CHEIRO – THE FATHER OF MODERN PALMISTRY
Tumblr media
Cheiro, (pronounced K’i-ro) born William John Warner (November 1, 1866 – October 8, 1936) was the father of modern palmistry.  He was also known professionally as Count Louis Hamon. Cheiro was without any doubt an unusually gifted astrologer and palmist and provided modern-day palmists with an amazing body of reference work.
Cheiro was an Irish astrologer and a well-known figure in the budding occult world of the early 20th century. He was born to William and Margaret Warner in a village outside Dublin.  Throughout his professional life, he maintained several pseudonyms including Count Louis Hamon, Count Leigh de Hamong, and most famous name, Cheiro.  As you might have figured out, the name Cheiro is derived from the word cheiromancy, which means palmistry. He was a clairvoyant who taught palmistry, astrology, and Chaldean numerology.  During his career, he circulated in the circle of very famous people worldwide.  His divination skills were heralded and he was known to make impactful predictions connected to his clients.
As a young man, Cheiro traveled to Bombay, India.  There he met Guru Chitpavan Brahmin, who allowed him to study ancient texts about palmistry.  He spent two years immersed in developing his own skills as a palmist.  He then returned to Europe, but not to his homeland, instead setting up a palm reading practice in London, England.  His first client was Arthur Balfour, who was a member of the new Society for Psychical Research. This group was researching all types of psychic activity throughout England. Mr. Balfour was quite impressed with his reading, so much that he told all his friends, who were quite influential at the time. Word of mouth brought Cherio fame and fortune, especially with the upper classes. He quickly became known as one of the most popular and influential seers of his time across Europe and in America.  The accuracy of his predictions was the key reason that many famous celebrities and members of royalty consulted him on a wide variety of topics.
The Hands of Celebrities
Cheiro read the palms of Sir Austen Chamberlain, Mark Twain, Dame Nellie Melba, Oscar Wilde, Grover Cleveland, Thomas Edison, Sarah Bernhardt, Mata Hari and the Prince of Wales to name a few.  Not only did he read the palms of famous individuals, but he also documented those sessions and made palm prints of their hands.  As part of the overall experience, he kept a journal in which he would ask patrons to write personal thoughts on their experience with their readings.  Mark Twain agreed to sit for a reading, even though he was skeptical of palmistry.  He was so impressed with the accuracy of his reading, he made use of palmistry in one of his stories called, ‘Pudd’n Head Wilson’.  He wrote a wonderful statement in Cherio’s journal stating how moved he was by the experience.
He correctly predicted that the Jews would return to Palestine and the country would again be called Israel.  He also predicted the date of Queen Victoria’s death, the year and month when King Edward VII would die, and the assassination of Italy’s King Humbert.  These are just a few of the accurate predictions that he made about world leaders.  He became so popular that he stayed in America, Hollywood specifically, and saw over a dozen client per day until his death in 1936 following a heart attack.
Written Works
Cheiro amassed a great fortune writing books on palmistry, astrology, numerology and the occult.  Many of his works are still in print today and they have been vital to palmists still today.
Cheiro’s Written Works
Numerology Cheiro’s Book of Numbers – 1926

Recently, India's most well-known film script-writer Salim Khan (Salmaan Khan's father) has said to a senior journalist in an interview: "Does anyone remember who the chief minister of Maharashtra was during the Mumbai riots which were no less deadly than the Gujarat riots of 2002?" Does anyone recall the name of the chief minister of UP during Malliana and Meerut riots or that of the Bihar CM when the Bhagalpur or Jamshedpur riots under Congress regimes took place? Do we hear names of earlier chief ministers of Gujarat under whose charge, hundreds of riots took place in post-Independence India? Does anyone remember who was in-charge of Delhi's security when the 1984 massacre of Sikhs took place in the capital of India? How come Narendra Modi has been singled out as the Devil Incarnate as if he personally carried out all the killings during the riots of 2002?" No speck of doubt about what Salim Khan has said. The criminal brigade has always been silent on Godhra Carnage that led to 2002 riots. When one says Gujarat's agriculture growth is 10-11% since whole last decade The other says 2002 Riots! When one says he made the Asia's biggest solar plant, The other says 2002 Riots! When one says Gujarat is the only state in the whole of India to provide 24*7 and 365 days electricity to almost all of its 18,000 villages, The other says 2002 Riots! When one says - World Bank's statement of 2011 said, Gujarat roads are equivalent to international standards, The other says 2002 Riots! When one says Gujarat is the first State in country to have "high speed wireless Broadband service in its all 18,000 villages, The other says 2002 Riots! When one says Forbes Magazine rated Ahmadabad as the fastest growing city in India and 3rd in the world, The other says 2002 Riots! When one says Gujarat Tourism is growing faster than ever before, The other says 2002 Riots! When one says according to central govt's Labour Bureau's report, Gujarat has the lowest unemployment rate in country, The other says 2002 Riots! When Narendra Modi is being chosen as the best current Indian leader in almost all surveys & polls again and again The other says 2002 Riots! When one says 2003-2013 are the only 10 straight years in Gujarat history which are totally riot-free, The other STILL says 2002 Riots! But when we remind them about riots which occurred during Congress and in Communist Party rule : 1947 Bengal....5,000 to 10,000 dead ...CONGRESS RULE. 1948 Maharashtra....2000 + Chitpavans DEAD..........CONGRESS RULE. 1969 Ahmedabad...512 DEAD........CONGRESS RULE. 1980 Moradabad...2,000 DEAD...CONGRESS RULE. 1983 Nellie Assam.....5,000 DEAD...CONGRESS RULE. 1984 anti-Sikh Delhi...2,733 DEAD...CONGRESS RULE 1989 Bhagalpur......1,070 DEAD......CONGRESS RULE 1990 Hyderabad......300 PLUS DEAD....CONGRESS RULE 1992 Mumbai....2000 DEAD....CONGRESS RULE they become totally deaf ..................because they have only one answer - Gujarat riots of 2002! Congress and Opposition Parties are hypocrites. The youth of India says:............ We are not interested in 2002, We are only interested in 2022 and our future. That’s why Modi has won CM post 3 times and PM post twice already!

Far-right , proto-fascist Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS), the most secretive and most powerful organization in India was founded in 1925, its founding ideologues were greatly influenced by European fascism. They openly praised Hitler and Mussolini, and compared Indian Muslims to the “Jews of Germany”. It has worked ceaselessly for 95 years toward having India formally declared a Hindu Nation. Its declared enemies are Muslims, Christians, and Communists.
The RSS runs a shadow government that functions through tens of thousands of shakhas (branches) and other ideologically affiliated organizations with different names – some of them astonishingly violent – spread across the country. Traditionally controlled by a sect of west coast Brahmins. known as Chitpavan Brahmins, the RSS today has white supremacists and racists from the United States and Europe circling around it, writing in praise of Hinduism’s age-old practice of caste. It’s what is more accurately known as Brahminism – a brutal system of social hierarchy they envy for its elaborate, institutionalized cruelty, which has survived more or less intact from ancient times. Brahminism also has admirers in the most unexpected places. One of them, you will be saddened to know, was Mohandas Gandhi – who considered caste to be the “genius” of Hindu society. I have written at length about Gandhi’s attitude toward caste and race in a book called The Doctor and The Saint, so I will not dwell on it now.
Today the RSS boasts of having a trained militia of six hundred thousand members who proudly call themselves swayam-sevaks (volunteers), whose numbers include the prime minister and most of his cabinet. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) functions as the parliamentary political department of the RSS. Ram Madhav, its secretary is a member of the RSS. By insisting on viewing the BJP as an independent entity, as an ordinary, right wing, conservative political party, by inadvertently or deliberately minimizing its organic connection to the RSS, many in the Indian and the international media, as well as many who claim to be secular and liberal, have eased its path to political power.

In the wake of the recent Dalit-Brahmin animosities and resentments of centuries resurfacing and bubbling over into riots, everyone is now aware of the Battle of Koregaon on January 1, 1818, wherein 834 troops of the Bombay Native Infantry led by Captain Francis Staunton defeated an overwhelmingly superior force of 30,000 of Peshwa Baji Rao II.
[...]
The question on many people’s lips is, why would anyone take kindly to a group of people who take pride in openly siding with colonial invaders against defenders of the “homeland” and making a decisive battle that sealed the fate of the Maratha empire, paving the way for British dominance in western India, a cause célèbre?
The answer probably lies in how we interpret this sub-continent from our nationalist lens as a singular monolithic entity before the British subjugated the sub-continent. The idea of an India as an integral entity existing in continuum is most attractive when one describes the Revolt of 1857 as the First War of Independence. I will address this briefly.
[...]
Moreover, we should remember that a large number of kingdoms and principalities like Kashmir, Kapurthala, Bikaner, Bijawar, Sirohi, Mewar and Alwar among others supported the British, which would take away the pan-Indian claims of nationalist unity.  It is debatable whether Baji Rao II was doing anything more than just that - defending the Maratha empire against invaders. Yesterday, Aurangzeb, today the British.
In an India riven by regions, religions castes and sub-castes competing for political space and resources you traditionally pick your enemy according to whoever threatens the survival of your identity group and its interests. To the so-called "untouchable lower castes", the enemy is the Brahmin, and justifiably so, considering the millennia of oppression they have been subjected to. It is not remarkable that Ambedkar would choose to appropriate the victory of the British in Koregaon as a Mahar victory over the Brahmin Peshwas, to consolidate, mobilise and empower his constituency.
It is equally not remarkable given their animosities towards the Muslims that the Chitpavan Brahmins of the RSS never took part in the freedom struggle, remaining subservient to the British and opposed the mass movements for India’s freedom in every phase of the struggle. Their claim to a larger patriotism and indignation at the Bhima Koregaon monument being paid obeisance smacks of two faced-ness and masks their resentment of lower caste Dalits flooding Shanivarvada, which is holy ground to them.
For those that aren’t aware in 1818 there was a battle in which a military force comprised largely of Dalit soldiers allied with the British defeated a vastely numerically superior Maratha army led by Peshwa Bajirao II. The anniversary of the battle has become a celebration of Dalits defeating an army of upper-caste oppressors but has become violently opposed by Hindu nationalists who see it as “anti-Indian” and “divisive”. The irony of course is that these same Hindutva opposed commemoration of the Muslim Mysorean ruler Tipu Sultan who also fought against the British because well you know

Bajirao Mastani
(18th December,2015)
The movie revolves around a tragic love story between the Maratha Peshwa Bajirao I and his wife, the Bundela princess Mastani. Mastani,  whose mother was Muslim was not accepted into the orthodox Chitpavan brahmana family of Bajirao I and the film chronicles the hardships the Peshwa and Mastani faced in their journey for love. There were sporadic protests regarding the portrayal of the characters- with objections being raised on the attire of the queens and  showing the Peshwa and his queens dancing, almost unthinkable in the orthodox Peshwai. Many historians have pointed out that while it is indeed true that Bajirao and Mastani were indeed married, the nature of their romance cannot be verified due to the absence of any records on the women and the household of the Peshwa. The love story, however, has been popularised in the state of Maharashtra through several myths and legends surrounding them, which are often taken to be historical by the common populace--a film on this topic further entrenches the idea that such myths and legends are historically accurate, when such a claim cannot be made with great certainty.

Jai Jai Jagadisha (Marathi hymn, India)
Marathi Christians (मराठी ख्रिस्ती; Marāṭhī Khristī) are an ethno-religious community of Indian state of Maharashtra. According to the Census of India, there are over a million Christians in Maharashtra constituting 1.5% of the state's population. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marathi_Christians
Here is a popular Marathi Christian song recently recorded; an English summary of the lyrics is below.
“Jai Jai Jagadisha” composed by Rev. Narayan Vaman Tilak , a very composer and theologian (see below). Hear two other versions below.
youtube
+++
I asked on the Youtube page if someone could help me understand the lyrics, and Besty Reuben kindly responded with this:
This Marathi hymn is a praise to the Triune God. It is a cry invoking God's presence among men. The words come out of an intimate relationship with the Creator, thanking him for all that He is and therefore blessing the name of The Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit. The writer wants the glory of God to fill Him and wants the same for the entire world. He wants to convey the message that "God is all we need". The earth is personified as longing for God's mercy, grace and blessing. We can also say that the writer may be in deep personal thought about how wonderful the world would be if Immanuel - God is with us. This song was popularly sung as an opening hymn in schools, church gatherings and Christian get-togethers. One of my favourite hymns.
+++
About the composer:
Narayan Vaman Tilak (6 December 1861 – 9 May 1919) was a Marathi poet from the Konkan region of then Bombay Presidency in British India, and a famous convert to Christianity from Chitpavan Brahmin Community.
Read a lengthy summary of his life and ministry at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narayan_Waman_Tilak
He was an early leader in contextualization of local art forms to carry the Christian message. Here’ are some excerpts from the WIkipedia article:
From his Hindu years, he composed kirtans (musical religious services with a mixture of poetry and dramatic retelling of Hindu stories of religious inspiration, ...  This continued into his Christian years when he led kirtans, trained Christian kirtankars, including his wife Laxmi, and published a little handbook Kirtan Kalap as a guide ...  Owing to the very many hundred of devotional hymns which Rev. Tilak composed for church worship and for singing in villages, others saw him as the "Tagore of Western India."
After about ten years as a Christian he began expressing his faith in local idioms, particularly the poetic style of the Varkari Hindu sampradaya of Maharashtra. The many songs he composed remain very popular among Marathi speaking Christians. But Tilak was a critic of traditional Christianity, and for the last two years of his life moved beyond the church to focus on developing a new brotherhood of baptized and unbaptized disciples of Jesus. This new approach never took root due to Tilak's early death in Mumbai on May 9, 1919.
Tilak's son, Devdatt Narayan Tilak, edited and published the epic poem Christayana.
Tilak composed over a hundred Christian devotional songs in Marathi in either abhanga (अभंग) or ovi (ओवी) form. They were published in a book titled "Abhanganjali" (अभंगांजली).
Besides the initial parts ofthe eopic Khristayan (ख्रिस्तायन), Tilak wrote over 2,100 long poems comprising several hundred lines each.
+++
I recommend these books by my cholarly friend and mentor in :contextualization issues of India, who wrote two detailed books on Tilak’s life and art.
Richard, H.L., Following Jesus in the Hindu Context: The intriguing implications of N.V. Tilak’s life and thought. Revised American edition. Pasadena: William Carey Library, 1998.

🤓QOTD:: Which personality inspires you the most and why?. ▪▪▪《BOOK REVIEW》▪▪▪ . BOOK: Savarkar (The true story of the Father of Hindutva) WRITER: Vaibhav Purandare GENRE: Biography MY RATINGS: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪ . The book is a biographical account of the man who coined the term 'Hindutva' for the first time but was known to be preaching about Hindu-Muslim unity at an initial phase of his life. Savarkar was born in Chitpavan Brahman community of Konkan at a place some 20kms from Nasik( earlier called Panchavati, the same place where Ram, Sita and Lakshman lived during the exile). The book has recited the story from Savarkar's preadolescence to his shaping of thought process during his youth and how he stood up to his ideology till the very edge of his life. 🔅 The book is a complete fact-based narration and has done full justice to the reader as it seems to be well inquired and the author has put in a lot of heavy work into it. 🔅 Also, the book has connected well to the other concurrent historical occurrences going in the country. That made things relatable to other events. 🔅 I felt since I know things about Indian History so reading it was easy for me but if you're not much acquainted with Indian History you might find it boring at some places. 🔅I personally like reading history books So, for me it was a much needed and wanted read. 🔅 I would say for any Indian today, reading this book or more specifically knowing Savarkar himself through books is an essential thing. And hence I picked this book as I haven't read much about him and I don't believe in hearsays. 🔅 I personally did not know a lot of things about Savarkar and this book helped me know them. .
