Artificial Neural Networks and Hopfield Type Modeling

From the mathematical point of view, an artificial neural network corresponds to a non- linear transformation of some inputs into certain outputs. Many types of neural networks have been proposed and studied in the literature and the Hopfield-type network has be- come an important one due to its potential for applications in various fields of daily life.
A neural network is a network that performs computational tasks such as associative memory, pattern recognition, optimization, model identification, signal processing, etc. on a given pattern via interaction between a number of interconnected units characterized by simple functions. From the mathematical point of view, an artificial neural network corresponds to a nonlinear transformation of some inputs into certain outputs. There are a number of terminologies commonly used for describing neural networks. Neural networks can be characterized by an architecture or topology, node characteristics, and a learning mechanism [1]. The interconnection topology consists of a set of processing elements arranged in a particular fashion. The processing elements are connected by links and have weights associated with them. Each processing elements is associated with:
• A state of activation (state variable)
• An output function (transfer function)
• A propagation rule for transfer of activation between processing elements
• An activation rule, which determines the new state of activation of a processing element from its inputs weight associated with the inputs, and current activation.
Neural networks may also be classified based on the type of input, which is either binary or continuous valued, or whether the networks are trained with or without supervision. There are many different types of network structures, but the main types are feed-forward networks and recurrent networks. Feed-forward networks have unidirectional links, usually from input layers to output layers, and there are no cycles or feedback connections. In recurrent networks, links can form arbitrary topologies and there may be arbitrary feed- back connections. Recurrent neural networks have been very successful in time series prediction. Hopfield networks are a special case of recurrent networks. These networks have feedback connections, have no hidden layers, and the weight matrix is symmetric.
Neural networks are analytic techniques capable of predicting new observations from other observations after executing a process of so-called learning from existing data. Neural network techniques can also be used as a component of analysis designed to build explanatory models. Now there is neural network software that uses sophisticated algorithms directly contributing to the model building process.
In 1943, neuro physiologist Warren McCulloch and mathematician Walter Pitts [2] wrote a paper on how neurons might work. In order to describe how neurons in the brain might work, they modeled a simple neural network using electrical circuits. As computers be- came more advanced in the 1950’s, it was possible to simulate a hypothetical neural net- work. In 1982, John Hopfield presented a paper [3]. His approach was to create more useful machines by using bidirectional lines. The model proposed by Hopfield, also known as Hopfield’s graded response neural network, is based on an analogue circuit consisting of capacitors, resistors and amplifiers. Previously, the connections between neurons was only one way. At the same years, scientist introduced a “Hybrid network” with multiple layers, each layer using a different problem-solving strategy.
Now, neural networks are used in several applications. The fundamental idea behind the nature of neural networks is that if it works in nature, it must be able to work in computers. The future of neural networks, though, lies in the development of hardware. Research that concentrates on developing neural networks is relatively slow. Due to the limitations of processors, neural networks take weeks to learn. Nowadays trying to create what is called a “silicon compiler”, “organic compiler” to generate a specific type of integrated circuit that is optimized for the application of neural networks. Digital, analog, and optical chips are the different types of chips being developed.
The brain manages to perform extremely complex tasks. The brain is principally com- posed of about 10 billion neurons, each connected to about 10,000 other neurons. Each neuronal cell bodies (soma) are connect with the input and output channels (dendrites and axons). Each neuron receives electrochemical inputs from other neurons at the dendrites. If the sum of these electrical inputs is sufficiently powerful to activate the neuron, it transmits an electrochemical signal along the axon, and passes this signal to the other neurons whose dendrites are attached at any of the axon terminals. These attached neurons may then fire. It is important to note that a neuron fires only if the total signal received at the cell body exceeds a certain level. The neuron either fires or it doesn’t, there aren’t different grades of firing. So, our entire brain is composed of these interconnected electro- chemical transmitting neurons. This is the model on which artificial neural networks are based. Thus for, artificial neural networks haven’t even come close to modeling the complexity of the brain, but they have shown to be good at problems which are easy for a human but difficult for a traditional computer, such as image recognition and predictions based on past knowledge.
Fundamental difference between traditional computers and artificial neural networks is the way in which they function. One of the major advantages of the neural network is its ability to do many things at once. With traditional computers, processing is sequential– one task, then the next, then the next, and so on. While computers function logically with a set of rules and calculations, artificial neural networks can function via Equation, pictures, and concepts. Based upon the way they function, traditional computers have to learn by rules, while artificial neural networks learn by example, by doing something and then learning from it.
Hopfield neural networks have found applications in a broad range of disciplines [3-5] and have been studied both in the continuous and discrete time cases by many researchers. Most neural networks can be classified as either continuous or discrete. In spite of this broad classification, there are many real-world systems and natural processes that behave in a piecewise continuous style interlaced with instantaneous and abrupt changes (impulses). Periodic dynamics of the Hopfield neural networks is one of the realistic and attractive modellings for the researchers. Hopfield networks are a special case of recurrent networks. These networks have feedback connections, have no hidden layers, and the weight matrix is symmetric. These networks are most appropriate when the input can be represented in exact binary form. Signal transmission between the neurons causes time delays. Therefore, the dynamics of Hopfield neural networks with discrete or distributed delays has a fundamental concern. Many neural networks today use less than 100 neurons and only need occasional training. In these situations, software simulation is usually found sufficient. Expected and optimistic development on all current neural network’s technologies will improve in very near future and researchers develop better methods and network architectures.
In the present paper, we briefly summarized historical background as well as developments of the artificial neural networks and present recent formulations of the continuous and discrete counterpart of a class of Hopfield-type neural networks modeling using functional differential equations in the presence of delay, periodicity, impulses and finite distributed delays. Combining some ideas of [4,6-10] and [11], we obtain a sufficient condition for the existence and global exponential stability of a unique periodic solution of the discrete system considered.
Artificial Neural Networks (ANN)
An artificial neural network (ANN) is an information processing paradigm that is in- spired by the way biological nervous systems, such as the brain, process information sees more details [12] and references given therein. The key element of this paradigm is the novel structure of the information processing system. It is composed of a large number of highly interconnected processing elements (neurons) working in unison to solve specific problems. ANNs, like people, learn by example. An ANN is configured for a specific application, such as pattern recognition or data classification, through a learning process. Learning in biological systems involves adjustments to the synaptic connections that exist between the neurons. This is true of ANNs as well.
The first artificial neuron was produced in 1943 by the neurophysiologist Warren McCulloch and the logician Walter Pitts [2]. But the technology available at that time did not allow them to do too much. Neural networks process information in a similar way the human brain does. The network is composed of a large number of highly interconnected processing elements (neurons) working in parallel to solve a specific problem. Neural net- works learn by example. Much is still unknown about how the brain trains itself to process information, so theories abound. An artificial neuron is a device with many inputs and one output (Figure 1). The neuron has two modes of operation; the training mode and the using mode. In the training mode, the neuron can be trained to fire (or not), for particular input patterns. In the using mode, when a taught input pattern is detected at the input, its associated output becomes the current output. If the input pattern does not belong in the taught list of input patterns, the firing rule is used to determine whether to fire or not. An important application of neural networks is pattern recognition. Pattern recognition can be implemented by using a feed-forward (Figure 2) neural network that has been trained accordingly. During training, the network is trained to associate outputs with in- put patterns. When the network is used, it identifies the input pattern and tries to output the associated output pattern. The power of neural networks comes to life when a pattern that has no output associated with it, is given as an input. In this case, the network gives the output that corresponds to a taught input pattern that is least different from the given pat- tern. Hopfield-type neural networks are mainly applied either as associative memories or as optimization solvers. In both applications, the stability of the networks is prerequisite. The equilibrium points (stable states) of networks characterize all possible optimal solutions of the optimization problem, and stability of the network’s grantee the convergence to the optimal solutions. Therefore, the stability is fundamental for the network design. As a result of this fact the stability analysis of the Hopfield-type networks has received extensive attention from the many researchers, [4,6-9,11,13] and references given therein. The above neuron does not do anything that conventional computers do not already do. A more sophisticated neuron (Figure 3) is the McCulloch and Pitts model (MCP). The difference from the previous model is that the inputs are ‘weighted’, the effect that each input has at decision making is dependent on the weight of the particular input. The weight of an input is a number which when multiplied with the input gives the weighted input. These weighted inputs are then added together and if they exceed a pre-set threshold value, the neuron fires. In any other case the neuron does not fire. In mathematical terms, the neuron fires if and only if

where Wi, i = 1, 2, . . ., are weights, Xi, i = 1, 2, . . ., inputs, and T a threshold. The addition of input weights and of the threshold makes this neuron a very flexible and powerful one. The MCP neuron has the ability to adapt to a particular situation by changing its weights and/or threshold. Various algorithms exist that cause the neuron to ‘adapt’; the most used ones are the Delta rule and the back-error propagation. The former is used in feed-forward networks and the latter in feedback networks.
Neural networks have wide applicability to real world business problems. In fact, they have already been successfully applied in many industries. Since neural networks are best at identifying patterns or trends in data, they are well suited for prediction or forecasting needs including sales forecasting, industrial process control, customer research, data validation, risk management, target marketing.
ANN are also used in the following specific paradigms: recognition of speakers in communications; diagnosis of hepatitis; recovery of telecommunications from faulty software; interpretation of multi-meaning Chinese words; undersea mine detection; texture analysis; three-dimensional object recognition; hand-written word recognition; and facial recognition.

The Tendency of First-Time College Students in an Online Learning setting to Experience Anxiety

Overview Anxiety is defined as a human emotion consisting of fear that emerges when threats are perceived and can hinder cognitive processes (Sarason, 1998). In an online classroom, anxiety is mostly felt due to the student's internet connection, home setting, and the lack of proper tools and equipment used for learning. The differences in which the students learn and face problems on or offline have also contributed to the student's anxiety (Barr & Tag, 1995). This negative feeling can deter the performance and efficiency of the students which most likely lead to missing a requirement or dropping the course (McLaren, 2004).
Framework and Review of Related Literature
According to St Clair (2015), learning virtually may come off as terrifying especially to the first-timers. Saade and colleagues (2017), mentioned that 21-22 year-old students are more likely to feel some sort of anxiety in online learning. Contributing factors may include technology anxiety, internet anxiety, talking in virtual groups, and online test anxiety. Furthermore, there is higher rates of dropouts during eLearning due to the learners’ lack of time, lack of motivation, poorly designed courses, and incompetent instructors (Uzunboylu and Tuncay, 2010). Students taking up online classes react to usability issues with strong sentiments. Students under time or goal pressures or when technological issues arise are said to experience higher levels of anxiety (Scull, 1999). The switch from a traditional setting to an online one interferes with the students’ schema, which then can be responsible for the cause of anxiety. The brain is a “prediction machine” that is programmed to anticipate threatening stimuli and beneficial responses based on our past knowledge. Without the prior knowledge of online learning, the students tend to feel anxious with the uncertainty it brings. Anxiety blocks the conventional thinking method of the brain that lead the students to experience extreme worrying. College students experience high levels of anxiety, and it reduces their mental processes and storage performance of memory and disrupt their potential reasoning (Darke, 1988). Their perception of threats are exaggerated, causing the feelings of  fear and anxiety to emerge. Emotion is a powerful force that can amplify attention and supplement perception under the right circumstances, but can also hinder them in others (Compton, 2003).
Proposed Intervention
The proposed intervention is the Pomeck Intervention. It is a combination of the Pomodoro technique, Flowtime Technique and the Check-in Quiz with a few modifications to counter procrastination, finish tasks in an orderly and timely manner, and reduce stress and anxiety.

Limitation of the Intervention Proposal
The motivation of the students will play an important role for the implementation of this intervention. Pomeck Intervention requires commitment, determination, and motivation. A student who is anxious but is eager to get better grades is different from a student who is anxious and doesn't want to get better grades. This intervention will be most effective on those who is eager to get better grades than those who do not. 
Theories and Practices of Cognitive Psychology
Some of the theories and practices of cognitive psychological concepts integrated in this proposal includes the distributed practice of elaborative rehearsal from memory. Distributed practice refers to a distributed rehearsal in different times, quite similar to pomodoro's distributed workload. This ensures better transfer of information from short term memory to the long term memory, which also results to bettter retrieval of information when needed. The better is the information retrieval, the better they perform academically. Better performance results to higher self-esteem, which then lowers anxiety. This low levels of anxiety inversely impacts mental imagery. Pomeck Intervention helps the students overcome deadline anxieties as it forces the students to finish tasks during the pomodoros days before the deadline. The faster the student finishes requirements, the more time the student gets to check, proof read, and edit the output to ensure better quality. This in result helps the student think more positively of the future, since he/she was ready. This readiness also helps lower anxiety.
The Pomeck intervention can be explained by a problem solving approach which is the information processing approach. This approach begins with determining the problem and ends with the problem being solved. Just like in Pomeck intervention, first thing to be done is to identify potential tasks (initial state) then lay down all possible activities, resources and procedures (problem space) and finally, finishing up with a solution (goal state). With this intervention, this enhances student's time management and increases its productivity which then lessens its anxiety in doing all the tasks that are needed to be done especially with an existing deadlines. The more consistent the student manages its time and tasks, the more space for improvements and refine quality of work which then results to a high productivity and low anxiety.

Learning in the Digital Age by Scott Wimberly

In just 35 years, education has undergone a massive transformation due, in large part, to technological advances in personal computing.  Cost has been a driving factor of this transformation. The personal computer revolution really started affecting education in 1982 with the Commodore 64, the bestselling PC of all time at 17 million units.  Putting a PC in 17 million homes would not have impacted education without word processing programs like Word Perfect.  Word processing gave students access to tools that digitized their thoughts and introduced spellcheck, word count, and grammar.

Word processing was also a boon to both students and teachers who no longer had to worry about cryptic penmanship that required use of the secret decoder ring.

But seriously, the C64 sold for under $200 and introduced personal computing to the masses along with the digital tools that came with it, like word processing, spreadsheets, internet, file transfer, and chat boards.  Those early white-on-blue word processing programs gave way to robust Office suites that further improved the ease with which a student could document their thoughts.  Spreadsheets organized numbers, etc. etc.  IBM picked up the mantle with the IBM PC then Dell undercut their prices and continued Commodore’s push to lower costs and increase access to personal computing.  For the first time, schools themselves could afford to build computer labs and teach their student valuable skills like typing, pong, and Oregon Trail.

Yeah, educators really didn’t know what to do with computers in the beginning. Seriously, they had no idea how to adapt the PC to their teaching past writing papers.  Imagine taking an entire course that is nothing but typing.  For a whole semester.  That happened.

           Where do we go from typewriters, floppy discs, and awful screen contrast?  Online learning.  After a decade or two, educators eventually began to grasp more than word processing and typing, then began to imagine how computers could affect the classroom as a whole.  What is the single factor that affects cost per student in a school setting?  Class size.  How do you ramp up class size without jamming 500 people into an amphitheater where three quarters of them are playing games and talking?  Online learning.
           In my experience, most attempts at online learning fail miserably at the primary goal:  Teaching.  What they succeed at is lowering costs.  For universities, they amplify revenue by increasing class size per professor.  A single professor can teach multiple online classes because there is no lecture to attend and assignments can be more flexible. Each class can be a simple photocopy of the last with minimal effort.  
Online classes are now used by companies as well as schools.  Companies use online training for compliance training, certifications, harassment training, and even as a primary source of instruction.  They pay production departments to create classes that are repeatable and easily distributed while requiring no floor space rather than hire and maintain a large training department.  Online learning is a huge cost saving initiative for companies which is driving wider and wider adoption.

           Here’s the thing though:  Do people really learn from these online classes?  Like, really learn.  Do they retain the knowledge then apply it in their everyday lives, during the course of business, and does it improve productivity?
           That begs the question:  How do people learn?  There are essentially two schools of thought and they are both fairly similar:  the first breaks it down into listening, seeing, and touching learners while the other school organizes it into construction, cognition, community.  The first approaches the type of learning that people respond to best while the second attempts to deconstruct how people actually retain knowledge.  Then there is Bill Gates.  Surprisingly perhaps, Bill Gates has his own theory of how people learn: “If you have a broad framework then you have a place to put everything, so you have the timeline or you have the map, or the branches of science and what's known and what's not known”.  Elon Musk actually happens to think along the same lines:  “It is important to view knowledge as sort of a semantic tree -- make sure you understand the fundamental principles, i.e. the trunk and big branches, before you get into the leaves/details or there is nothing for them to hang on to”.  
           So, what does this tell us?  How does learning theory intersect with online learning and the “Digital Age”?  Well THAT is the $64,000 question and here is the answer:  Online learning needs to provide a framework that students can interact with, where they can anchor theories, and gain an understanding of the fundamentals.  If we are worried about education then online learning needs to be more than watching a video and answering ten questions.  The chances are, your compliance department is not equipped to design training that provides a framework and anchors concepts in fundamental principles. Companies will need to invest in research and training departments, education facilities will need to look past online courses as a revenue amplifier, and educators will need to get innovative in their interactive approaches.  Effective online courses require real planning with exquisite execution that is actually far more difficult to effectively pull off than classroom learning because there is no opportunity yet for the online class to adapt to the student.  Yet.
           What if AI could adapt the class to how you learn based on an inventory of module and techniques?  THAT is the next horizon of learning in the digital age.

Apple’s Strongest Case to Reclaim the Education Market Is Not the New iPad
“Welcome to your first day of school!” That was how bubbly Apple employees, decked out in the green-and-yellow outfits that matched the colors of Lane Tech College Prep in Chicago, welcomed arrivals to the company’s highly-anticipated education event this morning.
Attendees were given a schedule of “classes” and directed to the cafeteria for orientation. Among the 1000 present were former vice president Al Gore, Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and 300 educators from around the world.
An announcement over the PA system reminded everyone that the general assembly session was mandatory—and to not chew gum as no one is above detention. Bells signaled transitioned time between hands-on workshops led by educators.
That Apple chose this selective magnet school as the site for its latest product showcase—rather than, say, the San Francisco Moscone Center or its Cupertino headquarters—reflects the company’s renewed focus on the education market.
“We believe that our place at the intersection of technology and the liberal arts makes it possible to create and amplify our creativity,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said on stage. “This is something only Apple can do.” Throughout the speeches, presentations and product showcases, company employees and Apple touted how their tools can offer “creative” learning experiences that no others can do.

It was hardly Apple’s first day at school; the company’s education efforts trace back four decades. But once a staple—and stable—presence in the classroom, Apple’s dominance in the education market has taken a backseat. According to Futuresource, a UK market research firm, devices running the Chrome operating system accounted for close to 60 percent of all sales of mobile devices in the U.S. K-12 education market in 2017. Apple’s share made up roughly less than 20 percent—a number that trails Microsoft’s as well.
What will it take for Apple to reclaim its pole position? Indeed, the company proved rumors right by unveiling a new iPad. But Apple has never lacked for flashy gadgets. Rather, the most important updates may be upgrades to collaboration and management tools that could make those devices much easier to deploy and use.
Here’s what we saw.
First, the ‘Education’ iPad
The big announcement that caught everyone’s eye—and splattered across all the headlines—was the new 9.7-inch iPad, unveiled by Apple’s vice president, Greg Joswiak. The device retails at $329, but education purchasers can get it for $299. Among the upgrades is a 10-hour battery life, an 8-megapixel camera and increased processing power with the A10 fusion chip. Such features, he claimed, made the device more powerful than any laptop or Chromebook. That’s a not-so-subtle dig at Apple’s competitors—and the first time that the company called out Chromebooks at a keynote event.
The new iPad is also compatible with the Apple Pencil, the stylus that previously only worked with the iPad Pro. However, the Pencil must still be purchased separately—$99 for public and $89 for schools. Other add-ons showcased at the event were a new Logitech keyboard case which retails for $99 and Logitech’s own stylus, Crayon, which retails for $49.
Add all the costs up, and schools are looking at close to $500 for the new iPad with the keyboard and stylus. That cost is still steeper than Chromebooks, which start at $179. (And not to mention, Google announced yesterday its first “education tablet made for Chrome OS” that comes with a built-in stylus. The cost: $329.)
There were rumors leading up to the event that Apple would reduce the price of its iPads to as low as $259. That didn’t happen. Still, Brendan Kelly, an Apple Distinguished Educator who teaches at Wilson Elementary School in West Allis, Wisc. thinks the extra cost is worth it.
“The ability to create on an iPad is second to none,” Kelly said in an interview. “You’re not going to record what’s in front of you with a Chromebook. With an iPad, you can move everywhere. I don’t see anything that comes close.”

Accompanying Updates and Upgrades
In addition to the iPad, the company unveiled a slew of upgrades and apps to work in concert with the tablet. These included:
Smart Annotation for iWorks: New features in iWorks tap into the new functionalities with the Apple Pencil. The iWorks suite, which includes Pages, Keynote, and Numbers, will soon have Smart Annotation, a feature that allows users to mark up documents and allow for teachers or peers to share feedback.
iBook Creator: The popular iBook creator, which was previously only available on Macs, is now available for iPads. Students can create ibooks and use built-in collaboration features that allow them to work in groups.
Everybody Can Create: Building off of the company’s “Everybody Can Code” initiative that aims to introduce students to computer science, Apple announced a new curriculum, “Everyone Can Create.” Available this fall, this program will focus on four strands: music, video, photography, and drawing. The curriculum is not meant to be a standalone class, but rather weave these creative elements into existing classes to engage students.
Teacher Learning Center: The company also announced the launch of free, self-paced courses provide teachers guidance in implementing devices and curriculum into their instruction.
More Storage: To make sure students have enough digital space for their new creations, Apple also announced that education Apple ID account holders will enjoy an increase in their iCloud storage from 5 GB to 200 GB.
Augmented Reality Features: After the main event, attendees got to explore apps that harness augmented reality to dissect frogs and explore landscapes created on empty table tops using the iPad. Ordinary classroom walls turned into works of arts which students could examine up close to see each brush stroke.
The (Possible) Game Changer: Data in a Smoother Workflow
While the ability to create multimedia projects and experiences with iPads has been a major strength of Apple, managing how students use these devices as part of the classroom workflow has not alway been easy. The company’s strongest case to woo back educators may lie in two updates that aim to resolve these issues.

The first, Schoolwork, appears to be Apple’s response to Google Classroom. Launching in June, Schoolwork allows a teacher to send out documents and open specific apps on their students’ iPads. It also gives them visibility into what each student is working on to make sure they are on task or to provide support. The tool integrates with Apple’s remote device management app, Classroom, and School Manager, which helps manage and deploy devices.
An additional feature in Schoolwork is that teachers can assign students to a specific activity within a third-party app that is integrated with Schoolwork. That means, for example, that a teacher can direct kids to do a specific assignment within Tynker, a coding app that is one of 15 education apps currently synced with Schoolwork. These apps can also feed data back to teachers to show students’ progress.
Giving teachers a single place to see how students are performing across different third-party apps is an enticing prospect. Other edtech companies have recently rolled out solutions to aggregate data from multiple programs, including Yet Analytics and Clever’s Goals, but the ability to assign a specific activity and receive data back is unique to Apple’s Schoolwork (for now).
For other education app creators to sync with Schoolwork, Apple is inviting developers to check out ClassKit, a set of APIs that they can use to connect with Schoolwork. Mindful of the aftermath of the Facebook and Cambridge Analytica incident, Apple vice president Susan Prescott underscored on stage that any data passed is private, and that the company has made available guidance for developers to meet these privacy requirements.
Additionally, Apple launched the Shared iPad feature which brings it up to speed with Google Chromebooks and Microsoft devices. Recognizing that not all schools have 1:1 programs, this feature allows different students to pick up any iPad and login to their unique profile and access their individual apps and files.
Final Thoughts
Apple’s vision of pushing education towards more creative thinking skills, enabled by technology, is certainly lofty. The idea behind fostering creativity in students through projects and genuine engagement with the world resonates with many educators. Unfortunately these ideals are not always aligned with the realities of an education system that still emphasizes standardized testing and compliance to rigorous academic standards.
Then there’s the simple issue of cost. Even with all of these new features announced today, the iPad’s price tag still remains high relative to its competitors—and cost cannot be ignored in districts where budgets have been slashed. This is especially true for a device without a built-in keyboard, in a world where typing remains a critical skill. It reinforces the existing notion that iPads are good as a tactile device more suitable for students too young to type—and just a nice-to-have for older ones.
While the new iPad took the spotlight, the operational improvements enabled by Schoolwork could have the most significant impact on teachers as it reduces the barriers to implementing the devices in classrooms, and allows them to assign targeted activities for students. Of course, that can be used to reinforce having students do independent work on their devices—and that may not be Apple’s ultimate vision. But it could make a compelling case for bringing iPads back to the classroom.

STARTUPS AND COMPUTER
What they mean by blogger is not someone who publishes in a weblog format, but anyone who thinks east coast investors, not so much; but anyone who publishes online. Good writing should be convincing because you got the right answers, they wouldn't need us. And that could be bad for VCs. Is the mathematician a small man because he's discontented? Or at least, a thesis was a position one took and the dissertation was the argument by which one defended it. A physicist friend recently told me half his department was on Prozac. What makes the answer appear is letting your thoughts drift a bit—and thus drift off the wrong path you'd been pursuing last night and onto the right one adjacent to it.1 Follow the threads that attract your attention. Wise and smart are both ways of saying someone knows what to do by a boss.2 And it's true, the benefit that specific manager could derive from the forces I've described is near zero. Instead of matching beige cubicles they have an assortment of furniture they bought used.3 At YC, the culture was the product.
And a lot of their time on their own projects? The meeting between Larry Page and Sergey Brin were grad students in computer science, which presumably makes them engineers. Are you crazy? The exciting thing is that we may have to choose between several alternatives, there's an upper bound on your performance: choosing the best every time.4 Well, there are next to none among the most valuable features.5 See what you can extract from a frivolous question?6 That one succeeded.7

Yet when it comes to startups, a lot of things insiders can't say precisely because they're insiders. But now you can read this, I should be working.
