bro their whole RELATIONSHIP is a dirty secret dhdsjksdkl they are so star-crossed it's ridiculous. uhh i suppose alistair's thing for being tied up is probably a dirty secret in that he rly doesn't want anyone knowing about it shdjksdk but? i can't think of anything else?

I: intimacy:

they can be surprisingly romantic tbh. i mean. they sneak a lot of quickies during the blight, so it can't always be romantic, but alistair's a romantic soul at heart even if cedany isn't, so he'll usually make some effort, even if that's just having intimate moments like kissing cedany's shoulders while he undresses her. cedany's a little more concerned with speed, bc she's eager, but if alistair takes her hands while they're doin' it, she'll always squeeze them and kiss him to slow things down a little. i think things are a bit more worshipful on both their ends on their calling, so by that point it's super intimate. eye contact, constant touching, slowness, the whole shebang.

U: unfair:

alistair tries to tease. he rly does! cedany takes any excuse she can to tease him (even if other people are around), so he feels it's only fair he tries to do it too. but unfortunately he's not good at sticking to his guns there, bc he's just always so eager to touch and please her, so he'll crumble pretty easily. on her end, she's gotten him to beg numerous times bc even during a quickie, she can't help drawing things out a bit. she likes the power she has over him what can i say.

CHAPTER UPDATE: Golden Towers, ch 6

HA FINALLY thanks for some good edits by hobbit and encouragement from the chat, i have finished chapter 6 of golden towers, which completes that story. i got Ciri to Nilfgaard and back out again, LOL. Laid some groundwork for future stuff, and now we're off to get some Vergen backstory set up.

I really love that thats echoed in the ending of the series.

For anyone who isn't using the audiobook, i want you to understand how terrifying it is when it switches pov here. Because the whole book has been connie, for the prologue was her mum.

The fact that he has such a routine, hes been trained to hide his emotions from everyone including himself.

And the simple sentence of "he broke down" honestly cuts deeper than if it had been fully elaborated. Its so simple. And thats why its so powerful. He cant even cry and feel comfort. He has to retreat away from everyone and everything

professional integrity: ch. 13 of progress marches on

i know, i know, two chapters of two different fanfics in two hours. we're trying a new thing, guys. this episode: hurt, nora confronts saskia about her elopement. callaghan draws some quick conclusions. sean confronts his demons. jasper treats nora's wounds, and lets terrence in on an open secret. chapter comes in at appx. 3.7k content warning: this episode contains depictions of stitches and injury, as well as traumatic flashbacks, and mention of enslavement, torture, dismemberment, and burn injuries. like chapter 10, this one may not be for the faint of heart.

Jasper Lovelace was, by this point, well used to hearing women swear. Wynne did it all the time, and Hattie did sometimes too, when one of her dangerous pursuits went particularly foul.

He wasn't used to women swearing in American accents, which told him immediately that the noise he'd heard was Nora Gray, and sure enough, he turned the corner and found her with her arm propped against the wall, looking faintly sick.

i literally just finished shadow and bone and i am dutch so i get to shit on the dutch usage and pronunciation now hehehe >:D

i kept track of all names and words and stuff that i thought were dutch(-inspired) based on the word itself or context, then divided them into 3 categories: "yup, thats correct", "aaaaaalmost", and "wtf is this." (pronunciation will be thoroughly criticized later.)

(disclaimer i have only read a small part of SoC due to ✨life✨ so this is mostly based on the show)

the following words/names are completely believable, both in context and the name itself, + why:

tante Heleen - tante = aunt and Heleen is a very Dutch name; Dreesen is a real last name; Edam is a real place (their cheese is pretty good); Rozenstraat is a very generic and common street name; Edyck is the fancy old spelling of Edijk, which is probably either a place or someones name; Rietveld is a real last name; stroopwafels are real and oh so very good; Appelbroek, aka apple bottom jeans (or apple pants ig), could probably be a place name; Hiemstra is probably a real last name; Saskia is a very Dutch name; Lij could be a real place; Kooperom sounds so much like a real restaurant i actually would want to eat there now.

these seem like theyre actually dutch names at first glance, but its just a little... wrong. off. (again, + why.)

Ketterdam, as ketter means heretic (probably why its named that tbf), would never be a real place name. it sounds very weird; "goedemorgen, fantomen" was pronounced so wrong i had to take another listen to pick up what he was saying, + wed use "spoken" instead of "fantomen", especially in the context of surprise survivors; Jakob is fine, but Hertzoon would be spelled Hertszoon. even then, its still weird - -szoon was only used with the fathers name, and "hert" means deer, which isnt really a name; Henrik Van Poel would be correct if Van was spelled without a capital. its a "tussenvoegsel", an infix, which behaves a certain way in dutch, including not being capitalized when the whole name is written out; (B/D)uysberg (dont remember exactly) is almost correct, but idk, something feels just a little off about it, especially if it was Buysberg, which is what i think it was; Kaz would be spelled with an s and maybe a C depending on the full name, and Brekker is right but just doesnt feel like a real last name.

these arent dutch. these will never be dutch. no. (once again, + why.)

Kerch just doesnt sound or feel dutch, even when pronounced the dutch way (which it isnt in the show); stadwatch is a combo of dutch and english, which wed never do like this - just call it the stadswacht or the city watch, both sound better; Sturmhond is a combo of German and Dutch, make it Stormhond and id believe it (but i guess it was made up by a Ravkan, so its excusable); kruge is just not it.

alright. time to learn some dutch pronunciation and spelling rules.

all letters are pronounced, except, depending on context, for final -n.

g/ch = /x/ or /ɣ/ (make an s or z sound, roll your tongue back until its in the same spot you pronounce k), except for loan words.

ee = /eː/, or "ay".

y/ij/ei = /ɛi̯/ - closest thing i can think of is New Zealand "face" or Scottish "write". /aɪ/ ("I") would be acceptable.

uy/ui = /œy/, like finnish äy. nothing similar in English.

oo = /oː/, "oh".

oe = /u/, "oo" as in "loo" (not as in "book")

the rest is either right or depends on context.

"goedemorgen, fantomen". oh boy.

okay, so far we got /ɣud[e]m[o]rɣ[e] f[a]nt[o]m[e]/, where the letters in brackets are not yet explained and not necessarily obvious in pronunciation. from what i can recall, only one of them was pronounced correctly.

but lets start with stress patterns in dutch. the stress will always fall on the root of any given word, unless its a relatively recent loan word. in "goedemorgen", "morgen" is the root with the stress falling on "mor". they got this part right. in "fantomen" the root is "fantoom" with the stress falling on "toom". theres also secondary stress: "goedemorgen" is a compound of "goed" and "morgen", so it falls on "goe". in "fantomen", -en marks plural, and therefore secondary stress is on the other syllable of the root word: "fan".

if "e" isnt stressed in a word, its almost always /ə/ (e in "burden"). in this case, no e is stressed, so its all /ə/.

the first "o" is followed by multiple consonants, so its /ɔ/ (o in RP "sorry").

the second "o" is the shortened form of "oo".

"a" followed by multiple consonants, so its not the short form of "aa", and pronounced /ɑ/ (generic american english first a in "always")

this makes our sentence pronounced as /ˌɣudəˈmɔrɣə(n) ˌfɑnˈtoːmə(n)/.

Six of Crows Reread - Ch. 22

Chapter 22: Kaz

"In years to come people would call the outbreak of firepox that struck Ketterdam the Queen’s Lady Plague, after the ship believed to have brought the contagion to the city. It hit the crowded slums of the Barrel hardest. Bodies piled up in the streets, and sickboats moved through the canals, using long shovels and hooks to tumble corpses onto their platforms and haul them out to the Reaper ’s Barge for burning."

It's interesting how much of what makes Kaz Kaz is the fact that he uses his weaknesses as a strength and tries to see them not as a hindrance but as a way to go above and beyond and make a name for himself in a city that treated him so cruelly. In this specific part, it strikes me as interesting how it was the Queen's Lady Plague that took away his brother from him, but it is that same thing that allows him to get a hand over Pekka and Van Eck in the end. And it is because he went through that experience that he was able to later on come up with the plague idea that ended up working not only for his own benefit, but for his crows' benefit too.

"Kaz tried to pull Jordie from the water. His body was covered in the little blooming sores that gave the firepox its name, his skin white and bruised. Kaz thought of the little wind-up dog, of drinking hot chocolate on the bridge. He thought that heaven would look like the kitchen of the house on Zelverstraat and smell like hutspot cooking in the Hertzoons’ oven. He still had Saskia’s red ribbon.

He could give it back to her. They would make candies out of quince paste. Margit would play the piano, and he could fall asleep by the fire. He closed his eyes and waited to die.

Kaz expected to wake in the next world, warm and safe, his belly full, Jordie beside him. Instead, he woke surrounded by corpses. He was lying in the shallows of the Reaper ’s Barge, his clothes soaked through, skin wrinkled from the damp. Jordie’s body was beside him, barely recognisable, white and swollen with rot, floating on the surface like some kind of gruesome deep sea fish."

It breaks my heart to read this, because it shows how hopeful and wholesome little Kaz was! He was dreaming of being in heaven with Jordie, and have enough foor to eat, and make candies with Saskia, and then you compare that Kaz with present-day Kaz and it is such a stark difference. And it puts into perspective how much Kaz lost that day, not only his brother, but also his faith on humanity almost? And then it makes sense why he makes fun of Inej's faith and her goodness despite everything she's been through, because it almost is the polar opposite of what he got out of his horrible situation.

"He hated that Inej had seen him this way, that anyone had, but on the heels of that thought came another: Better it should be her. In his bones, he knew that she would never speak of it to anyone, that she would never use this knowledge against him. She relied on his reputation. She wouldn’t want him to look weak. But there was more to it than that, wasn’t there? Inej would never betray him. He knew it. Kaz felt ill. Though he’d trusted her with his life countless times, it felt much more frightening to trust her with this shame."

Nothing specific to add here, just the fact that he has spent so much time and effort maintaining his facade of being strong, that it is frightening and disconcerting being able to trust someone with something he's ashamed of. And him knowing that he can trust her? Even though he's not ready to admit any feelings he might have for her, he can at least admit this to himself.

“You okay?” Inej asked, and Kaz felt himself drawn towards her voice like water rolling downhill."

Omg??! He's so not ready to admit any feelings yet, but he felt himself drawn to her voice like water rolling downhill??! My boy is down bad!!

"They entered a chamber where an old woman sat with her hands chained, flanked by guards. Her eyes were vacant. As each prisoner approached, the woman gripped his or her wrist.

A human amplifier. Kaz knew Nina had worked with them when she’d been scouring the Wandering Isle for Grisha to join the Second Army. They could sense Grisha power by touch, and he’d seen them hired on at high stakes card games to make sure none of the players were Grisha. Someone who could tamper with another player ’s pulse or even raise the temperature in a room had an unfair advantage. But the Fjerdans used them for a different purpose – to make sure no Grisha breached their walls without being identified."

I really hate this. I understand the rationale of why Fjerdans do it, but then it also plays into the "Fjerdans are hypocrites". Because they hate Grisha and they call them unnatural and witches and so on, but then they use their powers to build the Ice Court and detect other Grishas and later on also to create an army under jurda parem to try and defeat Ravka? Either you hate them and want to kill them, or you don't. It goes to show, then, that Fjerdans only wanted power and if Grisha (even though they hated them) were a means to obtain it, then they were going to use them.

"As they were led through an arch on the left, Kaz glimpsed Inej disappearing into the opposite arch with the other female prisoners. He felt a twinge in his chest, and with a disturbing jolt, he realised it was panic. She’d been the one to wake him from his stupor in the cart. Her voice had brought him back from the dark; it had been the tether he gripped and used to drag himself back to some semblance of sanity."

I can only wonder how Kaz will be doing when she leaves for the seas. I know we catch a brief glimpse of that in the KoS duology, but since we didn't get any Kaz chapters there, I'm sure there's more to it than the brief things we get to see. And I'm sure he's not having a great time without her in Ketterdam.

"None of it mattered. For now, Kaz had to focus on the plan and finding Yul-Bayur. He glanced at the others. Wylan looked as if he was ready to wet himself. Helvar appeared grim as always. Jesper just grinned and whispered, “Well, we’ve managed to get ourselves locked into the most secure prison in the world. We’re either geniuses or the dumbest sons of bitches to ever breathe air.”

I think you're both, Jesper. And every adventure from here on out is equal parts because you're geniuses but also the dumbest people on the planet.

"More Suli platitudes, but somehow even the memory of her voice helped. He was better than this. He had to be. Not just for Jordie, but for his crew.

He’d brought these people here. He’d brought Inej here. It was his job to bring them out again."

Just the thought of her voice helps him? Okay, so he is down for her very very bad.

On another note, I love how he separates Inej from "these people". Like she's in a separate category from everyone else, almost as if she's not only part of his crew, but also his girl (like we see him say / admit later on in the book).

So that's it for chapter 22. Next up, we have Jesper dealing with the fact that they're trapped in a high security prison.

💋 how affectionate are they with their friends? their family? their romantic partner(s) (if they have any)? are they more physical or emotional when it comes to displaying their affection? why?

she’s not very physically affectionate at all, which is surprising given how touch-starved she is dhdsjkdsjk. her and vuren were sort of demonstrative with their affection when he was her padawan (and even after, actually) and they often hugged in greeting etc., but since him, she hasn’t been very touchy. especially not with quinlan (for hopefully obvious reasons??? shdsjkds). she’s more physical with obi-wan when they see each other, and he’s probably the person she touches the most, but it’s not like they go around holding hands all the time.

she’s more emotional when expressing her affection i guess? she’s definitely more likely to voice affection than anything else (‘stay safe out there’, ‘you matter to me’, ‘we cant lose you’, that kind of thing shjdsjkdsjk). siv’s also big on protection as a love language hsjdsjk so there’s that.

🌹 how easy is it for them to connect with others and make friends? on the flip side, how easy is it for them to make an enemy of someone? are they the kind of person who hangs around the food table at a party and never talks to anyone, or are they the type who can talk to anyone?

ok this is complicated, because it’s very easy for sivala to connect with others, but less so for her to make friends. she’s empathetic to a force-enhanced degree, by which i mean: she can rly infer a lot about someone’s nature by their presence in the force and how it appears — unless, of course, they have no presence (like palpatine pre-empire). but she also doesn’t trust very easily and comes off a bit intense in conversation, so she’s... not the best at making friends. she’s not cruel or mean to anyone, she’s just... intimidating. especially if she isn’t bothering to turn on the charm, which she usually only makes use of when she deems it ‘necessary’.

she’s charming enough that she can talk to anyone if she wants to (or feels she has to, for that matter), but in her most natural setting, she’s a bit more of an introvert. she likes observing conversations more than she does partaking in them; she gets all the noise of companionship and none of the attention :)

🍑 where is your OC’s favourite place to relax or calm down? recount a story of their time spent in this place! what makes it so special to them?

honestly? just hyperspace shsdjkdsjk. she feels her safest in hyperspace bc — although she’s not much of a flier — from what i understand it’s pretty unlikely she’d be attacked there??? dshjsdjksdjk the girl has severe ptsd and hypervigilance idk what else to say abt that. she sleeps her best in hyperspace for this reason, too! 

she’s not very attached to her apartment on daiyu (and in fact has a bag packed at all times, just in case she has to disappear) but the hustle and bustle of the planet outside soothes her, i suppose? sitting in silence too long is painful for her. i guess she might feel a bit comforted on jabiim, too (probably moreso than daiyu, bc she’s having to hide less about herself) but she’s still more alert than most people, even there.

😊 what can make your OC smile even when they’re feeling down? what cheers them up and makes everything feel better for them? is your OC generally a happy person and do they enjoy making others smile? what about your OC makes others happy?

🌸 what does your OC’s voice sound like? their laugh? are they good at singing? do they have an accent?

sivala’s got a pretty husky voice! low, calm; she doesn’t rise and fall a lot in intonation, unless she’s trying to manipulate someone, when it might become sort of... melodic and soothing. her laugh is quiet and private, more like a huff of air, but some of the men under her command during the clone wars swore they’d drunk with her before, and then at least her laugh was throaty and rich. louder.

accent-wise, she’s chandrilan through-and-through, bc she could already talk by the time the jedi brought her to coruscant. very queen’s english is how i’d describe it; crisp and enunciated. like keira knightley, without the weird thing she does with her teeth/lower jaw DHJDKSSJD

who fell for who first ( if applicable ): taylor fell for saskia first. taylor is the biggest romantics of romantics.

where their first date was and what it was like: probably something cute and outside. like a picnic and a walk in the park or something like that.

where their usual ‘date spot’ is ( if applicable ): i don’t think they have one. they like to be spontaneous and do different things.

who’s more protective: saskia for sure.

how long it is before they sleep together ( can be as in ‘had sex’ or as in ‘shared a bed’ ): probably four or five months because taylor needed to be sure that saskia wasn’t just going to be a fling as her last significant other really hurt her badly.

if they argue about anything: yes of course they argue about things. mostly just bickering. most of the time not about anything big.

who leaves more marks ( lipstick, hickeys, scratchmarks etc. ): saskia for sure. but nothing too much as taylor doesn’t like to have marks left on her body. especially where others could potentially see them. she is a softy okay.

who steals whose clothes and how often: taylor definitely steals saskia’s clothes more often. she thinks saskia has cooler style than she does.

how they cuddle ( spooning? facing each other? ): facing one another. taylor’s head  laying on saskia’s chest.

what their favourite nonsexual activity is: going on walks or doing something active. maybe even cooking together.

how long they stay mad at each other: probably not very long. but saskia stays mad at taylor for a longer period of time than taylor does.

what their usual coffee / tea orders are: taylor likes decaf tea and saskia takes her coffe black.

if they ever have any children together: they adopted saskia’s brother’s daughter. it’s new but taylor wouldn’t change being the little girls mother for anything.

if they have any special pet names for each other: saskia probably has more pet names for taylor than the other way around so you should ask HER about them - hehe.

if they ever split up and / or get back together: they did split up. well more so go on a break because taylor had a shock when saskia asked her to marry her. they are now back together though and focusing on getting taylor’s magic back. taylor doesn’t foresee ever breaking up with saskia again and knows now that she can trust the surgeon with anything.

what their shared living space is like ( messy? clean? what kind of decor? ): taylor keeps everything pretty organized except her magical spaces. those kind of end up becoming cluttered with herbs and other things. saskia is the messy one who leaves clothes everywhere and dishes places and then taylor will lecture her about it. but cutely of course.

what their first christmas / hanukkah / etc as a couple was like: super cute and festive. they even had adopted saskia’s brother kid already so they got to enjoy the festivities with them. taylor introduced saskia to all the witchy yule things she did and saskia showed taylor her traditions as well. it was magical.

what their names are in each other’s phones: taylor doesn’t do that stuff? no idea what saskia’s nickname for taylor would be alsdkfjdas;fj. sorry.

if they have any ‘couple traditions’ ( buying a new mug for their collection every year? baking every friday evening? ): game night every sunday and reading to one another every other night. also going on walks almost daily. taylor wants to work up to them being able to run together.

who falls asleep first and who wakes up first: taylor. she is a morning person and loves being up with the sunrise. saskia is also up early but that’s mostly just because of her job.

who’s the big spoon / little spoon: saskia refuses to let taylor be the big spoon even though she would like to be it sometimes.

who hogs the bathroom: taylor does for sure. she likes her bubble baths.

who kills the spiders / takes them outside: taylor. taylor likes all animals even bugs. saskia is a wuss when it comes to the spiders.

Why did Saskia even leave the notes? Wouldn't it have been better if there was nothing suspicious going on so the princess's guard would be down?
