Week 2:
This class we were instructed to used planar materials to create a piece. We also were not allowed to use fasteners which made this more challenging.
I decided to use the cardboard material as I was interested in cutting the cardboard only partially to create shapes and bends to make an interesting piece.
I began by cutting the cardboard in a way which would create almost like a funnel when bent. This was mostly random and I wasn't sure what I would do with this funnel. I punctured holes in the corner of the cardboard so I would be able to fasten it together using another smaller piece of cardboard stuck through both holes.
I then created a volcano-shaped structure and I realized I would be able to stick the funnel into the top of the volcano to make it stand upright. This is where the concept of balance came it. The funnel appears to be leaning backwards as if it could fall over. However, the volcano piece gave it stability to not fall over but also not to stand upright.
I then added some thinly cut cardboard pieces to give my piece more of an interesting look to it. From the front, the structure looks mostly visually balanced but as you move around it it changes its visual balance.
I also placed it next to some type of plant which its leaves really looked similar to the thinly cut cardboard on the top of my piece. I thought that this was a good combination/flow with the environment with something that looks like it should not belong in the natural world.
Overall this process made me understand how important it is to be able to adapt your design and come up with things with not much time. At first I had no idea what I was going to do but through the artistic process I ended up with something very interesting.
Artist 1: Richard Sweeney: Sweeney creates sculptures through manipulation of materials such as paper and cardboard. He cuts and bends the paper to create something complex. This is exactly what I did for my piece. These paper sculptures sometimes would be made into real permanent sculptures that stand outside.
Artist 2: Marta Chilindron: Chilindron creates sculptures that involve movement and transformation. My work is similar as it gives a sense of dynamic movement through the leaning funnel. Additionally, her sculptures usually shift as the viewer moves around them which is also a main component of my piece.

Chilindron de Chivo "Cuban Style Goat Stew"

The flavor of the meat is unique, unmistakable and at the same time, very delicious. The smells that it produces as it cooks will give itself away as everyone will know that you are making “Chilindron” which is the Cuban term to describe a goat stew. This stew was probably one of the most popular ones in my Cuban home town of Trinidad, Cuba back in the day, and there was this thing that if the goat was robbed (robao) it would taste better. Every year I make this dish to celebrate my father’s birthday.
Just brown the 5 pounds of goat meat in olive oil and add the green peppers, onions, and garlic. Sprinkle with salt and ground black pepper, leaf oregano, Sazon Goya con cilantro y achiote spice, a few bay leaves, 1 cup of tomato sauce, 1 medium can of diced tomatoes, and a small jar of olive and pimento salad (drained) while stirring at high heat. Add one bottle red wine to almost cover the meat. Merlot or Cabernet are both excellent, cover and simmer at medium low heat for 1 1/2 hours. At this time add 1 cup of water to cut down some of the acidity from the wine, then cover and cook for another hour. You will know when the goat is cooked to perfection as the meat will be tender or comes off the bone with ease by using a fork. If the wine reduces too much, you may add as much as needed to maintain the sauce.
When cooked, the color of the stew is a deep dark brown almost black, but when you pull the meat apart, it will show a beautiful red color full of goodness, enjoy!

Jazzed my way through making a beef stew with lots of onions, red wine, and roasted red peppers.
It’s similar to Spanish Chilindron, when I went to go look for recipes afterwards.
I was thinking about paprika, but just added some tomato paste & Calabrian chillies right at the end.

It’s not THAT much blood. “I got quite a lot from the butcher this morning. I need to cook them up before they go bad. These here are the steaks and over here I’m setting some aside for chilindron. You should never leave meat in the fridge for more than three days and I don’t like to freeze it. Best to use it while it’s still fresh in hand and mind, no?” It seems like he’ll rant forever about the meat but finally he turns back around to continue cutting off the fat. “When it’s done do you want to have some to take home?” He’ll have to find a container...

I decided to “work from home” today and I am so happy with how much I’ve gotten done.
Picked up my prescription from the pharmacy and got some groceries - ingredients for a Spanish stew (chilindron)Â
Scooped the kitty litter and took out the trash
Ran the dishwasher
Successfully sold 2 things on craigslist (a random suitcase I don’t need, my small end table)
Swept and mopped the house
My neighbors smoke A LOT. I have to ventilate my place constantly. And when I mop the house, the grime that comes up on the mop pad smells like cigarette smoke too. I won’t miss that when I move!Â
I’m hoping to do some packing today. I already packed my books, my jewelry, half my summer clothes, and most of my winter clothes. I’d like to pack the rest of my summer clothes today.Â
