I have something embarrassing to admit.

Earlier I found a post you reblogged about that shitty Dick Tracy cartoon and I will confess that I was hyperfixating on that idiotic thing for a while because I accidentally found it on TVTropes and it would not leave me alone. I want to study that shit like bacteria in a Petri dish

Seriously. though: what's there to be embarrassed about? I've been obsessed with it since bringing that VHS tape home circa, oh, 1997 or so. That other post was the first time I'd ever see anyone else alive admit knowing the show existed. It's a deeply strange time capsule of a weird period for animation. Jiu Jitsu is both pretty progressive for an era still in arms-reach of racial-charged anti-Japanese wartime propaganda... and is, equally, grotesquely racist in its own right. It's a show about Dick Tracy—the man married to a Moon Princess from the Moon—that said 'that's not really the kind of guy for a children's show, let's devote most of our focus to a bumbling Irish stereotype whose defining trait is being fat.' The Dick Tracy cartoon made choices. Inexplicable, baffling choices. An extraordinary curate's egg of a TV programme, more people should be obsessed with it. Even by the fantastic standards of children's cartoons, there is something so odd about UPA's The Dick Tracy Show. Up there with Clutch Cargo in terms of strangeness. No need for embarrassment, friend. Fixate away. It's what cartoon-show Dick would want. Probably. There's no way to disprove otherwise given how little he appears on the show.
