Lisa says: Hey Freehold Writers! Here’s the initial challenge for our group:

Each day for seven days, write down something positive that happened that day, and at the end of the week, report back here. 

On your mark, get set, GO!

Day one, 7/25:

Jim says:

Kathy says: (I'm going to be a rebel and write here as I go.) The best thing today is probably this is my wedding anniversary (1987), but also my house had electricity restored after a post-storm 75-hour blackout. But what made me most proud was a library patron said, "I can tell you put a lot of work into this [children's] program." After putting my foot in my mouth a couple of times earlier, and just not feeling well as I rebound from an illness, this was a welcome bit of feedback.

Lisa says: I went to Writers’ Group and had a fantastic time!

Day two, 7/26:

Jim says:

Kathy says: Well, I’ve been remiss in writing down what the best thing of each day has been, so, here I am, at the end of the week, reconstructing that as well as I can. I will say the best thing today was having good news from a ophthalmologist. Though not surprising, news that my recent shingles attack hasn’t damaged my eye is about as good as it gets. I’ll take it.

Lisa says: My husband adores his job and hasn’t had health issues since he quit the previous job. 

Day three, 7/27:

Jim says:

Kathy says: Enjoyed a few hours at the Monmouth County Fair. Saw many friends, but the best part was had a nice time with my daughter Diane. 

Lisa says: I think I finally signed up for the correct supplement to Medicare. I may actually be able to go to my Oncologist in August! And get my shots. Two months is too long to wait for shots.

Day four, 7/28:

Jim says:

Kathy says: Didn’t go to church today (still recovering from shingles illness, and giving myself extra chances to rest). Hubby took me to Denny’s for brunch. While that’s not such a hot experience at first glance, it was nice to spend some time out of the house with my husband. 

Lisa says: I’m so grateful to have parents that I truly like spending time with. Moreover, I actually like my mother-in-law. It can be done folks.

Day five, 7/29: 

Jim says:

Kathy says: Today’s best thing? I didn’t feel well all through the morning, but rallied in the afternoon. Sounds kind of lame, but with the back-and-forth progression of my recovery, “feeling better” is a very good thing. 

Lisa says: Even though I have had my shots in two months, I feel healthy. I  can get my PET scan in August (hopefully) and the results will prove that I’m still in remission.

Day six, 7/30:

Jim says:

Kathy says: I FINISHED A BOOK! One I was reading. I’m a tragically slow reader. 

Lisa says: We have had a new door now for days and it still closes!

Day seven, 7/31:

Jim says:

Kathy says: I had 22 “big kid” volunteers today, including two who were brand-new to the program. Working with these young people is always going to rank as a “best thing” for me.

Lisa says: It’s almost like living with a new person. My husband comes home happy from work everyday now and regales me with stories of the road. And, I actually completed this challenge!

When I think about planning a trip, I generally start by looking at a map to pick a country an ocean apart from little Chapel Hill, North Carolina. I’ve had some fun trips that started like that; for example, after much clicking and dragging and zooming on Google Maps, Charles and I settled on a trip to South Africa about this time last year. But for Mom’s challenge, I thought I’d look at this side of the ocean. I decided to stick with North America here because really, I haven’t explored very much of it, and I presume that Mom doesn’t get as excited about sketchy hostels, long flights, mosquito nets, and language barriers as I do.

Thinking domestically, I wanted to plan a trip in a region that would be new to us both. Conversations with friends who have recently headed out west have reminded me that I’ve entirely neglected the West Coast in my travels. So looking at that part of the country, I eliminated California (given Mom and Dad’s recent trip there) and settled on the Pacific Northwest. “The PNW,” as I think the cool kids call it, gets rave reviews from my friends for its beauty and for the aggressively outdoors-y and casual nature of its residents. Considering my and Mom’s interests, it actually sounds pretty darn perfect… until you hear about the not-so-sunny seasons. With that in mind, I present to you this mid-summer PNW Porch-ready road trip (PNW PR RT) plan, featuring Washington state and a little BC:

Days 1-2: Seattle
