Welcome to the 'Best Character with [X] surname' polls!
This is where I take several characters from different Chinese media (mostly cnovels and cdrama) and run a poll on which one is the 'best'. What does best mean? It's up to you! Whether you love them, are intrigued by their characters, love to hate them, or they're your '2 second blorbos whose personality you made up wholesale', these are all reasons for you to vote for your favs!
NB: the surnames are not exactly the same in all the cases, as often they will be a different character. I am, however, grouping them all together otherwise things got more complicated.
If you can't find a surname, it's because I couldn't find enough candidates (at least 3 from 3 distinct medias) to compete. Feel free to submit candidates!
I will be posting several polls at a time, so do come back and check this masterpost to remember which polls are ongoing, who the winners are, and who's coming up next!
Currently ongoing polls:/Chao/Xin/Ran/Sang/Miao/Cang/Yao/Zang/Chong/Nangong/Kong/Hai/Deng/Kang

I need to know more about “SVSSS - Baby Brother Liu Qingge” bc I love tiny and very deadly baby LQG
I have a 3k-ish Shang Qinghua POV that was supposed to be the introduction to this fic concept! So... ah... baby Liu Qingge does not appear in this, but you can see the setup for how an 8yo-ish Liu Qingge was supposed to be introduced. My hope is that this will someday become a "Shang Qinghua and Shen Jiu go on a mission with Baby Brother Liu Qingge" one shot.
-cut-
Shang Qinghua didn't really have the words to describe what it was like having Proud Immortal Demon Way's characters finally come into his second life.
He didn't have the words to describe a lot of his transmigration experience, honestly! His words had described a lot of this world already, haha, hadn't they? Sometimes a person just had to put up with it and keep going.
And then excuse himself later to go scream into a pillow! Many times!
At first, life was just him in a body that didn't fit and strange memories that slipped between his fingers like sand. His memories of a past life had settled eventually, the System finally came fully online, and his relationship with his second family was fully fucked forever. That was fine, though! That was fine! With some unsolicited prodding from his System, he left to go seek his fortune soon enough and he never had to talk to his character's birth parents or siblings again.
But Airplane Shooting Towards The Sky had never said much of anything about Shang Qinghua’s family or home village, besides saying that the man had dreamed of more than his mediocre origins, so everything had been unfamiliar and original and real. Getting to Cang Qiong Mountain Sect, which he had described in great detail, was a real headfuck. There were no words for the experience of recognizing things that he’d written in another life.
He saw the glistening rainbow bridge and the intimidating sect entrance and the majestic meeting hall on Qiong Ding, and he nearly screamed. He definitely squawked. His vision got really fuzzy for a minute there and he had to sit down on the ground before he fell over. What the fuck?! What the fuck?! He’d made a world! The System had really made a world out of his web-novel! He was really stuck in Proud Immortal Demon Way!
There were upsides and downsides to joining Cang Qiong Mountain Sect. Downsides included: the hard training, the harder workload, the dangerous missions, the disrespect towards An Ding Peak, and being surrounded by arrogant and foolish teenagers looking to look down on someone. It was really something else to look some of them in the eye and think, "Bro, I don’t know your name, but you kind of owe your existence to me. Could you stop being such a fucking asshole about leaving your chores for me to do?! Respect your father!"
Upsides included: actually becoming a cultivator (pretty cool, even though the work of cultivation sucked more often than not), better living accommodations and food, and actually getting to see some of the cooler places, plants, monsters, and magic that were a part of his world. Sure, carting a monster corpse brought in by Bai Zhan Peak to Xi Jiao Peak for butchering was smelly and heavy and altogether miserable, but seeing an impossible animal was still kind of incredible. If this unwilling Shang Qinghua could stop being pushed around and stepped on long enough to appreciate the upsides, he’d really appreciate it!
It was interesting and infuriating to log the differences between what he’d imagined, what he’d written, and what the System had created. What sort of author described every single object in every single room? Who had time for that? Who wanted to read that? The System had filled in all the living details of An Ding Peak - the Leisure Houses, the training grounds, the storehouses, the warehouses, the kitchens, the lesson halls, the leisure gardens, the farming fields, the livestock fields, the stables, the cart lot, the water supply, the sewage systems, and so on - so that people could actually live here. Airplane Shooting Towards The Sky as an author had done many things worthy of complaint and criticism, but wasting his readers’ time with sewage systems was not one of them!
The System had also filled in all the little details and decorations - the paintings on the walls of sect history, the detailing on the rooftops supposedly offering protections from dream demons, the chipped and faded paint of old storehouses that disciples would be tasked with replacing, the statues in the fields to scare off scavengers, the carvings on the doors meant to reduce resentful energy, the childish etchings of bored students the surface of the lesson hall desks, the old bench where the An Ding Peak Lord liked to sit and eat flatcakes - so that it really seemed like people had built this place and maintained it and added to it for generations.
Shang Qinghua had his quibbles here and there. Sometimes the System had made choices that he objected to! He would have done it differently if it had asked him, the author, to contribute. He really felt as though the System should have asked him to clarify the plot holes and the gaps in detail, instead of choosing precedence randomly or building off random implications taken way too literally.
Sometimes he found out that the System had built things out of throwaway lines that Shang Qinghua himself had completely forgotten about. It turned out that Ku Xing Peak made a lot of purification tools and containment vessels because Airplane had offhandedly mentioned that this was their specialty, and now Shang Qinghua had to cart around delicate ceramics to be sold to city merchants or other cultivation sects. He never would have dared to write that if he’d known that it would one day in another life be his job to do things like take inventory and chase down signatures for successful deliveries.
Places, items, and creatures were one thing, but logging the differences between the people he met and the characters he’d created was something else. At first it was okay, because he was surrounded by nameless An Ding Peak nobodies - his fellow disciples, their teachers, the hardworking managers and merchants, even the peak lord - none of them had ever mattered in Proud Immortal Demon Way. If Airplane had been the one to name any of them, he didn’t recognize the names or remember them.
Then he met Yue Qingyuan.
Wow, it was a worse headfuck than first arriving at Cang Qiong Mountain Sect, when Shang Qinghua finally realized that this was the young version of one of his actual characters. It took him a minute. As a lowly outer disciple, Shang Qinghua hadn’t received “Qinghua” as a name yet (his name was Houhua, not that anyone ever used it) and the future Yue Qingyuan was still called Yue Qi.
Shang Qinghua was fourteen at the time. Yue Qingyuan must have been around the same age, so he didn’t strike the tall and handsome figure of the sect leader Airplane had described. The boy was broad, but actually a little short. He had freckles. He had acne.
But he also had a warm smile that seemed to go all the way to his eyes when he offered to give Shang Qinghua directions to the right office on Qiong Ding. He had a steady hand when he helped Shang Qinghua up, after the An Ding disciple had suddenly tripped over nothing upon being introduced. Yue Qingyuan - Yue Qi - walked him to the right office and did his best to make small talk, friendly and kind even though Shang Qinghua was having difficulty stringing more than a few words together in his shock.
Even then, it was obvious that the boy was developing the calm surety and the social charm that would make him a greatly admired sect leader someday! It was all Shang Qinghua could do not to blurt out: “Holy shit, you’re REAL?!” Which would be closely followed by: “Hey, is Shen Qingqiu really real too?!” And then maybe closely followed by: “FUCK!!!”
As the years went by, Shang Qinghua met more of Proud Immortal Demon Way’s characters, and it was weird every time. None of them were exactly like he was expecting. He kept expecting… well… he kept expecting them to look like the fanart, like flawless character models, more or less. Instead, he kept getting… people.
Wei Qingwei, head disciple of the sword-focused Wan Jian Peak, was also shorter than he was expecting, kind of stout, with a wide face and a wider smile. Airplane Shooting Towards The Sky had apparently had the man crack a few jokes upon his rare appearances in the web-novel, usually during tense situations, as he was reminded by the System upon thinking to himself: “Why is this guy LIKE THIS?!” So, because of just a few lines, the real Wei Qingwei had a relentless sense of humor and loved telling jokes.
Upon their first meeting, when Shang Qinghua was fifteen and had been sent over to help renovate some Wan Jian dormitories, fifteen-year-old Wei Qingwei had pretended to fumble a sword and, using a packet of dye and a sleight of hand, made it look like he’d accidentally cut off his own hand at the wrist. Of course Shang Qinghua had screamed and panicked! Anyone would panic! But Wei Qingwei had laughed at him and said, “Got you! Shang-Shidi, the sword wasn’t even unsheathed!” Asshole!
Qi Qingqi, the head disciple of Xian Shu Peak, was much taller than he was expecting. Apparently Airplane had once described a group of some of the peak lords by saying something like: “Each one of them was like a giant to young Luo Binghe.” That group had included Qi Qingqi. The System apparently had taken that to mean that Qi Qingqi was of a height with the likes of Yue Qingyuan and Shen Qingqiu. Shang Qinghua discovered this adaptational choice when he was almost sixteen, when this giraffe-like girl came to An Ding Peak to complain about an order someone along the pipeline had dropped completely, and he accidentally found himself (still waiting on a really good growth spurt) eye-level with Qi Qingqi’s chest.
Airplane had apparently once said in Proud Immortal Demon Way that Qian Cao Peak Lord Mu Qingfang appeared a little older than his colleagues, by which he’d probably meant that the man was just tired or something, but this head disciple Mu Qingfang appeared to have ten years on all the other head disciples. Which was good! Shang Qinghua approved of their future head healer not being a teenager and having more training!
On the bad side of things, Airplane had also once said in Proud Immortal Demon Way that the Zui Xian Peak Lord Zhang Qingyan liked his drink too much. This was the peak specializing in alcohol, so it had seemed to make sense! It was supposed to be funny, if anything! Well, at sixteen, Shang Qinghua found out that the System had focused too much on the “too much” part of that statement and now the head disciple of Zui Xian Peak was pretty clearly a budding alcoholic. (Sometimes a cultivator’s constitution and ability to “cure” themselves just… made a person drink more. A lot more.) Which was… not good.
At seventeen, Shang Qinghua met Mobei-Jun.
He didn’t know where to get started with Mobei-Jun.
Somehow he’d… forgotten that Mobei-Jun had been originally based on Airplane’s idea of “the perfect man” and not the super pretty, muscular but slim-waisted protagonist type? The real Mobei-Jun was… tall… and big… and thick. Mobei-Jun’s intimidating features were… more striking than pretty. The first time Shang Qinghua had come back to his Leisure House and found this spoiled brat of an ice demon napping shirtless on his bed, and gotten an eyeful of all that heavy muscle and chest hair, he’d nearly knocked himself out on the doorframe trying to turn away before he had a heart attack.
Mobei-Jun really was going to be the death of him, holy shit.
Especially because this ice demon really was a spoiled brat! Airplane had described this character as being arrogant and apathetic, so now Shang Qinghua had to deal with a Mobei-Jun who took long baths and then carelessly dripped water all over the floor and all over fresh sheets! Who ate all of Shang Qinghua’s cooking and ungratefully only demanded more food, sprawled over furniture not really fit for someone of his size, and then watched Shang Qinghua like a fat tiger! Ahhh, this demon really was lucky he was handsome!
Mobei-Jun was also kind of violent, and mean, which was… well, it sucked.
Back to the sect that Shang Qinghua was now actively betraying, however, as far as he could see, there was still one future peak lord missing.
It wasn’t Shen Qingqiu, who Shang Qinghua had thought would be the last one to show up. Shen Qingqiu had shown up and had been advancing through the ranks of Qing Jing Peak before Shang Qinghua had even met Mobei-Jun, which meant that Yue Qingyuan had finally stopped looking like someone had torn out his soul. (Shang Qinghua had been forced to grit his teeth every time that someone mentioned how privileged that Yue Qingyuan was to have been granted that year of secluded cultivation in the Lingxi Caves at such a young age.)
No, of all the peak lords, it was Liu Qingge who Shang Qinghua had yet to meet.
After meeting Mobei-Jun and becoming an inner disciple, the System had given Shang Qinghua three years to make it to head disciple, probably because the deadline for a new generation of peak lords to ascend was fast approaching. He was working hard to achieve that! Not only did he have to sabotage the current favorite, but he had to make sure all his own training, missions, work, and research were as close to flawless as he could get it! All while keeping an intruding ice demon happy! He wasn’t totally sure that he was going to make it at this rate, even though he’d been here for years.
So it was a little concerning that Liu Qingge hadn't shown up yet. There was so much left to do. A world-state that had yet to be established. Liu Qingge had work to do here!
Liu Qingge and Shen Qingqiu still had to develop a hatred for each other as disciples that would extend to everyone believing that Shen Qingqiu had murdered Liu Qingge as peak lords, after all. Granted, all Liu Qingge really had to do was beat everyone else on Bai Zhan Peak up to obtain the position, and it wasn’t exactly hard to get Shen Qingqiu to develop a lifelong grudge, but the guy was still cutting it pretty close.
It was possible that Liu Qingge was already on Bai Zhan Peak and making good progress, but that he was just so solitary and focused on searching out the next big battle that Shang Qinghua had just never had the opportunity to meet him. Shang Qinghua did his best to avoid Bai Zhan Peak most of the time, honestly! He was curious about where Liu Qingge was, about what the man looked like, but he didn’t let himself sweat at not seeing the future war god, when he already had so many things to sweat about. The System had taken care of bringing in everyone else, so Shang Qinghua was sure that Liu Qingge would follow sooner or later.
Shang Qinghua’s first sign that something was wrong was that, on the day that Liu Qingge finally announced his existence by beating up everyone on Bai Zhan Peak, everyone was saying things like, “I can’t believe some kid managed to topple all of Bai Zhan like that!”
He… may or may not have ignored this sign.
To be fair to this poor writer-turned-disciple, though, he’d been up all night finishing some paperwork catastrophe the An Ding Peak Lord had thrown at him to fix, as some kind of “test” of his logistics skills. Upon hearing the latest gossip, Shang Qinghua thought, “Oh, finally?” And then his overtired brain collapsed from the effort of thinking two words together in a sentence, and all he could manage from there was to feel the intense need to go to bed at a maximum, static-y volume. No words. No more thinky thoughts. Just the need for speedy sleep.
He stumbled through the rest of his day and then passed out for 18 hours straight. In hindsight, this would have been the time when the gossip was at its hottest. He missed all of it.
When he woke up, everyone was still dealing with the aftermath of what had happened on Bai Zhan Peak, but the conversation had shifted more towards replacing Qian Cao Peak’s depleted supplies and the repairs to Bai Zhan’s training grounds. Liu Qingge was the name on everyone’s lips, still, but everyone knew the basic information now. Now, everyone was just exclaiming over and over again how unbelievably young (and pretty) he was to have bested every other disciple on the sect battle-focused peak. This didn't seem too strange.
The System probably would have based the War God's appearance on his sister, Liu Mingyan, a strong contender for the most beautiful woman in all of Proud Immortal Demon Way. Liu Qingge apparently being a very pretty boy fell neatly into line with all the other character design surprises that Shang Qinghua had gotten smacked with so far.
If Airplane had known that he'd be transmigrating into his novel, maybe there would have been even more handsome men! And everyone would have lived happily ever after and nothing bad would have happened ever, probably, but also there might be more sexy guys too.

Tumblr media
Okay, so this isn’t the first time that Tumblr has eaten up a post of mine and I’m seriously considering taking my business elsewhere (especially since the Tumblr Management Community seem more baffled than me about this).
Rant over.
Thank you, anon. This was fun to draft.
And, guys, lemme know your thoughts - either about Tumblr’s disappearing posts issue or the ZhanYi fic below ;)
A/N: There is a brief glossary of terms at the end of this post.
~~~
The vertiginous passage of spectral city lights, vivid and voracious. The near-silent hum of a hybrid vehicle as it navigated through three am traffic. The taste of victory at the back of his mouth like the inside of a sports cup at halftime.
Brooding and unblinking, his cell phone was a polished brick in his palm. Holding its breath for a text that was never going to come. But holding anyway. Hoping.
Zheng Xi repressed a sigh, feeling spent and sore. Nailing his first Stanley Cup did nothing to cushion his come-down from a post-win high – a come-down that was more a crash-down, and a high that made him question the quality of what he was shooting up with. Except, if he was being honest with himself, Zheng Xi knew it wasn’t about quality; there was nothing more raw or unadulterated than being the youngest NHL team in the division and defying all odds to reign as this season’s champions.
But raw did not compare to piquant purity, and unadulterated had nothing on divine defilement; the kind of drug that had Zheng Xi tripping at first sight, and intoxicated at first taste.
“Third building on the left,” he intoned as the Prius steered towards a bank of high-rise apartment complexes.
The Uber driver caught Zheng Xi’s gaze in the review mirror. A question in his close-set eyes. A trace of recognition. They’d barely exchanged two words during the ninety-minute drive, plenty of time and opportunity for the driver to study his sullen profile, the wide-set of his shoulders, the square of his jaw – unmistakeable even through the carbon shell of a wire-caged helmet.
As the car slowed to a stop, Zheng Xi snagged a crisp fifty out of his wallet.
“Congratulations on the Championship,” the driver hedged, hesitant. Likely because the dejected customer in the back seat was nothing like the fierce D-man in the rink, or the fervent player at the postgame conference a few hours ago. “My son is a huge fan.”
Quelling the urge to wince at being recognised, Zheng Xi mumbled a thanks. Realised what a dick he was being. Slipped another fifty out of his wallet. “Do you have a pen?”
With a nod and a fumbled affirmative, the driver pulled a ballpoint out of the breast pocket of his lined shirt. Zheng Xi uncapped the pen and scrawled the Chinese characters that corresponded to his name onto one of the bills.
Handing the tip and the autographed fifty-dollar note to the other man, Zheng Xi thrust the car door open. “Have a good one.”
“Thanks, man,” the driver beamed. “And, uh,” – a pointed glance at the tall building to their left – “good luck with everything.”
Zheng Xi flinched. If only. But all the luck in the world wasn’t going to smooth this over.
He let the door slam shut behind him, teetering slightly because, after a game, his feet were more accustomed to balancing on a set of blades than swaying in an unfamiliar pair of Futurecraft 4Ds. As the Prius rolled away, he swiped a thumb across his phone screen. Hit the last number he’d dialled.
“This phone is currently switched off. Please try –” He hung up, swallowing jagged-edged knots of despair and disappointment down his dry throat.
Strides sluggish, he made his way towards the black glass of the front door, his reflection looming and growing larger with each step he took, his sense of self-worth growing smaller. He let his fingers hover over the metallochromic buttons of the intercom mounted on the wall, debating for a minute. And then thumbed through his phone for the app with the electronic passkey – the one that was issued to him back when the flat on the fifteenth floor was like a second home to him, when the man who lived in it was more than just home.
Zheng Xi flashed his phone over the digital reader and a musical little ding announced an approval. As he pushed through the unlocked door, his cell jolted in his grip with an incoming call. Zheng Xi’s throat constricted and cut off a breath mid-exhalation.
But it wasn’t him.
The name illuminating his screen reminded him of the late hour. Of how it was way past curfew. Of how, right now, he should’ve been tucked in a hotel bed, trying and failing to get some shuteye, because tomorrow was another long bus ride back to the capital, a champions’ ceremony, a team interview, a fans’ meet. All the things that had once meant something. But he couldn’t, for the life of him, remember what.
Slinking past the elevator, he pocketed his phone – Coach could chew him out later – and took the stairs two-by-two, the drumbeat of his heart dissonant and deafening. When he finally reached that familiar door on the fifteenth floor, he was a little winded, not from exertion or exhaustion, but expectation. The expectation that this was all going to go to shit.
But I gotta know for sure.
Zheng Xi took a deep, steadying breath before gently rapping his knuckles against the smooth wood. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d knocked like a guest. A stranger. Maybe at the very beginning, once or twice, before he was spending more time here than at his own bachelor pad in the next city over.
A long moment of silence followed his knock. And, so, he rapped again, harder this time. More urgent. Desperate.
A muffled thump indicated movement in the apartment and Zheng Xi stepped back, panicking because the speech he’d prepared on the journey here now sounded ponderous and pathetic. He wet his lips as the door handle rattled slightly. And cursed the way his own hands rattled even more.
The door opened just enough for the man on the other side to peek through the gap.
“Zheng Xi?” Jian Yi’s voice was a seraphic solo made sweeter by the sleep underscoring his cadence. “What… What are you doing here?”
What was he doing there?
“Hey,” Zheng Xi croaked. Cleared his throat. Crammed his hands into the pockets of his flight jacket. “You weren’t at the press conference.”
A puzzled purse of strawberry-pink lips. “I don’t… I cover baseball now.”
Yeah. Don’t I fucking know it.
A soft squeak as the door swung wide open. A sibilant shuffle as slim, bare feet brushed a little closer. An audible swallow as Zheng Xi took in the sight before him.
Jian Yi in nothing but a creased, oversized nightshirt, his compact toes painted a frosty-periwinkle, his mussed hair sleep-curled and longer than had it been when Zheng Xi last ran his fingers through it six months ago.
“Why are you here, Zheng Xi?” The little wrinkle between fair brows made Zheng Xi want to reach out and smooth it down with his fingers. With his mouth.
I fucked up.
“You know I’m not… good with words,” Zheng Xi began, the weight in his chest growing heavier with every passing second.
Jian Yi tilted his head, perplexed but patient.
“Maybe we could talk inside?” Zheng Xi asked, daring to hope.
Stiffening, Jian Yi looked away. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
Zheng Xi nodded like he understood, but all he really understood was how big a mistake this was. He knew it then; Jian Yi was going to say no. And the rejection was going to kill him.
“It was all for nothing,” he confessed, because, at this point, he didn’t have much left to lose. “Week after week of drills til we were dead on our feet, skating til we couldn’t stand straight, playing til we passed out.” The vile taste of victory was back in his mouth again, and Zheng Xi’s stomach heaved. “NHL Champions but I’ve never felt less like a winner.”
A small, sad smile on those pink, pearly lips. “I watched the game. It was solid, D-man. You deserve the title.”
I don’t fucking want it.
“It doesn’t mean anything.” Beseeching, broken, he scanned Jian Yi’s bright gaze. “Not without you.”
A flutter of motion as Jian Yi hugged himself. A flutter of pale lashes fanning downcast eyes. A flutter of Zheng Xi’s battered heart as it braced itself.
“Jian Yi. Please.”
Shaking his head, Jian Yi staggered back. “No. I’m done being your dirty little secret.”
The words kronwalled into Zheng Xi, and the weight in his chest bottomed out.
That’s how he made Jian Yi feel?
“I’m sorry, I didn’t –”
“You don’t need to apologise, Zheng Xi,” Jian Yi softly interjected. “I know how much hockey means to you – so much that you can’t even be seen out in public with me, an openly queer sports journalist.” He shrugged or shuddered; Zheng Xi couldn’t tell. “I respect that you don’t feel ready to come out, and I would never ask you to do that for me. But all the lies and the secrets and the sneaking around… made me feel like a bad habit. Not a boyfriend.”
A prickling wetness pecked at the corners of Zheng Xi eyes. With a sharp nod, he turned on his heel. But Jian Yi closed the distance between them before he could walk away. Run away. Hide.
Tugging him down by the front of his jacket, Jian Yi wrapped his arms around Zheng Xi, the embrace tight and tender all at once. “Own it, Xixi. All of it,” he whispered.
It was over before it began, Jian Yi pulling back before Zheng Xi could snuffle those layered locks one last time.
A glint and a twinkle in a gold-flecked eye. “That’s different. After a win, you usually smell like a bar,” Jian Yi tittered. “Or eau de puck bunny. Tonight you just… smell like you.”
Zheng Xi’s lips lifted with a loose smile at that teasing tone. And fell again as Jian Yi waved a farewell and sidled back into his apartment, the resounding snick of the latch loud and lasting.
As he stumbled back down fifteen flights, Zheng Xi tapped away at his phone, searching for nearby Uber cabs. He ignored the searing sting behind his eyes, just like he ignored the missed calls and the multiple notification icons at the top of his screen; he wasn’t ready to deal with the aftermath of posting the Instagram video he had recorded at the back of the Prius. All the inevitable the ‘D’ in D-man jokes. Not yet.
But, as he huddled outside the building waiting for his ride, he thought back to how the Uber driver had treated him despite overhearing him come out to the world.
Just another pro athlete his son looked up to.
A sportsman. Not a sexuality.
And the crash-down slowed down to a free-fall til it almost felt like he was floating.
Knowing the PR team was already going to ream him out come morning, Zheng Xi hit the Twitter app on his homescreen and typed out: ‘Lacing up my rainbow skates. See you on the ice. #NHL #LGBTQAthlete #OwningIt.’
Records of Shi Le, part 1
[From JS104. Shi Le and the Eighteen Riders, there’s a story waiting to be told (made up) here for someone creative with time on their hands.]
Shi Le, courtesy name Shilong, originally named Bei, was a Jie from Wuxiang in Shangdang. His ancestors were descendants of a separate section of the Xiongnu, the Qiangqu. His grandfather Yeyiyu and father Zhou Hezhu, also named Qijijia, were both minor chiefs of section groups. At the time of Le's birth, a red light filled the house. White vapour from the sky collected in the the middle of the courtyard. Those who saw were completely amazed by it.
At 14 years old, he followed people of the district travelling to Luoyang, relying on screaming at the Shangdong gate. Wang Yan [JS043] saw and was amazed by him. He looked back and spoke left and right, saying: “Turning toward the Hu toddler, I see his voice and looks have a remarkable determination, I fear he will be the scourge of Under Heaven.” He hurriedly dispatched to collect him, but Le had already left.
He was tall, large and strong, and was brave and vigorous, was heroic and martial and good at riding and shooting. Hezhu was by nature evil and crude, and did not have the adherence of the multitude of Hu. He always sent Le to replace himself in supervising and assisting. The Hu section loved and trusted him.
He resided in Wuxiang below the northern highlands and mountains grass and wood [?], all had the semblance of strong cavalry. In the middle of the houses and gardens he lived side by side with people[?], flowers and leaves were very thick. He knew completely the shape of people [?].
The old fathers and the judges [of character] all said: “This Hu's shape and appearance is unusual and remarkable, his purpose and measures not common, he in the end can not be measured.” They urged the people of the district to greatly get along with him. At the time there was much ridicule and snicker. Only Guo Jing, a native of Wu鄔, and Ning Qu of Yangqu accordingly considered it to be true, both adding wealth and support. Le likewise perceived their kindness and was cultivating their strength.
He always heard the sound of sheath and bell, and returned to thereby to inform his mother. His mother said: “Arising to work and hearing a bird cry, can not but be a good omen.”
In the middle of Tainan [302 – 303], there was in Bing province starvation and chaos. Le with several young Hu absconded and scattered. Then he returned from Yanmen returned to rely on Ning Qu. The Chief Commandant of Beize, Liu Jian, tied them up and sold them, Qu hid them and obtained a pardon.
Le hence secretly went to accept to surrender [?] to the Chief Commandant Li Chuan. On the road he happened to meet Guo Jing. He wept and bowed, saying he was hungry and frozen. Jing replied to him with flowing tears, and used belted goods to sell for food for him, and combined to give accordingly clothes and dress. [?]
Le spoke to Jing, saying: “Presently there is a great hunger, [I?] can not defend the poor. The various Hu are very starved, we ought to induce to want Ji province to approach with grain. For this reason arresting and selling them, can both help.” [?] Jing deeply affirmed him.
It happened that the General who Establishes Power, Yan Cui, told the Inspector of Bing province, the Duke of Dongying, Teng, to carry the various Hu to the east of the mountains to sell to supply the army wealth. Teng sent Generals Guo Yang and Zhang Long with a group of Hu wanting [?] to go to Ji province, two Hu in one yoke.
Le at the time was more than twenty years old and likewise was in its middle [?]. He several times was spurred on and humiliated by Long. Jing formerly due to Le connected Guo Yang and elder brother's son Shi [?]. Yang was Jing's fraternal elder brother. Thus used Yang and Shi each time as requesters for  release. [?]. On the roads and paths there was starvation and disease. He relied on Yang and Shi, and [they] helped. [?]
Then he was sold to Shi Huan, a native of Chiping, as a slave. There was a single old man who spoke to Le saying: “Sir's fish dragon and hair juncture above the Four Ways are already complete [?], [you] must necessarily be a master of men. In the year of jiaxu, the royal Pengzu can be charted [?].” Le said: “Like before noble speech, [I] do not dare to forget virtue.” Suddenly he did not see [him].
Each time he ploughed and worked in the fields, he often heard the sounds of drums and horns. Le thereby told the various slaves. The various slaves likewise heard it [him?]. Because of that [he?] said: “When I as an infant came to be in a house, [I] regularly heard [sound] like this.” The various slaves returned to accordingly tell Huan. Huan likewise was amazed by his appearance and countenance, and released him.
Huan's house was neighbour to horse shepherds. [They?] and the leader of the shepherds, Ji Sang of Wei commandery came and went. Le, due to being able to judge horses, himself was relied on by Sang [?]. He was once hired at Wu'an and Linshui and was confined by the patrolling army. It happened that there was a group of deer passing near by. The army people competed to chase them and Le therefore managed to escape. Suddenly he again saw the single old man. He spoke to Le, saying: “The direction of the group of deer [was?] me. Sir must be the master of the central provinces. Because of that [I] judged to save you.” Le bowed and accepted the instructions.
Thereupon he summoned and assembled Wang Yang, Kui An, Zhi Xiong, Ji Bao, Wu Yu, Liu Ying, Tao Bao, Lu Ming and others, eight riders, as a group of bandits. Later Guo Ao, Liu Zheng, Liu Bao, Zhang Yipu, Huyan Mo, Guo Heilüe, Zhang Yue, Kong Tun, Zhao Lu, Zhi Quliu and others also attended him. They were called the Eighteen Riders. They again went east to the red dragon thoroughbreds within the various pastures [?]. They drove the pasture horses and plundered silk and treasures, to accordingly present to Ji Sang.
When the King of Chengdu, Ying, defeated the Driving Carriage at Dangyin, he compelled the Emperor to go to the Ye palace. Wang Jun [JS039], due to Ying insulting and humiliating the Son of Heaven, sent Xianbei to strike him. Ying was afraid, clasped Emperor and fled south to Luoyang. The Emperor was again pressured by Zhang Fang [JS060] to move to Chang'an. By the frontiers to the east there were soldiers rising up, all in the name of executing Ying [?].
The King of Hejian, Yong, feared the abundance of the eastern host and desired to gather in his breast to go east again, and therefore memorialised to discuss to discard Ying. That year, Liu Yuanhai called [himself] King of Han at Liting. Ying because of that used Gongshi Fan, a native of Yangping, and others, calling himself General, raising troops in Zhao and Wei. The multitudes came in several tens of thousands.
Le and Ji Sang led the shepherds riding the pasture horses, several hundred riders, to accordingly attend him. Sang started to instruct Le to use Shi as family name, Le became known as that. Fan designated Le as Controller of the Van Group, following to attack the Duke of Pingchang, Mo, at Ye. Mo sent General Feng Song to confront them in battle, defeating them. Fan crossed [the He] south at Baima. The Grand Warden of Puyang, Ji Xi punished and beheaded him.
Le and Sang ran away and hid within the pastures. Sang used Le to crouch at night at the Serrated Gates [?], leading the shepherds to rob and plunder the counties of the commandery and fasten prisoners. He also summoned [those who] had fled the instructions into the mountains and marshes. Many adhered to Le. Le led [them?] to accordingly submit to him [Sang?].
Sang therefore titled himself Great General, saying he was in the name of the King of Chengdu, Ying, executing the King of Donghai, Yue and the Duke of Dongying, Teng. Sang used Le as the van rider. He again and again had merits in battle and was appointed to be General who Sweeps away the Caitiffs and Marquis of Zhongming village.
Sang advanced the army to attack Ye, using Le as Commander-in-Chief of the Vanguard. They greatly defeated Teng's general Feng Song and because of that pushed deep to enter Ye. Thereupon they murdered Teng, killed more than ten thousand people, carried off wives, maidens and the precious treasure, and left. They crossed from Yanjin and to the south struck Yan province. Yue was greatly afraid and sent Guo Xi [JS061], Wang Zan and others to punish them.
Sang and Le attacked the Inspector of You province, Shi Xian, at Leling. Xian died there. The beggar Tian Yin led a multitude of 50 000 to save Xian. Le confronted him in battle and defeated Yin. He and Xi and others opposed each other in Pingyuan and Yangping for a period of several months. In more than thirty battles great and small, they won and lost against each other. Yue was afraid and lodged at Guandu, to express support for Xi.
Sang and Le were defeated by Xi. The dead where more than ten thousand people. They therefore gathered their remanding multitudes, wanting to flee to Liu Yuanhai. The Inspector of Ji Province, Ding Shao [JS090], intercepted them at Chiqiao, again greatly defeating them. Sang fled to the horse shepherds. Le fled to Leping. The royal host beheaded Sang in Pingyuan.
At the time the Hu section greats Zhang Beidu, Feng Motu and others embraced a multitude of several thousand, walling off in Shangdang. Le went to follow them and became very close. Because of that he spoke to Beidu, saying: “Shanyu Liu is raising troops to execute Jin. The sections greats resist and do not follow. How [are you] able to stand alone?”
He said: “[We] are not able.”
Le said: “For that reason thus those who are not able, troops and horses must be stringed together. Now the section groups are all already appreciated and summoned by the Shanyu, from time to time they assemble to discuss their desire to rebel against the section greats and revert to the Shanyu. We ought to soon be their plan. [?]”
Beidu and others habitually were without wisdom or plans, and feared the section multitudes were not devoted to them [?]. They therefore secretly followed Le on single horseback to revert to Yuanhai. Yuanhai appointed Beidu King who is Fond of Han, Motu as Commander-in-Chief of the Section Greats, and used Le as General who Assists Han and King who Pacifies Jin to thereby command them. Le hence instructed Beidu as an elder brother, bestowing on him the family name of the Shi clan, naming him Hui, saying he had met himself.
Zhang Fulidu of the Wuwan likewise had a multitude of 2 000 walling up in Leping. Yuanhai again and again summoned him, yet he was not able to bring it about. Le pretended to commit a crime to Yuanhai, and because of that fled to Fulidu. Fulidu was greatly pleased and joined with him as brothers. He sent Le to lead the various Hu to rob and plunder, being not toward the front [?]. The various Hu feared and submitted.
Le knew the multitude in their hearts were adhering to himself, and therefore because of that assembled and detained Fulidu, announcing to the various Hu, saying: “Now to begin the great affair, I or Fulidu, who is worthy of being the master?” The various Hu together accordingly pushed forward Le. Le hence released Fulidu and led his section's multitude to revert to Yuanhai. Yuanhai promoted Le to Controller of All Army Affairs in Conquering and Punishing East of the Mountains, using Fulidu's multitude to pair with him.
Yuanhai sent Liu Cong to attack Huguan, and instructed Le to lead his command of 7 000 as Commander-in-Chief of the Vanguard. Liu Kun [JS062] dispatched Army Protector Huang Xiu and others to relieve Huguan. Le defeated Xiu at Baitian. Le thereupon captured Huguan.
Yuanhai instructed Le, Liu Ling, Yan Pi and others, seven generals, to lead a multitude of 30 000 to rob the various ramparts and walls of Wei commandery and Dunqiu. They captured many of them and made use of the rampart masters as Generals and Chief Commandants. They selected the strong and big, 50 000, as soldiers in the army, the old and weak to stay at the walls like before. The army was without private plundering, the hundred families cherished them.
When Yuanhai usurped the title [of Emperor], he dispatched envoys to confer on Le Holding the Tally and Great General who Pacifies the East. Colonel, Commander-in-Chief and King like before.
Le united the army to rob Ye. Ye was overrun. He Yu fled to Weyguo. [Le] seized the Grand Warden of Wei commandery, Wang Cui, advanced to attack Zhao commandery and murdered the Chief Commandant of the Western Section of Ji province, Feng Chong. He attacked the beggars She Ting and Tian Yin at Zhongqiu, killing them both.
Yuanhai conferred on Le Great General who Calms the East and Opening Office, and to set up Senior Clerks of the Left and Right, Marshal, and Assistant Officer Palace Gentleman.
He advanced the army to attack Julu and Changshan, murdering the Wardens and generals of the two commanderies. He captured in the commanderies and counties of Ji province more than a hundred forts and walls, his multitude reached more than 100 000. Their clothes, caps, people and things he assembled as the lordly master barracks [?].
Therefore he pulled Zhang Bin as Master of Planning, and first appointed a Board of Merit of the Army. He used Diao Ying and Zhang Jin as thighs and arms; Kui An and Kong Chang as claws and teeth; Zhi Xiong, Huyan Mo, Wang Yang, Tao Bao, Lu Ming, Wu Yu and others as generals and commanders.
He sent his general Zhang Si to lead cavalry to go to Bing province's various commanderies and counties north of the mountains, to explain to the various Hu and Jie, to shine light on and thereby calm the danger [?]. The various Hu feared Le's power and fame, and many were those who adhered. He advanced the army Changshan and separately dispatched various generals to attack the various counties of Zhongshan, Boling and Gaoyang. Those who surrendered to him were several tens of thousand people.
Wang Jun [JS039] sent his general Qi Hong to lead the Xianbei Duan Wuchen and others, 100 000 cavalry, to punish Le. He greatly defeated Le at Feilong Mountain. The dead were more than 10 000. Le withdrew to garrison Liyang. He separately instructed the various generals to attack the various who were not obeying and rebelling [?], degrading [?] 30 walled places [?] and setting up wardens and stewards to thereby console them.
He advanced to rob Xindu, murdering the Inspector of Ji province, Wang Bin. Hence the General of Chariots and Cavalry, Wang Kan, and the Commander of the Palace Gentlemen of the North, Pei Xian, led the multitudes from Luoyang to punish Le. Le burnt the barracks and combined the provisions, and turned around the army to resist them, lodging at Huangniu Ramparts. The Grand Warden of Wei commandery, Liu Ju, used the commandery to adhere to Le. Le sent Ju to command his rampart multitudes as the Left Wing of the Centre Army. Le arrived at Liyang. Pei Xian abandoned his army and fled south of the Huai. Wang Kan withdrew to fortify Cangyuan.
Yuanhai conferred on Le Great General who Garrisons the East, and enfeoffed him Duke of Ji commandery, Grasping the Tally, Commander-in-Chief and King [!] like before. Le firmly deferred to be a Duke and did not accept.
He and Yan Pi attacked Duquan and Yuanshi ramparts, capturing them. Pi was hit by a flying arrow and died. Le joined together and commanded their multitudes. He crossed the He from Shiqiao and captured Baima and buried alive men and women, more than 3 000 mouths. To the east he raided Juancheng and murdered the Inspector of Yan province, Yuan Fu. Because of that he could attack Cangyuan, capturing it, and thereupon murder Kan. He crossed the He to attack the various counties of Guangzong, Qinghe, Pingyuan and Yangping. Those who surrendered to Le were more than 70 000 mouths. He again crossed the He south, the Grand Warden of Xingyang, Pei Chun, fled to Jianye.
At the time Liu Cong attacked Henei. Le led cavalry to meet with him. He attacked the General of the Best of the Army, Liang Ju, at Wude. Emperor Huai dispatched troops to aid him [Ju]. Le halted the various generals to defend Wude. He and Wang Sang confronted Ju at Changling. Ju requested to surrended. Le did allow it. Ju crossed over the walls and hid. The people of the army arrested him. Le hurried to Wude and buried the surrendered soldiers, more than 10 000. He counted Liang Ju's crimes and murdered him. The royal host withdrew and returned. North of the He the various fortresses and walls greatly shook, and all requested to surrender and sent to yield to Le.
