEH-fee-id" according to the oxford online dictionary, but over time I've begun to pronounce it like "CEH-faid" (with a diphthong) in reference to the character because Atennui tends to emphasize first syllables and turn similarly-fronted vowels into diphthongs. I fully acknowledge that nobody's going to go along with that intuitively especially when I diminutize it as "Cephie", and I sort of like when people emphasize the second-to-last syllable because it sounds like "Sophia," an also-Greek name that means "wisdom."

So the answer is, pronunciation deets are coming, but also, it's a big galaxy and things are a little open to interpretation. I suspect for example that certain Altamaian accents would give "lux" a proper Latin long-u, but Lux the character has an Ashtivan accent so fwiw the first time you "hear it" in the text you hear it with a shorter, darker vowel than usual.

The Thornevale's were a noble High Elven family within the large town of Everkeep, located in Cormyr. The town was relatively large and had been established for almost one and half thousand years at this point, having been founded by a group of setters, one of which was a High Elven couple Eridanus and Aelar. The man made a deal with the devil known as Mephistopheles, and in exchange for power and prosperity within the town, his family would bare a number of "devil children". Over time the couple grew to be one of the most wealthy people in the town, working in the trading business between Everkeep and other towns and cities across Cormyr. As the years went on, the couple bore three children, the eldest and middle children (Taurus and Aquila) were born Tiefling's, yet the youngest child (Aries) was born Elven in both nature and appearance. The first two children were soon cast out from the family, being a reminder of their parents deal with a devil, and proof that the family's history was not as noble as they portrayed themselves to be, whilst the youngest was praised and treasured, raised to be the next heir of the family.

Eventually the youngest child, Aries, found a spouse of his own, Eldar, and together they bore four Elven children: Perseus, twins Lacerta and Lyra, and finally Volans. For a time they were relieved that their family was seemingly free from baring any more Tiefling children. That was, until they bore their 5th and final child, Carina Cepheus, who was born a Tiefling with light blue-grey skin. Once again the family had a reminder of their parents deal for power, and once again the child was shunned, neglected by his parents and largely being raised by his elder siblings.

Cepheus never understood why his parents never paid attention to him growing up, and they paid even less attention to him when he came out as trans and changed his name to Cepheus. But he read many books during his childhood that talked about great wizards, and so he dedicated his life to learning magic so that one day he could finally make his parents proud. He had heard of many great wizards being taught at the Blackstaff Academy of Waterdeep, and with the capital of Cormyr, Suzail, not being far away from Everkeep and Suzail having a magical gate connecting it to Waterdeep, Cepheus applied for a place at the Academy once he turned 18, but was turned down. He tried to not let it bother him as he then applied for a spot at the two highest Magical Schools in Suzail, but was turned down from both due to his Tiefling nature. Eventually he applied for the Suzail Magical Academy. It wasn't a fancy place by any means, and definitely wasn't his top choice of school, but he was desperate to get a formal education in magic, so he applied and was, to his surprise, accepted at the age of 20.

After being accepted into the school, he was moved to a dorm with one other student, a Tiefling called Xanthus. The two joked about the school placing the only two Tiefling's in the same dorm together and the two of them quickly became good friends as time went on. For the first few years it seemed like any other magical school. They took classes in magic, learning about all the different schools of magic and the types of spells each school practiced. But eventually, things took a turn for the worst during the start of Cepheus' fourth year at the school.

He was selected as one of the school's most promising students, and was told he'd be taking extra late night classes alongside his regular studies. Things seemed normal at first, taking more advanced lessons in different spells, which slowly started to focus more and more on necromancy as time went on. It was such a slow transition that by the time he realized the fact that the school was running a necromantic cult, it was too late. The professors praised his magical abilities, promising that he'd make his parents so proud and that was the whole reason was here, wasn't it? To make his parents proud? So he clung onto telling himself that this was what he had to do.

But then, things reached a breaking point. Cepheus had noticed Xanthus didn't come back to their dorm one evening and though he worried at first, he assumed his roommate was probably off with friends or perhaps was a party of some kind, as he was known to do. It wouldn't have been the first time Xanthus got caught up at some fun event and stayed later than intended and chose to crash as a friends house for the night. But Cepheus really started to worry when Xanthus didn't show up the next morning, or for the rest of the day for that matter. But during his "late night classes", he found out where Xanthus had gone.

The professors presented it like a test of sorts, as they explained that they had to prove they truly had what it took to be useful to the school. Then the corpses of several students were brought out, as the professors explained that these students were deemed "not worthy enough" to be in their school, but that they could still be of use to the school in another way, as the students were told they would be practicing reanimating and controlling corpses like a puppet. Filled with horror, Cepheus stared at the corpse of his dear friend and roommate Xanthus, his body filling with dread and alarm bells screaming to him that this was too far. But the professors called him up first and was to be the first student to show the others how it was done. They told him how to perform the spell, but quickly grew short with the Tiefling as he refused to perform the spell on his friends corpse - though with so much pressure being put on him as his professor shouted at him in front of everyone else, he cast the spell on Xanthus' body. However the spell quickly went out of control, reanimating the body, but instead of Cepheus controlling Xanthus' body, it attacked him like a wild animal that was out of control. His sharp claws tore at the skin on Cepheus' face, leaving traces of necromantic magic within the scars due to the nature of the spell, and as Cepheus tried to escape, he got scratched up even more, to the point that Xanthus managed to rip out his right eyeball. Eventually Cepheus managed to escape once the professors finally took control of the situation. It was clear that he was being used as a demonstration to the other students about what would happen if they also didn't perform the spell correctly. Once he was free, he bolted. Cepheus ran as fast as he could away from the school and away from the capital. Away from everything.

It was about a tenday later when he ended up in the town of Falkirk, on the outskirts of Hullack Forest and eventually stopped to rest, exhausted and still terribly shaken from the incident. Feeling his stomach growl, he tried to find the nearest shop that sold food, keeping himself covered with a cloak he found during his escape from the school. He eventually stopped by a bakery that sold hot pastries, and was run by a sweet Half-Elven lady, Elanor. She took note of how shaken Cepheus seemed and gave him a pastry on the house as a treat, knowing that he needed the food. She fussed over him a bit and definitely seemed like the motherly type and once she saw the fresh scars on his face, she fussed even more, worried for his health. She took him inside to where she called for her wife, a human woman named Galryn, who was a known healer within the town who worked in the towns temple to Silvanus. She took a look at his scars and performed some healing magic for him so that he at least wouldn't get an infection. She also told him that she has working on providing prosthetics for people on the side, for those who had too greater injury to be completely healed. While the false eye didn't serve any practical use as it couldn't help him see from that eye again, it at least helped him with his confidence and also protected the socket as well.

The couple allowed him to stay with them for as long as he needed, and though he tried paying them for their hospitality, they always refused. They fussed over him often like a mother would, with Elanor always going on about how he needs to get more meat on his bones and would always make sure he had plenty to eat.

He stayed with them for about a year, helping out with the bakery as he continued to study magic by himself, making frequent trips to the towns library where he would study for hours. Though he was still driven by a need to prove himself to his family, feeling like he only proved their doubts about him. Eventually he decided to head out again, determined to find a way to prove himself to his family, and he knew that many great wizards of the past travelled. So that's what he did.

[For the bg3 version of him, he ends up getting taken by the mind flayers and goes down the path of the good-ending for the game. For the D&D version, he ends up meeting with his new party members and goes on that journey.]

good morning. today is gonna be a weird one. i learned i missed the cherry blossom season, but i need more of the petals, so later today im going to be time traveling. ill make sure everything rolls over normally tomorrow, but ill only be gifting and such once today, just to make it easier on myself. anyway, isabelle says kicks is here, and the statue from yesterday arrived. ill be sending that off to my friend later today

gwen and bones are both not home. im thinking of changing out one of the nearby pear trees for an apple tree

sparro is out somewhere too, but clay is home. i gave him a gold rose and he gave me a rain hat. he also told me that my favorite color being orange makes me a radish

Firstly, I wanted to say that I absolutely adore your zombie apocalypse AU and even created a couple OCs based off it! While doing that, though, a question came to mind, you said if a zombie with missing limbs is cured, they may not get their limbs back (due to how long they have been missing). But what about eyes? "Stop ignoring me!"

Remus smiles a shark's smile when Logan's eyes glow orange. He is supposed to be pleased at this point, he thinks. Instead, he just feels vaguely sick to his stomach, like someone's taken his internal organs and given them a good shake, right into a blender.

"Oooh, Logan, now you're speaking my language," Remus purrs, but it feels like every syllable is full of needles, sharp and pointed, slicing his throat to ribbons as someone rips them free of his lungs. "But who do you really want to scream that at?" He sinks down, and promptly bursts into tears, curled up in the center of Janus's bed, breathing in the spicy cinnamon and chai scent of his boyfriend.

"Remus?" Janus asks in concern, from the doorway. "Remus, what's wrong?"

"Everything," Remus hiccups. His face is blotchy red and his nose can't stop streaming snot into his mustache. Anyone else would probably be grossed out. Remus can't bring himself to care. His eyes are puffy and red-rimmed and they burn, like someone's poured a few drops of battery acid into his tear ducts. "I- I said- Logan-" He wails again, loud and sharp. Janus's arms come around him, pulling him close, uncaring of the tears spurting everywhere and the snot clotting his mustache.

"What about Logan?" Janus asks softly.

"Orange spoke through me," Logan says from the doorway, his voice calm and collected. Too calm. He sounds like he does when he talks to Roman and Patton sometimes, when they've spoken over him for the millionth time, and he's too tired to care anymore. Remus's stomach sinks to the tips of his shoes. He's fucked up. He's fucked up so badly, and he doesn't even understand why. This was supposed to be a simple day. Logan had scheduled everything perfectly.

And then Remus came around to fuck it all up. His intrusive thoughts just kept bulging out of his head like the skin was about to split open and birth a thousand squirming, wriggling maggots, blood, and brain matter into the world, and he just-

He fucked up.

"I'm sorry!" Remus blurts out, as Janus rubs soothing circles into his back, comfort he doesn't deserve, not truly. It belongs to Logan, not him. He's not the one who became Orange's puppet today. He's not the one crammed full of orange juice energy, squished into every crack and crevice of his being.

"Apology accepted," Logan says, and he doesn't sound cold anymore, he just sounds...tired. Remus could weep in relief and he does, as Logan joins them on the bed, wrapping his arms around Remus and Janus both.

"Are you all right?" Logan asks. "Your intrusive thoughts..."

"Peachy!" Remus says, his voice cracking on the word. Logan frowns, then pulls him closer.

"We'll figure it out," Janus says softly, his tone warm and soothing. It's enough to make Remus's eyelids start to droop, worn out after the near panic attack and fit of crying. Janus summons a clean handkerchief and gently wipes off his face, banishing the cloth into nothing when he's finished. Normally, Remus might protest at the removal of another layer of grime, but he just sighs in relief this time, glad to have the mucus and residue of tears wiped free.

"So Nico, huh?" Remus asks in a watery voice, attempting an eyebrow waggle. Logan smiles at it, and Janus even laughs, a short, soft burst that makes Remus's chest warm and fuzzy, like a baby caterpillar.

"Nico," Logan agrees. He sounds a little too worn out for Remus's liking and his arm tightens around Logan's back, yanking him closer.

"Your schedule was a great idea, Lo Lo," Remus says loyally. "If Thomas doesn't listen next time, I'll nail his fingers to a chalk board."

"I don't think that would help, cephy," Logan says. "But thank you."

The waves of intrusive thoughts that usually batter his brain recede, at least for now, and Remus leans against his boyfriends, soft and safe and warm.

Y’all ready to meet the backup twins and their big backup bro (and a couple others)? I sure hope so because I’m doing it anyway.

Remnant (my little bastard child): Remnant activated in an abandoned daycare in a Mega PizzaPlex in Canada. How Eclipse found this PizzaPlex. Nobody knows. They’ve all even asked Eclipse, he didn’t even know that PizzaPlex existed. Remnant woke up inside the daycare with very little memory besides the rest of the celestial family, though his personality is much like Blood Moon’s minus the bloodlust. He loves pranks and causing chaos. He showed this off for the first time by popping into Sun & Moon’s daycare with his twin, Plerion and scaring the life out of Sun and Moon, who both screamed at the twins jumping out and scaring them. He gets along quite well with Lunar, who regularly gets pulled into Remnant and Plerion’s pranks on their friends and older brother, Emission.

Plerion (my other little bastard child): Plerion activated in the same Canadian PizzaPlex as Remnant and Emission. He’s technically the youngest of the three siblings, though he acts a teeny bit more mature than Remnant. Much like Remnant, Plerion’s personality base was Blood Moon, though his memory files were corrupted and needed to be reset due to them making him glitch out. Plerion still has glitches from time to time due to this, though not nearly as bad as they were when he had Eclipse’s memory files. Plerion loves causing chaos, like Remnant, though he only does small pranks and doesn’t much like people getting hurt or too scared from said pranks. Plerion loves playing hide and seek and tag, something Emission used to play with the twins constantly.

Emission: A very glitchy backup that activated a few months before Remnant and Plerion in the Canadian PizzaPlex. Emission’s glitches appear to others as ‘seizures’ though these glitches take a lot from Emission. His battery suffers mainly from these glitches but also his safety protocols and he has temporary blackouts during these glitches. These glitches unfortunately stem from his core being unfinished, which can’t quite be fixed in a way that wouldn’t wipe him completely or cause him to be non-sentient. Emission eventually gets bad enough with the glitches that the twins must take him to Sun and Moon to be fixed in their PizzaPlex. Moon is able to mostly fix him, though his glitches have made his battery very weak to charge and he is mostly bedbound for a while. Moon eventually manages to create both a battery that can withstand the glitches and a mobile charging system.

Subsatellite: A backup in Moon, Litey activates when the kill code reactivates, due to the jostling KC becoming his own AI does to the mindscape. Litey and Lunar don’t quite realize who each other are, mostly due to Subsatellite not having any of Eclipse’s memories other than a few of those that are positive memories of Lunar. They simply run together and hide from KC once KC has taken over. By the time Monty comes in to save Lunar, Lite and Lunar have talked very quietly about who each other are and have adopted each other as brothers and Lunar has given Lite his name. Monty has to take Subsatellite out as well as Lunar, though he has to stay longer since they weren’t in the same place when he found Lunar and he can’t leave the other comfort tiny in Moon’s head. Lunar and Subsatellite are trauma-bonded, it takes a bit for either of them to leave each other’s sides and Sun, Moon, and Monty are understanding of this and allow them their time to gather themselves before trying to get them over that separation anxiety. Once they’re able to leave each other for short periods of time, Subsatellite absolutely adores Moon. He’s scared of KC but Moon is much nicer to him. Due to his name and his slight attachment to Moon, Sun and Lunar sometimes lightly tease them telling Moon that Lite is his son.

Cepheid (my poor boy): Cephy activates in Sun during the fight with Blood Moon. Sun is preoccupied with the spell, Eclipse is preoccupied with getting the boot, and Blood Moon is working on destroying the body, all of this cumulates to Cepheid activating and clawing his way away from Blood Moon, crying and trying to get away. Blood Moon takes great joy with their prey fighting away (they think he’s Eclipse) and proceeds to play with their prey. They trick Cepheid into thinking they were done hurting him only to shock him multiple times repeatedly. Cepheid screaming is what draws Moon’s attention to the fight, because Cepheid’s voice is high pitched than Sun’s and definitely not Eclipse’s (think like Lunar’s pitch but Sunny’s voice). Moon has Monty call off the twins, as Sun has already done the expelling of Eclipse. Moon takes poor Cepheid out of Sun’s body and into a body of his own. Cephy is extremely terrified of being hurt again, he’s very shaky and weak as well, he’s very skittish and barely gets emotionally attached to Sun, Moon, and Lunar. Though, once he’s emotionally attached to them, Cephy loves them with all his poor traumatized heart.

“Okay.” Virgil stopped in the middle of the room to glance at the twins. ��That actually is impressive.”

Remus’ laugh seemed to light up the room and Romans grin grew a few inches at his brothers laugh.

“How exactly did you manage that by the way?”

He sat down criss-crossed on the couch, coffee in his lap, momentarily genuinely distracted by the sight in front of him.

Remus was balancing Roman on his foot.

Yes. Foot. Singular.

He made peace signs at the resident emo, laughing. He had been doing that a lot ever since the twins had their talk. Well, really laughing at least. Not the hollow, fake thing Virgil had seen when Dee was first accepted.

“To be perfectly honest, My Nightmare in black armor-“, Roman answered, before stopping to get his balance back, “I have no idea.”

Remus somehow managed a shrug.

Usually something like that would unsettle Virgil, but after the last few weeks of the twins reconciling..

Well, let’s just say almost nothing could throw him off anymore.

He was content to watch them for a few moments, sometimes slipping from the hot coffee in his lap, trying to shake off the last sleep that stubbornly clung to him.

Logan was the next side that entered the kitchen, grumbling and still in pjs with bed hair. Virgil could hear him loudly complaining in the kitchen about having to get up so early and why he even had a boyfriend if he woke up alone anyway.

He held back a snort when the logical side entered the living room a few seconds later, coffee in hand, cup already half empty.

Logan was many things, but he had never been a morning person.

You shouldn’t even talk to him before he finished his first coffee.

“Morning, shooting star!”

Apparently, Remus still didn’t get the memo.

Then again, the petname was sweet enough to make a dust of pink appear on Logans cheeks and brought him to raise his head.

And promptly raise an eyebrow.

“It’s too early for antics like that. Patton will be down soon and he will want to prepare breakfast.. And good morning to you too, Cephy.”

“We know.”, Roman answered, before Remus continued. “We just dunno how to get down. Without, y’know, Dickface breaking a leg or something.”

“Hey!”

Remus stuck his tongue out at his twin.

Logan shook his head, a small smile on his lips, and continued with his coffee.

Virgil did the same, glancing over to the twins who had started bickering on top of everything else, from time to time.

“You know that our boyfriends are idiots, right?”

Logan looked at him with a thin smirk. “It’s interesting though, isn’t it?”

Before Virgil could answer, a shriek signaled Pattons arrival.

And, low and behold, a second later Patton stood in front of the twins, eyes wide, already in full dad mode.

Logan sighed, grabbed Virgils empty cup and went to get both of them a refill.

“What are you doing, kiddos? Do you have any idea how much could go wrong? You could hurt yourselves-“

Logan came back with the coffee, handing Virgil his cup, and both turned their attention back to the small group in front of them.

Remus was rolling his eyes hard enough to almost make them pop out of his face and Roman was suppressing a fond laugh.

Patton was talking, animated and fast, thinking out loud of how to get them down without one of the twins hurting or, like Remus said, breaking something.

He seemed ready to build himself up into a full on panic attack, when Janus smooth voice cut through the tension like a knife.

“Now see if you can do a flip.”

All heads turned to the snake who leaned against the door frame, smirk firmly in place, eyes twinkling with mischief.

For a few seconds, the living room was silent, until-

“Janus D. Sanders!”

The side in question ducked out of the room, his boyfriend high on his heels.

Virgil and Logan shared a look before a loud crash behind them caught their attention.

Roman was lying on top of Remus, limps a big mess, both twins groaning.

“We can’t do a flip.”, Remus announced.

“And we’re not gonna try again.”, Roman added.

Virgil sighed and Logan shook his head, a small smile on his face.

“We all know you’re going to try that until you can do it, Princey.”

Janus head appeared in the doorway for a second, out of breath but still grinning. “You owe me.”

And then he was gone again, Patton right behind him, lecturing him about safety and how to distinguish good ideas from bad ideas.

Virgil grinned, leaning back and sipping his coffee.

I worry that bc Shade, Boltie, et. al started out as Steven Universe fancharacters and bc I explore a lot of the same stuff through Lux and Rin’s relationship that I explored in previously Pearl and Steven-related meta people will assume it’s like…a reaction, or a gritty AU or something, and it’s absolutely not. Lux, Rin and Cephie are characters I’d had for years in various incarnations that had just never quite taken root in a specific project before this. Rin in particular is like a weird, prickly introvert and it’s really important to me that people who found me through SU stuff understand that they’re their own thing. I’ve talked to some of you about this but I see Steven as a hero of the heart, whereas like (to stay on our mutual cultural touchstones) Utena is a hero of the will and realism (even though she also does very much win through love) and I want Rin to kind of finish out the trifecta as a hero of the intellect and the imagination. The character they’re probably most inspired by is Alice, as in Lewis Carroll Alice. The premise of them is that they find themselves in an irrational, authoritarian setting that’s a bizarre satire of the adult world and they do find fun and adventure there but they also look it dead in the eye and say “that’s kind of stupid” when appropriate.

i havent played in a little while, so my villagers are going to be talking about how ive been missing...

starting off with my routine, i gave gwen a golden rose, and she gave me an orange-paint wall. i saw pippy too, but she got away before i could talk to her

bones isnt home...

sparro is at home crafting, but i already have the tulip surprise box recipe. ill be mailing it to my friend. i gave him a gold rose, and he gave me squared browline glasses

clay isnt home...

it must have rained between the last time i played and now, im cleaning up a bunch of white rose buds around my paths

wow, avery and cephalobot arent home... hope i at least see cephy around

savannah was at home, i gave her a gold rose and she gave me a dress shirt
