An Introduction to Cybersecurity
I created this post for the Studyblr Masterpost Jam, check out the tag for more cool masterposts from folks in the studyblr community!
What is cybersecurity?
Cybersecurity is all about securing technology and processes - making sure that the software, hardware, and networks that run the world do exactly what they need to do and can't be abused by bad actors.
The CIA triad is a concept used to explain the three goals of cybersecurity. The pieces are:
Confidentiality: ensuring that information is kept secret, so it can only be viewed by the people who are allowed to do so. This involves encrypting data, requiring authentication before viewing data, and more.
Integrity: ensuring that information is trustworthy and cannot be tampered with. For example, this involves making sure that no one changes the contents of the file you're trying to download or intercepts your text messages.
Availability: ensuring that the services you need are there when you need them. Blocking every single person from accessing a piece of valuable information would be secure, but completely unusable, so we have to think about availability. This can also mean blocking DDoS attacks or fixing flaws in software that cause crashes or service issues.
What are some specializations within cybersecurity? What do cybersecurity professionals do?
incident response
digital forensics (often combined with incident response in the acronym DFIR)
reverse engineering
cryptography
governance/compliance/risk management
penetration testing/ethical hacking
vulnerability research/bug bounty
threat intelligence
cloud security
industrial/IoT security, often called Operational Technology (OT)
security engineering/writing code for cybersecurity tools (this is what I do!)
and more!
Where do cybersecurity professionals work?
I view the industry in three big chunks: vendors, everyday companies (for lack of a better term), and government. It's more complicated than that, but it helps.
Vendors make and sell security tools or services to other companies. Some examples are Crowdstrike, Cisco, Microsoft, Palo Alto, EY, etc. Vendors can be giant multinational corporations or small startups. Security tools can include software and hardware, while services can include consulting, technical support, or incident response or digital forensics services. Some companies are Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs), which means that they serve as the security team for many other (often small) businesses.
Everyday companies include everyone from giant companies like Coca-Cola to the mom and pop shop down the street. Every company is a tech company now, and someone has to be in charge of securing things. Some businesses will have their own internal security teams that respond to incidents. Many companies buy tools provided by vendors like the ones above, and someone has to manage them. Small companies with small tech departments might dump all cybersecurity responsibilities on the IT team (or outsource things to a MSSP), or larger ones may have a dedicated security staff.
Government cybersecurity work can involve a lot of things, from securing the local water supply to working for the big three letter agencies. In the U.S. at least, there are also a lot of government contractors, who are their own individual companies but the vast majority of what they do is for the government. MITRE is one example, and the federal research labs and some university-affiliated labs are an extension of this. Government work and military contractor work are where geopolitics and ethics come into play most clearly, so just… be mindful.
What do academics in cybersecurity research?
A wide variety of things! You can get a good idea by browsing the papers from the ACM's Computer and Communications Security Conference. Some of the big research areas that I'm aware of are:
cryptography & post-quantum cryptography
machine learning model security & alignment
formal proofs of a program & programming language security
security & privacy
security of network protocols
vulnerability research & developing new attack vectors
Cybersecurity seems niche at first, but it actually covers a huge range of topics all across technology and policy. It's vital to running the world today, and I'm obviously biased but I think it's a fascinating topic to learn about. I'll be posting a new cybersecurity masterpost each day this week as a part of the #StudyblrMasterpostJam, so keep an eye out for tomorrow's post! In the meantime, check out the tag and see what other folks are posting about :D

Emails flooded Y/N's inbox, all from Captain Singh, breathing down her neck about getting paperwork done and micromanaging how she responds to emails. She had been making small mistakes, typos on files, forgetting to sign document or dropping a piece of evidence and it shattered on the floor. No matter how careful she has been a mistake on her end pops up racking up anxious feelings.
Harry and Cisco have not helped her in anyway in S.T.A.R labs critiquing how she is not moving fast enough in the field, that her take downs are sloppy and causes too much damages. That they are tired of repairing her suit. The constant nagging coming from all fronts was beginning to cause a storm cloud of doubt to loom over her head. She felt uneasy and the stress and pressure she put on herself to do better and move more efficiently , all the while taking the criticism and swallowing the sinking feeling that settled in her stomach.
Her computer pinged with a new notification, pulling her from her thoughts, that Captain wanted to see her in his office. She closed her eyes and count to ten before she responded that she would be right down and closed her laptop grabbing it and heading down the stairs to his office. Joe, Barry and Singh were in the office grim looks on her face. “Shut the door, Y/L/N.” Y/N felt bile rising in her throat as the door clicked shut.
By the time the meeting met its end, Y/N had to utilize all her will power to not cry. She made a beeline for the elevator, “Y/N, Y/N wait!” Barry's voice boomed in the bullpen. She slowly turned and saw Barry feigning that he was catching up his breath, holding up his phone with the notification a fire was happening, “Duty calls.”
In a blink of the eye they were at the fire of the high rise builder, hero attire on. “I'll take care of the fire, you clear the building to make sure everyone gets out safe.” Y/N nods and Barry speeds into the top floor of the building and Y/N began her descent down the floors, clearing each floor there was a scream on the third floor and she made her way there. A crying child was curled up in the corner, with speed she grabbed the girl and as she turned the whole floor caved in. The girl screamed.
Y/N held the girl close and whispered soothing words. Closing her eyes and taking a deep breath she took a running leap to get reach the doorway. She sped through the floors making sure there was no one left into the building before she got out of the building the young girls face tucked into her shoulder. A weeping older woman takes a look at the young meta with the girl in her arms and makes a dash toward her. “My baby!” She held her arms open as Y/N whispered to the girl causing the child to lift her head and squeal with joy and leap into her mother's open arms. The mother cradles her child's head rocking her soothing her sobs. The mom meets Y/N's eyes, “Thank you so much!”
Y/N gave her a small smile, “She'll need to be checked on by the paramedic.” She squeezes the mom's shoulder as she walks away and reaches her friend. “Everyone is out.” Barry's eyes widened and begin patting at her only then realizing her suit was on fire. “Can't wait to hear about that when we get back to the labs.” She mutters as Barry zooms them into the cortex of the lab.
Team Flash, begin talking stats about their current rescue mission. Y/N took off her mask, getting lost in her thoughts. As she takers off her jacket Cisco's voice boomed in the cortex, “Seriously, Y/N, can you go out, and maybe not destroy your suit.”
Y/N grips the chair tightly as she closes her eyes. Through clenched teeth, “Get right on that, Cisco.”
“I mean these materials are not cheap you need to be more careful.” Cisco keeps prodding on and on. Y/N kept counting to keep herself calm.
The pit in her stomach began grow as Harry walks in. “Who was in the lab last?”
Y/N groaned, “I was.”
Harry's steps approached her, “All the tools that I spent an hour and half sterilizing were on the floor, would you happen to know anything about that?”
Tears began to form and Y/N's resolve began to shrink opening her eyes to meet his, rage bubbling over, “Yes, Harry, I was running late and was so frustrated I decided to pull a you and throw everything on the floor.”
“That's cold, Y/N,” Cisco muttered as he began to clean the suit on her jacket.
“I was being sarcastic, you ass!” Cisco and the teams head snapped, “Harry, it was an accident, I'm sorry. I never intend to make you grumpier than you already are. But hey Barry got to watch me get suspended today because as much as I fuck up at being a hero, I can barely do my day job right.” Harry took a step back as Y/N took a step forward. She was about to explode and took pause, “You know, with the way everyone gets a pass for the mistakes they make, I apparently make so many that just causes everyone more problems and more work. I think I'll take myself out of the equation.” She looks at Cisco, “Keep your suit,” her gaze moves to Barry, “You can have the lab to yourself,” She finally meets Harry's intense gaze with his furrowed brows, “You'll never have to worry about me causing you any more problems, Doc.”
She makes her way out of the cortex elbowing Harry, and Cisco out of the way and left the labs tears streaming down her face. Leaving Team Flash taken aback by the sudden outburst.
Not wanting to go home she made her way over to jitters. Y/N placed her order and waited for her drink to be made. She wiped her tears as she thought about how useless she feels. She grabbed her drink and sat at one of the high-top tables and let her thoughts her.
A tap on the table caused her to jump where her eyes met familiar blue ones shadowed under a cap. “Hey, Princess. I had a feeling you would be here.” He took the seat across from her interlacing his hands together, “What's going on with you?”
“Was I not clear? I was suspended from work, and when I'm not getting my flaws pointed out at work, my shortcomings are getting pointed out by you and Cisco. I can take a hint, the team is better off without me.” She shrugged and took a sip of her drink.
Harry's furrowed his brows, “How long have you been feeling this way?”
Y/N shrugged, “It comes and goes but that feeling of usefulness has been elevated this past week. I make too many mistakes, I'm human its going to happen I work hard to not make them again, and I feel like if I lash out or defend myself, I’m not taking criticism well. If I keep making mistakes I'm not growing, I just feel stuck and that I can't say anything without some form of backlash.” Her eyes began to water, as the words are pouring out of her. “I am not perfect, and I feel like I’m not even wanted anywhere or by anyone.” Y/N realized how much she was dumping all her feelings onto him “I'm sorry. I know you have gone through worst things and that you're probably only here because the team made you. Its just the stress builds up and I explode.” She stood from her seat and tried to muster up a small smile, “I’ll catch you later, Harry.”
Harry grabbed her arm, “Sit back down,” he looked up at her and muttered, “Please.” With a reluctant sigh she sat back down. “Princess, listen to me very carefully,” Tears streaked down her cheeks, and she swiped them away. Harry rubbed his hand over his mouth averting her gaze for a moment to figure the right words. “I’m not the best at bringing comfort, I am not the best in dealing with conflicts. Jessie is the first person to call me out on this and holding me accountable,” He placed his hands over hers on the table, “I do know one thing, you are something special.” She met his gaze, his eyes holding a level of intensity. “You work hard, and you are the Teams beacon of light when all hope seems lost. We would be lost without you and probably would have fallen apart if it wasn’t for your optimism and kindness. Even when we don’t deserve.”
Y/N cast her eyes down to their hands and Harry gave Her’s a comforting squeeze. “If that is how everyone feels, no one ever treats me like I’m valuable. Not at work, not anywhere. Harry, you have been the hardest on me,” she sniffled, “All I have wanted these past few weeks was a friend to tell me that it was going to be okay.”
Y/N heard the chair move and suddenly she felt a hand under her chin and lifted her head up to meet his blue eyes sadness flooded his gaze. “Princess, I’m so sorry.” He pulled her into a tight embrace. She took a moment to register that she was in his arms before she wrapped her arms around his waist and let the emotions of the past of the few weeks release and sobbed into his shoulder.
Harry leaned his head against hers rubbing soothing circles on her back. “I know I’m not the greatest friend. But I need to you know that I care for you extremely, Y/N.” Y/N’s sobs were slowly turning into soft hiccups. “I promise I will do better to be there when you need me.” He softly pushes her away and rubs the tears from her cheeks and leaves his hands resting on her cheeks, “Just tell me what you need.”
Y/N nod and without thinking twice she reached up and gave him a quick peck on the cheek, “Thank you, Harrison.”
His cheeks flushed and gave her an awkward smile, “Anytime, Princess.”

The Role of CCNP in Multi-Cloud Networking
We live in a time where everything is connected—our phones, laptops, TVs, watches, even our refrigerators. But have you ever wondered how all this connection actually works? Behind the scenes, there are large computer networks that make this possible. Now, take it one step further and imagine companies using not just one but many cloud services—like Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Microsoft Azure—all at the same time. This is called multi-cloud networking. And to manage this kind of advanced setup, skilled professionals are needed. That’s where CCNP comes in.
Let’s break this down in a very simple way so that even a school student can understand it.
What Is Multi-Cloud Networking?
Imagine you’re at a school event. You have food coming from one stall, water from another, and sweets from a third. Now, imagine someone needs to manage everything—make sure food is hot, water is cool, and sweets arrive on time. That manager is like a multi-cloud network engineer. Instead of food stalls, though, they're managing cloud services.
So, multi-cloud networking means using different cloud platforms to store data, run apps, or provide services—and making sure all these platforms work together without any confusion or delay.
So, Where Does CCNP Fit In?
CCNP, which stands for Cisco Certified Network Professional, teaches you how to build, manage, and protect networks at a professional level. If CCNA is the beginner level, CCNP is the next big step.
When we say someone has completed CCNP training, it means they’ve learned advanced networking skills—skills that are super important for multi-cloud setups. Whether it’s connecting a company’s private network to cloud services or making sure all their apps work smoothly between AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, a CCNP-certified person can do it.
Why Is CCNP Important for Multi-Cloud?
Here are a few simple reasons why CCNP plays a big role in this new world of multi-cloud networking:
Connecting Different Platforms: Each cloud service is like a different language. CCNP helps you understand how to make them talk to each other.
Security and Safety: In multi-cloud networks, data moves in many directions. CCNP-certified professionals learn how to keep that data safe.
Speed and Performance: If apps run slowly, users get frustrated. CCNP training teaches you how to make networks fast and efficient.
Troubleshooting Problems: When something breaks in a multi-cloud system, it can be tricky to fix. With CCNP skills, you’ll know how to find the issue and solve it quickly.
What You Learn in CCNP That Helps in Multi-Cloud
Let’s look at some topics covered in CCNP certification that directly help with multi-cloud work:
Routing and Switching: This means directing traffic between different networks smoothly, which is needed in a multi-cloud setup.
Network Automation: You learn how to make systems work automatically, which is super helpful when managing multiple clouds.
Security: You’re trained to spot and stop threats, even if they come from different cloud platforms.
Virtual Networking: Since cloud networks are often virtual (not physical wires and cables), CCNP teaches you how to work with them too.
Can I Learn CCNP Online?
Yes, you can! Thanks to digital learning, you can take a CCNP online class from anywhere—even your home. You don’t need to travel or sit in a classroom. Just a good internet connection and the will to learn is enough.
An online class is perfect for students or working professionals who want to upgrade their skills in their free time. It also helps you learn at your own speed. You can pause, repeat, or review topics anytime.
What Happens After You Get Certified?
Once you finish your CCNP certification, you’ll find many doors open for you. Especially in companies that use multiple cloud platforms, your skills will be in high demand. You could work in roles like:
Cloud Network Engineer
Network Security Analyst
IT Infrastructure Manager
Data Center Specialist
And the best part? These roles come with good pay and long-term career growth.
Where Can I Learn CCNP?
You can take CCNP training from many places, but it's important to choose a center that gives you hands-on practice and teaches in simple language. One such place is Network Rhinos, which is known for making difficult topics easy to understand. Whether you’re learning online or in-person, the focus should always be on real-world skills, not just theory.
Final Thoughts
The world is moving fast toward cloud-based technology, and multi-cloud setups are becoming the new normal. But with more clouds come more challenges. That’s why companies are looking for smart, trained professionals who can handle the job.
CCNP training prepares you for exactly that. Whether you're just starting your career or want to move to the next level, CCNP gives you the skills to stay relevant and in demand.
With options like a CCNP online class, you don’t even have to leave your house to become an expert. And once you complete your CCNP certification, you're not just learning about networks—you’re becoming someone who can shape the future of cloud technology.
So yes, if you’re thinking about CCNP in a world that’s quickly moving to the cloud, the answer is simple: go for it.

Beach City
by Jaquira Diaz
-
We talked about Miami Beach like it belonged to us, convinced that the tourists who came down to swim in our ocean and dance in our nightclubs were fucking up our city. We were seventeen, eighteen, nineteen-year-old hoodlums, our hair in cornrows, too-tight ponytails, too much hairspray, dark brown lip liner, noses and belly buttons pierced, door-knocker earrings, jailhouse ankle tattoos. We didn’t have time for boys from Hollywood or North Miami, busters who drove their hoopties with the windows down because they didn’t have A/C, calling out to us trying to get phone numbers as we crossed Washington Avenue or Lincoln Road, our chancletas slapping the sidewalk.
What did they know about surfing during hurricane winds, fucking on lifeguard stands, breathing under water? What did they know about millions of stray cats pissing in the sand dunes, entire flocks of rogue seagulls dropping shit torpedoes, about refugees and kilos of cocaine and bodies washing up on our shores?
We were the ones who knew what it meant to belong here, to be made whole during full moon drum circles, dancing, drinking, smoking it up with our homeboys. We knew what it meant to bloody our knuckles here, to break teeth here, to live and breathe these streets day in, day out, the glow of the neon hotel signs on the waterfront, the salt and sweat of this beach city.
*
One night we parked Brown’s Mustang behind the skating rink on Collins, hoofed it to the beach. We took our bottles of Olde English and Mad Dog 20/20, the six of us passing a blunt and listening to 2Pac’s “Hit Em Up” blaring from somebody’s radio, and every time they sang, “Grab your Glocks when you see 2Pac,” the boys grabbed their dicks, and we all laughed our asses off. Brown danced, stripping off his clothes while we cheered him on, me and A.J. keeling over, slapping our knees. Flaca, China, and Cisco climbed to the top of the lifeguard stand, singing, “Go Brown! Go Brown!” When he was down to just boxers, Brown gave up, and we booed him, threw our balled-up socks and sneakers at him.
Me and A.J. were out behind the lifeguard stand, sand between our toes, feeling for each other in the dark. We ran around laughing and laughing, and I took his hand, danced circles around him in slow motion.
I don’t remember when A.J. first told me he loved me, or even if he told me, but I knew. I felt it every time he came around, every time our thighs touched while sitting together on China’s couch, or when the six of us had to squeeze into Brown’s Mustang and I sat sideways on his lap, my lip brushing against his ear, his arms around my waist. Or when we stayed up all night talking even though he had to get up early for school the next morning—something I didn’t have to worry about since I was a high school dropout. Or on nights when the liquor and the weed made my head spin, the heat and the high coming down on me all at once, and only A.J. around to keep me from falling.
Down by the shore, Brown was so fucked up he dropped to his knees, then lay down sideways on the sand. Later, we would all carry him back to his car. Flaca would drive us to her place a few blocks away. We would all stagger up the stairs to her little studio, put Brown to sleep in the bathtub, and smoke Newports on the balcony. He would wake up with the munchies an hour later. “You got any cheese?” he’d call out from the bathroom. Cisco would grab an entire pack of Kraft Singles from Flaca’s fridge, and the two of us would toss them into the tub, slice by slice, while Brown tried to catch them in his mouth.
But before all that, the six of us dancing and running around on the beach, China chugging down Mad Dog, Flaca and Cisco kissing on the steps of the lifeguard stand, and A.J. looking at me under the moonlight, a cloud of smoke all around us, I wrapped my arms around him and said, “Don’t let me go.”
We were laughing, hitting the blunt.
We were the faraway waves breaking, the music and the ocean and the heat rising rising rising, like a fever.
We were bodies made of smoke and water.

Eddie wakes up, seemingly thirty years in the future with a false life the negative speed force set up for him. Even as he tries to piece things together, the negative speed force keeps whispering about how he needs to be its avatar and it can help him get his life back.
Eddie wasn't sure exactly what he'd been expecting.  His family had gone to church, mostly just because it was what his father wanted to do. like everything, it was a political choice, for appearances. Eddie'd never really bothered to pay attention to things, or think too deeply about death, or eternity, or any of that.  It hadn't been a priority, and then when it had, he simply hadn't had the time, between gunshot and darkness. Angels and clouds, maybe. or some infinite emptiness, stretching out. or maybe nothing at all.
He wasn't expecting a hospital bed, with stiff white sheets. Or a doctor calling him a different name.
"Eddie," he said, correcting the person in the white coat who'd just called him something his ringing ears hadn't quite parsed. Mason? Morgan? Malcolm? Something with too many Ms and not enough Es. "Thawne."
"You've had a brain trauma," the doctor said, in a tone too sweet to be real. "It's no wonder you're confused."
"I'm not confused. I'm ..." he stopped. Saying that he was dead wasn't going to help his case."
You're not dead, something that was not his own said in the back of his head, and Eddie jumped, feeling his chest scream at the movement. Eddie. Let me help you.
"Who are you?" he asked, realizing too late he'd spoken too soon.
"I'm Dr. Rosso," the man said, moving closer. He was older, maybe sixty, maybe sixty five, Eddie would have guessed.  His hair was silvering. Eddie didn't recognize him, but then again, why would he?
You should, said the voice. It sounded like his father. It sounded like Eobard. It sounded like himself.. If they had not taken everything from you, you'd have met him. A version of him, anyways.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Uh. It's just my name," the man said, his teeth flashing. "How are you feeling, aside from the confusion. Any pain?"
"Yeah," Eddie said. "I ... gunshot..."
"Gunshot? No. The chart says..." Dr. Russo started flipping through. Eddie didn't care. whoever's name was on the chart, that wasn't him. That didn't matter. What mattered was that he was alive. And if he was alive, then so was....
That's right. Through you, the rest of the Thawnes, and all the evil they create. We can stop them. We can get back. Let me help you.
Eddie had sat through exactly one lord of the rings extended edition marathon with Iris and Cisco while they waited for Barry to wake up. once had been more than enough to make alerts, as red as the lightning behind his eyes when he squeezed them shut, start blaring.
"Sir?" the doctor said, leaning over him. Eddie caught a glimpse of the chart, jargon and scrawled handwriting and there at the top by the name they'd been calling him, the date. May 25th, 2052.  You’ll never get home without me.

This function enables customers to make and obtain calls rapidly from the Microsoft Teams app due to their latest cell numbers. With this integration, firms can make the most of their current smartphone service carrier although leveraging the efficient collaboration equipment that Microsoft Teams gives you.
The Role of SBCs in Direct Routing
Session Border Controllers play a essential function in facilitating direct routing for Microsoft Teams. They act as a bridge among the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and the Microsoft 365 cloud environment, making certain trustworthy communication and interoperability. SBCs manage call signaling and media handling at the same time offering very important gains like encryption, name admission management, and Quality of Service (QoS).
Benefits of Using an SBC for Direct Routing Enhanced Security: SBCs supply physically powerful security gains that protect against threats reminiscent of Denial-of-Service attacks and eavesdropping. Interoperability: They make sure seamless integration among the various communication platforms, permitting groups to secure existing telephony investments. Call Quality Management: SBCs visual display unit name first-class in precise-time, enabling for instant modifications to improve consumer feel. From My Hard Drive: H.R. Wells Lives!!!
Tumblr media
When I wrote my Flash series, I was in the enviable position of being tied to the TV show, but not beholden to it. My series was set in an alternate timeline in which Barry never went back in time at the end of Season 2 to create Flashpoint. Which meant that I didn’t have to hew to the show’s continuity. One thing this meant was that I could use the character of H.R. Wells, who’d been killed in Season 3 on the show in a sequence of events that never happened in my own personal “Barryverse.” I liked H.R., so this seemed pretty cool to me, and I wrote a couple of scenes with him in Green Arrow’s Perfect Shot. And then the showrunners asked me not to use H.R. I’m not sure why, but they made so few demands of me and let me get away with so much that it seemed pointless to fight this very minor request. I pulled H.R. from the book, with the exception of a quick flashback. Here is an early scene from Green Arrow’s Perfect Shot as originally written, with H.R. front and center. I think H.R.’s reflection/comment at the end is some very fine superhero universe writing! “What’s up, buttercups?” a new voice said just then. Coming through the doorway was H.R. Wells, the Earth 19 version of Harrison Wells, who’d been with the team for a couple of years now. As always, he clutched in one hand a large mug of coffee, this one with the words PAPA’S TREASURE emblazoned on it. Earth 19 had no coffee; H.R. was sort of addicted. “Help me move her,” Barry said. After a split second’s hesitation, H.R. put down his mug on the control board and helped Barry lift and carry Madame Xanadu into the medical bay, then lay her gently on a bed. She still wasn’t asleep, but she was much more calm. “Is it Mardi Gras already?” H.R. asked, taking in Madame Xanadu’s brocaded skirt and brightly patterned head scarf. “No,” Barry told him as they went back into the Cortex. “She just…has flair.” “Flamboyance!” H.R. crowed, snatching up his mug and taking a drink. “I appreciate it. We could use some more color around here.” “The super-hero costumes aren’t enough?” Iris asked drily. Before H.R. could respond, Caitlin interjected. “I’m going to go set her up on a monitor and run some more tests,” she said, and vanished into the medical bay. “Where’s Cisco?” Barry asked Iris. He couldn’t forget that Madame Xanadu had — while talking and breathing — said that she herself was already dead. Sounded like delusion, yes, but in Barry’s world it could also be time travel, dimension-hopping, or just plain weird science. And when it came to weird science, Cisco was his first call. “Downstairs,” Iris said. “Still…communing.” Her face clouded over as she said it. Barry knew why. “None of it is about us,” he told her, taking her hands. “None of it is your fault—” “Mis amigos!” Cisco strolled into the Cortex. His hair, long and lustrous, was tied back in a ponytail, a look that made his face seem more mature somehow. “How goes it?” “You tell us,” Barry replied. “What’s up in TV land?” A year or so ago, Cisco had stumbled upon a shocking and existentially fraught secret — there was another timeline, nearly identical to their own. It wasn’t a parallel Earth — it was an entire timeline with a multiverse of its own, a slightly twisted mirror image of their reality, “an identical twin with a different haircut,” as Joe had once described it. It was so big a discovery that they’d had to invent some new terminology. After much debate, Cisco (of course) came up with “transmultiversal version,” which they often just shortened to “TV” for convenience’s sake. There were as many similarities between their world and the TV world as there were differences. In each reality, there’d been an invasion of super-Nazis from Earth-X that had been turned back. In each reality, Barry and Iris had wed, as had their friends Oliver and Felicity. They’d fought similar villains, though at different times and in different ways. But the biggest difference was that TV-Barry’s creation and negation of Flashpoint had had a ripple effect. Cisco’s brother Dante was dead “over there.” Caitlin had a Killer Frost split personality. H.R. had sacrificed his life to save Iris. And so on. Every few months, the two Ciscos used their vibe powers to make contact with each other and catch each other up on happenings in the different timelines. It was so far the only way they’d discovered to communicate between the two realities. “Any news on my doppelgänger?” H.R. asked hopefully. Cisco’s good mood melted away. “Sorry, buddy. Nothing. Still dead.” H.R. nodded thoughtfully and ambled away from the Cortex, muttering, “Sometimes it doesn’t stick,” as he went. A pall hung over the Cortex. The TV H.R.’s death hit Iris particularly hard, since it had been to protect her. Barry kept reminding her that what happened in the other timeline didn’t impact them here in theirs…and that the opposite was true. Nothing she had done here had caused the other H.R.’s death. The signposts are pointing the way: The Factory of the Future, where information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) converge, is straight ahead and the road leading to it is a superhighway of technology, innovation, and advanced capabilities. This four-part series examines the definition of the Factory of the Future, common characteristics, benefits, and how to get started. Defining the Factory of the Future The Factory of the Future has an evolving definition, even different names. Some call it Smart Manufacturing, Industry 4.0 or the Digital Enterprise. While the terms vary, some elements are always in common. The Factory of the Future is the product of fast-changing disruptive technologies hitting manufacturing like a cyclone.  Information technology and operational technology are both seeing drastic innovations. The convergence of these two forces is creating a paradigm shift. Manufacturing is experiencing the fourth industrial revolution. We are already seeing results: According to a report from SCM World, 40% of manufacturers they surveyed say that smart manufacturing along with its foundational technology—the Internet of Things—is within reach, and it’s the right time to invest. Huffington Post reports that early adopters who have at least partially implemented smart manufacturing initiatives have documented measurable results: 82% reported increased efficiency 49% reported fewer product defects 45% reported customer satisfaction gains The impact promises to grow and be even more substantial as manufacturers and their suppliers deploy and integrate more technologies across the entire manufacturing landscape. Greater speed, value, innovation, and closer alignment with demanding customers will be the new normal. Analysts often cite the year 2020 as the next milestone moment. Some point to 2030 or 2050 as being the thresholds. Find the Latest Internet-of-Things News, Trends and Best Practices No matter which date you want to target, it is clear that substantial change is coming and coming fast. That future looks promising.  Perhaps manufacturing will at last be able to leave behind the public impressions of labor-intensive, dirty and dangerous worksites, and bury once and for all the memories of plant closings and shipping jobs to low-cost countries, leaving communities devastated. Manufacturing will be new again. We are on the way. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, nearly 900,000 new manufacturing jobs have been created since February 2010. Disruptive technologies have been appearing on the horizon for several quarters now, starting to build the momentum and define the characteristics of the Factory of the Future, including: Social and mobile capabilities were some of the first next-generation trends that became must-have capabilities very quickly. Product configuration tools, integrated computer-assisted design (CAD) systems and late-stage assembly helped manufactures meet demands for mass customization. Robotics changed operational technology dramatically, just as shop-floor automation revolutionized workflows and production cycles. Big data started conversations about factories becoming predictive, leveraging analytics and creating strategies for identifying customer expectations. Cloud computing fueled the imagination further, making storage of immense pools of data possible. 3D printing launched a hype cycle that was—and still is—staggering. The Internet of Things far surpasses all of these disruptive technologies. The potential impact of the IoT is truly staggering and hard to grasp. While projections vary greatly, they are always described in trillions. McKinsey & Co. anticipates the global economic value to be $11 trillion, and Cisco predicts a $19 trillion opportunity. This isn’t an absolute list, nor is there just one checklist of IT and OT tools that must be deployed to be considered a Factory of the Future. Some manufacturers will need more; some will be able to leverage two or three disruptive technologies to create a strong market position. There is o...
