but to be honest? the whole goddamn infrastructure in most DAWs is super melodic centric, and most plugins expect you to just Know how to use them. so

(1) try doing something completely nonmelodic. record an hour of your life, import it, chop it up and make some sort of soundscape/composition. just fuck around. a lot of noises you wouldn't otherwise find interesting can find really cool spots in your sound

(2) no shame, i think, in using presets. nothing wrong with pulling off-the-shelf sounds. granted some music theory will help you with putting down notes but you can always import midis/transcribe extant melodies and mess around with those

anyway bit soapboxy but... don't get discouraged! music is supposed to be fun, i'm sure. best of luck
