Legally Romance 7/8
Story: 8
Acting: 10
Chemistry: 10
Comparable to: Lost Romance (Taiwanese); Forever Love (cdrama)
As much as I love both actors, especially Tao, this series for me was very uneven. The first half I actually didn’t care for as much as I did as the last half which is unusual since it’s usually the other way around. I think it had a lot to do with how the female was written with the storyline. The whole plot resolves on “dreams” with a twist (don’t want to give away spoilers for those who still haven’t seen it yet) Now the chemistry between both leads are amazing to a point. I do feel Tao has more of a lovey-dovey feel to him then Song Zu Er especially in the first half, where Zu Er’s character is more stand-off’ish. There’s much more of a connection in the second half between them when her ‘dream’ ends. Overall it’s a nice pleasant unique romcom with a few hiccups here and there.

Title: #LegallyRomance #才不要和老板谈恋爱
Main Cast: #SongZuer #ZTAO #LiBaiHui
I totally watched this for Song Zu'er, I love her as an actress. At first I was like uggggg a legal drama but once I started it I realized it was definitely more about the relationships and the writing used that as a backdrop to tell that story. Song Zuer was definitely super cute and fun to watch and Z Tao was a great love interest and absolutely dedicated to her character. I also really liked Li Bai Hi's character throughout, she was cute and tough which made her romantic relationship an amusing side story. The story itself comes in two different parts, one was her alternate timeline where she gets to relive her college years and change her life, the other part was reality which opens up due to information she finds out during her second time around in college. All of this leads to a pretty amazing love story which was definitely better than the one she started out with. I pretty much watch all of Song Zu'er's dramas so for me this was a must. I would definitely recommend, doesn't disappoint especially if you are Zu'er fan.

WIP Wednesday (MLC Mind Control Bug Fic Edition)
Happy Wednesday! Have some of a new MLC fic I just started working on!
I realized I had very strong feelings about amnesia in fics (as someone who has experienced it before), and so a new MLC one-shot fic was born, in which amnesiac a-Fei discovers the mind control bug in his neck his first night in Lotus Tower. (This part takes place after his failed attempts to get it out.)
To anyone who is missing my MLC longfic excerpts, the plan is to continue with them next week! (I'm hoping to get this one up on AO3 by the end of the weekend!)
A-Fei’s head swam a little with each step, but the pain had mostly subsided to a dull, manageable thud in time with his pulse. He was distantly tempted to pull himself free from Li Lianhua’s hands and walk unaided back to Lotus Tower, gathering enough energy to collapse only once he had reached his bed upstairs. But Li Lianhua gripped his arm more tightly the first time he even felt like he might be about to wobble, and yanked it over his shoulder until he was using Li Lianhua like half a crutch. And suddenly, not touching Li Lianhua seemed unacceptable.
“What were you thinking?” Li Lianhua muttered again, wrapping his other arm around a-Fei’s back and resting his hand on his waist. “You probably reopened your stab wound, collapsing like that. I really should be charging you for this, you know. You’re getting my professional expertise for free.” His grip tightened on a-Fei’s waist too close to the stab wound, sending ripples of angry fire coursing up his torso.
A-Fei hissed out a pained breath. “It’s worth exactly what I’m paying for it.”
Li Lianhua pulled his hand away from the injured waist like he’d been burned. “Don’t be ridiculous,” he said, putting his hand much higher up this time, closer to a-Fei’s ribcage. “I was just checking to see if you’re bleeding through the bandages. It’s a necessary part of the process.”
“Hmm,” a-Fei hummed, taking several more steps and relishing the sensation of the man’s hand against his side. His fingers were cold but the touch warmed him nonetheless. “And am I?”
“Are you what?”
“Bleeding through the bandages?”
“I didn’t finish checking. You’re too terrible a patient,” Li Lianhua said, squeezing a-Fei’s forearm in what seemed like an apology. “I’ll have to examine it more inside.”
“I see,” a-Fei said, taking another step, his mind still turning over the grip on his arm. Had they touched often? The idea of anyone else touching him made him want to unsheathe his dao, but with Li Lianhua, he would almost rather chance one of his bai hui’s acupoint’s lightening bolts of pain than step away. And as much as he disliked the idea of needing his wound examined, it would give him the opportunity to examine Li Lianhua. And to continue observing his own reactions to the man’s hands. “And what exactly does this examination entail?” he teased. “Based on your earlier example, I assume pinching or punching the wound? Or stabbing it again to check the durability of the healing skin?”
Li Lianhua snorted. “Only if you keep insulting my competence.” Then he paused, mid-step, his grip on a-Fei loosening. “Ah. I’m just going to look at the plaster. If blood has soaked through it, I’ll pour hemostatic powder on the wound first and then put a new plaster on. You’ll just need to untie your robes, but they can stay on. I’ll be quick.”
Huh. Unexpected. He had been joking, but actual information about what to expect didn’t hurt. Although something about the way he mentioned robes was strange. Almost as though Li Lianhua was uncomfortable about it. There was no reason for that to be an awkward request from someone providing medical treatment–
Unless they had been in a relationship, or at least had prior sexual history together.
It would certainly explain his response to Li Lianhua’s hands touching him.
He’d have to investigate more to be sure, since asking would be sure to prompt more lies.

So I dragged myself kicking and screaming and, yes, mostly in denial, through the last episodes of A Journey to Love.
My thoughts can be summarized as follows:
Tumblr media
Obviously this is mainly due to me being horrifically traumatized by Yuan Lu’s death. After all, they told us from the get go he wouldn’t live to 20. They made it clear he had a deadly heart disease. And then. They had the nerve. They had the audacity. They had the actual fucking bahoonga BALLS to follow through!?
But then I found myself sobbing at literally every good guy death scene, plus all of the mourning scenes. The latter was in large part thanks to Alen Fang's acting - deepest apologies to him for just referring to his character as 'the slutty one' for the majority of the show. Not that I was wrong. Also thanks to strong performances from He Lan Dou for Yuan Lu's death.
Anyway so I need to add this gif x4 for the Liudao Hall babies:
Qian Zhao, da ge, who made mistakes but always did right in the end
Sun Lang, who just wanted to hold something fluffy at the end, dying a hero
Yuan Lu, who died in his princess's arms after running to deliver a letter rendered useless by the Emperor of An's greed.
Yu Shisan, who lived as he lived and had such a happy moment with Chu Yue right before it all became irrevocable.
When they added Yu Shisan to the snowball fight, I just about lost it. Liu Yuning's acting there - having the realization about Shisan's death as he watched them play in real time was so well done. Really hurt.
Plus I'll make a couple of versions with edits.
Tumblr media
For the Wu Emperor. I knew it was gonna happen from the spoilers but damn, him genuinely learning the value of friendship and brotherly love made me root for him. Dude did not deserve to go out like that. Thank goodness for the magic of CDramas where he lived just long enough to pass on his will to Ning Yuanzhou, and do one last act of good.
It also ensured Duke of Chu was able to pass on his command to his daughter, Chu Yue, before dying of the same (was not clear if her bro died or not, or if dad was always going to choose her).
And for Deng Hui. Started out thinking he was just a sexist bastard. Turns out he was one of the most principled characters in the show.
Their deaths didn't make me cry, but I respect them.
Also loved Chen Du Ling's (Empress of Wu) small part in this. I may not like all of her characters but she can deliver a scene and hold a room. It was a bit cathartic to see her put every man in their place, and basically decide the fate of two countries, even though her lament that she'd only ever have power through another held true.
Ah Ying, my baby girl. This is a character that could have turned people off from the beginning. Thanks to strong writing and stronger acting, it did not. I was super impressed with He Lan Dou. She can dial it up and dial it down in a single take, and can play big dramatic scenes with a subtlety that some older actors cannot grasp. This was the first thing I've seen her in, though for her and Chen You Wei (Yuan Lu) I might watch Tiger and Crane if someone tells me it's good.
I still think Li Tongguang is a perverted and creepy child, who never managed to learn (except in literally the last ep), but at least I trust that he will treat Ah Ying well. I don't hold it against him for screwing up the battle - he was trying to be benevolent but made a bad choice.
The main couple win it for me this year. What an inspired pairing. They beat out heavy hitters including Bai Lu x Everyone which was near impossible. Something to do with letting Liu Shi Shi use Liu Yuning's height against him at every possible moment. Also the 'if you die, I'll finish the job and then follow you' is my favorite dynamic. I swear when Ruyi threw those bombs, NOT NEEDING TO HAVING ALREADY SUCCEEDED AT KILLING THE KING AND PRINCE, just to join him, y'all I died. Good for whoever posthumously gave her the Marquis title on her own (not just furen) - couldn't tell if it was Li Tongguang acting as regent or Dayang (great shot of those two at the end).
The final episode was one of the best final cdrama episodes I've seen. I might have to make another post about that. In sum, despite losing a large portion of the well-loved cast, the remainder gave a world-class finale. The visuals were incredible (explosions are my favorite). The final scene was beautiful (though I'm a bit surprised they gave it to Chu Yue instead of Ah Ying who knew all 6 of them closely).

Rating cdramas I watched as a newbie pt.1
!!Spoiler Warning!!
The Untamed 9+1/10
Acting: 10/10 World-building: 9/10 Production: 7/10 Storytelling: 9/10 Re-watch Value: 10/10  Pacing: 7/10 Bonus: +1 for Chemistry & Fight Scenes
Tumblr media
The Untamed was the first C-Drama I watched. At the time, my BTS focused Twitter TL started to watch the drama during BTS 2019 break and I joined them out of curiosity. The first few episodes left me very confused, while the beginning of the flashback in episode 3 failed to grab my attention initially. It wasn't until episode 10, that I was completely sold. Later on, the show made me cry so much. In retrospect I think, that this drama doesn't just have a high re-watch value, it actually gets better watching it a second time.
When I watch the initially confusing beginning now, it makes me tear up. While I didn't care about all the side characters at first, the second time around I was full of emotion and sadness seeing their story play out. However, the initial pacing was a bit too slow and I almost stopped watching the show. The overall world-building is interesting, but it left me with a lot of question regarding the sect system and the Wen sect felt especially flat. The highlights are definitely the acting by the main characters and the supporting cast, as well as Yibos fighting scenes. One of the biggest problem of the show is the production: From low budget CGI to cheap looking props, to strange camera angles and lighting issues.
I would always recommend this to someone who hasn't watch cdramas yet. It's easy to get into and the story and characters are equally well done!
---
Word of Honor 8/10
Acting: 8/10 World-building: 8/10 Production: 5/10 Storytelling: 8/10 Re-watch Value: 8.5/10  Pacing: 9/10 Bonus: A psycho with red eye makeup and a fan.
Tumblr media
Neflix was really adamant that I would like this show and after a while I (fourtunally) gave in. As much as I love it now, initially, it took me a while to get into the characters and world. I was often confused about the story, which actually added tension. I cried so much during that wedding. Some of the acting of the side characters was rough, so was the production at times. The romantic slowed down fight scenes really made me cringe so hard I had to pause the video multiple times. One of my favorite things is the world-building, especially the social constructed ghosts, even through it took me a while to fully understand them. The story arc between the Scorpion King and his adoptive father messed me up a bit, but it gave the show even more nuances. I love this show so much now, Wen Kexing has my whole heart.
---
Back from the Brink 6-1/10
Acting: 6/10 World-building: 7/10 Production: 8/10 Storytelling: 4/10 Re-watch Value: 4/10  Pacing: 4/10 Bonus: -1 for making me hate Liu Yao Yuan's character and acting
Tumblr media
YouTube started to recommend the show to me and I started out really liking it. Especially the familiar arc was fun and when Tian Yao took the heart scale from Yan Hui I was ready to cry. However, at some point the show turned into a mess. The characters become more and more flat and the emotional impact of the events were non existing. The acting was another weak point of the show - and I do think it's the fault of the bad script. Neo Hou is doing a good job as Tian Yao, while Zhou Ye as Yan Hui is carrying the show. Riley Wang lacks as Bai Xiao Sheng and I think he doesn't suit this genre. All the villains are flat and boring. But Liu Yao Yuan as the dumb prince Zhu Li is a crime. I hated this character every time he appeared on screen for being annoying and unnecessary. But what really made me lose it, is when I recognized the actor as having played Wang Zhi in The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty. He did such a great job there and was one of my favorite character. It takes a especially bad script, superficial directing and one-dimensional character to make a talented actor to give such a horrible performance.
--
Till the end of the Moon 10/10
Acting: 10/10 World-building: 9/10 Production: 9/10 Storytelling: 10/10 Re-watch Value: 10/10  Pacing: 10/10 Bonus: In my Tantai Jin obsession era
Tumblr media
Who needs sleep and sun light, when you got Luo Yunxi as Tantai Jin suffering so prettily? Not me apparently, since I binged the show in one weekend, skipping sleep, only to re-watch the show the second I was done with the last episode. Is there room for improvement? Of course. The editing messed up the pacing, but I still loved it the way it was. My main grievance is that they had to cut so many episodes and side stories. I see a lot of people complain about the complex story-line and plot holes, but I actually think that if you pay close attention its all explained quite well. Only the re-birth connection took me a bit to fully understand. That's why I also like the pacing - it's faster than normal, but that led me to be obsessed with the show by episode 2 (usually it takes me at least 6-10 episodes). I cried, I laughed, I squeaked and vibrated in excitement. The acting is great through out the show, even the supporting cast is pulling their weight next to two strong leads. The chemistry between Luo Yunxi and Bai Lu is really something. I loved watching the bts moment, when they were overacting their parts only to fall into character so well, once the camera was on.
The show - and Luo Yunxi - pulled my out of a hyper-fixation, that was turning draining and effecting my mental health negatively. I will forever be thankful for this, but also stay cautions not to be dragged into fandom toxicity again.

Account of the Di (WS101)
[I.e. the kingdom of Chouchi. This post covers down to the ascension of Yang Baozong in 429]
The Di are a separate kind of the Western Yi, titled the Baima. At the juncture of the Three Eras, perhaps Bai was a lord or chief, but in that period there was a single court audience. For that reason the Poetry claims:
Since those Di and Qiang, do not dare not to come to the King.
From Qin, Han and onwards, for generation they lived in Qi, Long and southwards, and Hanchuan and westwards, and established themselves as prominent leaders.
In the middle of Han's Jian'an [196 – 220] there was Yang Teng, he was a great leader of the section's family groups. Teng was brave, strong and with many plans and schemes. He was the first to move to Chouchi. Chouchi has an area of a hundred [bai] qing, because of that he used it as a title. [All] four sides are steep and sheer, and are 7 li tall. The road coils like goat intestines for thirty-six rotations. On its top is the source of the Feng river. They cook the earth to achieve salt.
After Teng there was someone named Qianwan. Wei designated him as King of the Baiqing Di. Qianwan's grandson was named Feilong. He gradually grew strong and flourishing, Emperor Wu of Jin made use of him as General who Pacifies the West.
He had no sons, and reared his sister's son Linghu Maosou as his son. Middle of Emperor Hui's Yuankang era [291 – 299], Maosou titled himself General who Supports the State and Worthy King of the Right, the crowd of Di pushed him forward as ruler. Many of the gentlemen Within the Passes who drifted and moved about relied on him. Emperor Min used him as General of Agile Cavalry and Worthy King of Left.
Maosou died, and his son Nandi controlled the position. He and his younger brother Jiantou divided the entourage. Nandi titled himself Worthy King of the Left and stationed at Xiabian. Jiantou titled himself Worthy King of the Right, and stationed at Hechi.
Nandi died, his son Yi was installed. He titled himself Envoy Holding the Tally, Dragon Prancing General, Worthy King of the Left, and Duke of Duke of Xiabian. He used Jiantou's son Pan as Envoy Holding the Tally, General of the Best of the Army, Worthy King of the Right, and Duke of Hechi. He was subject to Jin, and Jin used Yi as General who Conquers the South.
3rd Year [of Xiankang, 337 AD, per Songshu], Yi's senior kinsman Chu assaulted and killed Yi, and also gained his multitudes. He installed himself as Duke of Chouchi and was subject to Shi Hu. Later he claimed to be vassal to Jin. 10th Year of Yonghe [354 AD], changed Chu to be Duke of Tianshui.
11th Year [355 AD], Yi's younger brother Songnu sent his aunt's son Liang Sanwang to take the opportunity of attending to straight away with blade in hand kill Chu. Chu's son Guo led left and right to excute Sanwang and Songnu, and then installed himself as Duke of Chouchi. Huan Wen petitioned for Guo to be Inspector of Qin province, and for Guo's son An to be Grand Warden of Wudu.
12th Year [356 AD], Guo's junior uncle's son Jun killed Guo and installed himself. Guo's son An betrayed Fu Sheng, killed Jun, and then declared himself a vassal to Jin.
An died, his son Shi installed himself as Duke of Chouchi. Jin's 3rd Year of Taihe [368 AD], used Shi as Inspector of Qin province, and his younger brother Tong as Grand Warden of Wudu.
Shi died. Tong deposed Shi's son Zuan and installed himself. Tong was also named De. Zuan assembled a faction, assaulted and killed Tong, and installed himself as Duke of Chouchi. He dispatched envoys to go to Emperor Jianwen, who used Zuan as Inspector of Qin province. Jin's 1st Year of Xian'an [371 Ad], Fu Jian dispatched Yang An to invade Zuan. He overcame him, and moved his people to Within the Passes, and emptied the land of Baiqing.
At the death of Songnu, his two sons Fonu and Fogou escaped and ran to Fu Jian. Jian used [a daughter] as wife to Fonu's son Ding, and designated him as Master of Writing and [General who] Leads the Army. At the defeat of Fu Jian, Guanyou was disturbed and chaotic. Ding exhausted his strength for Jian. When Jian died, he led the multitudes to run to Longyou. He moved to govern Licheng, which is 120 li from Chouchi, and set up granaries and stores at Baiqing. He summoned the barbarians and the Xia, and obtained more than a thousand families. He declared himself Dragon Prancing General and Duke of Chouchi, and declared to be vassal to Jin. Xiaowu promptly used what he had titled himself to make use of him, and later used him as Inspector of Qin province. 4th Year of Dengguo [389 AD], he thereupon had the land of Qin province, and titled himself as King of Longxi. He was later killed by Qifu Qiangui. He had no sons.
Fogou's son Sheng first was overseeing the state, and defended Chouchi. He then controlled affairs, titled himself General who Conquers the West, Inspector of Qin province, and Duke of Chouchi, and conferred posthumous title on Ding as Martial [wu] King. He divided the various Di and Qiang to make twenty sections with Army-Protectors. Each he made a garrison posts, and he did not set up commanderies and counties. Thereupon he had the land of Hanzhong, but continued to declare to be vassal to Jin. Beginning of Tianxing [398 – 404], he dispatched envoys to court [i.e. the Wei court] with tribute. A decree used Sheng as Great General who Conquers the South and King of Chouchi. He was isolated and blocked off by Yao Xing, and did not mange to communicate annually with tribute and envoys. Sheng used his older brother's son Fu as General who Pacifies the South and Inspector of Liang# province, to defend Hanzhong. Middle of Liu Yu's Yongchu [420 – 422], ennobled Sheng as King of Wudu. Sheng died, his private posthumous title was Kind and Civil [huiwen] King. His son Xuan controlled the position.
Xuan, courtesy name Huangmei, was titled Great General who Conquers the West, Opening Office with Ceremony Similar to the Three Ministers, Inspector of Qin province, and King of Wudu. Though he was a declared vassal to Liu Yilong, he continued to defer to the symbol of Jin's Yongxi era. Later he started to use Yilong's Yuanjia calendar.
Earlier, Sheng spoke to Xuan, saying:
I am aged and already old, and will end as a subject of Jin. For you it is good to serve the Song emperor.
For that reason Xuan deferred to him.
Xuan was good at entertaining scholars, and was cherished by migrants and long-time [inhabitants]. 4th Year of Shiguang [427 AD], Shizu dispatched the Great Swan-geese Arranger, Gongsun Gui, to designate Xuan as Great General who Conquers the South, Chief Controller, Inspector of Liang# province, and King of Nanqin. Xuan sent up a petition to request to be aligned with inner vassals. Allowed it. Xuan died, his private posthumous title was Filial and Luminous [xiaozhao] King. His son Baozong controlled the position.
