March 30, 2021 | Freaks and Geeks, “Chokin’ and Tokin’” (S1E13)

The first time I watched the one and only season of Freaks and Geeks was for James Franco. The second time I watched it (which was this time) was out of boredom. I cannot say I actually enjoy this show (and yet I rewatched it), but the ratings of this show are very high: 8.8/10 on IMDb, 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, 4.9/5 on Google. 

In episode 13, “Chokin’ and Tokin’,” Mr. Rosso (Dave Allen) introduces Daniel Desario (James Franco) and Ken Miller (Seth Rogen) to Frank (Doug Spinuzza), a former student of the high school. The conversation between Daniel, Ken, and Frank goes as follows:

Frank: You into Floyd?

Ken: Oh, hell, yeah.

Frank: I saw them at the Pyramids.

Daniel: The Egyptian pyramids?

Ken: Uh, I don’t think they’ve ever played the Pyramids.

But “it was the Dead” who did. (Full[?] transcript of the episode is here.)

After Frank leaves, Mr. Rosso says to Daniel and Ken, “I want you to remember that man.” “Why?” “’cause he’s fried out of his mind.” Don’t do weed is the lesson, I guess.

Out of curiosity, I looked up concerts at the Pyramids, and the article titled “10 International Artists Who Performed At The Pyramids” from NileFM came up. The ten artists of the list are

I must confess: I'm so depressed n stressed and I'm not gonna lie I still wanna die but what keeps me goin is that marijuana high Grade A, there's no better way I must say Day after day, tokin, jokin n chokin till it feels like our lungs n throat are broken Slowly we croakin But for now it's a great temporary tease to feel at ease Cause lets be honest, smoking weed is the bees knees disregarding its potential fees Shii, puff puff pass n let's create a song so everyone can sing along Break it up, grind it down, now it's time to rip the bong "Weed brings people together" So why can't we all just smoke up n get along

Theories I have as to why they didn’t show Sam laughing in this scene

They didn’t want to show his mouth full,as he’d just taken a bite before Neal says the line about Ms. Foote (they do show one where he laughs with food between his teeth in another episode though, different director on that episode though)

The scene isn’t supposed to play out comedically, though it starts off that way, they probably didn’t want to make it look like a joke ( it takes a very “that escalated quickly” turn right after this part)

The boom mic picked it up and they left it in

Also when they cut back to him, his mouth is empty,so either he swallowed it really fast or spat it out I don’t know.

There’s no swallowing noises or that weird inhaling snort laugh people do with their mouths full sometimes, or they edited it out, which they did probably
