Can you tell us more lighthouse strories? :)
Hmm. I made a few other lighthouse stories but I think a lot of them are harder to track down these days? I should probably just make a pinned post.
Stories: The lighthouse and the watch house were right next door to each other the same way you might put a shed out back if your shed was a three-story glowing tower that screamed at a decibel level akin to violence at predictable intervals. There was a white painted line, or maybe it was yellow? On the rocks in a circumference, you were never to cross because beyond that line the noise could permanently deafen you.
The house we stayed in had a rich history of tear-downs and rebuilds. The Atlantic ocean is not fond of houses and does its very best to destroy them with ice, tides, and occasionally very large rocks. It was two stories, downstairs there was a kitchen, a living room, and a gear-storage room where we had a bunch of fancy-schmancy equipment set up and either running, or ready to take out and run. Upstairs were the sleeping quarters but it was weird. At one point the house had belonged to a family with normal bedrooms, then some new owners came in and boarded up the upstairs into two gendered halves so that boys and girls couldn't touch each other in ungodly ways. Then some door-holes were cut in those shodily put up barriers so the upstairs kind of had a spirit-halloween popup store vibe with the construction.
No heat, no electricity or running water. Water was usually packed in on ships and the bathroom was converted to a compost system that was actually fairly well done. Fire stove and gas appliances that we shipped gas in with kept the downstairs super cozy so often we just slept there instead even though it was cramped and sometimes we wanted to kill each other. One of my teammates had the nastiest unwashed white girl dreads Id ever seen because she didn't take advantage of any of the camp hair-hygene options available and kept trying to convince us to dredge our hair with seawater and tie it in knots. Blessedly I had lost my sense of stank by a few days into expedition mode.
Once I lost my hat in the wind and it blew into the circle zone of bodily harm near the lighthouse and I timed my sprint so I could run in, get my hat and get out before it could go off again in what was a spectacularly stupid move, exactly the half brained shit you would expect from an 18 year old with no thoughts in her head.
The moose washed up but so did a leatherback turtle which took a lot longer than the moose to clean and prep. We never killed animals but we often recorded the contents of dead ones and used/sold/donated bones and things to museams, researchers and various societies. We all hated the turtle, while the moose brought us together in a task of madness and hubris, no one wanted to touch the turtle and it was the most cursed task on the island for some time.
Various sea birds (assholes) were the main species living on the island. You had to walk with one hand raised above your head in a fist at nearly all times when they were nesting because the assholes were stupid and would attack the highest part of your body thinking it was your head. You would wear a glove or use an umbrella if you knew you would have to be out there for more than a few minutes.
All of the food was vegan and I hated it. We had a joke that if you threw the vegan scrambled eggs on the ground they would bounce higher than the hight you threw them from. They didn't bounce that high but they did bounce suspiciously high.
The other lighthouse I stayed at had a fancy helipad we could all sit out on made of wood. On off days we would sun ourselves. For some reason despite only a 3 hour difference between the islands great duck island was green and sometimes nice while great rock island was grey and bitterly cold.
Thgis lighthouse had electricity but still no plumbing. It was a much larger research station with at least one permanent resident but I didn't stay long. they studied burrowing owls, horribly invasive rabbits, ruins from early new england settlers and a now feral cow population the settlers just left for some reason.
Its bizarre to be warned about the dangerous cows that lurk in the woods nearby and how they can appear and disappear into the trees faster than you will realize it. It is even more bizarre to be walking in the woods planting your little pink flags to mark burrows when out of nowhere there is a huge godamn cow in front of you that is blessedly more afraid of you than you are of it as it slowly backs back into the trees and disappears.
Loved the research lighthouse life and the cool stories I got to be a part of. Unfortunately decided that it was not what I wanted to dedicate my life to for various reasons tumblr wouldn't find interesting.

 ‘’Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you. I live next door and noticed you were moving in, I wanted to know if you needed any help,’’ the guy chuckled a bit, eyeing your tense form. You laughed in relief, hand on your chest in an attempt to calm your racing heart.
 ‘’I’m sorry, I wasn’t paying attention. Thank you for the kind offer, I’m Y/n, Y/n y/l/n,’’ you offered a welcoming smile, stretching out your hand to properly shake his hand. He returned the favor and the moment his massive hand took hold of yours’ it felt like icicles had been thrusted into your back.
 ‘’I’m Nate Jacobs, it’s nice to meet you y/n,’’ he smiled back. What you assumed he meant to be a reassuring smile instead filled your insides with butterflies and sent your nerves into a frenzy. He was attractive, but you could vaguely hear the alarm bells going off inside your head.
 ‘’Well thank you very much Nate, but I think I brought everything inside already,’’ you referred to the numerous boxes and wrapped up furniture that was currently littering your new living room, spilling into the kitchen.
 ‘’No problem, just let me know if you need help with anything,’’ that crooked smile was a permanent feature on his face, you quickly discovered. You nodded your thanks, moving to close the door when the power suddenly went out.
 ‘’Great, just my luck,’’ you groaned, moving to find a flashlight somewhere.
 ‘’If you want I can check your electric panel?’’ Nate’s deep voice sent shivers up your spine.
 ‘’Are you sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble? I can call an electrician in the morning,’’ you offered, finding out that said flashlight that to your frustration was full of dead batteries. Candles it was.
 ‘’It’s no problem at all,’’ you could hear the amusement in his voice as he brushed past you to check the panel. The heat from his body filled you with a sense of longing, something primal. For a moment, you wondered what it would be like to moan out his name.
 ‘’It should be in the backyard, by the picnic table,’’ you called out, shrugging off the less-than-appropriate thoughts running wild in your imagination.
 You had successfully located a handful of candles along with a lighter. The cozy glow of the flames illuminated your house to the point you could now see where you were going without bumping into anything. Noticing that your phone battery was running low, you set it down on the counter and prayed nothing more would happen tonight. You had to be up early for the first day of school tomorrow and you didn’t aspire to look like an extra from the Walking Dead due to dark circles and lack of sleep. As you nervously tapped your foot while awaiting Nate’s return, you squealed in delight as the lights came back on. You turned your attention the French doors that led to the backyard, the smile quickly fading from your face when you saw Nate’s drenched form. You bit your lip when his blue hoodie clung to his toned form, the bulges that were his abs teasing you.
 ‘’Got a towel I can borrow?’’ Nate smirked, his hair falling into his eyes as he shook himself off.
 Your mouth still hung open as you quickly dug through a random box, successfully finding a fluffy cotton towel.
 ‘’What happened?’’ you wondered, eyes straining to remain on his face and not his muscular body.
 ‘’I turned the power back on, I must’ve accidentally reset your sprinkler system too and, well you can figure out the rest,’’ he scoffed, removing his drenched hoodie.

  ‘’See something you like?’’ Nate’s voice was low as he leaned down closer to you. You could feel his breath hitting the side of your face and shoulder. Your eyes instantly fell to the floor, your cheeks set aflame with embarrassment.
 ‘’Don’t look away, doll,’’ he whispered, hand gently cupping your neck to get you to meet his gaze.
 ‘’I don’t think I’m your type,’’ your voice was soft. Low, but vulnerable,  and Nate took notice.
 ‘’Because you’re a few years older? Come on y/n, we’re both more mature than that,’’ he groaned, taking one step closer to you, than another and another. Your back quickly met the wall, gasping at the rough contact.
 ‘’This isn’t right,’’ you whispered, trembling as Nate’s thumb stroked your bottom lip.
 ‘’What are you? Twenty-four?’’ Nate drew back, his thumb still pressed against your bottom lip as you nodded your head.
 ‘’So what’s a couple of years?’’ his husky voice groaned into your ear as he bent down, pressing open mouth kisses on your exposed shoulder, up the base of your neck.
 ‘’N-Nate,’’ you whimpered, clenching your fists until your knuckles turned white.

not all of it, but stuff i find particularly useful/want to remember. RIP this blog. the gimmick wears off after a while but it was genuinely useful information.
BUDGETING
suggested monthly budget for groceries for a two-person household is $553. estimated weekly budget is around $100. 
find a pad of paper and a pen and keep it with you for the next 24 hours. Write down every single fucking thing you use or even touch in your house. Tomorrow I want you to look at that list and figure out the cost of everything.
keep track of how much you spend on gas monthly.
add in your estimated utilities. You can fucking google that on your own, because it’s going to be different for wherever you want to live. Absolutely do this if you plan on moving to a different town or state.
divide your total monthly income by three. Hey, look at that, it’s my good friend Math again. Funny how he keeps showing up. Make sure the number of your expenses is less than the other 2/3rds, if it is, you can continue.
FINDING APARTMENTS

Focus on your top 10. Then your top 5. Then your top 3. Don’t go any farther than that (and don’t get rid of the research for the other 7 just yet). Create crazy complicated rating systems. Make an excel sheet or start putting stuff on your wall and connecting them with strings. Go full-on serial killer. Dedicate yourself.
You should also make note of how big the room is so you know if you can even fit what little you own. The same goes for the hallways or stairs or whatever exists outside the apartment on the way from your car. Could you get your mattress through all that shit?
PACKING
Figure out what you want to donate and what you want to put in the trash before you start packing.
Do not go grocery shopping right before moving... Just wait til you’re in the new place to make that trip.
Change your address. Like a week before you move. While you’re doing this, make a list of everywhere you’ve entered your address and need to change. Keep that list. Your future self will thank you someday.
Start in one room and pack all that before moving to a different part of the house. This is a good way to keep all your stuff together and it’s also a good way to find out that you own five decks of cards or one too many furbys.
Put everything into piles: keep, donate, and ditch.
Label the boxes with what room they belong to so you know exactly where it needs to go. Some people like to also mark this with a color coded sticker. 
Also label what’s in the boxes. For example: Kitchen - silverware; cooking utensils; hot pads; magnet collection. You don’t need to label every item individually, but have some idea of what’s in there. Label it on more than one side. Don’t label it on the top, because you’ll just end up stacking boxes on top of each other.
Distribute the weight of your stuff. Mix heavy books with stuffed animals.
Alternately, pack by weight. Heavy stuff goes in small boxes, light stuff goes in big boxes. Basically what I’m saying is don’t pack a massive box with too much weight that it’s too heavy to carry or will break the box.
Use all of your suitcases and bags for packing!
For toiletries - take off the top, place plastic wrap over the opening, replace the top. This way you don’t end up with lotion all over your towels or something.
Know what you’ll need immediately and make sure those boxes are the last thing on the truck, first thing unloaded at the new place. Maybe keep those things in a clear container so you can see exactly what’s in there. Hint: three of the things you’ll need immediately are your toolbox, cleaning supplies, and toilet paper.
note to self: get toolbox and first aid kit.
Take pictures of the new apartment. Before anything goes in it. This way if there are any scratches on the wall or stains on the carpet, the new landlord can’t say it happened during the move.

Will it be ready when you need it? It’s gonna totally suck if you find the right place and find out it’s not available when you’re ready to move
Are there appliances? Are they included? Do they even work? 
How old is the apartment? This is important to ask because it will tell you how much trouble you’re going to have. Like, if it’s Civil War era, you might have issues with foundation cracks or old wiring or ghosts of soldiers waking you up in the middle of the night.
Have there been any issues with insects, rodents, mold, or mildew? You have to ask this. No good self-respecting property manager would tell you this of their own free will.
What kind of security is there? Did you have to go through a gate when you came in? Do you need a key to get into your building before you get into your door? Or does your door face out cheap motel style? Are there electronic pass codes? Is there any kind of security force on site?
If you ever find someone willing to hang out with you, is there a special place they need to park? Do you need to let the office know if they plan on staying the night?
Where do you park? Is parking included? Is in indoor or outdoor?
Do you need a city sticker to park on the street? [Note: I asked this when I moved to Missouri and everyone thought I was batshit crazy. This is normal in places like Chicago, not so normal elsewhere. See if you can determine that before you ask a crazy question.]
Can you paint the walls? Can you put holes in the walls? Can you do whatever it is you do to walls, so long as they look the same when you move out?
What exactly is the maintenance policy, beyond walls? What is covered, what’s not? And who do you contact when there’s an issue? Is there a maintenance person on staff, or do they call out to someone in the area? Do they have a 24-hour emergency maintenance line
Is there heat and air conditioning? What kind? If it’s a window unit, will it be included in the apartment? Are the costs of heating and cooling included
Do you have control over the temperature or is it a building thing?Are any utilities included?
Who are the cable and internet providers in the area? What are their rates? Does the apartment complex have an exclusive contract with one of the companies?
What kind of people live here? Do they have children? Are they all ancient? Do they have, as I suspect my last neighbors did, a bowling alley in their apartment?
Just how much are you going to hear from your neighbors? On a scale of Ernest Hemingway to Les Mis, how thick are the walls?
When is rent due and how do they want it? Are checks required? Can you pay with a credit card? Do they want it all in cash? Also, how is rent submitted? Can you pay electronically or do you drop it in a mailbox?
Do you need renter’s insurance? About how much does it cost? Are there any weird things that need to be included that might not be everywhere? Like, are earthquakes an issue?
What is the process for applying to the apartment, should you choose to rent it? Are there credit checks?
What’s the pet policy? Is there pet rent?
Are there quiet hours or other weird rules about volume or people or places or things?
Are there public areas like pools or parks or gyms? What are the rules regarding those?
If you have a roommate, will both of your names be on the lease, or will one person be designated as the responsible party (you better pray it isn’t you)?
What about trash? Is there pick up or dumpsters? Recycling?
Is there a storage unit included? Where is it? What kind of security does it have?
What happens with deliveries? Do they all go through the front office or are they left on your doorstep? Are you able to pick stuff up at any time? Do you need certain ID for it?
Is there a dishwasher? Is it louder than the bowling alley next door?
If you’re in an area that gets snow, do they plow or shovel? Will they totally bury your car if you don’t move it when the plow comes by?Is there public transportation anywhere?

Where are the outlets? Take note of prongs.
Are there permanent light sources or do you need to go to Ikea?
How big are the rooms? What shape are they? Are you going to be able to fit all your shit in here? [Note: you should already have a floor plan online, but ask for a paper copy if they have one.]

A/N: Hey everyone! I’m very excited to begin this year’s @mallekweek event! 
This first piece will be a canon divergent AU set years after Mallek is shipped off planet, now part of a wide scale rebellion fighting the Empire in a civil war across the galaxy. The prompt for this day focuses on "Robots" I hope you enjoy reading this piece.

A figure is crawling through a long stretching vent, he was dressed in completely black attire, covering everything but his eyes, a series of gadgets and weapons attached on his uniform, armed to teeth with various items. All of this made for an uncomfortable fit but you manage to make it through, this was the only way to infiltrate the facility undetected by the drones or the guards. The smell was a mix of dusty, dampness, rodent shit, and metal, so you know the typical smells you find in a ventilation system.
It was just one of the many things you were used to as part of the job he thinks to himself, he turns into another, it begins to expand, giving him more room so it wasn’t too tight. He then pulls out a small device, pressing the button as a holographic project pops out the screen. Here was a full layout of the facility, along with details of all the levels. The indicator that represented him was a flashing red blip, and he was en route to a green blip that was approximately another level ahead of him. It was left and then straight ahead. He was so close that he could almost taste it. Placing the device back into one of the pockets.
He was an assassin, a hired killer who took high-paying contracts and was one of the best in the business, but he was always interested in the challenge of the kill and how much it was worth to the client. Right now, his target was an Alternian captain in a rebel cell, he had been hired by a high-ranking official within the Alternian empire. His target was one of many rebels against their empire, causing a small civil conflict between the trolls. It didn’t concern him after all, he wasn’t a troll, and wars and conflict across the galaxy just meant more clients for him. In fact, he had been previously hired by the alternian rebels to kill an empire spy and retrieve all the intel they gathered on them.
His allegiance was to the highest bidder…
And this job in particular was worth 50,000 credits. Easy money.
The assassin finally makes his way to his destination. He is directly above the chambers of this captain, he carefully grabs a small metallic tube and presses it against the grate underneath him, a small focused beam of heat shoots from the tip and he uses it to cut the grate open, pushing across and gracefully landing into the hallway, standing before a large automatic door with a security system beside it, a combination of a code sequencer, hand recognition, and retinal scan. His eyes shift around the hall, before taking out his device, pressing a few buttons on before he attaches it to the security panel. There is a jolt of electricity and then a beeping noise as his tool begins to hack the security panel, bypassing the checks.
Reaching for his blaster, fingers itching to wrap around the handle, and squeeze the trigger and fire. He had already mapped out his escape route, so he had to enter the room, and shoot. A green indicator appears on his device and slowly the doors open, he unholsters his weapon. Rushing inside he wastes no time, his gun charges up energy and discharges several rounds of particle beams. He got a little trigger happy, but his shots had pierced through the large chair that was turned back to him, followed by the sound of someone falling over with a heavy thud. Perfect shot.
It wouldn’t be long before his presence would become known, but he needed confirmation for his target. He creeps over to the desk, maneuvering around to the other side, expecting to see a bloody corpse with five holes but to his confusion laying there on the ground was a robot?!
“What the…” He didn’t understand, staring at the destroyed robot, leaking a dark oil substance, sparks flying from the damage he impacted on it. “What is this?” He says aloud, looking around the room, double checking the room, but there was no one else inside.
‘Sorry. Not the person you were expecting in that seat I take it?’
A voice booms on an intercom that catches the assassin's attention. Holding his weapon up, but he was all alone in the room. Just then the doors to the room seal shut by themselves, the sound of the locking mechanism. A secondary system? He rushes to the door, taking out his device to hack open the door again. Sticking on the panel again as the process begins.
‘Oh, quite the cute gadget you got there. No wonder you were able to breach the security and get undetected…’
Suddenly his handheld system begins to short, then a logo appears on the screen a blue zigzag that ends with an arrow pointing up. He attempts to remove his gadget off the panel but is electrocuted, pulling his hand back in pain. He watches as his tool for helping him escape short circuits and fries, a tiny explosion as he shields his face, the device now scorched beyond recognition.
‘Sorry about that. Did I break your toy?’ ‘Here, let me replace it with some of mine...’
A loud buzzer noise fills the room, and then the sound of pressurized air. A set of four panels open up on the wall release a group of mechanized drones, that looked like the standard Empire drones however these were painted with a blue metallic chrome, the previous logo he saw on his gadget was engraved into these ones, and their LED eyes were glowing green, they surround him and before he can even fight back, each one draws a long metal bow staff, the tips charged with electricity. He is struck by one of the rods, and then another, each one sending several volts through his body, trembling he collapses to the floor. They continue to strike him, the blows are hard and each one delivers a painful shock that fills a dozen stings all over his body.
‘That’s enough. Stop.’
The voice commands and the drones respond, one of the machines makes a techno-based noise as if some kind of unique language as it looks up in the corner of the room, where a camera is watching everything. They stop striking the now unconscious assassin. They await further instructions from the voice, the alien’s body twitches a few times as a sign that he was still alive but he was unable to move.
Elsewhere in a completely different location, in another facility, in a small dark control room, the only source of light coming from the large holographic screen, and neon buttons, a figure was still alone in the room. On the screen was the scene that just transpired. He stands up from his leather seat and reaches for a button in front of him, holding down with his finger.
“Now take him to the holding cells.” He orders his machines as one makes a saluting gesture to the camera lenses.
He watches as one of them picks the alien up and throws him over its shoulder and they march out of the room. His trap had worked, and the intel that the rebels received was reliable. The Empire was targeting rebel cell leaders, and Mallek was on their hit list, considering that was responsible for the theft of hundreds of drones that he and his squad personally reprogrammed and shipped to help their other allies, or resend back within the Empire’s factories and like a virus infect the stock. It was certainly becoming a nuisance for the Empire, so much so they sent assassins and bounty hunters after the rebel. But to say he wasn’t prepared would be an insult, setting that trap for the assassin, and always on the move, using misinformation as his current location was one of his many safehouses located in this part of the galaxy. Mallek presses another button on his panel, bringing up a new screen as another troll appears on his screen.
“Yes sir?” The troll addresses Mallek as he’s the commanding officer.
“We have a guest in the western facility, my personal drones have escorted him to the holding cells. Make sure he’s taken care of.” He instructs him, as he would have questions for the assassin later.
“Of course sir, right away.” He bows his head before Mallek makes a gesture before cutting off communications.

Setting up his laptop on a clean bench, he gets to work, pressing the button on his playlist as his favorite tracks start playing, he begins typing entering his codes, and then uploading to the new stolen shipment of drones that arrived, freshly painted with his color and his logo printed on them.
A notification noise catches his ear, followed by a small vibrating sensation in his left pocket. Another sigh. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small red communication device. It’s a message from an unknown contact, he rolls his eyes knowing full well who this was, a light chuckle as he presses a button and puts the device on a loudspeaker.
“Yo.” He answers as he continues to type away on his laptop.
“Hey, stranger… So how’d my intel turned out? Did someone come to kill you today?”
“Oh yeah, your information was spot on, for once…” His tone is sarcastic as he hears a burst of muffled laughter on the other end of the device.
“Hey! I’ll have you know that information is highly valuable and always reliable! I’m your eyes and ears in this area of the universe…” The other voice says which makes Mallek snort and laugh.
“Yeah, I’m so sure...Don’t worry, I’m working on your custom job right now and it’ll be shipped out soon.” He adds as this particular job was a favor to his old friend who had provided the intel regarding this assassin.
“You’re a lifesaver Adalov!” He yells to Mallek, very grateful to him for working so late on this.
“Anything else you need from me, just gimme a message directly or one of my boys.” He adds as Mallek rolls his eyes, knowing full well that the other didn’t do anything without something in return.

It had been a few years into the civil war. The small-scale rebellion that seemed inconsequential had grown into multiple cells throughout the galaxies which then unified into a union against the Empire. It consisted of trolls who felt the injustice inflicted on both their people and other races at the hands of the Empire, banding together to cause distributions, stop their invasion across the universe and end this war.
Mallek’s entire life had been thrown upside the moment he was shipped off-world, if he had been told back when he was a teen that he would one of the many captains of the multiple cells fighting against the oppressive empress and the tyrannical royal family, he would tell that person “yeah right.”
But here he was, years later an adult fighting to ensure his comrades and friends would survive, fighting so his world could begin a new era so that no one else would have to suffer, there would be no more bloodshed, no more pain. And once this was all over he could finally stop being a warrior, a commander, he could put the conflict behind him and just have the life had envisioned. The life he wanted to have.
