WIP Wednesday (or Thursday for me lol)- 6-7 March 2024
Tagged by @nocoastposts!!! Thanks Ames <3
I finally got around to writing again! And I'm working on two fics at the same time, which is a first for me. I can't reveal the other one yet, so have the opening from my "Majorie" grief exploration song fic!
The last thing Henry expected during his weekly briefings was for Shaan to tell him that Philip has requested a meeting. It’s been a month since President Claremont’s second inauguration, a ceremony that Henry took the time out of his schedule to attend and support his boyfriend; four months since his relationship and sexuality were outed to the world, and the subsequent admission and support for him and Alex. The days that followed were a whirl wind of meetings, damage control, interviews, editorials, announcement, and new initiatives. It was a lot of tiring work, but this time around, it’s his own choices and decisions to make, his own projects to start. Everything is in his control now. His calendar has never been fuller, yet he feels more liberated than ever.

Katherine Stewart at TNR (08.10.2023):
Earlier this year, nearly 1,000 supporters of “National Conservatism” gathered at the semicircular auditorium of the Emmanuel Centre, an elegant London meeting hall a couple of blocks south of Westminster Abbey, to hear from a range of scholars, commentators, politicians, and public servants. NatCon conferences, as they are often called, have been held in Italy, Belgium, and Florida and are broadly associated with what is increasingly called the “New Right.” In London, speakers denounced “woke politics,” blamed immigration for the rising cost of housing, and said modern ills could be solved with more religion and more (nonimmigrant) babies. The break room was lined with booths from organizations such as the Viktor Orbán–affiliated Danube Institute, the U.K.-based conservative think tank the Bow Group, the Heritage Foundation, and the legal powerhouse Alliance Defending Freedom, which is headquartered in Arizona but has expanded to include offices in nearly a half-dozen European cities. When I attended NatCon London in May, I heard a number of American accents in the crowd, and I was not surprised to see Michael Anton, a former national security official in the Trump administration and a senior fellow at the Claremont Institute, a right-wing think tank, on the lineup. These days, Anton and other key representatives of the Claremont Institute seem to be everywhere: onstage at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC); at the epicenter of Ron DeSantis’s “war on woke”; and on speed-dial with GOP allies including Josh Hawley, J.D. Vance, and Donald Trump.
Most of us are familiar with the theocrats of the religious right and the anti-government extremists, groups that overlap a bit but remain distinct. The Claremont Institute folks aren’t quite either of those things, and yet they’re both and more. In embodying a kind of nihilistic yearning to destroy modernity, they have become an indispensable part of right-wing America’s evolution toward authoritarianism. Extremism of the right-wing variety has always figured on the sidelines of American culture, and it has enjoyed a renaissance with the rise of social media. But Claremont represents something new in modern American politics: a group of people, not internet conspiracy freaks but credentialed and influential leaders, who are openly contemptuous of democracy. And they stand a reasonable chance of being seated at the highest levels of government—at the right hand of a President Trump or a President DeSantis, for example.
[...]
Founded in 1979 in the city of Claremont, California (but not associated in an official way with any of the five colleges there), the Claremont Institute provided enthusiastic support for Donald Trump in 2016. Individuals associated with Claremont now fund and help run the National Conservativism gatherings; Claremont Institute chairman and funder Thomas D. Klingenstein also funds the Edmund Burke Foundation, which has held those National Conservatism conferences across the globe. Claremont is deeply involved in DeSantis’s effort to remake Florida’s state universities in the model of Hillsdale College—a private, right-wing, conservative Christian academy in Michigan whose president, Larry Arnn, happens to be one of the institute’s founders and former presidents. Claremont honored DeSantis at an annual gala with its 2021 “Statesmanship Award,” and the governor returned the favor by organizing a discussion with a “brain trust” that included figures associated with the Claremont Institute. If either Trump or DeSantis becomes president in 2024, Claremont and its associates are likely to be integral to the “brain trust” of the new administration. Indeed, some of them are certain to become appointees in the administrative state that they wish (or so they say) to destroy.
The Claremont Institute in the Trump era has become a clearinghouse for far-right and fascistic ideas.

An approximation of President Ellen Claremont's winning map against Michigan Governor Jeffrey Richards in Red, White, and Royal Blue. Her son convinced her to divert campaign resources from the Midwest to focus on her home state of Texas, which worked but had me yelling at my TV. That compensated for her losing a bunch of states Biden won in 2020: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and (presumably) Maine, plus Nebraska's second congressional district.
Assuming this is the 2024 or 2028 election, the film's math is a little off; Claremont nets 273 electoral votes despite picking up at least one in Maine. That only works if she somehow lost D.C., which is too small to see on the map in the film (or this one).

Random thoughts I had while watching Red, White & Royal Blue in no particular order.
- Henry's lips are so red and plush and they belong wrapped around Alex's dick.
- Alex's New Hair Tugging Kink Activated!
- Zahra has all the best lines. She is also terrifying and competent. Fuck, I'm so horny for her.
- WHY ARE YOU TWO TAKING YOUR CLOTHES OFF IN FRONT OF A WINDOW! THERE COULD BE PAPARAZZI!
- Oh Shit, that electoral map is giving me flashbacks to Nov 5, 2020 Tumblr Putin-Destiel-Election Day.
- Thank Fucking God they kept a few of the blowjob scenes in.
- SEX POWERPOINT!!!!
- WTF, Stephen Fry is the King??? THE IRONY.
- This movie was extremely self aware in pointing out how pretty Alex's eyelashes are.
- Can we just vote for Uma Thurman to become president in 2024?
- I need Henry and Alex to have babies together.
- They watered down how shitty the GOP nominee is but that's okay because I still hate them in my heart.
- ALEX CLAREMONT-DIAZ WILL NOT ALLOW BISEXUAL ERASURE. LONG LIVE THE BI KING.

"Failure is not an option. Trump and MAGA must be defeated at the ballot box, in courtrooms and in the media. We are reaching the crescendo that will make or break democracy. I believe we are close to the end of this part of the Trump Era — its final chapters — and that if he and MAGA are not defeated, a new story begins that will chart a new era of authoritarianism, oligarchy-driven economy, isolation from a world that doesn't trust us and the death of the free press, which is already coughing and gasping for air."
Think your vote doesn't matter? Please look into Project2025, the literal Republican playbook, put together by the Heritage Foundation and 45 other conservative entities like Alliance Defending Freedom, Claremont Institute, and Moms For Liberty. It was first handed to Reagan, who merely enacted the policy within it. Same with Trump - they are two heads of the same snake. Their vision for a Christofascist theocracy and just how they intend to implement it are painstakingly detailed. [Wikipedia article here]
Their goal begins with stripping away rights via the executive branch, and enacting sweeping laws to ensure the president will have absolute power over it - meaning the asshole you don't want in office versus the one you don't like being in office. There is a difference between voting to save a broken system that can be repaired by the people, and letting America fall into a fascist dictatorship that will need to be razed and rebuilt after the deaths of thousands that will happen. That is what you are choosing between.
Choose wisely.

The Path to Passing the Most Significant Gun Control Legislation in Decades - S2938
By Agosto Aliaga, Claremont McKenna College Class of 2024
July 24, 2023
Tumblr media
On June 25th, 2022, Joe Biden signed S2938, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, into law. S2938 enacted various changes to federal firearm laws, including efforts to expand background checks, broaden existing restrictions, and establish new criminal offenses. Additionally, the bill promoted access to and supported mental health services, enhanced school safety and security initiatives, and addressed gun violence in communities. [1]
Exactly a month prior, just days before school got out for summer, an 18 year old gunman entered Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, and murdered 19 students and two teachers.[2] Savlador Ramos legally purchased an AR-15 on his 18th birthday, despite alluding to plans for a mass shooting on social media in the months preceding.[3] The tragic shooting shook the nation and holds the mark as the deadliest shooting of the decade.[4] On top of outrage surrounding law enforcement's inadequate response to the shooter, the usual prevailing concerns regarding gun control resurfaced. With both midterm elections around the corner and the pressing threat of potential future shootings, representatives in Congress faced immediate and dire responsibility.
The Uvalde tragedy sparked a wave across the nation and social media calling for stricter gun control. The Bipartisan Safe Communities Act featured a rare case in which lobbying efforts were largely facilitated in a public space. In the aftermath of Uvalde, CEO’s and celebrities seized the role of lobbyists. Over 220 CEOs from the nation's largest firms “ sent a joint letter to the Senate … demanding ‘bold urgent action’ to address gun violence.”[5] On top of this, President Biden invited movie star Matthew McConaughey to deliver a speech to “the White House press corps in the James Brady briefing room.”[6] While at face value this may seem to be an insignificant ploy, McConaughey’s impact was quite the opposite. The actor held a uniquely advantageous position as a native Texan, influencing the state with the highest number of registered gun owners.[7] Unlike fellow actors, McConaughey presented a trusted voice to Texan gun owners, not as a member of the Hollywood elite, but as one of them. His twenty minute speech sent headlines across social media and further popularized the issue. He even managed to meet with Democratic Whip Dick Durbin to further motivate the passing of gun control legislation. Another key contributor to lobbying efforts came from the police.[8] Intuitively, police pushed for further gun control in order to keep guns out of the hands of potential criminals which in turn makes their jobs safer. Republicans, historically the party of law and order and the party representing law enforcement, felt an extra push from a key demographic of their supporters to enact gun control legislation.[9]
Democrats historically suffered from supporting gun control policy. Many credit the loss of their majority in the House in the 1994 midterm elections to their assault weapons ban, yet the increasing frequency of shootings have caused Democrats to reverse course on this.[10] Unlike decades prior, opposition to Democratic gun control efforts does not stem from their own party or voters nationwide, but from Republicans, especially those from deep red states.[11] Republicans are largely unwilling to touch gun control legislation. In the 117th Congress, a perfectly split Senate meant that at least 10 Republican votes were required to end the filibuster for any bill. After the Uvalde shooting, Senator Kevin Cramer explained that if he supported any significant gun control legislation, that most of his constituents “would throw [him] out of office.” In the Senate the less populous, but far more conservative, states wield a proportionally more significant impact on the outcome of bills when compared to the House. Of the 50 Republican Senators in the 117th Congress, “most” of them represented “deeply conservative states where gun ownership is treated as a sacred privilege enshrined in the Constitution, a privilege not to be infringed upon no matter how much blood is spilled in classrooms and school hallways around the country.”[12]
After Uvalde, the Democratic majority in the House managed to pass the “Protecting our Kids Act” which raised the legal age to buy semi automatic weapons to 21, and also installed measures to ban high capacity magazines.[13] The bill ran concurrently in the headlines with the S2938, but took far too aggressive of a stance. As Senator Cramer previously alluded to, Senate Republicans quickly shot down the bill. The Senate received HR7910 but never casted a vote.[14]
As seen with HR7910, any legislation touching gun control provided a near guaranteed rejection from Senators who represented constituents from the “deeply conservative states.”[15] The stinginess of Republican Senators forced Senator Durbin, the Democratic Whip in the Senate, to persuade a small number of Republican Senators to vote with the Democrats in order to surpass the 60 votes needed to end a filibuster. Durban honed in on Republican Senators from the typical swing states such as Susan Collins (R-ME), Tom Thillis and Richard Burr (R-NC), Pat Toomey (R-PA), and several others.[16] Despite arduous obstacles in the way of passing gun control legislation, the urgency behind the issue of guns allowed for a path forward.
S2938 enacted changes far short of its counterpart the Protecting Our Kids Act (HR7910), but still consisted of meaningful gun control legislation. In order to win over Republican votes, the bill dropped the 21 year old age restriction as well as the banning of high capacity magazines.[17]
The two key factors separating this push for gun control legislation compared to previous efforts were harmonic conversion and the decline of the NRA. First, the reason why Uvalde in particular led to gun control legislation compared to previous tragedies such as Parkland was due to the political makeup of the federal government. A Democrat in the White House, and a Democrat controlled House, meant that a path to passing legislation existed. Furthermore, the NRA halted previous gun control efforts because of the stark power they possessed within the Republican party. The organization which once carried unchecked sway over Republican lawmakers due to their large membership base and campaign contributions began to diminish despite predictions of mass growth.[18] The decline of the NRA further paved a path for Republican Senators to break free from their party’s historical voting record against gun control.
Due to extensive public pressure, the Senate managed to surpass the filibuster, and send the bill to Democratic held House. Ultimately, 15 Republicans were able to agree on creating safer communities by increasing access to and upscaling mental health treatment and expanding background checks. According to Senators’ past voting patterns, the most “statistically notable votes” came from Senators Joni Ernst (R-IA), Thom Tillis (R-NC), John Cornyn (R-TX), and Mitt Romney (R-UT).[19] The very next day, the House voted on the bill. The vote ran largely among party lines, all 220 Democrats voted for the bill, and of the 210 Republicans, only 14 voted for S2938.[20] A day later, on June 25, 2022, President Biden signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act into law.

Biden v Texas; The Complex Route to Rescinding the Remain in Mexico Policy
By Agosto Aliaga, Claremont McKenna College Class of 2024
June 11, 2023
Tumblr media
In January 2019 amidst an immigration crisis highlighted by caravans of migrants flocking towards the United States’ southern border, rapidly increasing illegal crossing attempts, and overflowing detention centers, President Trump instated his “remain in Mexico” policy or the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPPs). The policy held that “certain non-citizen,” asylum seekers, arriving at the southwest border of the United States were to be “returned to Mexico during their immigration proceedings.” Democrats who were already upset with the over arduous asylum process were further outraged that these vulnerable asylum seekers were forced to “face risks of kidnapping, extortion, rape, and other abuses in Mexico.”
When Biden entered office in January, one of his first moves was to suspend the program, by June the Secretary of Homeland Security officially terminated the program. However, the states of Texas and Missouri whose resources were suffering from increased immigration rates sued the Biden administration. The district court hearing the case sided with Texas and Missouri, and the Fifth Circuit and Supreme Courts declined to block the district court’s ruling. Then in October 2021 the DHS attempted to end the program again, but it was once again struck down by the district court and Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in December 2021. Biden appealed to the Supreme Court, and in June of 2022, 17 months after Biden initially suspended the program, the Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision that the Biden administration could constitutionally terminate the MPPs.

Sophie Fox-Claremont-Diaz
Sophie’s birthday is February 21st, born in 2024 (for astrology friends she’s a sun-Pisces moon-Leo ascending-Virgo)
She was born three months before Alex graduated from Law School
Alex and her spent a lot of time together as he was preparing for the BAR exam at all hours of the day.
She is dyslexic
She is biologically Henry’s and they had an anonymous egg donor
She is and honors and AP student! mostly taking advanced classes
By the time she is a senior she has become the captain of the debate team!
She plays libero for volleyball and center back for soccer
She regularly exercises to help clear her mind
Her senior year she is student body vice president and homecoming queen
she is very charismatic and extroverted.
she eats healthy and likes cooking recipes Alex and her Abuelo (oscar) have taught her
Alex’s nickname for her is Conejita meaning bunny.
She doesn’t drink much caffeine which is surprising for an AP student who is in two sports and in student government. We don’t know how she does it
She is a smoothie master and has perfected the perfect green fruit smoothie.
She is best friends with her cousins Lizzie and CJ (Elizabeth and Charlotte) and regularly takes to them over video chat
She goes to a catholic school up until middle school where she starts in a nice public school (well as nice as they can be)
From the time she understood what the paparazzi was until she hit about 14 she actually didn’t mind the attention. She’d smile and wave at photographers or throw a peace sign.
She’s the girl everyone knows in school that does really well at almost everything but is also really nice and sweet.
She has a dusty brown hair and green-blue eyes.
She has a small dusting of freckles over her nose
She mixes business casual pieces and athletic pieces for her everyday style.
Once she graduates she gets into a ton of good schools! Harvard, Yale, Bryn Mawr, and Oxford but she has a deep anxiety about moving away from her parents so she decides to go to Columbia and lives at home
She is named after Great Grandma Ana-Sofia and then has Alex’s mom’s name for her middle name
While all of the Fox-Claremont-Diaz children know both Spanish and English, Sophie is the one who also knows French

Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

Alex Claremont-Diaz thought everything was clear in his life. He’s the first son of the first woman president of the United States. He’s a soon to be graduate with a future in politics. He’s the brother of June, best friend of Nora, and long standing rival of Henry, the Prince of Wales. But when one of their arguments takes a turn for the worse (taking an disturbingly expensive cake down with them) their teams decide it’s time to stage an intervention. And so begins what’s supposed to be a photo-op, a fake friendship to appease the public and smooth over any ruffled feathers, but soon Alex finds himself wanting to see Henry on his own terms. One spontaneous, somewhat intoxicated kiss and identity crisis later Alex finds himself falling into bed with Henry. It’s supposed to be casual, physical, no-strings attached fun, but all too soon it becomes more than that. It becomes something worth risking their futures for.
My first thought about this book beyond I would die to protect Alex and Henry’s softboi love at all costs is that it is too fucking long. I would say the book needed to be at least 100 pages shorter than it ended up being and I’m surprised that it made it through to print at the length it is. That isn’t to say that I didn’t enjoy the writing or the sheer amount of detail provided, but it slowed down the pace and made it harder to stay engaged with for a significant period of time. It also made the ending feel slightly rushed in comparison to the rest of the novel.
That being said I loved this book even more than I thought I would and almost immediately bought my own copy on Kindle (I borrowed my roommate’s copy for this read) because I knew I would want to read it again in the future. It’s probably the perfect read for 2020 especially right now in quarantine because while this election doesn’t offer the chance for a woman for president this novel offers a hopeful outlook. It’s the AU to end all AUs (in regard to the current political landscape at least) in that it didn’t feel farfetched. It felt like something within our grasp (fingers crossed for 2024 even though that doesn’t sound like a real year) and it made for a nice escape from these uncertain times.
Finally, the moment when Alex gets Henry on the phone for the first time after the scandal breaks and just says Sweetheart broke me, I will never be the same. I could feel the rawness and the love in just the one word and that is so rare and difficult to achieve in a book.
Keep reading for some of my favorite quotes (note there are less because I was reading a physical copy for once and it takes more effort to mark fave quotes)!
Quotes:
“What I want to be prepared for my first ever royal wedding.” “You went to prom, didn’t you? Just picture that, only in hell, and you ahve to be really nice about it.”
“Listen, royal weddings are trash, the princes who have royal weddings are trash, the imperialism that allows princes to exist at all is trash. It’s trash turtles all the way down.”
“Risk assessment: FSOTUS failing to check himself before he wrecks himself will result in greater than five hundred civilian casualties. Ninety-eight percent probability of Prince Henry looking like a total dreamboat. Seventy-eight percent probability of Alex getting himself banned from the United Kingdom forever.”
“Sugar, I cannot express to you how much the press does not give a fuck about who started what. As your mother, I can appreciate that maybe this isn’t your fault, but as the president, all I want is to have the CIA fake your death and ride the dead-kid sympathy into a second term.”
June and Nora are ignoring him, caught in the bubble of intimacy he can never quite penetrate. Their relationship is something enormous and incomprehensible to most people including Alex on occasion. He knows them both down to their split ends and nasty habits, but there’s a strange girl bond between them he can’t, and knows he isn’t supposed to, translate.
“I always liked Luke [Skywalker]. He’s brave and good, and he’s the strongest Jedi of them all. I think Luke is proof that it doesn’t matter where yo ucome from or who your family is -- you can always be great if you’re true to yourself.”
“Doing what we do is fucking hard. But it’s harder for me. I’m the son of the first female president. And I’m not white like she is, can’t even pass for it. People will always come down harder on me. And you’re, you know, you, and you were born into all of this, and everyone thinks you’re basically Prince fucking Charming. You’re basically a living reminder I’ll always be compared to someone else, no matter what I do, even if I work twice as hard.”
“Henry’s willingness to dance is directly proportionate to his proximity to Alex’s hands, and the amount of giddy warmth bubbling under Alex’s skin is directly proportionate to the cut of Henry’s mouth when he watches him with Nora. It’s an equation he is not nearly sober enough to parse.”
“Henry’s whole face grimaces in frustration, his eyes casting skyward like they’re searching for help from an uncaring universe. “Christ, you are as thick as it gets,” he says, and he grabs Alex’s face in both hands and kisses him. Alex is frozen, registering the press of Henry’s lips and the wool cuffs of his coat grazing his jaw. The world fuzzes out into static, and his brain is swimming hard to keep up, adding up the equation of teenage grudges and wedding cakes and two a.m. texts and not understanding the variable that got him here, except it’s...well, surprisingly, he really doesn’t mind. Like, at all. In his head, he tries to cobble a list together in a panic, gets as far as, One, Henry’s lips are soft, and short-circuits. He tests leaning into the kiss and is rewarded by Henry’s mouth sliding and opening against his, Henry’s tongue brushing against his, which is, wow. It’s nothing like kissing Nora earlier--nothing like kissing anyone he’s ever kissed in his life. It feels as steady and huge as the ground under their feet, as encompassing of every part of him, as likely to knock the wind out of his lungs. One of Henry’s hands pushes into his hair and grabs it at the roots at the back of his head, and he hears himself make a sound that breaks the breathless silence, and--”
If Alex’s head is a storm, Henry is the place lightning hits ground.
If Henry's voice on the phone was a tether, his body is the gravity that makes it possible, his hand gripping the back of Alex’s neck a magnetic force, a permanent compass north.
Alex grew up with a mother who was a sometimes baffling combination of intensely organized and committed to lines of emotional communication, like an overly invested life coach. When he got his first girlfriend, she made a powerpoint presentation.
