Hi! I was looking through your blog and i gotta say, it's wonderful to read through and learn all this history! I was wondering if you knew anything about childrens fashion? I know in most history, kids just wore mini versions of adults clothing, but i was curious nonetheless!
I think generally children did just wear mini versions of adults' clothing, but had distinct hairstyles and accessories. I can only speak for the Qing as most of the children's clothing I've seen is from the Qing. 19th century artworks also frequently depicted children running around in nothing but a 肚兜 dudou, something often mistaken for Qing Dynasty women's underwear but was in fact more of a pocket or extra layer of warmth. It's possible that dudou was worn by younger children, whereas when they reached a certain age they would be decked in full grown up's garb.
Children often had parts of their head shaved and the remaining hair made into buns and braids, as opposed to whatever hairstyle was fashionable for adults.

As to unique children's accessories, an example is the tiger hat @fouryearsofshades posted about.

Plan children's clothes with thought. When buying material buy all notions and trimmings so that you can match and contrast with the best results. Put as much thought into the fashion rightness of a child's dress as you would into one for yourself.
This is from Mary Brooks Picken’s Singer Sewing Book from 1953, an era when a large generation who made up the Baby Boom were growing up. It is true that kids can suffer mightily if they feel they look different from their peers, so I was struck by Picken’s urging women to make sure children’s clothing met “fashion rightness.” It also reminded me of the sewing kits for children’s clothing at https://farmhousefabrics.com that put together a pattern, fabric, trims etc, so that you don’t have to guess if the color on your screen will match what you need.
The book owes much to Picken’s earlier sewing books for women’s garments alone, and some of the images are the same as from books from the 1940s, but this edition has section on children’s clothing and sewing for the home which makes sense as domestic life loomed in the 1950s.

Hi, I recently found this photograph at a thrift store and was wondering if based on the fashion/type of camera or photography you would be able to tell me a bit more about it? Not sure if it’s late 19th century or 20th century, it’s a bit of a long shot but I couldn’t find any information on the back of the picture or inside the frame. If you know anything that would be really wonderful!
I’m not sure exactly why this photo stuck out to me in particular but I just like it for no reason except that I think it’s really cool :) I’m sad there were no names on the back or at least a date.

Hello! This is a little outside my wheelhouse, but if I had to hazard a guess I would say Edwardian/early 20th century. An article on the website of the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising Museum dates sailor suits for both boys and girls to the mid-19th century, so there is a possibility that it's even older!
The big bow on the head screams early 20th century to me, and I looked around for vintage photos to confirm that I'm not just channelling the art of Edward Gorey.

Schoolgirls in 1902! (source)
As far as the type of camera, it probably used photographic roll film, which was invented in the 1880s. It doesn't look like a daguerreotype or ambrotype. I agree that it's an interesting photo and conversation piece! I like the girls' sombre expressions and jaunty nautical look.
Any thoughts, phone friends?
