Who's Dracula? - Ch 2
The party was great and you all had a lot of fun - even Gibbs! It's hard to believe. Unfortunately, you didn't see Dracula again, and neither did anyone else, and no one had any idea who it could have been.
Now you were lying in your bed and couldn't sleep, because you couldn't stop thinking about him.
Dancing with Gibbs was like floating on clouds and it was wonderful to lie in his arms and be led across the dance floor by him, but dancing with Dracula was also fantastic.
But who was he?
You had never seen him before, but everything about him still seemed familiar to you.
It was nerve-racking and sleep was out of the question.
Your thoughts just wouldn't stop circling around your mysterious dancer. He was tall, muscular, silent and his smile was stunning. He seemed strong, but led you very gently through the dances. With these characteristics he had a certain resemblance to the boss, how could you have overlooked someone like that?
Since you couldn't sleep anyway, you finally got up with a sigh, took a shower, made yourself a coffee and finally drove to the lab.
Your colleague and best friend Abby should also be arriving soon and then you could talk in detail about the previous evening.
And indeed, as soon as you arrived, Abby came into the lab and ran straight towards you. Completely excited and totally beside herself, she asked you: "So? Tell me. How was the party? It was the best party ever, don't you think?"
"Yes! It was incredible!" you agreed immediately.
"Absolutely! Even Gibbs was there!" Abby exclaimed enthusiastically.
"Oh yes, and he even danced with me," you said with a mischievous grin. And then it came:
"And I met someone. He must be a new colleague. He was tall, had brown eyes, shoulder-length brown hair, was dressed as Dracula and dancing with him was like floating on clouds....”
Your facial expression was absolutely excited and dreamy as you described it and Abby jumped and danced for joy because she was in the know and knew who he was, but she hadn't told you yet.
Instead, she asked you to bring test results up to the team, because she had to supervise a test and the colleagues urgently needed the results.
When you arrived at the office, only Tony was sitting there. The rest hadn't arrived yet.
“Hey Tony, did you go through being here at this time?” you greeted him.
He laughed: “Sure, how do you know that?”
With a wink, you leaned over his desk and answered with a wink: “From experience.”
Then Tony put on his winning smile and asked:
“Well, how was your dance with the Prince of Darkness?”
“It was wonderful, just fantastic!” you raved to him uninhibitedly. That was a godsend for him. He also leaned in your direction, grinned lasciviously and said: “Oh, you like bad boys. Do you want to tell Uncle Doctor about it?”
You simply couldn't pass up this opportunity to annoy him. You took his tie and slowly let it slide through your hands. Seductively you whispered in his ear: “Oh yesssss. You know, when I'm lying alone in my bed at night and have nothing on but my lingerie, I wish that...”
You didn't get any further, because suddenly you both got a head-slap along with the grim question: “Don't you have anything to do?”
Gibbs was standing behind you and seemed anything but enthusiastic and after you both turned to him, he gave you a stern look.
“Gibbs…” you started, but he left you standing there, went to his desk, sat down and started reading a file.
You looked to Tony for help, but he turned to his computer and muttered in an insulted tone: “So much for the Prince of Darkness. That person definitely knows Gibbs and has taken him as a role model.”
That made you laugh again. The similarities were not lost on you and Gibbs as Dracula? It really couldn't be more fitting.
The idea itself was actually interesting. The always taciturn but attractive and at the same time mysterious Dracula and on the other hand Gibbs... yes, the analogy was something.
At least it distracted you for a moment from pondering who your mysterious dancer was.
But you almost forgot to hand in the test results and since the boss was there by now, you went to him, handed him the papers with a smile and then walked towards the elevator to the lab...
... and unnoticed by you, two steel blue eyes followed you, watching you closely.
(To be continued...in the last Chapter 3.)

can you go into a whole tangent about rain world naming pretty please. :D
I wanna hear your thoughts!
SURE THING! (spoilers below) (also this isn't a proper essay so I get to be messy 👍)
So first of all. Rain world naming conventions seem to follow a somewhat consistent pattern, but the pattern varies.
Let's divide them up by types for iterators specifically: Type A names are those that involve a number, measurement, or count of objects. Type B names involve concepts and actions. Now we can list all the known iterators (since iterators started this tangent) in those categories.
Type A: Five Pebbles, Seven Red Suns, Sliver of Straw (Implied 1-count), Epoch of Clouds (implied time measurement)
Type B: Looks To The Moon, No Significant Harassment, Unparalleled Innocence, Chasing Wind, Pleading Intellect, Wandering Omen, Gazing Stars, Secluded Instinct
There's a few things we could gather from this, notably that "Type B" names are more prevalent, at least in this list. Sometimes these particular names are characteristic of their owners, such as Gazing Stars holding a fascination with ascension, while Secluded Instinct is optimistic and excited about the future. Which to me thematically opposes the whole mission statement of iterators, and thus it's a bit of a hidden (unusual, taboo) instinct to have hope. Other times these names seem ironic, as seen with Unparalleled Innocence's apparently mean spirited nature. Looks to the Moon feels like a happy accident with how fitting it is, since she's the Local Sector's "Big Sis Moon" and her peers look up to her. There's a possibility they named her Looks to the Moon because their city would be resting on top of her can which would have it face the moon.
To note, Moon and Wandering Omen are both older superstructures. "Type B" names might be tied to more antiquated models of iterators, but there's not much evidence to support it. Something my roommate @acewarden (incredible brainstorming & lore discussion pal) mentioned offhand is that Five Pebbles goes by Erratic Pulse as a communication alias, and that if the name seniority thing is true, he could be trying to seem older and more experienced. But again, that's conjecture.
"Type A" names are a bit of a mystery, but could be tied to a date, an event, a location... In particular I'm reminded of ancient Nahua naming conventions, which you can read about here. Keep in mind this article includes old excerpts/quotes from a missionary, so there is some dated and insensitive language, but it has examples of what I'm reminded of:
Names referring to particular time units/periods/seasons eg Maxihuitl (“Five Years”), Xopantzin (“Venerable Raining Season”)
Anyhow, the article supposes that these names not only marked the day a naming ceremony took place, but the potential fortune of the individual being named due to the date. I have to wonder if there was a similar reasoning for these "Type A" names. some Nahua names related to a day on a specific intersection of their calendar cycle. In Rain World, THE Cycle was an unavoidable and religiously significant aspect of the ancients lives, I don't see why they wouldn't also construct their naming scheme on a similar principle.
In fact I definitely see aesthetic influence from ancient Mexica art in how the ancients depict and dress themselves, and it's not unlikely the developers pulled from it for their inspiration. Take these for example:

Side note just for me, I have a sneaking suspicion the way dates are logged in Rain World is similar to some things I noticed while looking into the Mexica Calendar but maybe that's a reach. I won't dive into it here EDIT: I couldn't find anything satisfactory so I'm dropping that theory
Now we can take a look at the Echoes, which were once ancients. Since they were the ones to build iterators in the first place, their names would inform their super computer's names. Of course. (of course.)
Note the difference in these names, they are either in two distinct parts and/or reflect a "positional" intermediary term. Ancient's canonically had a very complex and hierarchical naming scheme, with many variations of honorifics and titles that were always formally addressed in their complete entirety, but for echoes we get the base names. (Also note I'll use a ; to break up the names so they're more convenient to list.)
Echoes: Nineteen Spades; Endless Reflections, Four Needles under Plentiful Leaves, Droplets upon Five Large Droplets, A Bell; Eighteen Amber Beads, Six Grains of Gravel; Mountains Abound, Two Sprouts; Twelve Brackets, Twelve Beads among Burning Skies, Distant Towers upon Cracked Earth, Rhinestones beneath Shattered Glass, Eight Spots on a Blind Eye
Note that we see vastly more "Type A" names! Additionally there's a prevalence of size or measurement related terms that emphasize some kind of grandiosity. Things like Abound, Large, Endless, Plentiful.... I believe that, while the literal counts (Five, Six, Eight, etc.) are indicators of something specific, the adjectives here sound like they serve a fortune bearing and/or self-aggrandizing purpose. lol.
One thing I do notice is that some families? groups? in the ancient society (as outlined by the pearls) have numbers or concepts tied to them. Such as the house of Eight or the house of Braids. One ancient is noted as being "of pure Braid Heritage" However these are not included in the base name, and are instead tacked on as a separate title, indicating the names themselves are not of familial origin.
Let's break some of these Echo names into their constituent parts. (With color)
Red being the measurement itself, orange being the object that conveys the measurement/units of measurement, purple being an intermediary term, green being a secondary location/object noun, blue being what I'll call the "grand element."
Six Grains of Gravel; Mountains Abound
Twelve Beads among Burning Skies
A Bell; Eighteen Amber Beads
Distant Towers upon Cracked Earth
Four Needles under Plentiful Leaves
You could argue "A Bell" is instead read "A Bell" but I DIGRESS!
Not every name has a measurement association, but they do consistently have some kind of object. I'm led to wonder if some names are earned or altered later in life. Maybe they have absolutely nothing to do with a calendar cycle and instead reflect the status, history, and hierarchy of the supposed individual. Come to think of it, that would make sense. Nineteen Spades; Endless Reflections recounts they had progeny, and well, what are children if not a reflection of an organism into the future? Twelve Beads among Burning Skies says that they were "an angry fool." I find Six Grains of Gravel; Mountains Abound evocative in the sense that, maybe as an individual they are "Gravel" but their family/accomplishments/legacy is so bountiful it's considered mountainous. But that's a stretch.
I would be remiss not to mention my favourite ancients. The following are Pearl excerpts of their full name and associated titles.
"In this vessel is the living memories of Seventeen Axes, Fifteen Spoked Wheel, of the House of Braids, Count of 8 living blocks, Counselor of 16, Grand Master of the Twelfth Pillar of Community, High Commander of opinion group Winged Opinions, of pure Braid heritage, voted Local Champion in the speaking tournament of 1511.090, Mother, Father and Spouse, Spiritual Explorer and honorary member of the Congregation of Balanced Ambiguity. Artist, Warrior, and Fashion Legend." ((Deep Magenta pearl, Shaded Citadel))
And my all time favourite:
"It is with Honor I, Eight Suns-Countless Leaves, of the House of Six Wagons, Count of no living blocks, Counselor of 2, Duke of 1, Humble Secretary of the Congregation of Never Dwindling Righteousness, write this to You." ((The rest of this one is really funny, please read the Deep Pink farm arrays pearl if you have time.))
To come full circle, to me, iterator names sound like they're composed of only half of an ancient's name. Make of that what you will, I think it says something about the two way parent-child relationship between ancients and iterators. A more diminutive/simplified name for their creations? Likely. A shortened name for a respected figure and venerated grounds? Also likely. Shrugs.
All this to say that without access to more concrete concepts from the ancient's society, we're left with a lot of guesswork. Still super fun to pick apart, though!
#correct me if I've made any factual errors.#rain world#rain world spoilers#downpour spoilers#rain world headcanons#phew I had to do my homework#forgive me if I missed something haha. there are so many pearls#sleep rambles#ask#also thank you for asking!!!!!!!

Breakthrough enables measurement of local dark matter density using direct acceleration measurements
Dr. Sukanya Chakrabarti, the Pei-Ling Chan Endowed Chair in the College of Science at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), and her team have pioneered the use of gravitational acceleration measurements of binary pulsars to help illuminate just how much dark matter there is in the Milky Way galaxy and where it resides.
Their previous study promised that as the number of data points grows with the addition of many more binary pulsars, the galaxy's gravitational field could be mapped with great precision, including clumps of galactic dark matter.
Now Chakrabarti and her team, including first-author Dr. Tom Donlon, a UAH postdoctoral associate, and UAH physics undergraduate student Sophia Vanderwaal, have published a new study that for the first time details a way to advance this field by using solitary pulsars instead. The paper is available on the arXiv preprint server.
"When we first began this work in 2021 and did the follow-up publication last year, our sample was composed of pairs of millisecond pulsars—binary millisecond pulsars," Chakrabarti explains. A binary millisecond pulsar is a pulsar with a short rotation period that orbits another star. "However, most pulsars are not in pairs," the researcher notes.
"Most of them are solitary. In this new work, we show how to effectively double the number of pulsars we can use to constrain dark matter in the galaxy by rigorously using solitary pulsars to measure galactic accelerations."
"Constraining dark matter" means limiting the possible properties and characteristics of dark matter by analyzing observational data, essentially narrowing down the range of potential explanations for what dark matter could be, based on how it interacts with other matter and affects the universe's structure on different scales.
"Because it's a larger sample, we now have a breakthrough," Chakrabarti says. "We are able to measure the local dark matter density using direct acceleration measurements for the first time. And on average we find that there's less than 1 kilogram of dark matter in a volume of that of the Earth. If you compare that to millions of kilograms of gold produced every year—you can see that pound-per-pound, dark matter is more valuable than gold."
Dark matter is thought to comprise over 80% of all matter in the cosmos but is invisible to conventional observation, because it seemingly does not interact with light or electromagnetic fields.
Charting galactic 'wobble'
"In my earlier work, I used computer simulations to show that since the Milky Way interacts with dwarf galaxies, stars in the Milky Way feel a very different tug from gravity if they're below the disk or above the disk," Chakrabarti says. "The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC)—a biggish dwarf galaxy—orbits our own galaxy, and when it passes near the Milky Way, it can pull some of the mass in the galactic disk towards it—leading to a lopsided galaxy with more mass on one side, so it feels the gravity more strongly on one side.
"It's almost like the galaxy is wobbling—kind of like the way a toddler walks, not entirely balanced yet. So this asymmetry or disproportionate effect in the pulsar accelerations that arises from the pull of the LMC is something that we were expecting to see. Here, with the larger sample of pulsar accelerations, we are actually able to measure this effect for the first time."
"The incredibly strong magnetic field of the pulsars will twist and coil on itself as the pulsar spins, which leads to a kind of friction, like rubbing your hands together," adds Donlon. "Pulsars also emit particles at very high speeds, which beams away energy. These effects lead to the pulsar spinning more slowly as time goes on, and currently there isn't any way to calculate how much this happens from existing theory."
This phenomenon is called "magnetic braking," the process by which a star loses angular momentum (rotational speed) due to its magnetic field capturing charged particles from its surface and flinging them outward as a stellar wind, effectively taking away some of the star's spin with them. Modeling this process turned out to be key to moving forward.
"Because of this spindown, we were initially—in 2021 and in our follow-up 2024 paper—forced to use only pulsars in binary systems to calculate accelerations, because the orbits aren't affected by magnetic braking," Donlon says. "With our new technique, we are able to estimate the amount of magnetic braking with high accuracy, which allows us to also use individual pulsars to obtain accelerations."
In astronomy, magnetic spindown rates refer to the rate at which a celestial object, particularly a rotating neutron star (like a pulsar), slows down its rotation due to the loss of rotational energy through magnetic dipole radiation.
Through mapping the acceleration field of the galaxy, it should eventually be possible to determine the distribution of dark matter in the Milky Way with fairly high accuracy, the new study reports.
"In essence, these new techniques now enable measurements of very small accelerations that arise from the pull of dark matter in the galaxy," Chakrabarti says. "In the astronomy community, we have been able to measure the large accelerations produced by black holes around visible stars and stars near the galactic center for some time now.
"We can now move beyond the measurement of large accelerations to measurements of tiny accelerations at the level of about 10 cm/s/decade—10 cm/s is the speed of a crawling baby."

On this last point, the law of accelerating returns is in a race with entropy, and it had better start delivering the promised salvation soon. All this computation is expected to consume one-fifth of the world’s electricity by 2026, part of an overall megatrend of material and energy intensification, not reduction. In The Dark Cloud, French journalist Guillaume Pitron notes that in the 1960s, an analog telephone was built with 10 common elements, while modern cell phones require rare earths as part of a mix comprising more than 50. Powering the steep slope to the Singularity will require technologies that do not yet exist, and must be implemented at scale within a decade or so. Kurzweil is characteristically relaxed—or perhaps arrogantly overconfident—in his faith that collapsing ecosystems and resource wars will disappear into the rearview of the Singularity by midcentury.

Understanding Cloud VPS: How It Differs from Traditional VPS Hosting
As online presence has become important, determining which hosting service to choose has become one of the essential business decisions. There are two well-known options: Cloud VPS and Traditional VPS, and each has distinct characteristics and benefits. Understanding their differences can help you choose the hosting solution that has all the features you want for your website. Let us explore the distinction between Cloud VPS and Traditional VPS hosting.

VPS Hosting: The Building Block
Practically, VPS hosting is a reality of virtualization technology, and it includes the segmentation of a physical server into several virtual areas. Each VPS works as stand-alone units, providing users with distinct and reserved assets, greater governance, as well as enhanced security as compared to sharing resources with others (like in shared hosting). This type of unit is perfect for those who want more than shared hosting, but do not wish to have a dedicated server.
Traditional VPS Hosting: What to Expect
An underlying issue with Traditional VPS hosting is that a physical server hosts several distinct virtual servers which are partitions of the single physical server. Individual computational units, such as CPU and memory resource denominating units, are assigned to every partition (virtual server instance) separately.
Benefits of Traditional VPS:
Allocated Resources: Each Virtual Private Server has been allocated dedicated assets alone and hence given room for performance stability.
Steady Environment: All available resources for the servers or applications are set, hence high reliability in performance.
Increased Security: Geo-segmentation of virtual servers result in the captivity of data to determined borders hence more security.
Disadvantages of Traditional VPS:
Potential Growth is Lower: Moving to a new server is often required because scaling specially target resources at taking out the entire current server.
Singe Instance of Trouble: At the incident of some hardware fault on the server all VPS (virtual private servers) instances that were hosted there are affected.
Static Division of Resources: Adjustment on the availability of certain resources at any one time is difficult hence, may cause frustrations in the management of traffic surges.
Cloud VPS Hosting: The Adaptable Approach
Cloud VPS hosting employs a cloud based virtualization technology that allows connection of several servers over a network cloud. Such a structure cultivates flexibility, quick growth and more strength since resources are sourced from several servers rather than one.
Cloud VPS benefits:
Scalable with ease: Resources are completely adjustable and scaling does not involve any upgrades.
Reduced Downtime: The chances of a server going down are drastically reduced because the workload is handled by multiple servers.
Improved Performance Levels: Traffic across servers is balanced to achieve efficiency and a rush is experienced even when the level of activity is busy.
Pay Per Use: The per minute charge system means that costs only increase when the resources increase.
Cloud VPS disadvantages:
Unstable Prices: Servers that bill based on resources consumed means the expense for that month can be somewhat erratic.
Location Issues: This can be a contentious issue due to the fact that all data is kept distributed over many servers in some heavily regulated industries.
Network Dependency: Understandably, the performance of Cloud based VPS is determined by the Internet connection quality; slower networks tend to hamper the speed at which the resources are accessed.
4. Which VPS Option is Right for You?
Choose Traditional VPS if:
You are looking to operate in a more stable and consistent environment.
Your website experiences traffic that is steady and within reasonable limits.
You would like to pay a fixed monthly fee without any variations.
Choose Cloud VPS if:
You are looking for more flexibility and expansion options.
Your site receives fluctuating and irregular visits, or seasonal peaks.
It is essential for your organization to experience high availability and low downtime.
5. Final Thoughts
There are benefits as well as different uses associated with Cloud VPS and Traditional VPS. For example, Cloud VPS offers agility, growth potential, and dependability and is therefore suitable for businesses that are poised for expansion and need to cope with abrupt increases in demand for the products marketed online. On the other hand, Traditional VPS is a great and affordable option for people seeking a certain fixed resource and where variability is not a major factor.
Remember that it is crucial to choose the right type of VPS when starting a website. The difference in performance, online presence, and cost can be widely affected by the host one chooses, making it imperative to adapt the virtual private servers to the needs of the business.

U Michigan did a press release too, this one talks a little bit more about my specific contributions, I even got to give a quote!
U-M study: Using 'tweezers' to control active fluids reporting by Morgan Sherburne of U-M news
University of Michigan physicists have devised a way to manipulate active fluids, a type of fluid composed of individual units that can propel themselves independently, by taking advantage of topological defects in the fluids.
The researchers showed that they could use tweezers similar to optical tweezers—highly focused lasers that can be used to nudge around atoms and other microscopic and submicroscopic materials—to manipulate the fluids’ topological defects and control how these active fluids flow. The study, led by U-M physicist Suraj Shankar, is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
You can think of an active fluid like a flock of birds, says Shankar. In a murmuration, an enormous cloud of starlings, birds will twist and turn in unison, making shapes of the cloud. But while the murmuration looks like it’s moving as one organism, the movement is made of individual birds powered by their individual sets of wings.
Similarly, active fluids are composed of individual components like bacteria in water or atoms in a crystal, but each unit moves on its own if shone with light or given “food” via a chemical reaction, according to Shankar. Researchers have previously engineered bacteria so that when they shine light on the bacteria, some bacteria in the liquid swim faster and others swim slower.
“And you can change that pattern as you want. By changing the speed at which the bacteria swim locally, you can paint faces of famous people, or change it and make a landscape,” said Shankar, an assistant professor of physics at U-M.
“Given that these experimental platforms exist and we’re now able to manipulate these materials by controlling the speed by which things are moving around, we asked: Can we develop a framework in which we can control the local speeds of things that comprise active fluids so that we can control them in a systematic way?”
The research team also includes co-authors Cristina Marchetti and Mark Bowick of the University of California Santa Barbara and Luca Scharrer, who conducted much of the research as an undergraduate at UCSB.
The team focused on a popular active fluid called a nematic fluid, composed of liquid crystals—the same kind of liquid crystals that comprise smartphone, tablet and computer displays. These liquid crystals are fluids composed of long molecules that can line up and become ordered like matches in a matchbox or timber logs stacking up and flowing down a river, Shankar says. But when driven by chemical reactions these nematic fluids become active and have the ability to pump fluid, which allows them to move around without externally applied forces or pressure gradients.
Shankar and colleagues used this characteristic feature and applied principles of symmetry, geometry and topology from mathematics to develop design principles that will allow the researchers to control the trajectory of individual crystals within the nematic fluids.
Their methods rely on differences in how these rod-like objects line up within the liquid. They may be misaligned at some points, which causes the liquid crystals to bend around the point of misalignment, like a whirlpool in a river. This creates different patterns in the fluid, similar to the ridges of your fingerprints, Shankar says. In liquid crystals, there are points where the line of crystals will bend over and look like a comet, or form a symbol that looks like the Mercedes logo.
If you add energy to the system and make the fluid active, these patterns, called topological defects, come alive.
“These patterns start moving and they drive and stir the fluid, almost as if they were actual particles,” Shankar said. “Controlling these individual patterns that are associated with the defects seems like a simpler job than to control each microscopic component in a fluid.”
The project began when Scharrer developed simulations to model active fluid flow and track the locations of topological defects, attempting to test a hypothesis posed by Shankar and Marchetti. Showing his simulation results to the other researchers, Scharrer and the team found how these complex responses could be mathematically explained and converted into design principles for defect control.
In the study, Scharrer created ways to create, move and braid topological patterns using what they call active topological tweezers. These tweezers can transport or manipulate these defects along space-time trajectories as if they were particles, by controlling the structure and extent of the regions where chemical activity drives fluid pumping. The resulting motion of the active fluid around the whirlpools of the topological defects enables their never-ending movement.
“I think this work is a beautiful example of how curiosity-driven research, compared to problem- or profit-driven work, can lead us in completely unexpected technological directions,” said Scharrer, now a doctoral student at the University of Chicago.
“We started this project because we were interested in the fundamental physics of topological defects, and accidentally stumbled into a new way to control active biological and bio-inspired fluids. If we’d had that end goal in mind from the beginning, who knows if we would have found anything at all.”
The researchers also demonstrate how simple activity patterns can control large collections of swirling defects that continually drive turbulent mixing flows.
Shankar says while the field is new, and their method is proven using computational models at this point, some day people could use this concept in creating micro testing systems for diagnostic purposes or for creating tiny reaction chambers. Another potential application could be in the field of soft robotics or soft systems, in which computing capabilities could be distributed throughout soft, flexible materials.
“These are unusual kinds of fluids that have very exciting properties, and they pose very interesting questions in physics and engineering that we can hopefully encourage others to think about,” Shankar said. “Given this framework in this one system that we demonstrate, hopefully others can take similar ideas and apply it to their favorite model and favorite system, and hopefully make other discoveries that are equally exciting.”
(sorry for posting multiple stories about the same research but it's my first ever paper and I'm very proud of it so actually I'm not sorry and I will continue to post more links if other news outlets pick up the story)

How New NASA, India Earth Satellite NISAR Will See Earth
Set to launch within a few months, NISAR will use a technique called synthetic aperture radar to produce incredibly detailed maps of surface change on our planet.
When NASA and the Indian Space Research Organization’s (ISRO) new Earth satellite NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) launches in coming months, it will capture images of Earth’s surface so detailed they will show how much small plots of land and ice are moving, down to fractions of an inch. Imaging nearly all of Earth’s solid surfaces twice every 12 days, it will see the flex of Earth’s crust before and after natural disasters such as earthquakes; it will monitor the motion of glaciers and ice sheets; and it will track ecosystem changes, including forest growth and deforestation.
The mission’s extraordinary capabilities come from the technique noted in its name: synthetic aperture radar, or SAR. Pioneered by NASA for use in space, SAR combines multiple measurements, taken as a radar flies overhead, to sharpen the scene below. It works like conventional radar, which uses microwaves to detect distant surfaces and objects, but steps up the data processing to reveal properties and characteristics at high resolution.
To get such detail without SAR, radar satellites would need antennas too enormous to launch, much less operate. At 39 feet (12 meters) wide when deployed, NISAR’s radar antenna reflector is as wide as a city bus is long. Yet it would have to be 12 miles (19 kilometers) in diameter for the mission’s L-band instrument, using traditional radar techniques, to image pixels of Earth down to 30 feet (10 meters) across.
Synthetic aperture radar “allows us to refine things very accurately,” said Charles Elachi, who led NASA spaceborne SAR missions before serving as director of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California from 2001 to 2016. “The NISAR mission will open a whole new realm to learn about our planet as a dynamic system.”
How SAR Works
Elachi arrived at JPL in 1971 after graduating from Caltech, joining a group of engineers developing a radar to study Venus’ surface. Then, as now, radar’s allure was simple: It could collect measurements day and night and see through clouds. The team’s work led to the Magellan mission to Venus in 1989 and several NASA space shuttle radar missions.
An orbiting radar operates on the same principles as one tracking planes at an airport. The spaceborne antenna emits microwave pulses toward Earth. When the pulses hit something — a volcanic cone, for example — they scatter. The antenna receives those signals that echo back to the instrument, which measures their strength, change in frequency, how long they took to return, and if they bounced off of multiple surfaces, such as buildings.
This information can help detect the presence of an object or surface, its distance away, and its speed, but the resolution is too low to generate a clear picture. First conceived at Goodyear Aircraft Corp. in 1952, SAR addresses that issue.
“It’s a technique to create high-resolution images from a low-resolution system,” said Paul Rosen, NISAR’s project scientist at JPL.
As the radar travels, its antenna continuously transmits microwaves and receives echoes from the surface. Because the instrument is moving relative to Earth, there are slight changes in frequency in the return signals. Called the Doppler shift, it’s the same effect that causes a siren’s pitch to rise as a fire engine approaches then fall as it departs.
Computer processing of those signals is like a camera lens redirecting and focusing light to produce a sharp photograph. With SAR, the spacecraft’s path forms the “lens,” and the processing adjusts for the Doppler shifts, allowing the echoes to be aggregated into a single, focused image.
Using SAR
One type of SAR-based visualization is an interferogram, a composite of two images taken at separate times that reveals the differences by measuring the change in the delay of echoes. Though they may look like modern art to the untrained eye, the multicolor concentric bands of interferograms show how far land surfaces have moved: The closer the bands, the greater the motion. Seismologists use these visualizations to measure land deformation from earthquakes.
Another type of SAR analysis, called polarimetry, measures the vertical or horizontal orientation of return waves relative to that of transmitted signals. Waves bouncing off linear structures like buildings tend to return in the same orientation, while those bouncing off irregular features, like tree canopies, return in another orientation. By mapping the differences and the strength of the return signals, researchers can identify an area’s land cover, which is useful for studying deforestation and flooding.
Such analyses are examples of ways NISAR will help researchers better understand processes that affect billions of lives.
“This mission packs in a wide range of science toward a common goal of studying our changing planet and the impacts of natural hazards,” said Deepak Putrevu, co-lead of the ISRO science team at the Space Applications Centre in Ahmedabad, India.

The way it works
The mind is God. God's Word is God's/Mind's acknowledgment of what IS. When you declare something as BEING/REALITY. When you declare something is being reality, it INSTANTLY is. Objectivity immediately begins to arrange itself to reflect the Mind's conception of reality/What IS.
This means that being reality, Mind/God needs to see its CONCEPTION as THE ONLY reality. The problem is that GOD/Mind(YOU) sees the OUTCOME of its conception as reality, rather than its CAUSE, which is ITSELF.
i.e. "I'm Rich!" *Looks at negative bank account* "I guess I'm not."
This is literally turning the light on, and then turning it back off. In this mechanism, the light itself, in the 3D/realm of EFFECT, doesn't turn on INSTANTLY, it's as if the light has to LOAD until it is completely on. In the realm of CAUSE, It is Instantly On, but in the realm of EFFECT/Manifest, it needs to be FORMED according to the CAUSAL image/conception in GOD/MIND.
If you have your PC backed up to a cloud, your PC is the Mind, and the cloud is the 3d/Manifest realm. Once you change the File on the PC, the File change is instant, but the change has to UPLOAD first to the cloud so that change can occur. But Imagine if you looked at the CLOUD as the cause instead of your PC. You would NOT be able to make ANY changes to your PC if the CLOUD was the cause. The CLOUD is the result. MIND/GOD (The PC) is the CAUSE. You can't turn off the Computer DURING the upload and expect anything to change/work.
We look at the EFFECT as the CAUSE, which creates the reinforcing Feedback and causes the EFFECT to be magnified SEVERAL fold. It's the same thing that happens when you bring two microphones together. Feedback that gets louder and louder, until incoherence.
In mind, declare something as true. The outer WILL rearrange to reflect it. It must be SUSTAINED. Neville said this over and over.
YOU MUST MAINTAIN IT UNTIL IT REFLECTS OBJECTIVELY/MANIFESTS THIS IS HOW THE LAW WORKS.
John 7:24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
Appearance is a characteristic of the 3D/Realm of Manifestation.
Judge not by appearance.
JUDGE NOT BY APPEARANCE
JUDGE. NOT. BY. APPEARANCE.
JUDGE NOT BY APPEARANCE
