@fluffbruary Day 12
Jace liked watching Clary sketch.
She always got this adorable furrow between her eyebrows when she concentrated. She always stuck her tongue out from the corner of her mouth as she tried to get a particularly tricky part. Her movements were so certain, so perfect, so graceful. There was always this one red curl that never stayed in her hastily done ponytail and hung tantalizingly down by her ear that she was too focused and busy to brush back.
She was always incredible, always bright, always incandescent, but never more so than when she was doing something she loved.
“Uncle Jace!” Max called loudly, ruining the introspective mood. He held up and shook the wooden sword in his hand - one of the pair Jace and Clary had spent days painstakingly making for their nephews. “Come and help me!”
Jace smiled ruefully. Romance was hard with kids around, which was why Alec and Magnus had dropped them at the Institute, declaring they were off for a romantic get away which included rarely found gems such as peace and quiet and no levitating children and no explosions.
Fortunately, Max hadn’t started his anti-gravity antics yet, because Clary would kill Jace when he started climbing to follow. He would probably start soon though, seeing as he’d clearly gotten bored of the colouring books and was restlessly walking around, horns bumping into everything.
Rafe looked up from where he watching and helping Clary paint. “Can I go too, Tía Clary?” He asked softly.
Clary reached out to ruffle his hair. “’Course, kiddo,” she said in the tender voice she saved for the children whom she wanted to protect: Emma. Julian. The other Blackthorns. And now their nephews. “I’ll save your painting so you can finish it later, okay?”
Rafe nodded vigorously, before snapping to his feet and rushing over as Jace corrected Max’s grip on the practice sword. “Me too, Uncle Jace!”
Jace chuckled. “No rush, Rafe. Grab your sword and come.” He walked them through some simple exercises and maneuvers he thought they’d be able to do – the same ones he’d done with his younger brother so long ago.
“Gah!” Max growled, swinging his sword wildly. “I’m a Shadowhunter! I’ll kill all the demins!”
Jace grinned. “That’s my boy.”
Rafael was much smoother in his movements – which made sense. He was a Shadowhunter. He had a natural instinct with weapons, and Alec had told him he’d spied on other Nephilim and trained by himself. Jace admired that sort of independence and stubbornness. It reminded him of himself, how much ever Magnus would hate that comparison.
“Uncle Jace, when can we see Tavvy again?” Rafe asked suddenly. He left his sword down next to his overnight bag and came over. Max tossed his randomly and skipped towards them.
“Max, keep your sword properly,” Jace chided gently. “If you get hurt, how are you going to be a little nuisance? Besides, it could get damaged.”
“Not a nuisance,” Max slurred petulantly, but he went and retrieved his sword anyway.
“Alec or I’ll talk to Helen and Julian,” Jace promised his other nephew in response to his question. “I’m sure you’ll get to see him soon.”
He cast his mind back and tried to remember. Right. They’d had only one playdate with the youngest Blackthorn after the whole Cohort-fake death-giants fiasco, and Magnus and Alec’s wedding. Max and Rafael were probably still worried about how Tavvy was holding up after everything his family had gone through. Jace knew he worried about Emma and Julian plenty, despite them seeming perfectly happy on their travel year.
Rafe nodded, satisfied. Jace directed him to the myriad of toys spread on the floor, nearly obscuring it. Sometimes he nearly understood Alec’s concern that they were spoiled, but nah. If he was saw something he thought his nephews liked, he’d buy it. If he took them out, he’d get them unhealthy stuff and ice creams to eat. He was their uncle. That was his job. It was Magnus and Alec’s job to be the boring dads.
“I want to build the Col-o-se-um,” Max enunciated carefully. Clary came up to them, and Jace slid his arm around her waist, lightly pulling her in for a kiss.
“Where did you hear of the Colosseum?” She asked curiously.
“Bapak talked about it,” Rafe answered as they scrambled around looking for materials for the project. “He said he was there when it started to crumble. He said it was very ‘siting.”
“And then Daddy called him a very big liar,” Max added.
“But then Bapak said he was a liar whom Daddy loved,” Rafe continued.
“And Daddy said he was lucky he did,” Max said, gathering the cloth from their short-lived knitting project and dumping it to the side. Jace wondered how that was going to go in the Colosseum but decided not to ask. He didn’t want to know. “And Bapak agreed.”
“And then they kissed,” Rafe made a face. “So many kisses.”
“I don’t see why Alec and Magnus had to go on a vacation to get their share of romance,” Jace complained to his fiancée. “They seem to be bringing every cliché ever to life.”
“Yeah, but they won’t get their peace and quiet with you around,” Clary grinned as he made a face, and went over to the boys. “You know, I painted the Colosseum once.”
“Really?” Max asked, wide-eyed. “Can we see it, Tia?”
“Yes!” Rafe said excitedly. “I want to see your studio, Aunt Clary!”
“Sure, later,” Jace interrupted. “Didn’t you want to make your own Colosseum first? To work, builders!”
They nodded in agreement, starting to discuss (read: argue) how they ought to begin the construction.
“I don’t know how you get them to always listen to you,” Clart said, smiling, as the brothers argued over the largest of the plastic multi-colored building blocks Jocelyn had given Magnus and Alec, which Clary and Simon had played with when they were kids. There was a ‘CF + SL forever’ scribbled on one of them, which at one-point Jace would have loathed and felt intensely jealous of, but now merely smiled at in fond amusement.
How things had changed in the years since he’d left his father and the foreboding mansion in Idris to the welcoming shores of New York: Max. Alec. Isabelle. His mother. Robert. Simon. Magnus. Jem and Tessa. Ragnor. Emma and Julian. Rafe and Max. Kit.
And Clary. Always, always Clary. His one constant in the world, his home, where his heart would be forevermore.
He thought about the seven-year-old he’d been when his father had first told him that parabatai was weakness, emotions were to be hidden, love was destruction.
He’d run at risky missions and self-destructive behaviour and death in his teenage years like flies going to amber: so attractive a prospect that all intelligent thought was out.
He remembered telling Kit that however much he thought otherwise, he didn’t want to die. He remembered looking at that fragile, orphaned, sarcastic, scared, defensive child and feeling a pang of commiseration, of old memory and a person he wasn’t any longer.
“Uncle Jace?” Max tugged at him worriedly when he was silent for a while. “You okay?”
Jace pressed a kiss to his head, carefully avoiding his horns. He exchanged a look with Clary, who smiled softly at him. “Yeah, Max. I am.”

Cassandra Clare announced that (SPOILER) Tessa and Jem will meet Will in TWP and I'm not okay. Today I'm telling you about my Shadowhunters fanfiction, because I miss my NY people and I just got some kudos. And pride is too far away 😭
The Dark Artifices minor spoilers
"We'll take this," Jace said to the woman behind the counter.
She must have been a fairy, because she nodded and as she did so her hair moved, revealing pointy ears. "It's not your flag, though. The right flags light up."
Jace laughed. "Oh, no. They are my brother's and his husband's sons. I'm the uncle."
The fairy raised an eyebrow. "You don't say you're straight?"
"Is this some kind of invasion of queer spaces? I'm an ally, I swear."
"That wasn't what I meant." The fairy handed him the stuffed animal and took the money. "Usually, you guys want to scream at the world that yes, you are good people but you are not gay. Never be that someone tries to flirt with you."
"People flirt with me all the time. I'm incredibly attractive" Jace said with a feline smile. "How could I deprive gays of the honor of admiring me? Everyone should do it. Besides, it doesn't matter how straight you are, people will still have crushes on you."
***
Or, Jace, Max and Rafe go pre-pride shopping, the living room gets covered in rainbow glitter, and Alec is the best parabatai in the world. Oh, I almost forgot. There are rainbow stuffed animals 🌈
This headcanon rings so true for me. Queer shadowhunters fans (and ally too), do you agree?

In Another Life: Chapter One
Summary:
When Jace and Clary wake up to find themselves trapped in an alternate dimension where they are no longer Shadowhunters, they must figure out how to fill the role of their mundane selves while they try to get themselves home. But just because they are not Shadowhunters, it does not mean that the world is as simple as one might think. Especially when the question stirs in their minds of what really happens in a world without Shadowhunters? And is Valentine as good as he seems? Post City of Glass Jace and Clary go to a universe similar to 1x10 Shadowhunters AU dimension.
Ships:
Clary/Jace, Simon/Isabelle, Alec/Magnus
Characters:
Clary Fray, Jace Herondale/Lightwood, Alec Lightwood, Isabelle Lightwood, Magnus Bane, Simon Lewis, Valentine Morgenstern, Jocelyn Morgenstern
Other reading location:
When Jace opened his eyes, he looked around in alarm, not in a room he recognized though it seemed to recognize him. Sitting on a shelf was a photograph of him beside Clary, and he walked over to it, picking it up thoughtfully. His gaze landed on Clary and her beautiful fiery red hair, her green eyes looking at him as though he was the best thing in the world. She radiated happiness by his side, so much so it took him a moment longer than it should have to take in the rest of the photo that he never remembered being taken. He looked at the brightly colored clothes on his body, contrasting his regular all black attire, and the lack of runes on either of their bodies. It was as though they were simply mundanes, something Jace could never see himself being. The back of his left hand was bare, the clairvoyant rune no longer there and letting him see through the glamours, and as his gaze drifted up his arms, he didn't see any runes their either. He set the photograph down, wondering how this was possible.
He knew there were other dimensions of course, because Valentine had told him about other worlds when he was a child, but he hadn't known he could go into another world into the body of that dimension's Jace. But being here and runeless, with a photograph he never remembered taking, it was the only valid explanation. But a world where he didn't have runes left a lot of questions about who he was and what still existed in this world. Why didn't he have runes? Did he still have angel blood but never received the Marks? Or was he somehow a mundane or stripped of his runes and having to make a life for himself in the mundane world without his angelic abilities? Whatever it was, he needed to figure it out, sooner rather than later, and find a way back home.
The supposed to be a shadowhunter grimaced at the sight of his bright clothes in the mirror but assumed for now he should be pretending to be this version of Jace, at least until night where he could potentially get away with wearing darker clothes that would help him better blend in within the darkness, where he could start figuring out more about this universe without looking more as though he didn't belong. Despite his desire for everyone to be back in his home dimension, part of him longed for Clary, Alec, and/or Isabelle to be here as well, his Alec, Isabelle, or Clary. He imagined or rather hoped there would be an Alec, Isabelle, and Clary in this dimension because Jace didn't like the thought of being trapped in a dimension for an unknown amount of time where there was neither his siblings nor the girl he loved. Besides, he doubted any variation of himself that had met them would ever want to live in a dimension without them either.
Jace changed the shirt he was wearing to something else from the closet, pulling out a sapphire blue t-shirt which was at least not the bright white he had been wearing only moments ago. He changed into a pair of jeans and started looking for a jacket, making a face at the sight of some of the jackets this universe's Jace had as he searched for one with inside pockets. Finally, he found one hanging up in his closet behind other clothes. He checked to make sure it had good pockets before slipping it on. He headed out of the room, looking around and taking in his surroundings as he walked down the hallway. He appeared to be in a four bedroom New York apartment if he had to guess, just based on the number of doors.
He reached the kitchen, grateful that it was empty, and he started sifting through drawers. Finally, he opened the right drawer, but before he could draw out a small knife to serve as a weapon for an emergency, the door to one of the other bedrooms opened, and Alec Lightwood came out of the room, wearing a baby blue polo shirt. Jace stopped in his tracks, not pulling out the knife while his now mundane parabatai came towards him, and he closed the drawer casually, surprised by the appearance of Alec, who, in his universe, wore black even more than Jace did, and the only blue that was ever on Alec was typically just his eyes.
"Hey" Alec greeted Jace as he headed over to the kitchen, more relaxed than Alec usually was in Jace's dimension. He looked at Jace's shirt before looking at him curiously. "I thought you had work this morning."
Jace prevented surprise from showing on his face, having not considered that this version of him might have a job, a regular mundane job that he couldn't picture himself doing. After all, Jace had been training to excel at being a shadowhunter since he could read and even moreso when he could hold a knife. "I did originally, but there have been a change of plans" he told Alec, which was true. He didn't want to lie to any variation of Alec, and he didn't usually like lying at all unless it protected Clary or prevented anyone from seeing he was hurting.
"Well, I guess that means Izzy has to go without her usual free cup of coffee. Unless you want to whip up some here" Alec added with a grin as he looked at Jace, clearly expecting whatever kind of coffee he usually made for them.
The mere thought of that caused the supposed to be shadowhunter to nearly pause, but fortunately even after surprises, Jace was good at keeping himself collected unless it was about his family or especially Clary. However, despite that, the mere idea of Jace Way- Herond- no, Jace Lightwood (the shadowhunter was still not used to the consistently changing last names for him but Lightwood felt the most right) making coffee was something that was enough to shock him. His life was so centered on being a shadowhunter that the thought of doing anything mundane for a living did not feel right, especially something as mundane as brewing coffee.
"Not today. If I wanted to make coffee, I'd be at work right now instead of here" Jace pointed out as Isabelle came in the room, surprisingly dresed in a t-shirt with a Star Wars logo on it and pants. "You're wearing a Star Wars shirt?" The question escaped his lips before he had a chance to stop it. Isabelle Lightwood, usually dressed to impress, was standing before him wearing a Star Wars t-shirt and jeans.
"You know I like this shirt. Simon got it for me, and I'm spending time with him later. You're both going to his gig this afternoon, right?" Isabelle looked at them expectantly. "Because he could totally use support from his friends and not just his girlfriend and of course Clary"
Jace's attention piqued at the mention of Clary Fray, the girl he loved and adored, the one it had been killing him inside not to be with. But before he was able to respond to the question, Alec spoke up instead, a chuckle escaping his lips. "Of course Jace is going, especially since he isn;t working today. You know he goes where Clary goes if he can."
"I am planning on going" Jace said, wanting to know if Clary had come to this dimension with him or not, "though I was planning on leaving to go see Clary in a few minutes."
"You're not working today?" Isabelle questioned with a small frown as she looked at Jace. "You usually make sure to take a shift on the weekends. Are you okay?"
"I'm just not really feeling myself today. I'll be okay" Jace promised them. "What are you both doing today besides you going to see Simon today, Izzy?"
Jace figured asking that question at least gave him the opportunity to learn more about this dimension and what Alec and Isabelle were like while living as mundanes. From what he could gather, Simon and Isabelle were dating each other, and he had clearly gotten her to become nerdy like he was, though it may also have something to do with the fact they had been raised as mundanes rather than shadowhunters. And if Isabelle had known Simon longer than she did in his dimension, it was likely that would impact things like this, he supposed.
"Well, I should be heading to work soon because we are working on planning the anniversary party for the Institute, and the theme is amazing." Alec declared as he looked at Jace. "After that ends, I suppose I'll be going to Simon's band's gig. Otherwise, Izzy might kill me" he joked, causing Isabelle to glare at him.
The shadowhunter had so many questions rising in his mind, but he pushed them down and simply nodded, trying to plan out how he would get more information, information he hoped he wouldn't need if Magnus was here in this dimension and he could convince the warlock to help. It would be easier if he had Clary by his side since he knew his new girlfriend was much more likely to get this universe's Magnus to agree rather than Jace unless Magnus was drastically different here.
"I was going to work on making lunch for later today. Do you want to help?" Isabelle looked at Jace.
The blonde recalled when he had helped his Isabelle in the kitchen, he knew helping was likely going to be taste testing, which he supposed was better than making anyone sick from her awful cooking, but he did not want to subject himself to a victim of Izzy's cooking, no matter how much he cared about her. He wouldn't wish that cooking on his enemies. Well, actually.... maybe his enemies. Snapping himself out of the thoughts, he replied "No, actually I was about to go see Clary, and I'll probably be with her for a while, so I won't really be home to eat your lunch."
"And like I said, I need to go to work. I'll see you this afternoon" Alec said before leaving the apartment, not wanting to stick around the topic of his sister cooking anymore than Jace did.
Isabelle frowned at that. "Then I'll pick up food for lunch, but you're helping me make cookies later instead" she told Jace. "It would be a good idea to make a treat for the band after their gig."
"Buying cookies would be quicker."
"I want effort put into the thought" Isabelle replied with a small frown at his response. "It's for Simon"
As if that said everything, which he supposed it might have if he had been this universe's Jace Lightwood. His Isabelle, however, had just started apparently bonding a little with Simon after the death of Max. He had been the only one she let inside and had been the only one she listened to at all. He wondered briefly if there was a Max in this world, if their little brother was still alive.
"Alright, I'll do what I can to help" Jace said, though he had to admit, he had never made cookies before. He had made other foods over the years, though he favored just picking up food from Taki's, but desserts were not something he was familiar with creating, so he unfortunately would have to let Isabelle lead and do most of it (not that she wouldn't have done so anyways) but could
"Alright. Then I guess I'll see you later. Have fun with Clary. Or don't" Isabelle said at the thought of Jace and Clary having a bit too much fun. Those two couldn't go a day without each other.
A chuckle escaped Jace's lips, and he shook his head a little, and when Isabelle turned her back some, pulling out her phone to message Simon, Jace took a small knife out of the kitchen drawer, feeling naked without his runes or weaponry. Actually, he'd feel better being naked than being without defenses, even if it supposedly seemed as though there was nothing to worry about. He slipped it into the inside of his jacket pocket, not as accessible as he would have liked but knowing that no one would be expecting it on his person at all. Even without his enhanced speed, he should be able to get to it fast enough. Right?
With that thought in mind, he said goodbye to his sister before heading out of the apartment to go find Clary, who he had been struggling to restraint himself from going straight to the moment he woke up. He only hoped that she lived in the same apartment that she had when he had met her in his dimension. If not, he'd have to go to Java Jones or Simon's place in order to find her.

I absolutely love your work but I have a very specific request: what are some of your fave clace/shadowhunters fanfics 👀
I actually don't know any fanfics about Clace I'm ngl. The fandom did a real good job of mob mentality running them off during the whole only [REDACTED] matters thing a few years back. There used to be some really good ones on A03 but I haven't looked in a while because the mention of that fandom gives me a panic attack.
