It had been... several months? Maybe. Since the apocalypse had started. Her trip to america had started with disney world. Something fun. But that had very quickly ended with her dad being eaten alive in the middle of an overcrowded theme park. And now she was just trying to survive, wandering across a country that she wasn’t all that familiar with. She’d heard rumors. Rumours that gave her hope. Rumours that she strove to prove correct.
The president of the United States was trying to rebuild America. To Tess, it sounded true and almost inevitable. She was the president. She could do anything, right? Even if it took time. Tess just had to find her and maybe things could be easier.
Hope. Over many points over her adventure, it hadn’t felt all that hopeful and other times, the old world felt like it was just around the corner. Weeks on the road were grueling and days where she finally found a town were relieving. But people were selfish and scary. It always ended badly. But that hope always came back. The president wasn’t scary, right?
Somehow after months of hard detective work and walking, she was close. Each time she heard about the president, she grew closer. The next state over, the same state, just a few towns over. Finally... finally just a few miles away. The young girl ran those last few miles, despite how weak she was from malnutrition and dehydration and how often she stumbled.
When she finally caught the first sight of what she thought could be them, she was grabbed. In her excitement, she hadn’t really been paying as much attention as she should have been and surprisingly strong, rotting hands grabbed at her and shoved her down, pulling a scream out of her.

Harry Potter is a proud Hufflepuff and the older brother of Willam Potter, the saviour of the wizarding world. When the Triwizard Tournament comes to Hogwarts Harry plans to win. What he doesn't count on is his little brother's name coming out of the goblet as well. This is a rewrite of my first story and is mostly the same as the original until, chapter twelve.

Good Problem To Have
I currently have over 15 books in my TBR pile.  Well, there’s probably closer to 1500, but there’s 15 that I have put aside (either in e-book or regular book) that I’m planning to read in the next month.  The only negative thing I can say with this problem is that it makes me want to rush through my reading---to the point where I might not be enjoying them as much as I could/should.  So am I complaining?  Absolutely not.  Am I wishing I had more hours in the day?  ALWAYS!!
Five Survive by Holly Jackson
Tumblr media
Red and five of her friends are taking an RV to spring break---it’s a good way to save some money, and it’s a fun trip.  At least it’s fun until they find themselves a bit lost on a road, with no cell service to navigate forward.  When they attempt to turn around and go back, they get a flat tire, which turns into for flats, which turns into actual bullets flying past their heads as they run back to the RV for shelter.  It doesn’t take long for them to realize they’ve been targeted, and someone in the group isn’t really there for spring break.  Although this was a YA book, it’s a pretty decent thriller.  The characters were all relatable and I found myself quickly pulled into the story.  I definitely recommend, especially if you’re looking for something that wraps up nicely in the end without too many loose ends.
4 Stars
Special Note:  Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Drift by C. J. Tudor
Tumblr media
During a severe snowstorm, Hannah’s boarding school is evacuated and she finds herself trying to survive the bus crash in the middle of nothing but snow drifts.  In a separate storyline, Meg finds herself stranded with strangers in a cable car during a snowstorm, with no sign of help coming for them.  In a third POV, Carter is trekking back to the ski chalet where he lives and works, trying to get to safety before the storm becomes impassable.  How the story comes together for these three individuals, all facing dramatic life-or-death situations is absolutely riveting.  How are their lives related and who will survive in the end?  I wasn’t sure about this book at all, but it sucked me in and held me captive until the last page.  Highly recommend, especially for a snowy evening read!
5 Stars

Secrets Between Friends by Tracy Buchanan
Tumblr media
Liz is back in Easthaven, living with her mother again but this time with her two daughters in tow as she goes through a messy divorce.  When she finds out Tamsin is back as well and living at Lakewell Manor, Liz decides to reach out and try to rebuild the friendship she shared with her once best friend.  Their initial meeting is promising, only for Liz to return and find that another woman has taken Tamsin’s place, using her identity and living in her home.  For Liz to find out the real truth may cause her more problems than she can afford, but what happened to the real Tamsin?  I enjoyed this book, even if the characters annoyed me at times.  It held my attention and I thought some of the twists were well thought-out.  At other times, I found myself wanting to shake Liz and tell her to think…but I guess that’s how it is with real people sometimes, too.  😊
3 Stars

2, 5, 10 and/or 12 for the book asks!
2.  Did you re-read anything?  What?
I did actually re-read a lot more than I was expecting!  Some of the re-reads that stand out to me are:
- Gideon the Ninth by Tamsin Muir (which I actually read three times this year)
- The Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan (definitely a comfort read)
- Fangirl & Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell (absolute magic and amazingness)
- Made You Up & Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia (favourites and definitely comfort reads)
- Ninth House & the Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo (LOVE Ninth House - can’t wait for the sequel)
- The Throne of Glass Series by Sarah J. Maas (Compelling, but I definitely got burnt out on the story and characters the more I read - but I love the universe building).
- 14, The Fold, & Paradox Bound by Peter Clines (I really enjoy these for their Lovecraftian/counter-Lovecraft elements)
- The Wayward Children Series by Seanan McGuire (This series is amazing and I can’t wait for the next one to come out in 2021!).
Wow, okay, I re-read a lot - 2020 was a year for reading old favourites for sure.
5.  What genre did you read the most of?
Definitely fantasy/sci-fi/horror (as is standard for me).
10. What was your favourite new release of the year?
Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I pre-ordered this one and was absolutely devastated when the release date was pushed back.  I was so excited to finally get it.  AMAZING.  Can’t wait for Alecto the Ninth!
12. Any books that disappointed you?
Ooooo this is a tough one.  I hate saying that books disappoint me because I love books and I think almost every story has value.  However, having said that, there were a couple that I feel like I was a bit disappointed in.
- The Old Haunts series - I bought the single issues for this (so invested about 5 months), and it just floundered and I felt like it had so much promise and just fell flat.
- These Witches Don’t Burn by Isabel Sterling - another one that I thought had such an amazing premise but then just fell flat for me.
- Honestly, also Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas (just the first one) - I just didn’t find any of the characters relatable.  They were too perfect and didn’t seem real but I did think that they got better as the series went on.
So, I love talking about books haha.

Super Short Reviews: winter / spring TV part two:
The Letter for the King (Netflix) – This moves so fast I almost got whiplash.  But I guess thats what the kids need this days – its got to go go go just like a video game. Amir Wilson (lead) is easy to root for even if the back story and surrounding politics of the world aren’t quite clear.
World on Fire (PBS) – Will I ever get tired of WWII stories?  Not if they’re good!   This one starts with Helen Hunt’s broadcasting as an American journalist in Poland just as Nazi Germany is taking occupation. No Spolier: Things get a lost worse after that.
Motherland: Fort Salem (Freeform / Hulu) – Somewhere between Hunger Games and Legacies lies a tale of women’s empowerment through a bizarre mix of witchcraft and military.   I could not connect with any of the leads but I’m definitely not the target age group.  Taylor Hickson reminds me of Natalie Dormer.
Council of Dads (NBC) – BLECH.  You cant just re-create the magic of “This Is Us” by throwing a bunch of people together.   Perfect example of when good actors (Michele Weaver, Michael O’Neill, J. August Richards, Clive Standon) get wasted on a bad show.
Spinning Out (Netflix) – Perfect for a hot day, as these people are either always in snow, or in ice, or ON the ice.  Kaya Scodelario from the Maze Runner movies and Willow Shields from the Hunger Games movies team up as sister ice skaters with a love / rivalry relationship who are constantly trying to navigate the campy craziness of their mom played by January Jones.  AND Johnny Weir is in it!!
Belgravia (Epix) – DirecTv keeps telling me I get Epix, but Epix keeps telling me I do not.  BAH!  But in the first episode at least, Harriet Walter and Tamsin Greig mine every second of delicious uppity British awkwardness... which creates a weird level of tension that will leave British period drama lovers hanging off the edge of their settee.
Reprisal (Hulu) – Another Robert Rodriguez rip off with a dash of Tarantino and a splash of Mad Men. Big thumbs down from me.
The Neighbour (Netflix) – Spain. Random dude gets random super hero powers.  Skip it.  The thing about comedy is that you need to root for the main fellow even if he does silly things or makes bad choices.  With this dude there’s just nothing to root for.  Adrian Pino is quite funny as the sidekick and I hope he writes something better for himself soon.
Baptise (PBS) – Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes.   Fantastic international cast: Tcheky Karyo, Barbara Sarafian, Tom Hollander, Talisa Garcia, Jessica Raine, Trystan Gravelle...  Fantastic binge-able story.  Oooooooo I hope there’s more.
Dracula (Netflix) – UK Mini-Series. Goes from horror, to good drama, to excellent camp.  Highly entertaining and I highly recommend it.  (Harkour:  “You’re a monster!”  Dracula:  “And you’re a lawyer.  Nobody’s perfect.”)
DC’s Stargirl (CW) – Another BLECH. Very Lite PG YA summer fare.  I don’t know who approved this casting but its a huge missed opportunity in regards to diversity and inclusion.  Sure I guess its fun that she’s a girl but she looks like she’s one jello shot away from being a stripper.  Buffy did the blonde pretty girl thing 20 years ago and no one ever needs to do it again.
Endlings (Hulu) – Really weird / odd Sci-Fi for the kiddos (if they can figure out whats going on.)
October Faction (Netflix) –  Three episodes went by as I was doing other things and then suddenly I realised, oh wow, I still don’t know what this is about?  The show should have focused on the teenagers (played perfectly by Aurora Burghart and Gabriel Darku)  but instead droned on and on following the parents around.  Too bad.
Hightown (Starz) – Some (bad) shows start slowly like a tease… this (great) show takes off like a rocket and you know its gonna land hard.  If you’re  lucky enough to get Showtime I suspect its a binge watch.  Monica Raymund is FIRE as the lead. Hope to see a lot more strong women characters like this in the future.
NOT REVIEWED:
Deadwater Fell (AcornTV)
Liar (Sundance)
Yanxi Palace: Princess Adventures (Netflix)
Run (HBO)
Paradise Lost (Spectrum)
Sanctuary (Sundance Now)
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels (Showtime)
Betty (HBO)
The Dress Up Gang (TBS.com) – made in 2017 but never aired until now.
Trying (AppleTV+)
Gold Digger (Acorn)

Vive la Résistance

by Viktorella
Some time in late 1979, Peter Pettigrew and Benjy Fenwick were spying on a Death Eater meeting. They got caught by Voldemort himself, and each was given an ultimatum: spy or die. Benjy Fenwick was a Gryffindor through and through, and proudly faced his death at the Dark Lord's wand. Seeing his friend die shook Peter Pettigrew's resolve, but Lily and Alice had both recently announced pregnancies and he chose to protect their children in the only way he knew he could. He died on 15th December 1979, and all of his friends mourned the loss. On the 3rd July 1980, Sybill Trelawney was interviewed for the post of Divination Professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She didn't get the job. Later in the same month, the Ministry fell to the Death Eaters, and Albus Dumbledore was exiled. Lucius Malfoy was installed as the new Minister for Magic, and other Death Eaters placed in charge of the school. Voldemort had taken over Wizarding Britain. Only purebloods and some halfbloods could now school at Hogwarts. Muggleborns were schooled at lesser institutions dotted around the country, along with the other halfbloods. The Order of the Phoenix split into cells and went underground (figuratively).

And then, there were the mistakes. — Tamsin Riddle was born, and the world held its breath. A single child who would hold so much power, who would lead so many people. Some things couldn’t change, but Tamsin hated losing and loved her family, and she would do her very best to make sure that they got the ending that they deserved. Her story is about blood family and found family, parents and allies; it’s about loss and growing up and finding yourself and love, and doing whatever it takes to win without ever losing anything.

When Harry first saw the girls, naked and hair loose and dancing amongst one another like wild women, her eyes went wide with the untamed beauty of it, the raw power of it, and even though she'd never admit it her heart trembled in fear borne from her ignorance.
These looked like wild beasts, faeries and demons from old legends and fairytales, their dance like an ancient offering. They looked like power, and there, amongst them danced Tamsin Riddle, both a part of the circle and apart from it.

The last Frick concert, Tamsin Waley-Cohen, violin and Huw Watkins, piano was held on Sunday. Joyce Bodig is a long time Frick employee and a one woman organization who arranges all the concerts. We were treated to Watkins’ composition, Spring, Beethoven and Debussy sonatas and an encore of “It Ain’t Necessarily So”.  An odd choice, I thought. I never appreciate opera singers singing jazz and I don’t appreciate classical musicians swinging through popular music.
On Wednesday, a friend and I went to Alice Elliot’s documentary, “The Collector of Bedford Street”. It was shown at the Greenwich House Music School, 46 Barrow St. The Collector is Larry Selman, a neighborhood character. He’s endearing and helpless, a great one for making many phone calls. The community united in caring for him since his elder brother was failing. We follow Larry through his day, often collecting money for various charities. His NYC sense of humor is appreciated by neighbors and tradesmen. It’s a close knit community.  In a Q & A, after the screening,  Alice praised her

neighbors, giving them a great deal of credit for the  documentary’s success. She talked about the heavy equipment that was and is still used to label the film industry as a guy’s world. Women couldn’t lift and lug the gear. No more! With the small digital cameras, women have as much opportunity to making a film as a man does.
Down Memory Lane: Being on Barrow Street which is next to Bedford, is where my old friend Kit Davidson had lived. Kit made documentaries and like Alice Elliot, one of his, 3rd Ave. El , was nominated for an academy award.
I wanted to see Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth so off I went to The Morgan. It was much less crowded than the opening celebration which was filled with hobbits, elves, dwarves and wizards. The second floor exhibit has lovely original Tolkien drawings. The Morgan has a Gilbert and Sullivan Collection. These posters are part of the archive. A plus is a light airy lunch space: divine lemonade spiked with ginger and scrumptious avocado toast. But they have to bring back the deviled eggs!

The Dramaturgy behind the Crone: Alison Skilbeck @ Edfringe 2017
Jacqui Garbett for Hint of LIME Productions Presents THE POWER BEHIND THE CRONEA play celebrating Shakespeare's older women written & performed by Alison Skilbeck ASSEMBLY GEORGE SQUARE 3 – 28 August 12pm (60mins) " One of the inequities of Shakespeare is once you get to my age there are few great women's roles,"Dame Helen Mirren 1983
Professor Artemis Turret thinks otherwise. The enthusiastic Shakespearean scholar is on a mission to correct the assumption that women of a certain age are not served well by The Bard. As she embarks on her final illustrated lecture to Enfield U3A, the professor hopes against hope that her old chum national treasure Dame Bunti Smart will make her entrance to perform the characters and help her prove her point.
What was the inspiration for this performance?I think Helen Mirren said 'there are no good parts in Shakespeare for older women', and I thought I'd see if I could refute that. I know that suddenly women, quite rightly, are taking the men's roles - the wonderful all-female company led by Harriet Walter, Glenda J doing Lear, Tamsin Greig, 'Malvolia', Gillian Bevan, Cymbeline - but I wanted to look at the actual older female roles.  Which of course were played by men! Is performance still a good space for the public discussion of ideas? Well yes; but I think there's a distinction to be made between more openly polemical theatre and theatre where ideas creep in; you might suddenly realise you've seen a play with only women in it , but no-one was tub-thumping.  My play certainly isn't a 'public discussion'... you make of it what you will, in terms of ideas...
But the theatre does have a vital role, maybe particularly now, and is unique as a present-moment experience and place where people come together, to tell and hear stories. How did you become interested in making performance?I'm not sure what this terminology means. I have been an actor for over 40 years; I have also directed, particularly students at many drama schools, and latterly I have written too. This play is directed by Tim Hardy, and between us I suppose we've 'made performance'.
If you mean the joy of creating something from scratch, well,  I set myself a challenge to write 4 linked monologues some years ago with my first one-woman show 'Are There More Of You?', and I have sort of gone on from there, with an amazing real-life character in 'Mrs Roosevelt Flies To London' ( Edinburgh 2016 and still touring) and now 'The Power Behind The Crone'. Is there any particular approach to the making of the show?I did the research, deciding which Shakespearean characters - older ladies - most appealed; in this case I also hit on the idea of a framing character, Prof Artemis Turret, passionate academic and one-time student actress, and blended the two.
Then I learnt the lines. And got directed - remembering that less is more all the time. And the speeches got cut a bit, and shaped, and I decided how to play the main women and also the people they are talking to, if need be... It grows, and then you prune. You cut some of the jokes..! Does the show fit with your usual productions? It is simpler than 'Mrs Roosevelt'; I have deliberately kept the production to a minimum - hardy any lighting and sound effects, and only such 'costume' as the Professor would have with her, when her chum, Dame Bunti Smart, who was supposed to come along and do all the speeches in her lecture, lets her down.
Obviously it's similar, in that it's just me and I play lots of people, turning on a sixpence to do so: in my first show, 4 characters, in Mrs Roosevelt about 27 as well as her!...It's different obviously in that half of it is Shakespeare's words. Oh, and it's just a bit shorter, an hour. What do you hope that the audience will experience?Oh - the sheer brilliance of Shakespeare: the way the words show us who people are; the way he can mix comedy and tragedy in an instant, the way the words tell an actor how to do it...
I'd also love them to see that theatre, at best, IS 'two planks and a passion' and that all you need is the actor and the writer's words -  and that to create character you do not have to go away and look at your navel in a cupboard, but can, as I say 'turn on a sixpence', using the words, and your body, voice, and imagination in an instant, in full view.
Also I hope they'll laugh, cry, and in particular have fun with Artemis and the imagined group she's talking to - the keen students of the U3A..  What strategies did you consider towards shaping this audience experience? I am not sure what this means - sounds like plotting! If any 'strategy' I suppose - creating the frame of Artemis and the evening class..but that emerged anyway, as I said, and was not a conscious ploy.
There is one tiny technical, theatrical trick, which I won't give away here, which I have permitted myself..but even that is not essential to the whole. I really want people to make up their own minds, and hearts. The Power Behind The Crone is a new solo show written and performed by acclaimed actress Alison Skilbeck. Taking the audience on an often comic but always absorbing adventure through some of the best roles for older women in classic drama, Alison illuminates and celebrates seven of Shakespeare’s older women characters, from the vengeful Queen Margaret in Richard III, to the outrageous Mistress Quickly in Henry IV and V, and the outspoken Paulina in The Winter's Tale. Drawing upon her experience both as an actress touring Shakespeare in the USA with Actors From the London Stage, and as a director specialising in Shakespeare as an Associate Teacher at RADA, Silbeck sets out to show that, for women, there is often ‘the benefit of seniory’ when it comes to The Bard.
"A consummate performer weaving her way effortlessly through her own finely woven web of fascinating material." Alan Ayckbourn
Alison Skilbeck's enormously varied stage career has taken her to the West End and all over the UK, and on tour to the USA and Europe: early on she created roles in six Ayckbourn premieres at Scarborough. Her solo play Are There More of You? received 5 star reviews, and has been acclaimed in Ireland, Sri Lanka and the US. Alison's television work includes Sherlock Homes, The Beiderbecke Affair, Miss Marple, Head Over Heels, Doctor Who, Soldier Soldier, New Tricks, and Midsomer Murders. On radio she has worked with Simon Brett, the late Don Taylor, and Ellen Dryden. She was also Polly Perks in The Archers, until the character was killed off! Two recent projects have been Wimpole Street, the award winning web series, and the pod cast sitcom series Wooden Overcoats. She completed an extremely successful run of her acclaimed production Mrs Roosevelt Flies to London at Assembly on the 2016 Edinburgh Fringe, and will tour it this year. Director Tim Hardy trained at RADA, where he has been an Associate Teacher for 20 years, directing Shakespeare on summer courses and on courses for American actors, and serving on the audition panel. He has directed extensively for the English Theatres in Vienna and Frankfurt, and at many American universities, notably Notre Dame and Illinois Wesleyan.
His long and varied acting career includes seasons at the RSC, including Peter Brook's Marat/Sade in London and New York, Simon Gray'sMelon at the Haymarket Theatre, and Peter Hall's Lysistrata in the West End and Athens, as well as many tours of the US in Shakespeare with Actors From The London Stage. His two one-man shows, The Trials of Galileo by Nic Young, and At the Mountains of Madness by H.P Lovecraft tour extensively throughout the UK, Eire, and America. His TV work includes Jesus in The Son of Man for American television, Galileo in Days that Shook The World, Eastenders, Midsomer Murders, and Casualty 1909. Films include Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Book Blitz: Trials and Tribulations (Interview + Excerpt)
This is my stop during the book blitz for Trials and Tribulations, these are two anthologies set in Faith Hunter’s Rogue Mage universe. This book blitz is organized by Lola's Blog Tours. The book blitz runs from 20 February till 5 March. You can view the tour schedule here. Trials (Rogue Mage Anthology #1) By Faith Hunter, Diana Francis, Misty Massey, Lou J Berger, Ken Schrader, Spike Y Jones, Christina Stiles, Tamsin Silver and Melissa McArthur Genre: Anthology/ Urban Fantasy Age category: Adult Release Date: November 28, 2016 Blurb: 21 Vignettes and Short Stories set in Faith Hunter’s World of Thorn St. Croix.
The Rogue Mage world began long ago, when the epic battle between the High Host and the Darkness was won and lost. TRIALS takes fans of Thorn St. Croix into the past, before the opening pages of BLOODRING. These stories, set in Faith Hunter's Rogue Mage world, are adventures with new characters and old, facing dangers unimaginable. And they must save the world all over again.
If you ever wondered what happened between seraphs, kylen, second-unforeseen, mages, seraph-touched, spawn, humans, dragons, and their creatures before the series, now is your chance to delve deeper and wider. TRIALS features new short stories from nine authors—including Faith Hunter—and vignettes from the Rogue Mage role playing game. You can find Trials on Goodreads
You can buy Trials here: - Amazon - Barnes & Noble Interview: Lucienne Diver  1. What was it like to play in the Rogue Mage world? At first it was incredibly intimidating. Faith is such an amazing writer, and the world she’s created is so rich and textured that it was a challenge to jump in and feel that I was doing it justice.  But because the world is so well-realized, it really lives and breathes, and once I got a handle on the approach I wanted to take, it was a lot of fun. Who doesn’t want to write a kylen? Or the woman with a dangerous secret she’s afraid he’s come to expose? Who doesn’t want to fight the good fight in a post-apocalyptic world? 2. Was it hard to develop your character within the confines of the Rogue Mage world? Not at all. Aoife (pronounced ee-fa), my heroine, is an itinerant storyteller and something a little more.  She’ll carry packages and messages for the right price. Not smuggling per se, but not necessarily things that are approved by the Administration of the ArchSeraphs.  She’s such a product of her upbringing.  Aoife grew up in an Enclave where her parents were in service, so she’s got a healthy distain for neomages who treated her and her family as though they were lesser because they were only human.  As soon as she was of age, she left to make her own way in the world, but with some specialized knowledge, like bataireacht, the Irish stick-fighting taught to her by her father, which is very handy in the dangerous Post-Ap world Faith has created.  Put Aoife in the same mule train with a second or third generation kylen (the product of a union between a seraph and a mage or human) and you have instant tension. Add to that the mysterious parcel she carries and dangers stalking their caravan, bring things to a head, and Aoife discovers where she really stands in the grand scheme of things. 3. Tell us about your character. What species, etc. I jumped the gun on this question above, but the short version: Aoife describes herself as “standard-issue human” and is proud of it. 4. When your story was finished, how did you feel about your character and story? I really love Aoife. I know we’re not supposed to put too much of ourselves into our characters, but I identify with her in so many ways, from the skepticism and continuing evaluation of beliefs to not being a joiner. I love that I was able to use my time in Ireland and the nature of the place and people themselves to inform her development, and I’m very pleased with the way she turned out. I hope my story will resonate with others the way it resonates with me. 5. Tell us about your other projects. My latest novel, Faultlines, is a young adult thriller dealing with some serious issues that are close to my heart. In short, six months ago, Vanessa's best friend Lisa changed, pushing everyone away, Vanessa included.  Now she's committed suicide.  As Vanessa struggles to come to terms with Lisa’s death and to reconstruct the last months of her life, someone begins taking revenge against those he or she perceives drove Lisa to suicide.  Everyone thinks it's Vanessa, the former best friend and some begin their retaliation. As vengeance, counterattacks and clues mount, it becomes a race to the truth…and hopefully not to the death. In addition to Faultlines, I’ve written the Latter-Day Olympians urban fantasy series featuring a heroine who can, quite literally, stop men in their tracks, and the Vamped young adult series featuring a heroine who goes from chic to eek when she becomes one of the undead (think Clueless meets Buffy).  My short stories and essays that have appeared in the Strip-Mauled and Fangs for the Mammaries anthologies edited by Esther Friesner (Baen Books), in Dear Bully: 70 Authors Tell Their Stories (HarperTeen) and the anthology Kicking It edited by Faith Hunter and Kalayna Price (Roc Books). The Trials Authors: Faith Hunter Diana Francis Misty Massey Lou J Berger Ken Schrader Spike Y Jones Christina Stiles Tamsin Silver Melissa McArthur Excerpt: Kicking the snow from his boots, Zadok took a calming breath and faced the small house, trying to project the confidence of a seasoned healer, rather than the fear of an acolyte on his first solo cure. His smile was stiff on his frozen face, the air so cold and still that his flesh felt brittle, as if it would crack and fall from his bones should he move wrong. The short trip had been brutal, his contingent of six guides and fighters more accustomed to the vicious cold and hard pace than a mage who had lived his entire life in the comfort and ease of the Seattle Enclave. He’d gained an appreciation for the humans who lived in the frozen wastes, losing his snide sense of superiority, which had been based solely on his mage abilities. He never would have survived the short trip without the assistance of the others. He glanced at the human woman, Sarai. She’d saved his life when he’d stepped off the track and crashed through the snow into the creek beneath. The driving snow had already drained Zadok's mage energies dangerously low, forcing him to draw constantly on his prime amulet to fight it, and he'd lost precious body heat to the icy water. Not even his amulets could fight off hypothermia. While Howard, a mule, started a fire, Sarai had activated all of his Healing amulets, stripping him down and crawling into a sleeping bag with him… naked… sharing her body warmth with him… offering him her life energies. He’d accepted the gift of her life, stealing the energies of a human in ways no Earth mage was permitted. Now she smiled at him, encouragement in her glance, seemingly hinting that some bond still lingered between them. Zadok nodded once at her and opened the door of the fortified building. Stepping inside the thick stone walls, he took in the dwelling with a sweeping glance. Perhaps twenty humans were gathered around a huge fireplace in the large room. Except for a table before the fire, the furniture had been shoved against the plastered walls. On the table was a blanket-covered form, a body racked by shivers. The gathered humans looked up, fear and stress grooving their faces. Zadok took a second calming breath and the stench of rotting flesh, old urine, and feces met him. Fear threaded through him, knotting his muscles, causing him to pant. Am I too late? He gulped, frozen on the threshold. Gently, Sarai pushed him into the room and closed the door behind them, leaving the others to set up perimeters. As if she were his servant, she took the satchel from his numb fingers and whispered, “You can do this. I have faith in you.” Louder, she said, “The healer Zadok has arrived from Seattle Enclave to work an incantation of healing on your kirk elder, Judith. He requires a surface for his implements, a cup of warming chai, and space to work.” Within moments, the humans had helped him from his winter gear, brought him hot chai laced with brandy, placed a table before him for his mage amulets, and eased the body from the tabletop to the floor, creating a space wide enough for him to work a healing circle.
