La nuit tombe sur les rives de la mer Morte. Des projecteurs sont braqués pour un spectacle qui se veut grandiose vers les falaises d’Ein Gedi, non loin des ruines de la forteresse de Massada, haut lieu de résistance du peuple juif. Il y a de la lumière et du son. Plus de 5 000 chrétiens d’une centaine de nations participent à la 40e fête annuelle des Tabernacles, parrainée par l’Ambassade chrétienne internationale de Jérusalem (Icej), une organisation de soutien à Israël qui appuie et finance la colonisation juive en Cisjordanie occupée.

Des groupes de musique évangéliste au show bien rodé se succèdent sur scène. Les délégations débarquent après souvent un long voyage. Elles sont un peu perdues. Certains pèlerins sentent le soufre. Dans l’après-midi, ils se sont trempés dans des bains de boue noire avant de se doucher à l’eau sulfureuse puis de flotter dans la mer de sel. Ils découvrent un univers disputé entre Israéliens et Palestiniens.

La station balnéaire d’Ein Gedi, un lieu cité dans le Cantique des Cantiques, est située dans le désert de Judée, en lisière de la Cisjordanie occupée pour les Palestiniens. «Nous avons fait 22 000 km et 23 heures de vol», dit Henri Waiwe, un Néo-Calédonien de 25 ans. «Israël est la terre donnée par Dieu à Abraham et ses descendants. La Bible dit que ceux qui viennent ici seront bénis. C’est cette bénédiction que je suis venu chercher. Jésus va revenir ici sur terre pour tous nous réunir. Nous cherchons l’unité et la paix.»

Henri Waiwe est chrétien sioniste, un mouvement protestant fondamentaliste pour qui la création de l’État hébreu en 1948 résulte des prophéties bibliques et prépare le retour du Christ. La «tribu» a des millions d’adeptes dont Mike Pence, le vice-président des États-Unis.

«Au cours des quarante dernières années, nous avons vu chaque année des milliers de chrétiens des nations proches et lointaines monter à Jérusalem pour la fête juive de Soukkot, dans les bons comme dans les mauvais moments», lance entre deux concerts le président de l’Icej, le docteur Jürgen Bühler. Il est aux anges. L’événement injecte quelque 20 millions de dollars dans l’économie israélienne, où le tourisme religieux est en pleine croissance.

Faciliter l’aliyah

L’Icej plaide pour le retour des Juifs dans leur nation. Elle a aidé, depuis sa fondation en 1980, plus de 150 000 personnes à faire leur aliyah et œuvre dans l’espace de l’ex-URSS mais aussi en France. «Ce voyage en Israël va changer votre destin. Je suis sûr que le roi David nous entend cette nuit dans ce désert de Judée», s’enthousiasme au micro Jürgen Bühler. Le spectacle est retransmis sur les chaînes évangéliques comme God TV.

C’est la pleine lune. Les visages des visiteurs sont extatiques. La joie intense. Des Congolais dansent la rumba, des Ivoiriens assurent l’ambiance. «Faites du bruit pour Jésus», lance un chanteur. Un prédicateur chinois fait vibrer la foule. L’Afrique et l’Asie forment le gros des bataillons. L’Amérique du Sud est également très présente avec une importante représentation brésilienne, le pays du président Jair Bolsonaro, élu avec le soutien des évangéliques.

Quelques jours plus tard, le séjour des chrétiens sionistes est marqué par une parade de soutien à Israël dans les rues du centre de Jérusalem. Ils défilent dans l’allégresse en rangs serrés. Des unités de l’armée israélienne ouvrent le cortège, fusil-mitrailleur en bandoulière. Les badauds se sont massés derrière des barrières et fraternisent. Les chrétiens sionistes évitent tout signe religieux ostentatoire - en dehors de l’étoile de David - et brandissent le drapeau bleu et blanc de l’État hébreu. «Je suis chrétienne et tous ces lieux bibliques me ramènent à ma foi. Israël doit savoir l’amour que nous lui portons. Son peuple a beaucoup souffert et a toujours été rejeté», assure Monica, une Sœur de Marie, un mouvement protestant allemand, la seule chrétienne à arborer une croix sur sa poitrine.

La reproduction d’une soucoupe volante est portée en triomphe. Elle représente l’engin déposé sur la Lune par une société israélienne en avril, mais qui s’est écrasé à l’atterrissage. «Israël est le peuple élu. Jésus est venu et les gens l’ont refusé. Il est pourtant amour. Israël est un pot qui brûle avec le conflit israélo-palestinien. C’est une société mélangée avec qui je veux partager», commente Ajosha Haenggi, un Suisse.

Dimension politique

Au-delà des discours religieux souvent confus, le rassemblement a une dimension politique qui dépasse le simple appui amical à l’État hébreu. Aux États-Unis, Donald Trump s’est aligné sur les positions de Benyamin Nétanyahou, le premier ministre au pouvoir depuis dix ans, non sans arrière-pensées. Il compte sur le soutien des évangéliques qui représentent environ 25 % du corps électoral.

Lors du scrutin présidentiel de 2016, il a obtenu environ 80 % des votes évangéliques blancs, et ses conseillers sont convaincus qu’un niveau similaire d’approbation sera nécessaire pour qu’il soit réélu l’année prochaine. Il en va de même au Brésil avec le président Jair Bolsonaro.

Donald Trump a transféré l’ambassade des États-Unis de Tel-Aviv à Jérusalem, une capitale non reconnue par les Nations unies, et ratifié l’annexion du plateau du Golan, un territoire pris à la Syrie durant la guerre des Six-Jours en 1967. Lors de la cérémonie d’inauguration de la nouvelle chancellerie en mai 2018, le président américain était représenté par son gendre, Jared Kushner, son émissaire au Proche-Orient, un proche de la mouvance évangélique.

Deux pasteurs, John Hagee et Robert Jeffress, avaient fait le déplacement pour bénir la nouvelle ambassade. Ils ont la particularité d’avoir tenu par le passé des propos aux relents antisémites. Fondateur de Christians United for Israel (Chrétiens unis pour Israël), devenue l’organisation-phare des sionistes chrétiens, John Hagee avait estimé qu’Adolf Hitler était l’instrument d’un «dessein supérieur», puisque la Shoah avait poussé les Juifs à se rassembler en Israël.

Robert Jeffress avait, en janvier 2017, prononcé le sermon de la messe marquant à Washington l’entrée de Donald Trump à la Maison-Blanche. Selon lui, la foi dans le judaïsme mènerait tout droit «en enfer», tout comme d’ailleurs la foi en l’islam ou dans l’hindouisme. «En s’entourant de radicaux évangélistes, Jared Kushner a organisé une cérémonie qui a tourné à la pitrerie hollywoodienne», se souvient un diplomate européen à la dent dure.

Bataille pour l’ambassade

Le jour du transfert, de violents affrontements entre Palestiniens et l’armée israélienne ont éclaté à la frontière de Gaza, faisant 59 morts palestiniens. Si elle n’a pas mis le feu au Proche-Orient, la délocalisation a, en revanche, paralysé la diplomatie américaine. L’Autorité palestinienne a depuis coupé les ponts avec Washington et réfute par avance le fameux plan de paix américain pour la région, dont la publication est sans cesse repoussée.

La bataille pour l’ambassade reste une victoire importante pour les sionistes chrétiens. Elle a été leur combat pendant des décennies. Beaucoup d’entre eux débattent actuellement de leurs prochaines priorités. Certains messianiques militent pour la prise de contrôle par Israël du mont du Temple de Jérusalem, l’esplanade des Mosquées pour les musulmans, le lieu saint le plus âprement controversé du Moyen-Orient géré par la Jordanie.

Le mouvement évangélique n’est toutefois pas monolithique. Dans un livre (Christian Zionism in America, NDLR) consacré à l’histoire du sionisme chrétien, Samuel Goldman, professeur de sciences politiques à l’Université George Washington, estime que «l’avenir du sionisme chrétien n’est probablement pas en Amérique mais dans des mouvements religieux qui émergent à travers l’Amérique latine, certaines parties de l’Afrique et l’Asie».

Le rassemblement des fêtes du Tabernacle est à l’image de cette évolution. Les participants américains étaient peu nombreux et souvent âgés. «Les jeunes évangéliques des États-Unis semblent avoir des opinions et des points de vue plus divers sur Israël et, en général, pas aussi intéressés par le sujet. Ce n’est pas autant une priorité pour beaucoup d’entre eux que pour les générations précédentes», note-t-il.

Tous ne sont pas convaincus que les prédictions apocalyptiques s’appuient sur des fondements géopolitiques. Pour les fondamentalistes messianiques, le jugement dernier pourra avoir lieu et le millenium s’accomplir lorsque les Juifs se convertiront et reconnaîtront en Jésus leur messie. En attendant la fin du monde, cette conviction laisse à penser à bon nombre d’Israéliens qu’ils sont aimés par ces alliés «pour de mauvaises raisons».
