A favorite part of my work as a birth doula is getting to know my clients during our prenatal meetings. We linger over cups of tea as we chat. I get to know their pets. And I help them craft a birth plan. Whether it's a few bullets scribbled on a note card or a five paged type-written document, the PROCESS of creating the birth plan is so helpful. Also, then they have a clear outline and understanding of what they do want and what they don't want during their labor and birth. Most people know that, as your birth doula, I will be there to support you when you're in labor.

But, I actually think a huge part of the value of hiring a birth doula is what you get BEFORE you go into labor.

I offer as much or as little prenatal appointments that you desire.

This is when we can chat about your desires and hesitations AND go over anything you may have questions about in terms of procedures, medications and interventions. This gives us plenty of time to discuss and then you can do some followup reading and research on your own. It's SO much easier to do all that beforehand than while you are deep in the midst of labor!

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has this to say about birth doula support:

"Published data indicate that one of the most effective tools to improve labor and delivery outcomes is the continuous presence of support personnel, such as a doula. Given that there are no associated measurable harms, this resource is probably underutilized."

As your birth doula, I help with this in two ways. In our prenatal visits, I love teaching clients ways to calm their mind during labor so that their body can take over. I love having my prenatal meetings with clients at @honeysbakerycafe

The scones are delicious and the cozy corners are perfect for meeting with couples and getting to know them.
