Hey! Well everyone's going OPLA crazy, so 1091 might just fly under the radar, which is a shame, cos' it's a good chapter! I usually only do these commentaries on the chapters with Law, Kid, characters I really like (and I like the Straw Hats, but you know where my heart lies!), or small things that catch my attention like:

Is that Chuji (from Wano) helping Sanji out with the cooking for the crew? AND did

Doflamingo and one of his clones pop in to spice up the party? AND where

are Robin and Franky? Love seeing Jinbei helping out with the cooking, and Brook and Chopper politely enjoying themselves. Chapter's title is Sentomaru!

So the Pacifista and the weaponised sea beasts are taking on the navy (and the Vegapunks don't know that their defenses have been breached yet. The sea beasts are cute in a Big Mom way:

But never fear because

Doll is here! And another of the new vice admirals who was to the right of those two frames above. Beating up sea beasts, I think, and making their way to the Pacifistas (Doll already arrived!).

It seems that

if Kizaru hadn't breached the defences that the navy wouldn't stand too good a chance against the Robo beasts, OR, if Kizaru was with them, maybe they would. Also, love Usopp with his sniper specs (or whatever they are).

Also, it seems that Vegapunk is pretty blind to

the weakness in the control hierarchy. As shown earlier with the whole seraphim debacle, it's too easy for one person in the chain to wrest control. Then again, there is or was an assumption that everyone is trusted. Going out of order, but Jay Garcia Saturn Kizaru saying (thanks @darkspock)

that it would be good to keep Vegapunk alive (he is alluding to Vegapunk here, as Kizaru confirms he's set to kill him in the next panel) in the same way Jay Garcia Saturn says that

it was a shame to lose the weaponised beasts, and that losing them, and ultimately Vegapunk, because they are the less valuable or even dangerous assets, show how far removed he is from humanity. BUT, he does want to keep one Vegapunk! (Edit in: And I wonder now if Kizaru is talking about Sentomaru)

York! Love me a good villain. Ahhh. And also the power station, and Punk Records cannot become collateral damage. Elimination fo the rest of Vegapunk is the top priority. I still think the Victoria Punk might have a link to all of this too! (just from the name).

Anyway, back to the linear storyline. Before Sentomaru

bites the dust, Usopp, Nami and Brook sight Kizaru, and Brook mentions Sabaody. It's not forgotten, throughout the piece.

AND, I just had a thought, they weren't taken out by Kizaru this round, far from it, but Kid and Law (and all the other supernova, other than Bonney, Luffy and Zoro) were taken out by other forces before they got the chance to flee from (or fight) Kizaru again. It's a good way of showing the high stakes and who is left in the game. (Usopp still has his specs).

So Vegapunk is not aware of Kizaru's determination to let Sentomaru fight from his own morals, and Sentomaru's resolve to protect Vegapunk at all costs. The very small background story (we had some before) is sweet, as always, especially the relationship between "Uncle" Kizaru and Santomaru.

And speaking of cute and hoodlum and maybe awkward, but so at home in one's skin to not even be aware of it:

Stella Vegapunk (Atlas too?). But York is unaffected, and won't give up the code! (And Usopp has lost his glasses).

What if the "Old Friends" that Jay Garcia Saturn Kizaru refers to were

this treacherous bastard, and his now bubble-wrapped

colleague, Kaku!

Smart move on Sanji's part, but let's reel it back a little:

Rob Lucci takes Stussy out (and Oda did say in the most recent SBS that he finally learnt how to draw bums, so he's taking every opportunity to draw bums. Butt only female bums, apparently!) And declares:

that he and Kizaru are besties and everyone's days are numbered, BUT, what if Jay Garcia Saturn Kizaru was talking about Rob Lucci (and Kaku) when he said it was a shame to lose old friends. Lucci is one of those kinds of villains who should be on the most-hated list (like Spandam and Walpole). He's good looking for sure, and CP9/0 have sad stories, but dammit!

Also, Big News Morgans is not gonna be happy about Stussy. But Sanji's move against Kaku above was so swift and cool. And it's Nami declaring Stussy Chan, isn't it? I don't think it's Sanji, due to the positioning of the text bubble, but I could be wrong.

This guy (Zoro)

is on the offensive (looks great!). And so is

this guy! Also love that Luffy uses 'we' to describe the whole crew (the whole generation?) being stronger.

And Santomaru's Japanese attack names and their meanings, apparently won't appear in Viz:

I'm sure I've missed a ton, but there you go! Oh, where's Robin? (and Chopper). Were they going to the Sunny? Also, these two scenes were superrr cute! Bonney and Luffy should definitely be besties.

I mentioned in my tags on this post that I felt like Luffy’s “entrance” in Chapter 1091 reminded me heavily of Rayleigh’s entrance in Chapter 511 during Sabaody Arc.

And while it isn’t a direct 1:1, I do feel like it was on purpose, especially when you combine it with the fact that multiple characters in this chapter pointed out that this fight is similar to what happened in Sabaody. Only this time they don’t need help from Rayleigh, or anyone else. Like Luffy says at the end, they’re much stronger than they were back then.

Brooks little comment about reliving bad memories. Ah I cried. The crew has really come so far! This chapter was excellent. Just amazing chapter after amazing chapter. So sad we have a break next week but at least we have the live action which I'm definitely getting more excited about.

Chapter 1091 Spoiler

I just wish for a great Zoro&Sanji moment. Like, Luffy is fighting Kizaru, Zoro is fighting Lucci (which shouldn't be hard) and then Saturn turns up and just beats Sanji to a pulp? And the other Strawhats try their best to stop him but he's just too strong? And Zoro sees it and nearly loses it? And he finishes Lucci off like it's nothing (and let's be honest, it should be nothing for the Monster Trio) and races to help Sanji and it's emotional and shit and Sanji is nearly dying and then they both fight Saturn together and we see them team up for real and it's glorious.

Echoes of The Fool and The Hierophant

1091 is out! Somewhat slow set up chapter though sticks close to and plays extremely well with the kind of progression I want to see right now.

I hear chapter 913 a-calling, though first, need to lay out some groundwork. 1091 has Luffy confident after his near blunder with giving out info last chapter, Kizaru/the Marines clash with their own forces, and Kizaru passes through the barrier to go after the Straw Hat captain. Very similar progression, from a story structure perspective, to the brief encounter we had with Hawkins, early on during Wano. An encounter, infighting, then being pursued.

Alright, core chapter thoughts. Happenings in the dome have been reestablished, so it makes sense that a chapter dedicated to set up is needed for the sake of transitioning into the escape proper. Even though 1091 felt a tad slow with getting to Luffy's clash at the end, we're there now.

Overall, the pace still seems fairly rapid, which gives me hope that the barrier will be down and that Luffy's and Kizaru's skirmish will conclude relatively soon, maybe 1-2 chapters, so we can focus all attention on escaping.

A major highlight this chapter is seeing Nami, Usopp, and Brook watching the events happening off the shore, via the snail screen, being the same events that we as readers just saw as well. I enjoy it just for how meta it is. More of that please.

The most exciting part is how well this chapter sets up possibly paralleling the remaining six pages of chapter 913, being those which focus on the result of Hawkins drawing the Hierophant upright. I'm looking forward to 1092!

Okay, my chapter commentary on chapter 1091, which I thought might give folks oversaturated on you know what, a break is NOT showing! I think it's cos' I save them as drafts when I'm working on them before posting? Who knows. It's under a cut, so that it shouldn't spoil any one. But I did the whole chapter—something I haven't done for a while—and writing those mofos takes time! So here, have a link!

egghead spoilers (ch. 1069 - 1093)

i know there's still no direct reaction from zoro about luffy's gear 5/nika transformation, but i can't stop thinking about this little crumb of interaction between them on egghead:

luffy cheerfully asking if zoro needs any help with fighting rob lucci, and he's clearly still in his gear 5

and zoro telling him to focus on his own fight with kizaru, so at least with a corner of his eye he must have seen him.

the reactions we have seen so far of other people seeing luffy gear 5 were especially of surprise, shock, awe and wonder. with yamato in wano telling the strawhats (minus zoro, again, because he was unconscious beside luffy, healing), how incredible sight it was, to see luffy during the battle (ch. 1051):

on egghead - jimbei and chopper were with luffy when he first started fighting rob lucci (ch. 1069)

and then most of the strawhats - nami, usopp, sanji, robin and franky - who were watching luffy fight in gear 5 while vegapunk was explaining what/who nika is to many people (ch. 1069) - and even sanji was pointing out "he's just luffy, you know, a moron (affectionate)?", but their reactions were still very surprised (obviously).

then there's chapter 1091, with rob lucci trying to attack vegapunk, and zoro pushing him away from the lab,

and luffy goes to gear 5 and giant form when kizaru attacks, ch. 1093.

the only small moment where zoro might have seen luffy (especially bc he went to giant form), was here and... nothing.

just.. "fight your own battle, i will handle this one" - and tbh i love this "no reaction" (so far).

(there is a certain similarity here to the arlong park arc - where nojiko wants to tell them about nami's history, and both luffy and zoro don't care for it to hear it - the words or past weren't important to them, not as much as nami's decisions and actions, ch. 77.)

so it's kinda similar here on egghead with zoro not stopping to look and to realize how luffy changed - it's not important for him what he looks like, what he symbolizes for other people.

it's important to him what he does. zoro is always about the actions. and it's still luffy to him, the man who will be the pirate king, and the only man he decided to follow and call him his captain. someone he can trust and respect, and at the same time someone zoro can call out to keep his focus in front of him on the opponent and on the future (like in enies lobby, punk hazard, and even here on egghead ..).

zoro can focus on fighting rob lucci (and possibly keep him occupied until it's time to go), and knows he can count on the others and luffy to fight the other battles. (just like later on luffy can count on his crew, and focus on fighting saturn & kizaru.)

(i'm sure there will be a reaction in later chapters, especially when he's right there and we see other strawhats beside luffy. but it's interesting that zoro (and brook)'s reaction to gear 5 is still missing on the page. im wondering if brook heard some legends and stories too, and what they mean to him.)

Chapter 1091 (spoilers)

The way he always handles things with her with such care, even if it's just to take her weapon in the middle of a sudden attack…🥺

On the other hand, it has been pointed out that Sanji's reaction to seeing Stussy seriously injured is very striking. What any reader would expect from Sanji, myself included, is a reaction out of anger upon witnessing such thing.

In the same arc, we did have Sanji twice getting really angry at those.

Only that women weren't perhaps the factor that would make the difference.

With Nami, he really lost his temper because S-Shark attacked her, to the point he activated his Germa genes out of wrath.

Perhaps it is too soon to talk, and perhaps there it'll be an explanation to this. I don't want to make it especially shippy because I like Sanji the way he is, protecting all women and going wherever they are if they are in danger. But it is still striking to see the differences in the way he sees Nami ≠ women.

We didn't see what happened in between, but Robin was injured too during those events - that's why Chopper was treating her. Now Stussy, who has been seriously injured right in front of him, is not enough to elicit Sanji's wrath.

I may be overanalyzing. But they are still details that stand out a lot.
