The Viceroy Rule: How NASCAR Learned from Indycar's Biggest Mistake.
Or more broadly: the Viceroy Rule: How NASCAR learned from Indycar's biggest mistake, and how Indycar wound up reaping the benefits of NASCAR's solution.
So, our story begins in 1971: Marlboro is in its second year of sponsoring the USAC Championship Trail, Vel's Parnelli Jones Racing is the top team in Indycar racing with Al Unser as their driver, and USAC (particularly the Indianapolis 500) is starting to boom.
Al Unser had won the 1970 championship, the 1970 and 1971 Indianapolis 500s, and teammate Joe Leonard would win the 1971 championship on top of that.
Vel's Parnelli Jones Racing is becoming the first Indycar superteam.
And to top it all off, for 1972, VPJ would add Mario Andretti, winner of the 1969 Indianapolis 500 and 1969 USAC championship. Team owner Vel Miletich now had the last three champions and the winners of the last three Indianapolis 500s.
An expensive lineup, to be sure.
Thus, the team was happy to sign Viceroy cigarettes as their sponsor for the 1972 season. They would be on the cars of Unser and Andretti, while Joe Leonard carried on with Samsonite sponsorship.
This outraged Marlboro, because they were paying big money to sponsor USAC in 1970 and 1971, now for 1972, the top team was going to be sponsored by a rival cigarette company? It was outrageous, it was unfair, how can one be on the council and not be a master?
Thus, for 1972, Marlboro cut their series sponsorship.
Meanwhile, Penske's Mark Donohue would snatch the Indianapolis 500 away from Al Unser, while the championship would go to Joe Leonard once again - the one VPJ driver that wasn't sponsored by Viceroy cigarettes.
Marlboro would not return to Indycar racing until 1986, and at that point, it was CART, not USAC, that was calling the show. Furthermore, Vel's Parnelli Jones was gone, and the new super team in CART was Penske Racing. Marlboro would first partner with Penske in 1989, as part of a complicated swap deal with Patrick Racing, who ran the primary Marlboro car.
The deal goes as follows: Patrick Racing team owner would retire at the end of 1989, handing the reigns to former driver Chip Ganassi. Meanwhile, Penske would get driver Emerson Fittipaldi and sponsor Marlboro for the 1990 season. In the meantime, Patrick and Fittipaldi would get a Penske chassis for 1989, while Marlboro took over sponsorship duties for Penske's oval only third car.
The driver of that car? Al Unser, ironically enough.
Thus, for 1990, Penske would be a three-car team, with Emerson Fittipaldi and Danny Sullivan wearing Marlboro colors, whilst Rick Mears would continue in the Pennzoil yellow submarine for another year.
Around this time, Marlboro would also dump money into events as well: sponsoring the Marlboro Grand Prix at the Meadowlands, the Marlboro 500 at Michigan and later Fontana, and the Marlboro Challenge all-star race held at a variety of tracks in the late 80s and early 90s. Marlboro was all over CART, but they never became a series title sponsor again.
Marlboro money was all over the place, but that meant it was going all over the place as well, instead of being funneled into the series more broadly.
What could've happened in Marlboro remained as the USAC title sponsor? Would the USAC/CART split have even happened? How about the later CART/IRL split? Nobody can say for sure, but there was another series that benefitted greatly from those two splits: NASCAR.
The 1979 Daytona 500 held whilst the entire east coast of the United States was snowed in, ending with the iconic fistfight between Cale Yarborough and the Allison brothers. It happened during the second of the three great schisms in American Open Wheel Racing (the AAA/USAC split in 1955, and then the aforementioned two) propelled NASCAR from a regional sport in the southeast into a national phenomenon.
The likes of Dale Earnhardt, Dale Jarett, Mark Martin, Rusty Wallace, and Bill Elliott were already household names by the time the split happened, and then the likes of Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, and Dale Jr. emerged to carry NASCAR into its 2000s boom period.
NASCAR was taking advantage of Indycar's mistakes, and they were also learning from Indycar's mistakes.
Enter the Viceroy Rule.
NASCAR was perfectly content with the likes of Coke and Pepsi competing with each other, teams could be sponsored by rival companies, but when it came to sponsors partnering with NASCAR itself, those all got exclusivity contracts.
Thus, with NASCAR Cup sponsored by Winston cigarettes, there was never a Marlboro NASCAR, no Players, no KOOL, no Mild Seven, nothing. The only tobacco sponsorship in NASCAR was Winston itself, and Winston owned Camel that briefly sponsored Travis Carter Enterprises' #23 car.
This was actually to NASCAR's advantage, because while the likes of F1, Indycar, and MotoGP clung onto tobacco money until the bitter end, NASCAR's teams, by and large, developed a clean image with sponsors like Home Depot, UPS, and DeWalt.
Even alcohol sponsors in NASCAR were, until the mid-2000s, confined to light beers instead of hard liquors.
The bigger hurdle was that Unocal 76 (and later Sunoco) were the official fuel of NASCAR, so they had exclusivity too. However, that wasn't a particularly big problem, as the other fuel companies just promoted their motor oil brands instead. Hence to this day, Joey Logano's sponsorship is Shell Pennzoil, rather than simply Royal Dutch Shell. This is also the case with ExxonMobil's Mobil 1 brand, and historically the case with Texaco's Havoline brand.
Thus, the Viceroy rule was initially to NASCAR's gain, at least until 2003.
See, in 2003, Winston's sponsorship of NASCAR ended, and for 2004, telecommunications company Nextel took the reins. This caused a problem, since a lot of NASCAR teams' clean sponsors were in the telecommunications industry.
NASCAR's solution was for the likes of Cingular Wireless, on Robby Gordon's #31 for Richard Childress Racing and Alltel, on Ryan Newman's #12 for Penske Racing, was to grandfather in these deals signed before Nextel took over.
The problem with that is that the 2000s were a time of massive telecommunications transfers. In 2004, Cingular Wireless would buy out AT&T Wireless, leading to the orange and black Cingular car becoming orange and blue, but come 2006, and AT&T was now buying out the entirety of Cingular Wireless instead. Likewise, Alltel would be acquired by Verizon in 2008.
Hell, NASCAR itself wasn't safe from it, because Nextel was bought out by Sprint in 2006, leading to the championship becoming the Sprint Cup Series in 2008 when the Nextel brand was phased out.
Unfortunately, that didn't gain RCR or Penske any leniency.
AT&T and NASCAR would go into a series of lawsuits from 2007 and 2008 before eventually settling with AT&T leaving NASCAR, while Alltel left Cup after 2008. Penske's #12 car initially ran a black and red Penske scheme that resembled the Verizon logo, while Verizon itself sponsored the Nationwide Series (now Xfinity) team in 2009 and 2010.
Also in 2009, a promising young Champ Car driver named Will Power joined Penske, initially as a replacement for Helio Castroneves who was in the midst of a tax fraud case, but later in a third car running Verizon colors.
In 2010, this arrangement would become permanent, Will Power driving the #12 Verizon Penske Indycar, a car he drives to this day.
From 2014 to 2018, Verizon would also be the title sponsor of the entire Indycar series. During this time, Verizon would also appear as a sponsor on Juan Pablo Montoya's #2 Penske during select races.
Thus, Indycar's biggest mistakes in the 1970s turned into one of the biggest Indycar sponsorships in the 2010s, one that continues into the 2020s.

Audra and Bebe and Bernadette and Christine: The Good Fight
Diane Lockhart:
Tumblr media
After slapping the shit out of Julianna Margulies in the series finale of The Good Wife, Diane Lockhart became the star of her own spin-off series The Good Fight. On the eve of her retirement, Diane finds out she's dead broke due to a series of financial schemes perpetrated by friend and client Bernadette Peters' husband (whose name I don't care enough to look up). Following this disastrous turn of events, Diane becomes a partner at a Black Chicago-based firm, and is later upgraded to named partner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She's also a fashion icon, so jot that down.
Throughout six seasons, staunch-Democrat Diane spends her storylines addressing the social and political climate of the day. She handles cases revolving around fake news and the MeToo movement, briefly joins an underground anarchist group because Katie Finneran tells her to (understandable), gets SWAT-ed, has a few breakdowns, and enjoys the fun of microdosing. In short, she's living her best life.
Liz Reddick:
Tumblr media
In the second season, Liz Reddick-Lawrence joins the gang at Reddick, Boseman, & Lockhart. Formerly a U.S. Attorney, and Boseman's ex-wife, she joins the firm following her father's death. Initially, she and Diane get off to a rough start with their professional and personal differences. White name partner, Black firm... You can understand why. They spend the series butting heads as often as holding hands, and when the chips are down, they'll support each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Liz, another fashion icon, has a young son, divorces her cop husband, has a romantic liaison with Wayne Brady, has another affair with her ex-husband (and perjures herself when asked about it in court), and fucks a workplace subordinate (a white man, which is the real crime here). She and Diane briefly put aside their fight-of-the-week to lean into the rumor that they're lesbian lovers in order to win a court case. And we didn't even get a fake dating kiss out of it, so if anyone wants to join my class action lawsuit for emotional harm, let me know.
Judge Claudia Friend:
Tumblr media
Judges on The Good Fight, often have a fun little schtick that recurs throughout their guest appearances. Judge Claudia Friend is cursed to always preside over cases where the lawyers see fit to bicker like children the entire time. She is...so tired. (Hence why my multi-story saga about this minor character started with her getting absolutely railed over her desk by another judge--as played by Joanna Gleason).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In addition to three appearances in The Good Wife, including Audra McDonald's single guest appearance where they shared a scene, Claudia Friend presides over two episodes/cases in The Good Fight. And I, for one, would have liked more of this exhausted and exasperated judge in my life.
Lenore Rindell:
Tumblr media
Mother of early-series protagonist Maia Rindell, Lenore is a co-conspirator of the ponzi scheme that makes Diane flat broke season one. While her husband fucks off to some island to avoid prosecution, Lenore has to stay and face the music. She's also having an affair with her brother-in-law, so there's that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, sucks for Diane and all that, but take a look at this woman and tell me you wouldn't let her do whatever she wanted? I support women's wrongs, and I really support the costume department putting Bernadette in this pretty little nightie. Anyway, Lenore is eventually prosecuted for her part in the whole financial scheme and her character is written out of the show.
Other Divas who appear on The Good Fight include: Brenda Braxton (Madeline Gilford - 16eps), Andrea Martin (Francesca Lovatelli - 6eps), Mary Testa (Amy Ann Howard - 3eps), Katrina Lenk (Naftali Amato - 3eps), Jayne Houdyshell (Renee Rampling - 2eps), LaChanze (Julius's Wife - 2eps), Carolee Carmello (Judge Eve Sebald - 2 eps), Linda Emond (Judge Leora Kuhn - 1ep), Katie Finneran (Valerie Peyser - 1ep), Judith Light (Deidre Quinn - 1ep), Joanna Gleason (Judge Carmella Romano - 1ep), Kelli O'Hara (Deirdre Kresteva - 1ep), NaTasha Yvette Williams (Juror - 1ep).
Other Divas who appear on The Good Wife include: Mary Beth Peil (Jackie Florrick - 49eps), Anika Noni Rose (Wendy Scott-Carr - 14eps), Vanessa Williams (Courtney Paige - 4eps), Joanna Gleason (Judge Carmella Romano - 3eps), Linda Emond (Judge Leora Kuhn - 3eps), Jan Maxwell (Camilla Vargas - 2eps), Debra Monk (Tracy Mintz - 1ep), Julie White (Selma Krause - 1ep), Susan Blackwell (Professor Jolie - 1ep), Tovah Feldshuh (Lena - 1ep), Karen Ziemba (Lina Banner - 1ep), Ann Harada (Isabel St. Jean -1ep), Donna Murphy (Judge Alice Adelson - 1ep), Victoria Clark (Shannon Janderman - 1ep), Jackie Hoffman (Judge Maria Felletti - 1ep).
And pretty much every other Broadway actor you can think of.

the teens as birds in shoes!
Lincoln Li-Wilson: A great blue heron as they're very tall, found in California, adaptable, and they're pretty shy despite their size. They're also pretty quiet AND like to dance. They're monogamous and very family-oriented like a certain paladin! I gave the bird soccer cleats (or at least tried to), cause my man loves soccer.
Scary Marlowe: A Stellers Jay as they look metal as hell, are smart and resourceful due to their corvid status, found in California, and despite how they look, they're very social and need lots of attention from their peers. They have a loud, brash sound and have been known to eat, among many things. small reptiles (emo gecko rip). I gave her the iconic doc martins that every angsty teen with MCR in their playlist has.
Taylor Swift: A Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker, which despite it's size, is exceptionally sturdy, as in order to peck at the bark, they need to be able to keep their brains from being sloshed around from the pressure. They're from Japan, which I think Taylor would appreciate. They tend to hang out with other species, which is fitting since it seems he's friends with just about everyone. I gave him limited edition Beauty and the Beast anime promotional sneakers.
Normal Swallows-Oak-Garcia: A Chipping Sparrow. Partly just because of the pun with his dads name, but also because they're loud and skittish, are found in California, and are ground feeders. That last one doesn't have anything to do with him, but listen, my arms getting tired from reaching. I gave him mascot shoes that I imagine he always wears as Teenie the Teen!

My personal theory is that since almost every piece of media being made today is related to an existing IP or franchise, creators often had to find new ways to tie their original ideas to these already established proprieties if they want them to get made. That's why several recent spinoffs, adaptations, and reboots seem so far removed from their sources.
Cruella was a crazy woman trying to skin dalmatian puppies to make a coat, and somehow became a punk rock stylist disputing the spotlight with an old school stylist in her solo movie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers was a 90s animated show about the titular characters having a detective agency, and somehow became a meta comedy about animated actors in Hollywood in the live-action adaptation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Addams Family was a comedy about the culture clash between a ridiculously gothic family and Rockwell Americana world. In the Netflix series, they give the spotlight to Wednesday Addams and focus the plot on a supernatural boarding school.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Joker came from an iconic Batman villain that spread a toxic gas to make his victims die smiling and laughing, to a pastiche of mentally ill protagonists from classic Martin Scorsese movies in his hit film.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If things don't change, expect more weird ideas for spinoffs and adaptations that are strangely distant from their source material, like an alien invasion in the universe of Lilo and Stitch, a horror movie in the universe of Shrek, or a detective show in the universe of Harry Potter.

WILD KRATTS. Season 3 Review!!!!!!!!!!
One sentence review (1 being the worst-10 being a masterpiece) Hope you enjoy :)
Tumblr media
Hermit Crab Shell Exchange: WHY did Gormond call Chris "Green Pea" instead of "Green Grape"? However this episode have so many great moments to count. 9/10
When Fish Fly: I love the use of the "take a walk in my shoes" trope, it would have been cool if they stuck with the team switching roles until the very end but besides that this episode is iconic. See, finding creatures is like a piece of cake/10
Slider the Otter: How did Slider live that long? Cute episode but not the most memorable (sorry if you like this episode) 6/10
Mosquitoe Dragon: WHY Ya Hitting yourself?! Also not a bad invention by Zach completely backfired though. 7/10
Search for the Florida Panther: Wholesome in every which way, I loved the scene where Martin makes Chris go out and search for food, the live action part is also one of my favorites. 9/10
Osprey: I'm probably a bit bias but this episode is Amazing, fricking Jimmy loosing stuff is hilarious and not only do they make an episode of an animal that's the Mascot of my favorite football team ( though it goes by the nickname) they realeased it the year they won the superbowl and to make it even more amazing...Green and Blue are the team colors!!! 10/10 ( GO HAWKS 💙💚) ahem...anyways.
Bandito the Black Footed Ferret: Getting a bit of name dejavu and Martin not learning his lesson from the Googly Eye: The Night Guru episode tsk tsk tsk, good episode though. 8/10
Where the Bison Roam: The talking Bison are cursed, and they switched who was Lewis and who was Clark midway through the episode, a little rough around the edges but it's still good 8/10
Crocogator Contest: Very informative still remember the difference between an Alligator and a Crocodile because of this episode also poor Jimmy. 7/10
The Amazing Creature Race: Team Fastfeet all the way babbbbbyyyyyy!!! Though we were cheated out of a Chrizelle moment, oh well 6/10.
Prarie Who: Just a fun episode, but what in the creature world was Koki doing? Also all those crash landings would have killed them except for Jimmy. 9 Yips/10
Mystery on the Prarie: I've been impaled the episode, poor Jimmy, Bush Chris needs to return and where is Moo after this episode? (Spoilers Moo wasn't full grown in the Christmas special) 8/10
Chameleons on Target: Bruh why was Aviva blaming the Kratt Brothers for that whole ring chip thing? The way they hid was funny. 7/10
Opossum in my Pocket: Gormond commits attempted murder on the Kratt Brothers. 8/10
Fossa Palooza: Best mothers day episode EVER, we saw Mama Kratt and their old neighborhood? 10/10
Mini Madagascar: 0_0 why they make the mouse lemur scary though. 7/10
Aye Aye: I love the pirate theme and why do Jimmy be lazy (I get it its a personality trait of his but still) but I mean Aviva could have done it also Aghhh. 7/10
Lemur Legs: Best episode opening in my opinion, they should have named one of the lemurs Zaboo instead of Bob but it was still funny. That sarcastic clap the WK crew did was also great 10/10
Under the Frozen Pond: Child endangerment and the WK team not playing fair at Hockey because they were loosing (but they were there first soooo) 7/10
Lemur Skink Fight: Tried a Tameron fruit before, it wasn't that great, unlike this episode, Also this was one of Donita's worse ideas she should stick to clothing. 8/10
Golden Bamboo Lemur: The dress looked better without the lemur, Why doesn't Donita utilize the hypnosis technology more often and I can't believe the Kratt Bros almost forgot Koki and Jimmy, Not cool man. 7/10
Tenric Treasure Hunt: Obi-Wan Kratt is big sad for loosing his Brother to the River. 8/10
Praying Mantis: I love this episode! Props to the animators for changing the "What if" animation to fit the live action bit, but what was up with that toy Monkey, still gives me the hebijibbies. 10/10
Capture the Fishmoblie: Technically not cheating if Aviva just handed it to them. 7/10
Back in Creature Time: THEY NEED TO MAKE A SEQUEL!!! Zach wanting to make the Kratt Brothers extinct is very dark I love it, also by changing where Great Grand daddy Gormond landed, potentially be a risk to whether or not Gormond would still exist? Also MARTIN WHY YOU SMUGGLING A TASMANIAN TIGER?!?! STOP. 10/10
Great season but I feel like after this season the writing changed...

Shaft and the Era of Blaxploitation
Last year, Special Collections and Archives at the University of Iowa Libraries acquired items to form a new collection: the Black Film and Television Collection. In honor of Black History Month, we’re shining a spotlight on a different item from this collection each week.
In last week’s post, we discussed the lobby card for Oscar Micheaux’s 1938 film Swing, starring Cora Green. Our next spotlight is on original materials from the 1971 film Shaft, which includes the script used in the production in the movie, which was a defining entry in the Blaxploitation genre.
What is “Blaxploitation?”
We’ll start with the obvious: the word itself blends “Black” and “exploitation” and was coined by Beverly Hills-Hollywood NAACP president Junius Griffin in 1972 and wasn’t in the context of praise.
Blaxploitation movies are made by black filmmakers with black actors for black audiences. They portray strong black characters who were the heroes and leads. During the mid- to early 1970s, more than 200 movies of the genre were made, in subgenres such as horror, westerns, comedy, drama, and action.
Rather than trying to dispel stereotypes, movies like Shaft reinforce them. And while the movies were popular with audiences, that approach did create some critics, like Junius Griffin and other NAACP members.
Exploiting a lurid loophole
The Hays Code ruled Hollywood from 1934 to 1968, enforcing a strict set of moral standards for films. But filmmakers tend to be creative people, and “exploitation films” were the loophole they chose. If they depicted these offensive (and entertaining) subjects under the guise of a cautionary tale, they could get away with including them.
Over the years, court cases and boundary-breakers chipped away at the Hays Code. In 1968—the same year most history textbooks mark as the end of the Civil Rights Movement because it coincides with the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.—the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) scrapped the Code in favor of the film rating system. It was into these unique circumstances that a new genre—Blaxploitation—was born.
John Shaft’s world
Shaft is an adaptation of Ernest Tidyman’s 1970 detective novel, directed by Gordon Parks. Opening on an urban panorama overlaid with a funk soundtrack, the movie stars Richard Roundtree as John Shaft, a stylish and suave private detective in New York who is approached by the boss of a Harlem organized crime family (Moses Gunn) in search of his kidnapped daughter (Sherri Brewer). In the course of his mission, Shaft dispatches mafiosos, teams up with activists in the Black Power Movement, and delivers enough one-liners to cement his legacy as one of the iconic characters of 20th century film.
Even a brief glimpse at the original movie script’s pages (like the one shown above) showcase the swagger and bombast of the protagonist, who would go on to anchor multiple sequels. The movie’s iconic theme song, written and recorded by Isaac Hayes, has been sampled and reused dozens of times since the movie’s release, and the film itself has been preserved by the Library of Congress. It provides one of the early blueprints for the Blaxploitation genre, which continued to flourish throughout the 1970s.
It’s well worth noting that while Shaft’s director, stars, and core audience were Black, its writers were both white men. This information certainly complicates how many viewers receive the film’s representation of Black characters—and those complications became the focus of blaxploitation’s most vocal detractors.
Blaxploitation may have had its heyday in the 1970s, but it’s never truly ended. The genre was carried into the 21st century by the generation of filmmakers it inspired, including John Singleton, Spike Lee, and the Hughes Brothers.
Our next entry will be a look at Cheryl Dunye’s 1997 film The Watermelon Woman, and the growing influence of Black women in the film industry.
---Natalee Dawson, Communication Coordinator at UIowa Libraries with assistance from Anne Bassett, Liz Riordan, and Jerome Kirby

The Karate Kid (1984)
Tumblr media
Before today, I had never seen The Karate Kid. I assumed the love directed towards it came from nostalgia and the film being released at the right time, in the right environment. I couldn’t have been more wrong. This is a sweet, surprisingly deep crowd-pleaser with many memorable scenes to go with its iconic characters and great performances.
In 1984, Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and his mother (Randee Heller) move from Newark to Los Angeles. After befriending Ali Mills (Elisabeth Shue), Daniel is beaten by her jealous ex-boyfriend, a karate black belt named Johnny (Billy Zabka). Taking pity upon Daniel is Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki “Pat” Morita), who senses that Johnny and his gang’s bad behavior stems from their instruction at the Cobra Kai Karate club.
Like John G. Avildsen’s Rocky, The Karate Kid shows relatively little of its sport but makes you care for it more than you thought was possible by betting its chips on the characters. It’s impossible not to relate to Daniel. Bright and good-natured but filled with self-doubt thanks to his lower-class status and inability to stand up to the Cobra Kais, you desperately want things to work out for him. You want him to develop the karate skills necessary to defend himself. More importantly, you want Daniel to become confident enough for him and Ali to become an item. It helps that Ralph Macchio and Elisabeth Shue have terrific chemistry. Whenever something threatens to keep them apart - be it Ali’s snooty parents, Johnny, normal teenage drama or Daniel’s insecurities - your emotions swell.
If you weren’t already invested, you hate the Cobra Kais so much you keep watching, hoping they'll get their (hopefully violent) comeuppance. This is where Mr. Miyagi comes in. He could’ve easily been a stereotype or a one-dimensional supporting character; an excuse to get the plot going. Instead, he’s a fully realized person with a unique brand of humor and wisdom. It’s hard to choose if the film’s best scenes are the tender dates and heartfelt talks between Daniel and Ali, or the training sequences with Daniel and Miyagi. The latter contain big laughs, a touching father-son-like relationship and unexpected depth.
Behind Daniel and Johnny, we have two very different teachers. The second we walk into the Cobra Kai club, we see photos of John Kreese (Martin Kove) proudly showing off his military career and belting out his mantra that mercy is for the weak, that the point of karate is to brutally crush your opponent. He cares nothing for his students and has only contempt for kind Mr. Miyagi. By contrast, the humble Okinawan immigrant does not flaunt his martial arts skills or military career. He comes to offer his services to Daniel because he wants to teach the boy self-defense. To Miyagi, karate is an extension of everyday life. He teaches the sport by putting Daniel in real-life places and situations that incorporate the moves his pupil needs to practice. Karate is a naturally occurring process, whereas Kreese hammers the idea of violence into his students. The brutality he forces into their lives manifests as aggression and they become twisted; violent. The methods of instruction couldn’t be more different.
The Karate Kid has a lot to offer. The soundtrack is terrific. The story takes you through a full gamut of emotions - everything from heartbreaks to laugh-out-loud laughs, the joys of first love, the tears of joy from a perfect birthday gift and the exhilaration of a competition whose final match might as well symbolize the triumph of good over evil. The performances are uniformly strong. The screenplay is thoughtful. The characters are unforgettable. It’s no wonder if popularized karate in North America. This is no mere “right time, right place” movie. It has lasting power and will delight audiences for generations. (September 10, 2021)

Hud (1963) Directed by Martin Ritt
Yes, we all enjoy Paul Newman in The Sting, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and The Long Hot Summer. For a few fans, Slapshot is a number one cult item. Characters Butch Cassidy and Cool Hand Luke are icons now. Yet in order to witness Newman embody a role—to lose himself in a character in the manner of Brando or Olivier—Hud is essential viewing.
Newman plays an ornery cuss named Hud Bannon, the ill-tempered, unredeemable son of rancher Homer Bannon (Melvin Douglas, dominating the screen). He’s a smartass in a Stetson and boots; he likes to drink hard and break hearts, and he can handle himself in a fight. He tears across the desert highway in a giant Cadillac convertible like he owns the state, and one might get the impression he was having a good time were it not for that Texas-size chip on his shoulder.
No one has a clue as to what’s really bothering Hud. His younger nephew (Brandon de Wilde in the wide-eyed-admirer role that he patented in the classic western Shane) is baffled, as are most of the folks foolish enough to get in Hud’s way. The family housekeeper (a mighty sexy Patricia Neal as a plain country girl whose plainness warrants a closer examination) is less baffled. What’s obvious to her is that this fine old family line has finally produced a bonafide S.O.B — an heir abhorrent, as it were — who rejects and despises everything his father represents.
This is Greek tragedy stuff, made even larger than life by a bristling script that plays as well on its 60th birthday (this coming November) as when it first hit screens. It looks as good, too, compliments of cinematographer James Wong Howe’s breathtaking skill with a Panavision camera and black-and-white film stock.

The easy-to-use platform contains a diverse selection of rare, one-of-a-kind studio gear and memorabilia that anyone can view and bid on. All items available on the ANALOGr platform are sold without any buyer premium fees. Once a consignor has chosen the winning bid for a given item, the auction closes and the item along with its updated provenance records are delivered to the buyer. The ANALOGr marketplace has handled over $3 million in sales through word of mouth alone, with 95% of sales being completed without any timed element and for up to 30% less cost than competitors.
Unlike typical auction houses that are driven by commissions from timed auctions, ANALOGr is aligned with the consignor in maximizing value through true collaboration in the editorial, reserve pricing, sales channel, and final say on the acceptance of all winning bids. In exchange for ANALOGr's services (including travel, storage, insurance, shipping, packing, photography, video production, editorial, sales events, marketing and PR) consignors pay a flat percentage.
The company's mission is to tell the story of each item through its owner's passionate relationship with it, which is evidenced by the thorough records and detailed descriptions included in every listing. A fundamental component of this mission is to act as historical archivists of musical items, chronicling each piece's unique journey in order to show the world the true story of these amazing artifacts. The ANALOGr team acts as an advocate for the inclusion of consignors and dedicates every resource to providing a truly boutique concierge service.
"Every picture tells a story, as does every instrument, machine, vinyl, outfit, or keepsake," says Francis Porter, the co-founder and COO of ANALOGr. "Capturing the essential stories reverberating from these objects through investigation, verification, and production is our north star. Beyond just authenticating, our approach creates more value for our consignors by focusing on the emotional gravity of these historic items associated with pop culture's iconic moments."
ANALOGr differs from the traditional memorabilia and auction spaces through its enhanced priority on managing the assets of its collectors with a long-term approach, as well as through the flexibility and collaboration it offers consignors over the sales process.

Method 2: Use a Paid SSD Drive Checker (DriveDx)ĭriveDx is an advanced SSD health monitor capable of analyzing the current state of the drive using all available health indicators, such as SSD wear out/write endurance, I/O errors, pending sectors, reallocated bad sectors, and others. And if you see “Not Supported,” then your SSD doesn’t provide any information about its health. If it reads “Failing,” then there’s something wrong with it.
If the field reads “Verified,” then your SSD is healthy.

Launch Disk Utility (you can find it in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder).
How to perform a SMART SSD test with Disk Utility: The only caveat is that Disk Utility provides only a rudimental overview of your disk’s health, essentially telling you only if it’s in good or bad health.

Method 1: Check SMART Status on macOS with Disk UtilityĪs a Mac user, you can quickly and easily check the SMART status of any SSD using Disk Utility.
#SSD HEALTH TEST HOW TO#
But before we do that, we need to explain how to perform a basic SSD smart status check on macOS. Let’s take a closer look at one free and one paid SSD health checker so you can pick the one that fits your needs the best. There are multiple ways to check the health of an SSD on a Mac. Regardless of what causes the excessive wear, all M1 Mac users should test SSD health using an SSD diagnostic tool, and we recommend three such tools in the next section of this article. It could be the fact that the M1 chip is using internal storage for memory swap, or it could be an undiscovered bug in macOS Big Sur or some app used by all affected users. Unfortunately, it seems that something is causing some M1 Macs to write far more new data than what’s normal. Such SSDs can write over 80 GB of new data every day for 5 years before potentially becoming unstable, so M1 Mac users should theoretically have nothing to worry about. Even basic 256 GB SSDs come with a 150 TBW rating. What’s more, modern SSDs use wear-leveling technology to distribute data evenly across all physical sectors, prolonging the total lifespan.īecause of all these factors, most estimates put the age limit for SSDs around 10 years. While that may not sound like much, it’s important to realize that SSDs don’t degrade when reading data-only when writing new data. We know that Apple uses Toshiba TLC NAND flash chips for its SSD drives, which should endure up to 3,000 write cycles per physical sector based on the current lithography process. That doesn’t mean that they would instantly become unusable, but their users could experience major stability issues and, in extreme cases, data loss. Recently, several M1 Mac power users have shared alarming usage reports indicating extremely high drive writes over a relatively short time.īased on the wear of the SSD inside his 2 TB M1 Mac, developer Hector Martin calculated that 256 GB models could exceed their TBW in less than half a year.
