Making a #fastplaying passage feel slow by understanding the underlying shifts and interval structure. This passage is from #lagazzaladra #overture by #rossini mm 446-453, but can be generalized for any passage with repeated figuration over #chordchanges These steps can be generalized for similar passages in other pieces: 5 videos: 1) Play the first note of each measure. Since this passage is in the high register, I practice in lower octaves to establish the pitch clearly in my mind. ~swipe left~ 2) Practice the underlying shift. In this passage, the 2nd finger makes the underlying shift. I practice these notes (B, C#) in a single position first so I can hear the notes clearly, then I play these notes with the performance fingering, which includes the shift. ~swipe left~ 3) Repeat the first interval of each measure. This helps with intonation as well as finger placement. ~swipe left~ 4) Complete measures close to performance tempo with pauses between each measure. Shift carefully between measures and continue only after the shift is secure. Play each measure several times, then only once each, pausing before each measure. ~swipe left~ 5) Performance version - The better I understand the underlying shifts and intervals, the slower the passage feels when I play it even though the notes go by quickly! Thinking about doing some more chord videos like this (what do you think?). Always nice to see the simplicity of progressions as a songwriter. No need to try too much. Usually 3-5 chords will do. There’s so many ways to add variety in the changes through the arrangement and of course the actual production. This #tameimpala song #feelslikeweonlygobackwards technically changes keys at the verse but I analyzed it all from the key of F. Works both ways though the Vmaj7 is not something you see often in other styles of music! #DayTwo of #MusicEveryDay: My friend and mentor Richard "M0b1us" Doyle, Penn State English Professor and author of the extraordinary #DarwinsPharmacy, told me last time we spoke to consider treating my woes with a "#PerpetualStew" (or "hunter's stew"), which you just keep on the stove and add new ingredients to it every day until it matures into something you could never have planned, something that bears all of the history and subtlety of all the iterated soups that came before. It's an active (and delicious) meditation on change and repetition. While I haven't yet taken the leap to making my own *actual stew*, I'm treating this decision to hold myself accountable to a daily rehearsal schedule as a kind of *musical* perpetual stew... The #ChapmanStick is a perfect vehicle for taking me into #BeginnersMind, short circuiting my long-ingrained #AcousticGuitar habits and inviting a totally different composer from my inner pantheon to step forward and stretch a little. I would never write this kind of #bluesy #riff on the guitar, but between my wiggly right hand and my noob left hand, I find most of my #improvisation hovers around simple #ChordChanges and #Pentatonic scales, broken up by the occasional out-of-key flatted notes. Practice diary  (of a person who needs to practice more and better)

It’s hard to make time for playing the guitar everyday right now, but I try. I have so much to do at the moment, like school, family, birthdays, friends,... Sometimes I don’t know how to make time or I just come home, eat and sleep because I’m extremely tired.

When I finally sit down to practice, it’s not as structured as I want my practice to be. I don’t write practice schedules anymore, idk why, and I should definitely pick this up again because I lose so much time noodling around or playing old songs. Maybe I can start scheduling my practice time again next week (this means tomorrow)

With my guitar teacher I started to learn “Roman Sky” by a7x. I started learning this one a few months ago by myself but never finished it and I really love the song, that’s why I asked to play this in lessons. It’s kind of harder than I thought and I have to sit down tomorrow and on Tuesday to work on the chordchanges and the string skipping  because I always hit the wrong string...

Random story of the week:

I went to a job fair with my mom and this was all about engineering and mechatronics (which is really cool) and I’m not sure if I really want to do this my whole life, because I’d love to study music or especially (electric) guitar. My biggest goal is to study guitar at Berklee, but this is very unlikely to happen and I always thought that my parents wouldn’t allow me to study music but today they said they’d be completely fine with it, so it’s up to me now if I can do this or not, if I’ll work hard enough or not...
