It’s In The Cards

Magic the Gathering might be the worlds oldest trading card game, but there’s a set of cards that predate them that we’re looking at this week.

TAROT

While starting off as (And still to this day played with as) a European deviation of Egyptian and Chinese playing cards, in the 1700s Cartomancers began to use Tarot cards in the art of divination, using cards of the major and minor Arcana to peer into the depths of the future and predict major life events.

This Week, your task is to create a magic card based on a tarot card of your choice. 

While you do have creative freedom on how you approach your design, be aware that I will be looking for cards that really represent the Tarot your card is based on. For example, if you make a kill spell based on Major Arcana 13 - Death just because it’s called “Death”,  I’ll know you didn’t do your research. I’ve got 3 Categories for you this week

Best Flavour - Whichever card most closely capture the spirit of it’s chosen tarot through flavour will win this category.

Best Mechanical Execution - If you want to focus more on mechanics than flavor, that’s fine. You’ll be aiming for this category.

Best use of Flip/Transformation/Split cards - want to try and show both sides of your chosen tarot? Go for it. This week’s contest is a lot more flavour-focused than what I usually run, but hopefully the week off has given you a nice rest before you dive into this Deep Divination of a contest.  Good Luck, and feel free to ask any questions you have about the contest. ~ @thatboonguy​

The music & characters & settings just all brEATHE the kind of aesthetics I’m into, plus also make me super nostalgic for other games. (Especially all the frickin paper mario references this game keeps under its sleeves)

Wanted to try reALLY playing with 3d layers for this. The camera moves a bit faster than I wanted but any sorta tweaks to make it slower while keeping the speed of what I made jus kinda screwed other parts up. ‘Least I know for the future hhAHA

Next up Tarot Review: The Hush Tarot by @jeremyhush. This is a very different deck with beautiful imagery. Slightly different size than a normal deck and can be harder to shuffle, but the artwork and symbolism used make it worth it. Animals and small creatures are used along with faerylike beings with a feeling of the past to each image. It’s In the Cards: Winners

Flavour: Chariot of Commitment//Crashed Chariot by @mardu-lesbianHard work, commitment, positively moving forwards. The chariot represents overcoming conflicts and constant movement to achieve success. This is represented brilliantly here by a powerfull vehicle with a flip condition that you probably dont want to trigger. If you do, we see the ugly side of The Chariot: Scattered thoughts, a loss of direction, and wasted potential. This is a fantastic card, and you should be proud of it.

Mechanics: The Fool’s Journey by @whuh-oh The Fool. Representative of new beginnings, inexperience, and beginners luck. This entry narrowly missed being the winner of the flavour category, but the more I looked at this entry, the more I fell in love with how it works mechanically. Would you sacrifice over half of your opening hand in order to ensure you have a certain card from the start? I also love that this card has flashback, so that once you’ve gained experience, you no longer need the fool, and can use it one last time before exiling it forever. Great Design.

Best use of DFC: Nine of Swords by @misterstingyjack Unlike many other cards in the deck, the Nine of Pentacles does not generally have a positive meaning in either orientation. It is a card of ill fortune, representing either Fear from withing when it is right side up, or Fear from outside forces when inverted. This has been captured well in this card, which uses randomness to capture the same essence as a tarot reading, and both sides are powerful effects that no-one would want. Great design.

And that’s a wrap! I’ll have the commentary for the rest of our entries up sometime next week (I promise, this time) and Ablezumi will be back on Sunday with a brand new contest. I looked at the top card of our contests and I’m feeling really good about this one.
