So with Joann going under and as a Fashion/Costume Designer and a cosplayer I need a place to get fabric and notions, and I know many others feel lost as well
So I made a short simple list of online fabric stores as well as notions .
Please share with anyone you would like. If you have recommendations of things to add please let me know.
There's only a few right now of ones I know and have used
I may add a few niche ones like Silk Baron but I am mainly adding ones with many options and maybe add a niche section later
More places with trims would be nice, or even patterns, historical, cosplay, or everyday.

Gobtober 6: Tailor
The lady that makes all those cute clothes everyone wears! To get a perfect fit, she likes to go hands-on with the measuring. There's little wonder why she's the favorite of all the cloth-wearing adventurers!

Thomas Jennings was a free man born in 1791 in New York City. He was 30 years old when he was granted a patent for a dry cleaning process. In his early 20s Thomas Jennings became a tailor, and later opened a dry cleaning business in the city. As a tailor. Jennings' skills were so admired that people near and far came to him to alter or custom tailor items of clothing for them. Eventually, Jennings reputation grew such that he was able to open his own store on Church street which grew into one of the largest clothing stores in New York City. While running his business Jennings developed dry-scouring. He had many customers complain of their clothes being ruined by stains and so he began experimenting with cleaners and mixtures that would remove the stains without harming the material. He earned a large amount of money as a tailor and even more with his dry scouring invention and most of the money he earned went to his abolitionist activities. In 1831, Thomas Jennings became assistant secretary for the First Annual Convention of the People of Color in Philadelphia, PA. Thomas L. Jennings Dry Scouring technique created modern day dry cleaning. Jennings was fortunate that he was a free man at the time of his invention. Besides all the other indignities and cruelties slaves had to face, they were also ineligible to hold a patent. Under the US patent laws of 1793 a person must sign an oath or declaration stating that they were a citizen of the USA. While there were, apparently, provisions through which a slave could enjoy patent protection, the ability of a slave to seek out, receive and defend a patent was unlikely. Later, in 1858, the patent office changed the laws, stating that since slaves were not citizens, they could not hold a patent. Furthermore, the court said that the slave owner, not being the true inventor could not apply for a patent either. Thomas Jennings died in New York City in 1856.

"Oh yes, Lady Terlas, executing a couple "Matoran plebeians" will CERTAINLY teach them their place and SURELY not lead to Toa at your doorstep. On a COMPLETELY unrelated note, would you be interested to see how you look in stripes?" "Sweet Mata Nui I miss Lord Atlan or Lady Sokira coming around the shop…"
There was talk on the Red Star Games Discord yesterday about what Bionicle species different people there would be. It was generally agreed that if not a Matoran, I'd be an Ihidauri (Pridak's species), on account of how fashion-focused I tend to make my MOCs.
So here he is, Arriba-dauri, a tailor that is rather done with his rich, egomaniacal clients.
Basically he's male Chiori.

“The tailor’s hound” part 6/6
A short story after the events of Baldurs Gate about Athios and Astarion, set in an AU where they both decided to step away from “what they do best” (mostly, at least) to pursue the second thing they do gracefully. Athios is a florist and deals in pigments, perfumes, and rare botanical ingredients made from his own buds. Astarion has his own small tailoring shop, which is in high demand and mysteriously only open at night.
I just want to add that every piece of clothing Athios wears is touched by Astarion's hands first, I can just imagine him being angry as hell seeing the destroyed hems of this robe and grumbling about all the other robes and suits he made for him. What he can't understand (or maybe he does) is that on one hand, Athios doesn't want to mess up the things he made for him, they're like treasures to him. And on the other, we all have a favorite "work" outfit. Let the man go and come back with his mysterious black rags. (They used to be perfectly neat, let me tell you, but Ath loves them to that extent.)

stop saying the clothes you made are handmade.
i will not shut up about how harmful it is to use these tiny "handmade" tags when youre a hobby tailor or a small buisness. advertising with how an item is handmade (but also just gifting people something and it has a handmade tag or button or whatever) is incredibly harmful. every piece of clothing is handmade. there might be a few exceptions but the absolute vast majority was made by hand. your primark, shein, temu and h&m clothes are handmade. these buisinesses dont want you to know that, they dont want you to see that a person made your t shirt. to think about the horrible conditions they made it in and how they are paid wages that dont allow them to live.
by putting a handmade tag on your handmade dress you are widening that gap between you, and the factory workers. you are dehumanising and devalueing them and their work.
we need everyone to understand how exactly clothing is made and who makes it. we need to understand that we are profiting off of someone elses unpaid labor. if everyone were to understand how every piece of clothing is handmade, you wouldnt need your shitty tags.
making your own clothes should teach you how much labor needs to be put into a simple pair of underwear. use that knowledge to advocate for your fellow sewists.
you can make a small lino or screen print to tag your clothes or order custom tags online! you can do that.
sewing and selling your work is great. and not underpricing it is important. so if you want to put a cute little tag on there, here are some ideas:
- made by y/n
- logo
- handmade like every piece of clothing
and for everyone who isnt a sewist/knitter/crocheter or whatever. look at each and every clothing/textile item you own or are about to buy and see how someone made it.
