The restlessness and entrepreneurial energy that would drive this prolific jazzman - one-part musician, one-part businessman and one-part hustler - were already apparent when Clarence Williams was 12, running away from home to join a traveling minstrel show run by popular comedian Billy Kersands.

That started a remarkable journey from New Orleans to Chicago to New York that would see this one-time honky-tonk pianist, vaudeville showman and cabaret manager - plus songwriter (including some that weren't really his own), music publisher, theatrical producer, A&R man and Harlem Renaissance convenor - play with some of the best, notably including early recordings by Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet and Bessie Smith.

Clarence Williams was supposed to retire in 1943, having sold his back catalogue (of more than 2,000 songs) to Decca Records for US$50,000. He was soon back in business however, running his own used goods store, The Harlem Thrift Shop. He continued to write songs until he lost his sight in 1956, after being hit by a cab.

This brother was 6'8 and threw his weight around. Some of you may remember Bub Hewlett in the movie Hoodlum, he was the character that Clarence William's played that worked for Dutch Schultz. There was one scene that was straight up Hollywood and nothing that Dutch would've tried even if he was high out of his mind. Dutch told Bub to take the food home as scraps for his family. Dutch more than likely would have lost teeth or his life for coming at Bub like that, but Hollywood loves to push this false narrative of tough white gangsters that had blacks shook. No one, NO ONE talked to Bub that way. When Bub ran with Dutch, he went to war with Bumpy and Madame St. Clair. After Dutch died, he became a part of Bumpy's crew. Around the time that Malcolm X, (who came up as a youngster when Bumpy was making a name for himself) was receiving death threats, he went to Bumpy who in turn passed messages to the NOI about backing off of Malcolm. Unfortunately Malcolm didn't take up Bumpy's offer of protection. Considering that Bumpy was the one who got Malcolm out of Harlem when he was marked for death when he was running the streets, it seems like he would've let his big homie work his. But he didn't want any violence between black folks. Which mainly meant that they would have gotten a lot of the NOI out of the way. Bumpy's crew was serious. His protection would have meant that OG's like Bub Hewlett, Poor Johnny, Alabama Black, Nat Pettigrew, Junie Byrd, Pretty Ricky, Vince the Prince, and a few others. Clarence Williams III, who played Linc Hayes in "The Mod Squad," died at his home in Los Angeles after battling colon cancer, his manager Peg Donegan told CNN in a statement Sunday. Williams was 81. Williams was born in New York City on August 21, 1939, according to the statement. He began his career in a production of "Dark of the Moon," and appeared on Broadway in "The Great Outdoors." His performance in "Slow Dance on the Killing Ground" won him a Theatre World Award and a Tony nomination, the statement said. Along with his theatre performances, Williams also starred in several shows and movies, including: "52 Pick-Up," "Against the Wall," "Reindeer Games," "Purple Rain," "The General's Daughter," "American Gangster," "Half Baked" and "Lee Daniels' The Butler."
