Magician @christiancagigal and I did not collaborate on this piece.....or did we??? (said with a menacing, eyebrow raised inflection). A mutual friend introduced Christian and I in 2011 knowing full well that our art forms were kissing cousins. Christian is a mind-blowing masterful storytelling mentalist with a finessed sleight of hand and an enviable collection of creepy haunted props. I liked him immediately. I've since seen him perform many times and regard each experience as truly magical. But before I could witness his act in person, I Googled him, as one does. I watched just one of his older recorded bits on Youtube, went into my studio and made this. Magic Trick, assemblage, 2011 Nest series, 10" x 16" x 4" (Sold) You too can watch the video that inspired this piece by clicking the "Christian Cagigal Performance" tab in my Linktr.ee in my bio. And I highly recommend pursuing any opportunity to see his most current work. The I.B.M. convention opened the first day with a bang. The first of two days of stage contests began plus an opening night party that featured Fantasio and Storm Troopers from Star Wars. How often can you see those two things in the same sentence? I.B.M. International Presiden, Shawn Farquhar, was introduced with fanfare and with a local group of Storm Troopers for his processional. I remember in New Orleans, Louisiana when then International President Earl Christenberry had a Creole Jazz Band parade in his processional throwing bead to the registrants as if we were in a Mardi Gras parade. Shawn's parade was quite different.
Fantasio was honored at the evening show as we enjoyed a performance by a troupe of performers from Argentina who delighted the audience with their magic, mind-reading, manipulation and comedy ending with a hand shadow act. Another nice feature at I.B.M. conventions is the "Autograph Party" where the performers are all lined up sitting at a table and signing free posters that feature their photos. Lectures of the day included Boris Wild and Soma.
In the "Night Before" party, those who arrived early enjoyed a double feature of magic films: one by Kevin Spencer on his "Healing of Magic" program and the second with Christian Cagigal called, "Now And At The Hour" which was a documentary about his one man show. The well-attended ate night lecture was with Kozmo.

Join Magician Christian Cagigal as he weaves fairy tales, dark fables and strange happenings into an intimate and engaging evening fraught with wonder, mystery and imagination.
The beauty of Obscura is that it isn't obscured at all. Whereas other magicians go to elaborate lengths to misdirect the audience's attention, illusionist Christian Cagigal performs right under the unblinking eye of a video camera -- his wonder-working projected on a giant screen above him in real time. The heightened level of scrutiny brings a special intensity to this hybrid of dark fables and astonishing magic. Cagigal's ingenious and extremely polished show has amazed critics in Chicago ("He's the Pied Piper and we're the mice ... "), New Orleans ("He had us in the palm of his hand ... "), San Francisco ("Undeniably irresistible ... ") and many more cities. Be there as it hits Montreal and remember: The Devil is in the details ... under these conditions, where else could he be?

Keep pushing, keep moving, keep going in the constant face of failure.
My friend, and fellow San Francisco State alum, Christian Cagigal had the honor of giving the Alumni Speech at this year's SFSU Theatre Department Graduation Ceremony. It's a touching, funny and encouraging speech. I hope the 2013 Graduating Class took it to heart. I sure did.Â
christiancagigal: I first met Darren when he was 11 or 12 years old, I think I was 24, and we were both in BABES IN ARMS at 42nd Street Moon. My gf at the time was the lead in the show, and Darren essentially lived on the way to her place so, we began to give him rides home instead of his parents having to wait late at night to pick him up. Darren was a kind, warm, charming, and talented soul, even back then. It was fun to get to spend time with him on those post show commutes.
A few years later he was at Theater Rhino in a beautiful anthology show of short plays, all of them starring and directed by dear people from my burgeoning theater community, and written by Vadanak Ke. We were surprised to see each other again, and it was lovely to see that the same attributes he had as a kid were growing as he became a man.
It’s now, I think 18 years later(?) and it was A BLAST to reconnect with him again, and tell him to his face how I felt so effing proud and happy for him, marriage, family, career, all of it! And of course we had to lovingly take the piss out of each other as we BOTH had stories about the other we had both forgotten ;)
Best new Halloween memory ever!
Special thank you to M. Graham Smith and A.C.T. for inviting me to join in on the All Hallow’s fun this year with some magick ;)
