Last week, we highlighted the need to increase diverse books in our school/class libraries or curricula and examined the demographics of the population that you serve. 📊⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ So what’s next?⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ A book audit.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ 😯 I know that sounds intimidating…but basically, a book audit is when you take an inventory of your books in light of specific characteristics, such as the ethnicity of the protagonist.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ You could use this helpful tally sheet from @sfpsmom (bit.ly/DiverseLibraryInventory) or create your own in Google Sheets or Excel. Including the titles of the books is optional. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, just do the tally marks. The point is to identify whose voices are being represented through the books.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ After you’ve gone through your school/class library and/or curricula, total up each column.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Now, sit with your data.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ 👉🏽 What patterns emerged? ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ 🗣 Whose voices are the loudest? Quietest?⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ 🤔 How does this data compare with the demographics noted last week?⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ ⭕️ What gaps need to be filled?⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ These are hard questions. Feelings may arise that may not feel too good. Remember that diversifying your library/curricula is important work. We know better. Now we have to do better.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Next week, we will explore some notable nuances to consider when examining diverse books. Yo....... this is THE MOST BEAUTIFUL book I have EVER read. The story is culturally epic. I definitely have some students who could relate to the characters. 332 pages and I knocked it out in 2 days. I could've read it in one day if I didn't have responsibilities. I grabbed this book for my class library in 2018. I just never got around to vetting it so I can insert it. (Then the pan****c hit.) I'm mad it took me 3 years to do so. The chapters are written in what I would compare to stanzas. It looks and reads so poetic. I can't rant and rave enough over this work of art. My students will ALWAYS have access to books that represent them. The stories, characters, and authors all looking like them. That will be 95% of my library. LLI does not represent people of color. Lot's of talking turtles, frogs, rabbits, etc. I'm changing the narrative one book at a time. One student at a time (sometimes 4 or 5). Shout out the the author Jasmine Warga. "Other Words for Home" is a Fantastic book. It's in my top 10 easy. It might be spring break, but I keep thinking back to a book speed dating activity my AP classes did the day before break started. AP Language and Composition life is very structured and formal with analysis and rhetoric, so I used this speed dating time as a way to reintroduce my students to choice in their reading selections. It was loud and slightly chaotic, but it was worth it to see many of them find a book they truly WANTED to read. Time well spent.

So you sit with him and look at life with newness, the way he sees it. 3 Create the right environment-2 Your child does not necessarily do what you did in life. Your child should do something that you didn't even dare to think about. Only then will this world move forward and useful things will happen. It is a fundamental responsibility of mankind to create an environment whereby the next generation of humans are at least one step ahead of you and us. It is very important that the next generation live a little more happily, with less fear, less favoritism, less confusion, less hatred and less suffering. We should follow this goal. With no malice intended towards any other markets, I've always felt that the most wonderful picture books came from my fellow Commonwealth countries. There's just something about the quality and calibre of children's literature out of the UK, Australia, New Zealand, India, etc. that is often a cut above. Well, in terms of Chanukah books, Malachy Doyle and Christopher Corr's gorgeous new "The Miracle of Hanukkah" (2019) certainly hasn't done anything to dissuade me from this opinion! If you're looking for the ideal picture book to explain the exciting origins of the holiday to young kids, full of absolutely beautiful, richly colourful illustrations, and an interesting look at how those origins became today's holiday practices, look no further. "The Miracle of Chanukah" is utterly thorough without ever dragging.
