so I wanted to riff off of @alexanderlightweight's response to the Alec/Bow/Quiver/summoning meta post by @ralfstrashcan that I reblogged recently, but also I didn't want it to get lost in an increasingly long reblog chain, so I'm gonna quote and start over here:

if we really want to take it a step further. we can even talk about how izzy has specially made weapons that have to be super tricky to use which means weapons ability

but that's just my brain. which made that one scene where alec goes back to the institute make no sense, to retrieve his bow because literally every other time he doesn't need to (they just wanted to give clace the training moment and set up the whole hodge thing)

1: I also think Alec's 'have to go get a bow' is just an excuse, but he's using it to a) get away from Jace behaving incomprehensibly & Clary being So Very Clary, AND b) to cover their tracks now that he's realized just HOW comprehensively his siblings are going to go off the rails in the next day or so. (And on a narrative level I really like the scene with Hodge so I'm glad it exists. 😅)

2: I headcanon that part of the reason Alec (& to a lesser extent but still noticeably so, Izzy) can get away with pushing so many Clave/Nephilim boundaries without actually getting deruned despite their parents being on Thin Fucking Ice™️ with well, everyone, is that they have inherited both Family Traits and that's valuable enough (especially after all the losses during and after the Uprising) that the Clave really really doesn't want to get rid of them.

(Similarly, there's some hope that Jace and/or his expected children might show signs of the Wayland traits coming to life again as they've died out otherwise. Obviously that goes a bit sideways once they finally pick up on How Very Herondale he is, but luckily he's Herondale so that's still a benefit.)

Truebloods: very literally truth-tellers. Variations on their skills include the ability to recognize lies, off the charts charisma when they are invoking what they believe to be the truth, and an ability to make the most awkward truths palatable to audiences that normally wouldn't want to engage with them. They were traditionally the guardians of the Soul Sword whenever it left the City of Bones, but that honor faded away over the years as the Council with the Consul/Inquisitor as heads centralized power in their own hands.

Izzy can be seen doing this during her trial, because even when her personal behavior has included digs & microaggressions against Downworlders, she believes that they as a people can and should do better and her speech clearly works in-universe because of that resonance of truth.

(She even occasionally manages the sincere/heart-felt clunky dialogue that works despite being clunky that Alec's so good at, and poor Jace doesn't, despite his best attempts, because for all he's a Lightwood in every other way that matters, he's not actually part Trueblood.)

Maryse has several hints of Alec's same blunt (inexplicably successful) sincerity once she lets herself stop hiding behind Politics & Expectations. When she's upset with Izzy about spending time with the Seelie in s1, she has a line that always felt very self-recriminating to me; (I'm paraphrasing here since I'm too lazy to pull up the script or episode): 'never trust a people who can't lie, they'll find more imaginative ways to stab you in the back'. She knows this about the Seelie because it's what she's always done.

(Alec's shock at his parents being in the Circle can't be because it's against their politics as they've never really tried to behave better. Perhaps it's because it never occurred to him that they could lie that well. Especially his mother, since he has a much better relationship with her than Robert.)

This means that Maryse buying into Valentine's rhetoric was invaluable to him, because she could back him up and help make sure people would fall for it, because she was a Trueblood. Equally, when she turns, that is part of why the Clave lets them back in. Her vow to now toe the party line is completely believable, because she promised on her children... who are also Truebloods.

This also means that their bloodline is one that would not always be popular since they can call out power when it's behaving badly; thus the apparent decline of Trueblood standing in the way that the show refuses to ever really acknowledge it in the present day timeline, and instead talks about Lightwood honor.

(But countered in the way The Clave doesn't move directly against Alec Lightwood, HotI, despite gay and living with a Downworlder, despite how much clear disdain he has for so many of them and their policies. They aren't willing to risk what a Trueblood could do if pushed into active rebellion.)

Lightwoods have a much more palatable martial gift. Their affinity for the adamas in their weapons means they can bond with them, sometimes strongly enough to summon them, manipulate them in the field, adapt them and rune them and enhance them in ways most Shadowhunters can't. (We never see anyone doing anything resembling Alec runing his arrows in s1 after all. What if most of them can't?)

As shown by Izzy in s3 as Weapon's Master, in Alec's ability to beat his parabatai (the supposed best fighter of a generation) when they're sparring with weapons even if he loses once they get to hand-to-hand, Izzy's unique skill with a whip, Alec fighting with everything he gets his hands on, from seraph blades to his signature bow to actual arrows for stabbing. (As seen in everything in ralf's original meta post and delightful fic.)

There's even something in the fact that Izzy was interested in joining the Iron Sisters (which while prestigious also involves even more sacrifice from a people who have to sacrifice a lot already and are thus vital enough that they let Cleophas join despite her past because they needed her) and yet Izzy stayed active duty -- and presumably eventually marriageable.

(I frequently wonder if part of why she chose to make herself as unpalatable as possible for a traditional/political match was a lingering bit of awareness that that was what The Clave most wanted from her, regardless of who she wanted to be.)

ALSO! There has to be a reason that Robert Lightwood was valuable enough to keep even when they got rid of Maryse, a reason the show reiterates Lightwood honor over and over again, a reason he & Maryse got to be co-Heads of an Institute (even if the general fanon that they were more constrained than most Proper Heads does fit what little we see), and we never actually see Robert fighting or sparring, but we are repeatedly told that his children are the best of the best.

But it's seldom mentioned as a compliment, is it? More like an expectation. They're Lightwoods, they have to be the best with their weapons, or what is the point of them? It's just another weight added to Alec's so-called crown, another expectation Izzy has to both flaunt and fight against every day so she can have at least a little bit of herself left to hold onto.

(The one thing Jace is good at, the one bit of the monster his father built that helps; he's as good with a blade as a Lightwood. It's the only thing that gives him hope for redemption, the only thing that gives him enough conviction to ask Alec to be his parabatai and protect his soul from himself.)

Back On My Next Generation Shenanigans

Angeline "Andi" Jocelyn Herondale: The first Clary and Jace child. She has curly blond hair, freckles, and green eyes. She's very charming, but she's also been going through this life long crisis that the Shadowhunter's are in a never ending battle with the demons that will never end through the generations, only ending when the demons win; she's a bit of a natural pessimist. She thinks a lot about society and such, looking into the mundane forms of government, hoping it would be better then the Shadowhunter ones and was just like these all kind of suck, society sucks, I should make up my own form of government. She fights demons with knives, like a strange amount of knives; she'll hold like seven at once and slice away, she'll throw them and then pull some more out of nowhere. Thanks to this existential dread for her and the future generations thing, she ends up coming up with theories on how to just kill all demons forever, doing all kinds of research and experiments. With this, things get kind of messy. She also is kind of thinking about starting a coup, to overthrow the Shadowhunter form of government and implant a better one, which also gets kind of messy. Like I said, she's very charming, so she forms a whole group of people. Honestly, since she's so ambitious and willing to do many things to fulfil those ambitions, I think she might end up as a sort of antagonist, which should give an interesting dynamic with her family and friends. I can also see Shadowhunter's being like 'is it really surprising considering her grandfather' even tho she has a completely different set of ideals.

Jasper Robert Herondale: The second clace child. He has curly red hair, freckles, and black eyes. Much to surely everyone's surprise, he's a very quiet person, and to nobody's surprise, he would rather die then share even a hint of his true feelings. He gives big gentle giant vibes; man's just over here looming in the corner freaking people out, but the people who know him are just like 'nah, he's fine, he's just happy to be here'. He's the only one that got the tall genes, standing tall over all his other short siblings. He fights demons with a sledgehammer. When he was little he got kidnapped, but instead of pulling a Mina, he actually got traumatized. It was a mundane that kidnapped him, which is why it took a while to find him because nobody thought it was just some random mundane that took him. The mundane was going to sell him and some other kids to some rich buyer, but when the Shadowhunter's stormed the area to get Jasper they freaked out and started killing the kids as some sort of last minute cover up, not wanting to be caught with ties to the market cause then they'll just be assassinated in prison. But his parents got to Jasper before they could kill him, now the last survivor. This resulted in Jasper having a bit of a savior complex, feeling like he needs to save everyone since he feels like all those kids died because of him and he couldn't do anything about it, him, a Shadowhunter in training. It didn't help that he was naturally protective to begin with, now it was just twice as intense. This complex should lead to interesting thing when Andi goes all rouge.

Samuel Lucian Herondale: The third clace child. He has curly blond hair, freckles, and green eyes. He's the artist of his siblings, often drawing made up, disturbing looking creatures, along with other strange looking things. He's got this ever growing, hard to understand imagination, and it makes him come across as a bit strange and awkward, but he does have a lot of cool comics he's drawn but never published, though he wants to. The way he ends up fighting demons is sort of unusual; turns out, some of those creepy looking creatures he draws he can make come to life to fight alongside him, his parents angel blood coming through. Though he does have a weapon as well, that being a seraph blade. Despite it being angel power, and despite everyone literally knowing his parents whole Angel deal, Shadowhunter's are still side eyeing him for how demonic his creatures look. They're literally pulling out his family tree like 'oh wow Tessa the warlock is your great great great great grandma I bet that's those demon powers' or whatever. He's basically gaslit into thinking he's a demon, despite his parents being like 'it's probably just our angel powers but even if it's demon powers that's okay too'. But Samuel was already insecure, and this just fed into it. But ironically enough, he can't hate this power, making friends with the little creatures he makes; he just hates himself. I think out of all the Herondale kids he understands the most of why Andi went rouge.

Marigold "Mae" Celina Herondale: The youngest clace child. She has curly red hair, freckles, and gold eyes; kinda looks fox like now that I think about it. She's very quick witted, can talk on and on for hours and never run out of quips. Super competitive as well; whatever she gets into she will work herself to the bone to be the best. Although when she gets competitive, it just feels fun to her really, something to get passionate about, but then most people end up taking it wrong and get all heated about it or feel overwhelmed or something of that like, and she doesn't know how to correct it, especially in the moment. She fights demons with dual machete's. Mae often struggles with that connecting to people thing, but then there was the time when she actually connected with a demon more than a person. It was some random demon that could talk, and they were fighting but they both got sort of competitive about it and one thing led to another and now she and this demon are sort of besties. This led to her having a bit of a crisis of her befriending this demon so easily when she can't do the same with people, wondering what that makes her and if she's even worthy of being a Shadowhunter. Then there's the whole sneaking around to see her demon friend and worrying about when it came down to it what side would she be on. Honestly, she's more worried about what Andi will do to her and her demon friend then the Clave.

Noelle Rebecca Lightwood: Simon and Isabelle's first child. She has black hair and brown eyes. She's very much a poised, calm person. She's an introvert to the point where people think she's rude, but really she just can't handle socializing for very long, making her words seem clipped in dismissive, which she always ends up feeling guilty about. But she has a bunch of random, niche interests, that if you get her going on one of those she'll talk your ear off. She fights demons with a bow and arrow; Alec taught her. She's a bit of a glass child really, as her two siblings prove to be a bit of a handful, and she's seen as the 'easy to handle one'. Simon and Isabelle of course don't do this on purpose, they just have their hands full with the other two, and Noelle ends up festering in this. This leads to her physically unable to ask for help, not knowing how or if it's even allowed. She has all these insecurities and feelings she desperately needs help sorting out, and other people are always like 'wow your so put together and independent', making her feel this expectation and driving her into further isolation so people don't know she's not put together or think she's too needy.

George Maxwell Lightwood: The middle sizzy child, who definitely thought his name was inspired by 'George Lucas' before they told him about George Lovelace. He has brown hair and blue eyes; Will's eyes live on once again. He tends to feel things very deeply, doesn't know how to take things causally. Everything makes him feel these intense emotions, and people tell him he needs to 'calm down', or even think he's faking it, but that's just how he feels. He's also big into movies; he remembers every detail of every movie he's ever seen, researching the background of the movies as well. He has a multitude of screenplays he has written that he thinks aren't good enough to go on to become an actual movie. But his ability to feel things deeply assist him in writing these screenplays, able to insert such feeling in his characters and the presentation of situations. He fights demons with a seraph blade. George secretly doesn't really want to be a Shadowhunter; he wants to go off and make movies and such. But he feels guilty about it, what with feeling like if he takes irf he's betraying all of humanity. And there's also the stigma of his dad, Simon, being originally a mundane. People would say things like it was in his 'blood' to be a mundane, and that attitude would also go to his siblings, so he keeps quiet.

Lorelei Maryse Lightwood: The last sizzy child. She has brown hair and dark brown gold eyes. She's very much a free spirit, always running off and getting into shit, always disappearing and coming back after some strange misadventure. She just could never find it in herself to stay in one place. Girl will literally be missing for like a week and show up with jar of blood or whatever and is like 'I can explain'. She's a drummer, a very good one, hoping from band to band because she always seems to get involved in the shittiest bands who she insists 'have potential' but then they always end up falling through. That's how she gets into a lot of her misadventures really; she gives people the benefit of the doubt way too much, she looks for and finds people's best selves, which while sweet, can get her involved with bad people. She fights demons with this spiky baseball bat. Like I said, this trusting nature of hers gets her into trouble, but the biggest trouble she's gotten in is when she accidently got involved with some small that worships the demons and think they should take over the world. Now she knows way too much about this strange, ridiculously over funded cult, and is trying very hard to stop them while not telling anyone she has ties to such a treason. Worse yet, she ends up falling in love with someone in this organization, which makes things all the more complicated.

Eleanor Jia Penhallow: Helen and Aline's first child. She has black hair, freckles, and blue eyes. This was a planned adoption, a Shadowhunter orphan whose parents died fighting demons, now in need of a home. She's a bit of an actress, being able to disguise as different people as well as characters of her own creation. She really throws herself into these roles, using it to find out information and such, a bit of a spy in her own right really, pulling information for the Clave and for her allies. She's quick and able to read situations and people quickly, adding to her ability to act in difficult situations. This also leads her to know more then she probably wants to know, even of her friends, which can make her feel like she's being intrusive even when she's just looking at them. She fights demons with a double edged blade. A lot of the time she has trouble pulling herself out of said roles, sometimes feeling like she doesn't have a true personality and that even when she's not in a role and she supposedly 'herself' that it's not really her, that she's still acting. This leads to a bit of an identity complex, not really sure who she really is at a 'default', if the way she is is just another role or if it's natural, because she doesn't know.

Edmund Liam Penhallow: Heline's next child. He has curly black hair and brown eyes. This was more of an accidental adoption, a Shadowhunter abused by his parents that ran away to the Los Angeles institute at the age of only 9, of whom Helen and Aline get very attached to. He's very cautious and observant. He likes research; he knows every bit of Shadowhunter history and Mundane history, he knows how to fight with weapons he doesn't even wield, he learns about random things that one would think would never come up in a situation but when it does he's ready to info dump much to everyone's bafflement; guy's just a bundle of knowledge about basically everything. He fights demons with this hammer and nail thing, both using the hammer to hit the demons and for hitting the nails at a long distance at the demons. His parents were very much not careful with him. They put runes on him too young, they threw him in front of demons too young saying that was his training, and so on. The final straw that caused him to run away was when they had somehow got it in their head that he had the potential to talk to ghosts. His parents had heard of the Herondale's connection to ghosts, and one time they saw Edmund muttering to himself so they were like 'clearly he has the potential to talk to ghosts as well'. Edmund tried to correct this, as he very much could not talk to ghosts, but they just threw him into some sort of morgue for 'training', refusing to let him out until he made some sort of connection to a ghost. He tried to lie, say he did, but his parents saw through the lie every time. Two weeks passed before he gave into hunger and began eating the only thing edible in that room; the dead bodies. Another week passed, and at that point he thought his parents weren't ever going to let him out, but then they did. It was then that he ran away, the taste of dead people never truly leaving his mouth. Honestly, the way he saw it, his parents jumped the gun a lot on him, doing things to him without properly understanding, being so reckless with him. So this sort of fed into his obsessive 'I must know every detail before doing anything' thing he does, as he doesn't want to be like them, and he thinks this will prevent people from being hurt. I also think the whole eating dead people thing definitely led to an eating disorder of some kind, unable to eat a lot of foods without tasting dead people.

Andrew "Andres" Blackthorn Rosales: Eldest kiearktina child, born from Cristina and Mark. He has curly black hair and golden eyes. He adores the forest life, wants to explore every part of it. Though, the forest didn't naturally like him back at first, as he didn't have that natural connection to it like the Fae. But he learned the ways of the forest, able to navigate it like no one else, and now the forest likes him back. He wants to travel the world and explore all sorts of different terrains, map them out, understand them all. The guy has crazy survivalist skills he's both learned about and discovered through trial and error, and he can and will go on rants about them at any given moment. He fights demons with this mysterious sword the forest gave him as a gift that definitely won't lead to any sort of plot line don't worry about it. The Fae disapprove of his entire existence, looking at him in a sort of 'what is he even doing here'. He's only partially Fae, and they don't consider that to be enough, even though Andres feels more connected to the Fae then he does with Shadowhunter's. They don't even really consider him to be Kieran's son, despite the many, many times Kieran has made it very clear he is. They pick on him and do cruel tricks on him a lot, nothing to permanently damage him physically, since he does have that amount of protection from Kieran's name, but it does take it's toll on him mentally. His parents know what's going on, but he never tells him who did it.

Juniper "Junie" Kingson Rosales: Youngest kiearktina child, born from Cristina and Kieran. She has curly blue hair and silver eyes. She's very much attracted to the city life, lowkey hating the forest life, not vibing in their cottage core lifestyle; very much the opposite of her brother. Girl is super into architecture, learns about the different styles from all over the world, she's obsessed. She has doodles of her own architecture, and she wants to make them a reality someday. She fights demons with a three balled flail. She isn't considered to be a true heir, as Cristina is considered a consort. But that's good for her because she didn't want to be the heir anyway; life in the fOrESt? Forever? No thank you. Give her that industrialization. But there does need to be an heir, and Kieran very much does not want to have a child with some other Fae woman just to have one, so as time wears on it's looking like an illegitimate heir is looking better than no heir. That would skip over her brother and to her, because even though Kieran of course sees them both equally as his children, she has Kieran's blood in her, so the Fae would consider her first. Of course, Kieran has siblings it would go to first, but even the slight possibility of it ever going to her puts her on edge. She feels it in the other Fae's eyes, that they hate her, but they'll take her as a last resort. She feels it in the way they talk to her, like they want to hurt her so bad, but don't just in case she does end up ruling over them. As such, being around most Fae make her uncomfortable, and would rather be with the Shadowhunter's.

Benjamin "Benji" Livia Blackthorn: The only blackstairs child; I'd imagine after raising all of his siblings, Julian might opt to spend all his energy into one kid rather then several. He has curly brown hair, freckles, and blue green eyes. He has a love for making weapons, not just weapons that already exist, but ones he thinks up himself. He'll experiment with new ideas and even fashion to better suit the individual person. He's very passionate about it, leading him to come off as very intense. He'll go out and actively seek out demons to test his prototype weapons on alone. It's a very dangerous thing that Emma and Julian have desperately tried to stop, but Benji is incredibly stubborn and tenacious, a consequence of having Emma and Julian's genes. But when he's fighting with other people, he's less likely to just test something he hasn't before, as he doesn't want to put other people at risk, so when he fights demons with other people he switches between a multitude of weapons he's tested before that were successful. People are very wary of Benji's weapons because they're breaking tradition; he's mixing metals that have never been mixed. People call it a disgrace to the Angel's gifts, saying he's basically spitting in the Angel's face; so as you can imagine, Benji isn't very popular. There was this one time when he was younger that he was told some kids were going to meet up, so he met up with them without telling his parents because he didn't think it would take that long, only for to be locked in a closet in their house for like a day before Emma and Julian found him. The kid wasn't trying to kill him, the kid was planning to let him out after a few days, but he didn't tell Benji that. It was a very traumatizing event, and he became rather claustrophobic and suspicious of people who are nice to him after that.

Now. Reasons reasons reasons. Where to begin.

I took my time thinking about this question bc there are quite a few downworlders I have an affinity to. But the showdown where it was REALLY hard to pick one or the other was the battle of the warlocks…

Tessa or Magnus.

On the one hand, I love Tessa So much (wrote a piece on why you can find here hehe) and I truly think she is a timeless character (well before she became literally timeless ie. immortal) and her influence throughout the shadowhunter world is iconic, relevant and enduring.

However… her choices and inner narrative became a bit clumsy dealt with and a bit inconsistent unlike Magnus’s, as the shadowhunter novels went on. Of course, characters are allowed to change, grow, develop at any age, but her character felt slightly manipulated in the writing? All for the sake of peddling the plot. Not to get TOO into the whole herongraystairs touchy topic but I do think as I’ve grown up and done over a handful of rereads I do spot the slight manipulation that started then, which kind of set a precedence in her character throughout. I adore Jem but he as well was felt a bit clumsily. Topic for another time.

Meanwhile Magnus, while through his own self discoveries and through his own immortalities feels more cleaner in plot. He’s necessary, vibrant, witty and is that character that you ALWAYS look forward to reading. He is That character that just lights up a room and you wait with baited breath on what he’s going to say next. His air of lightness that he brings into every interaction makes you be able to read and listen to him all day long. With long promises made of laughter, sage advice, experience, history and adventure.

And because of this, when he is being serious, his words strike you when you least expect it and leave you stunned.

His bisexuality was handled wonderfully, and was truly one of the first stories I think our generation read where the sexual identity wasn’t about coming out but already at the stage of acceptance and fun loving. He remains respectful and doesn’t want Alec to rush out of the closet but rather does the best thing- inspire Alec to be the best version of himself in life which is finite. That’s the best thing a partner can really do for you.

However he isn’t a Mary Sue bc in every series he stars in the reader sees his vulnerabilities in pure daylight. And also has a plot line that challenges his Yodha immortal dogmas. Will being one weakness of his in TID, Camille and how she mistreated him and being alone in a very sad world. I don’t think these topics were explored nearly as well with Tessa.

And of course, his relationship and development with Alec is my top 3 relationships in all the shadowhunter world. It felt natural, wonderful, sizzling, exciting and steadfast. Didn’t feel too young or naive like I sometimes feel when reading Clace, but new enough to feel like the honeymoon will never end. And I think in part it’s because of Magnus bringing out the best in people, and how Alec chose him. Of all the people Magnus helps out, he actually doesn’t really ask much in return. But for once Alec did a double take on him and let Magnus take the reins of where their relationship will lead them. With great readership payoff 🥹💍

Don't you just love it when you read about Clace as side characters and they're just being a cute couple?

I've been reading TDA, The Tales from Shadowhunters Academy and the extras and just enjoying seeing Clace from the other characters pov, just them being "Jace's expression softened looking Clary" or "Clary and Jace are weirdly good together" etc, "Jace sleeping on Clary's lap" or "I've never seen anyone else in love like them (....)" or "Jace and Clary can always be persuaded to go together" or when Jace says "where Clary go I go" in TFTSA

I'm paraphrasing obviously cuz i can't remember the exact quotes but yeah 💖💖💖

And I've also noticed how they're actually quite a playful couple--outside of their own books, cuz when we're reading from Clary's and Jace's perspectives, they seem quite serious sometimes since we're reading their thoughts basically

Yes!!! I totally do!! I mean, I love TMI of course, but my kids suffered a LOT on those books, so reading about Clace from different characters' perspective on other books it's so refreshing! I love it 🤩🥰

Like how they notice the way Clary touches Jace or how Jace looks at Clary, the way some people is even jealous of their relationship or think they would never fit with someone else the way Jace and Clary do, how in love they are, I'm all here for it!!! 🤩🤩💕

And yes! The playful part 😂😂 I agree, they seem a lot more serious with each other on their books. I love their dynamic in CoB because they got more into each other nerves in that book 😂 But I can't blame them, I mean, CoA and most of CoG was pure hell for them. CoFA wasn't much better. CoLS wasn't really Jace and CoHF (my favorite btw) they were a little more playful in that one. Point is, they were facing some serious problems in TMI, I understand Cassie didn't portrayed them more playful with each other on those books 🫠 So I'm so happy to see them in the other books, happy and confident in their relationship 🥰🥺 I mean, it’s also canon that they are playful with each other even during sexy times 😂😏🔥

although the tsc books are a source of comfort for me since i’ve been 13, i’ve really been able to see the flaws in cc’s writing over the years.

one thing that i feel like she could have expanded on was how their education works. i know she mentioned how hodge taught the nyc kids geometry in coa, and in lady midnight the LA kids need to do “clave testing” to see if they are up to standard. however, i think it’s just odd that clave testing was never brought up in tmi. do jace, izzy, and clary even have homework? from my understanding, after hodge they didn’t even have a tutor, so how were they learning?

something else that bothered me was that new york is hub for people, so i would presume quite a few shadowhunters lived there. it’s just unrealistic to me that no shadowhunter other than the main characters seemed to be training/getting educated at the institute.

lastly, i know you’ve touched on this a bit but i just feel like it is so unrealistic that clary never ever struggled with abandoning her old, mundane life at school for the shadowhunter world. i feel like cc could have fleshed out her character so much more if she added clary’s thoughts about struggling with completely changing the direction of her life. there’s a brief mention in cohf where she’s like “how did i even get here. i thought my life would be normal, i’d go to art school,” and her only explanation to jace as to why she chose this new life is because it brought her the people she loves. as a 16 year old, clary should be able to have complex thoughts about how she has abandoned everything she knew. i feel like showing her struggle would have given cc the opportunity to expand on clary’s backstory and the people she was once close to (other than simon, jocelyn, and luke). maybe throw in a scene of her running into someone she knew at school? i don’t know. i feel like she did a much better job at showing this struggle in simon’s independent story.

bonus: i enjoy clace under the suspension of disbelief, however, what do they even have in common other than being into each other. clary likes art, manga, and anime. jace likes… weapons, books (what kind?), and classical music?? literally what do they talk about after the main conflict is over? jace literally seems to know nothing about mundane culture and i feel like that should be important when dating someone who grew up as a mundane. cc could have included scenes about jace feeling insecure that he didn’t fully understand clary’s world but i guess that would have portrayed their relationship as strained for an actual reason and not just because one of them is possessed

Admittedly there are great many things Clare could've expanded upon. They really have no real standards for education, no educational system to ensure that the Shadowhunters are reasonably educated to do their jobs and not just die. No failsafe to ensure the Shadowhunters are reasonably trained in order to upkeep the peace, the law, and slay demons. I guess part of the learning is field work, but why they are allowed to patrol on their own? Is there a training period where a tutor/a teacher accompanies the younger hunters? Hodge let Jace handle Clary on her own and he wasn't even what Shadowhunters consider adult.

It could be argued that the lack of Shadowhunters in New York, especially in the New York Institute, is because of their waining numbers and the fact that many in the city seem to live somewhere else other than the Institute that is habitated mainly by travelling Shadowhunters and the heads of the Institute (and their families). But New York is such a large city that even the Conclave being like dozen or so people seem unrealistic. What especially seems unrealistic, as you said, that there is no other young Shadowhunters getting their education, and the biggest reason I would attribute this to is the lack of world-building because City of Bones, in its infancy and thus excluding later additions and revision, didn't even do the bare minimun, nor is the educational system ever brought up or explained in later books either.

When it comes to Clary, her life seems to only begin when the story begins. Only things she recalls back on is Jocelyn, Luke, and Simon—the people that still remain in her life and unchanged. There is no random boys or girls she went to school or art classes with, nothing but the sole isolation that even to the extent that Jocelyn tried to protect Clary still seems incredibly unlikely. She never thinks back on her life and reminisce things she lost or had to leave behind when she enters the Shadow World. I agree Simon's character is better with this because he had other friends and "girlfriends" and a mundane family—all sort of a by-product of his existence so it would be weird if none of that was addresses. Clary's character was created to leave that mundane existence (or never having truly belonged to it to begin with) so Clare didn't bother to write Clary having any meaningful existence with the outside world similar to Simon.

Jace falls in love with Clary for no reason, and Clary falls in love with Jace because Jace is handsome. There is no substance ever to their relationship, and even though in QoAAD they play chess all unbothered and cool, it's so hollow. Jace (or any other Nephilim for the fact, as a baseline) knows things about mundane culture that Clare herself values—art, literature, poetry, and classical music. Hence the innumerable art references that serve nothing. It's weird to me that the relationship the Nephilim have developed to some aspects to the mundane culture is never really explained in depth because at the same time they refuse many other aspects of it, but have nothing of their own to substitute any of it.

I don't remember where or which character said that the Nephilim aren't artists and their society doesn't really courage to create art (though it doesn't really discourage it either since Clary, Jocelyn, Julian, Jace, or Jem are not looked down upon for their skills in art and music). There are many aspects so off and lacking and inconsistent in the Nephilim society, but it's really always coming down to how little Clare cared to create the world instead of using it as a fantastical backdrop to a hollow romance.

The Wicked Powers Book 1: Heir To The Lands Forword;

Alright, considering books usually start with a forward, and I am hereby making my own ideal imagined version of TWP, I have decided to start each book with a forword too.

Well, hi everyone. I have been working on drafts for this for like, forever. This is a project I've been really wanting to do for a while now.

I'm one of the Shadowhunter Chronicles OG fans as I picked up the Dutch City Of Bones translation not long after it came out. I've been here before the movie and everything, I even was one of the first admins on the Dutch Shadowhunters wiki and made like, the first few character pages before I quit because of my personal life demanding me to do so.

So I'm making this project with nothing but love for the franchise in my heart.

It's just that there are the occasional things I cannot look away from, precisely because I'm a long-time fan of Cassie and now some of her old fanfic work like the entire Draco trilogy.

Like the fact almost every big, romantic male love interest being clearly inspired by either Draco or Harry and many of their love interests/heroine of the story clearly being inspired by Hermione or Ginny. And I can definitely see the self-insert allegations happening even in her portrayal of Ginny.

Which, on the topic of Dru and the way she got portrayed to be 'mature for her age', etc because she has curves, to be low-key fetishizing and sexualizing a character who was thirteen at the time. The fact Dane even gets killed for it should mean it's fucking wrong but the way her love interests were already set up and set up to be physically older then her is sending alarm bell after the other off- trying to introduce Faerie time shennanigans to twist this into NOT resembling grooming or ending up with shady age gaps is just problematic.

If you have to introduce various twists and turns to make a ship NOT seem icky, then it's a bad ship to begin with. This is why there are people who still don't like Clace because the numerous of twists and turns to not make it seem incest-y (and Jace is technically still her adopted brother thanks to Valentine), just makes for a poor ship.

I'm definitely trying to steer away from that throughout my version of TWP, though for the sake of interesting drama and actually making a good stance on this subject; this will be a topic throughout the entirety of my version of TWP and I will not settle for a solution in chapter one.

As I stated in earlier conception posts, I do want to do foreign cultures justice as whilst Cassandra Clare does know more about cultures then the average American thanks to her childhood, she does has share the American habit of not trying to do cultures she's unfamiliar with justice.

I have tried to ask for help in regards for a Turkish character, but despite making a post and reblogging it like twice in an attempt to get the word out there, I have received zero response so I just had to wing the last name by taking a Turkish last name that's comprised out of two words from a name site. I hope that's fine.

With all of this in mind, I hope you will enjoy my version of TWP!

I NEED HELP on how to like Clace AND Jace 😭😭😭 like, I like Clary but I can't tolerate Jace at all, I literally hate every moment he has in the books and the show (tell me if he even cared ONCE in tmi for anyone else except Clary and himself if we don't count that one time he went to Magnus after malec's break up) and I just can't bring myself to like him 😭😭 Dom's terrible acting in the show and Clace having zero chemistry didn't help either And I went and read fanfics of the people who actually like him, and I liked that version of Jace, but it was NOT canon Jace! They're in nothing alike but appearance 😭 like they literally made a new Jace in their fics but expect me to like him in canon? Then why don't you try and write him as he IS if he's that likable?!?! And I can't even say that because all my mutuals just post stuffs like "if you don't like Clace unfollow me I'm done with people hating on them" or like "Jace is a victim of abuse why don't you understand this" and I really don't want to get into an argument with then but just... He WAS a victim but that doesn't change how he acted during tmi... Ah sorry I just needed to tell someone this 😭😭

OK FIRST OF ALL - as long as you don’t spend a lot of time posting about how much you hate Jace and what an awful character he is etc. etc, we’re good, anon. I only have an issue with people who focus more on the things they hate than the things they love, and you don’t seem like that kind of person.

Ok now onto the main issue - have you tried reading the post-tmi books? Like, tftsa, lbotw, and tda? I’ve seen a lot of people say that they liked post-tmi Jace more than tmi Jace, which kinda makes sense since tmi was one of the lowest points in Jace’s life and he wasn’t his best self during it. It helps to remember that for most of tmi, Jace believed that “to love is to destroy”, that he couldn’t love anyone without risking ‘destroying’ them. He cares by NOT caring, by not being openly affectionate or loving towards them. It’s a paradox, I know. But after tmi, after he’s unlearnt everything by tftsa, he really shines. (Obligatory fuck Valentine.)

We don’t talk about show!clace 🤫

He did care tho. See what I wrote above, but also, there’s so many times when he does care about people other than himself and Clary. The first time we see Jace lose his composure and be vulnerable is when Alec gets injured in tmi. He literally follows Alec around like a puppy everytime he thinks Alec is mad at him lol. He fed his own blood to Simon on CoA when Simon was on the brink of death. Yeah, saving someone’s life is common human decency but he literally admits that he would’ve given up his own life if it meant saving Simon???

The main difference between those fanfics and canon Jace, I think, is that they show more of Jace’s vulnerable, soft side than what we see in tmi. Also, most of tmi is from Clary’s POV, and since Jace is usually closed off around her… yeah. Speaking of which! Also read the tmi extras from Jace’s POV! I really liked the one with Clace’s first kiss from Jace’s POV. (There’s a line in there about how Clary makes him blush, which was really sweet lol).

Also, sometimes people who are victims of abuse can be really defensive and prickly. Think of cats, for example. A cat who has been mistreated and abused would be more likely to hiss and scratch at humans than one who isn’t, right? Some people are the same. 🤷‍♀️

And finally, if you still find yourself disliking Jace, then don’t sweat over it lol. It’s just what it is. Sometimes some characters just don’t vibe with you, and that’s fine 😇

OKAY OKAY i know people are allowed their own opinions. It's fine if you don't like The Mortal Instruments. But i just wanted you guys to know this before you talk trash about TMI because it does not deserve all that backlash

I've mentioned this before in another post, but the first thing that comes to people's minds when they hear The Mortal Instruments is "the book series with the incest" or "you're my sister, my blood blah blah" all that stuff. I just wanted you guys to know TMI is SO MUCH MORE than that.

I know, you guys were EXTREMELY turned off when you read *that* scene in City of Glass. And yes, thinking about it gives me nightmares, but just because of several scenes of them making out when they were "siblings" doesn't mean that you can let that define the entire series.

Okay, forget City of Ashes and City of Glass and think about the other 4 books where they were not "siblings" for a while.

The moral or, i wouldn't really say moral, just point i guess, of TMI is how far you'll go for the people you love.

Specifically, i'm talking about Clary. Clary risked her life so many times in the series for Jace. She let herself go through so much just to save the people she loved. Like the time she joined her evil brother and sort-of-possesed-jace, with the only communication she had was a magic faerie ring, to find out their plans and also at the same time, risking getting caught communicating. Which did happen and her brother literally sexually assaulted her. And also stopped 2 WARS and also stopped her own father and brother. Also, Clace's love story is so different and so extremely epic. And also, the way that Clary is a badass who won't let anyone get in her way.

THIS ONE IT'S ON MY TOP CLACE FANFICS

It's so good!!! It's well written, the plost it's good and overall I really liked it

There's funny moments, lots of sad moments too, angst, fluff, sexy times. Sometimes you are going to want to slap Jace, sometimes Clary, sometimes Jonathan and another character that actually gets slaped

I really liked Jace and Clary's relationship and how they fall in love with each other. I'm not even kidding, I have read this fic like five times and I loved it every single time

I want to clarify that I'm not going to rate the fics, I just want to share my thoughts and the stories with you, in case you are interested in reading them. And also I want to keep a record of my reaction to some of the fanfics that I read and to promote some of the stories that I came across that I think deserve more recognition.

Ok imma be honest, this chapter moved me to tears and not the sad sobbing but the more inspiring kind. This chapter means the world.

She had told them her dreams were about ducks – since there were the only equally horrible thing she could think of.

Uncle Magnus had given her an odd look then, as if he knew she was bullshitting them. But he hadn’t said anything.

Max loved the shadow markets. Lexi thought they were very cool too.

Rafael loved his father’s office – which was weird. There was nothing to do in that room other than ponder about shadow world problems. Besides, the place still weirdly smelled like the tangerine perfume Anjali wore, even though the girl had left New York almost a year ago.

David loved the New York Institute – especially the library.

Gigi of course loved the dining halls.

Dining halls, kitchens, food trucks, vending machines - if a place had food with it, Gigi loved it.

It's so amazing how they all have their favorite places...(same David same)

“You’re supposed to pour the syrup on the pancakes not into your mouth,” Lexi chuckled as she sat down next to her.

“It ends up in my mouth anyway,” Gigi shrugged.

“His parents fell in love in Rome when they were in Rome,” Gigi pointed out even though Lexi already knew. “I think it’s actually romantic.”

“And didn’t your uncle do necromancy?” Max said biting into a chicken wing.

“Sorry, Chouchou!” Lexi winced. “I, uh, sensed a mosquitoe on your leg.”

“Girl, your angel powers are weird as fuck,” Max laughed.

“I don’t know,” the girl shrugged and threw her a wink. “I wouldn’t put anything past Lexi.”

Lexi looked at Gigi. She was one more compliment away from screaming.

But Gigi of course knew her struggle and therefore quickly stuffed a bread roll into Lexi’s mouth.

There were rumours about David – and how Daddy had an affair. Lexi was yet to find those asshats and shove a witch light down their throats.

“Or maybe it’s because you don’t need rumours be interesting,” David pointed out.

Max turned around, looking surprised at that. His cheeks turned purple. Lexi didn’t know why he was surprised. David only ever spoke fondly of Max.

“Oh. Oh! I did hear something a long time ago!” Gigi said suddenly. “Olly, is it true you were conceived at the beach?”

“Georgia, you can’t just ask people where they were conceived!” David sounded horrified.

“Oh my god,” Selena looked horrified. “That’s not true! It must have been about Max!”

“Y’all I am adopted!” Max was shaking with laughter and then stopped. “Although our dads could have definitely had sex in hell. I wouldn’t put it past them.”

Then they had of course continued to discuss that cursed topic until Rafael had threatened to tell the Consul about it.

“Sexual orientation and gender expression are two different things,” she explained now, remember what Uncle Magnus had taught them. “Sexual orientation refers to who I am sexually and romantically attracted to. Gender expression is how I want to express my gender identity. Those two are not connected. Just because a woman wears feminine clothes it doesn’t mean she is straight. Just because a man embraces femininity, it doesn’t make him gay either. Does that make sense?”

“Ohhh,” the girl nodded. “Yes, it does. Thank you!”

“What I wear does not reflect who I like. It reflects who I am and what I like to wear,” Lexi explained. “And regardless of my sexuality, I like pretty things.”

“This doesn’t change anything. I hope you know that,” he told her. “I mean I have to change the pronouns in my shovel talk. But that’s not a big deal.”
