Do you know why Agrippa divorced Claudia Marcella, his second wife?
Tumblr media
It's not often I get to answer two asks at once! Double anon action!! Wait that sounds like a porno
As with so many things, this comes down to Augustus meddling in people's love lives. In 28 BCE he told Agrippa to marry Claudia Marcella, and in 21 BCE to divorce Marcella and marry Julia (Augustus' daughter). Agrippa and Marcella's feelings about that aren't recorded...
Tumblr media
Suetonius, Augustus, 63
But why did Augustus order it? Cassius Dio (54.6) gives us two reasons: first that Augustus wanted to enhance Agrippa's political power, so Agrippa could work more effectively in Augustus' absence; and second, that Agrippa was too powerful and had to "either become [Augustus'] son-in-law or be killed."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is an odd passage, and at first, I thought Dio was implying some sort of distrust between Agrippa and Augustus. But there's no other allusion to such distrust in any of our sources, and Dio himself talks a lot about how devoted Agrippa was to Augustus.
I think a more likely meaning to Maecenas' statement - if it is real; Dio does make mistakes - is that a breach could open between Agrippa and Augustus' family after Augustus died. Agrippa married Julia in 21 BCE, only two years after an illness nearly killed Augustus. At that time, Augustus had given Agrippa his signet ring, probably designating him as a successor. But he left nothing to his nephew Marcellus, whom many people had assumed would be next in line instead.
Tumblr media
(Dio, 53.31)
Augustus recovered. Marcellus died of illness later that year. These events may have caused tensions between Agrippa and Marcellus, or between Agrippa and Augustus' other relatives...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Dio, 53.32; Velleius Paterculus, 2.93.2)
...But that might have been just a rumor. It's only natural for people to worry about what would happen to the government after Augustus' near-death, and the last civil war had been only seven years ago. It's also natural that they'd imagine a rivalry between Augustus' two potential heirs: the skilled but lowborn general and the patrician golden boy. And that some people, especially aristocrats, would feel like the "wrong" heir survived...
So I think Augustus considered three things: 1) his own fragility; 2) with Marcellus dead, he had no relatives who could succeed him; and 3) the only person competent enough to succeed him, Agrippa, might not be accepted by the aristocrats. If Augustus didn't want another civil war to break out the moment he died, he had to fix that, ASAP.
So Augustus has Agrippa marry Augustus' daughter, Julia, who's conveniently widowed now that Marcellus is gone. If Agrippa and Julia have sons (and they do), then Augustus can designate those sons as his heirs, and if he goes kaput then Agrippa can act as regent until his kids are grown. Even the nobles will be satisfied if the kids are officially Caesars and not Agrippitos, hence why Augustus adopts two of the boys later. Peace and love on planet Earth! Pax Romana!
That's why Agrippa divorced Claudia Marcella, in my opinion. I can see why he went along with it. Apart from the fact that his kids would (presumably) inherit the empire, preventing a potential war after Augustus' death would be a pretty strong reason.
But it's also an example of how coldly calculating Augustus was, even after he rebranded himself as just your Friendly Neighborhood Overlord Princeps. He rearranged his loved ones' lives in whatever way was most politically useful, grief and awkwardness and trauma be damned. We don't know how Agrippa or Claudia Marcella felt about being told to divorce and remarry other people. But we do know it would eventually cause Julia to start acting out, and Tiberius to run away to Rhodes.

IULLUS ANTONIUS: Antony's only surviving son
He was the son of the Triumvir Mark Antony and his second wife Fulvia Flacca Bambula.
He was raised in his father's divorced wife Octavia's household after he was orphaned when his father committed suicide following his defeat at the battle of Actium in 30 BC.
Tumblr media
Iullus was to leave for Alexandria along with this elder brother Marcus Antonius Antyllus according to their father's wishes sometime in 34 BC, but for reasons unknown, his stepmother Octavia only sent Antyllus and kept him with her.
Named after Julius Caesar by his father, Iullus married his stepsister Claudia Marcella Major after her divorce from Agrippa in 21 BC. He became praetor in 13 BC, consul in 10 BC and Asian proconsul in 7 BC and was said to be highly regarded by Augustus. He is mentioned by Horace in his own poetry where he speaks of an occasion when Iullus intended to write a higher kind of poetry praising Augustus for his alleged success in Gaul. Iullus was a poet and is credited with having written twelve volumes of poetry on Diomedia sometime before 13 BC, which were destroyed after his death.
Although when it began is unsure, Iullus became a lover of Julia the Elder. Marcus Agrippa died in 12 BC and Julia had been forced to remarry her stepbrother, Tiberius. Julia's marriage to her stepbrother had become a disaster and she was desperate to divorce him. Tiberius had left Rome in 8 BC leaving Julia and her five children by Agrippa, Gaius Caesar, Lucius Caesar, Julia the Younger, Agrippina the Elder, and Agrippa Postumus, in Rome. Julia felt that her children were unprotected and may have approached Iullus to be a protector for her children, especially her two elder sons, Gaius Caesar and Lucius Caesar, who were Augustus' joint heirs.
Tacitus censures Augustus in “calling, as he did, a vice so habitual among men and women by the awful name of sacrilege and treason, he went far beyond the indulgent spirit of our ancestors, beyond indeed his own legislation.”
In the telling of Cassius Dio:
when [Augustus] at length discovered that his daughter Julia was so dissolute in her conduct as actually to take part in revels and drinking bouts at night in the Forum and on the very rostra, he became exceedingly angry. He had surmised even before this time that she was not leading a straight life but refused to believe it. For those who hold positions of command, it appears, are acquainted with everything else better than with their own affairs; and although their own deeds do not escape the knowledge of their associates, they have no precise information regarding what their associates do. In the present instance, when Augustus learned what was going on, he gave way to a rage so violent that he could not keep the matter to himself but went so far as to communicate it to senate. As a result, Julia was banished to the island of Pandateria, lying off Campania, and her mother Scribonia voluntarily accompanied her. Of the men who had enjoyed her favours, Iullus Antonius, on the ground that his conduct had been prompted by designs upon the monarchy, was put to death along with other prominent persons, while the remainder were banished to islands. And since there was a tribune among them, he was not tried until he had completed his term of office. As a result of this affair many other women, too, were accused of similar behaviour, but the emperor would not entertain all the suits; instead, he set a definite date as a limit and forbade all prying into what had occurred previous to that time. For although in the case of his daughter he would show no mercy, remarking that he would rather have been Phoebe’s father than hers, he nevertheless was disposed to spare the rest. This Phoebe had been a freedwoman of Julia’s and her accomplice and had voluntarily taken her own life before she could be punished. It was for this that Augustus praised her.
Both contemporary and modern historians have suggested Iullus had designs upon the monarchy and wanted to marry Julia before her children Gaius and Lucius came of age possibly to form some sort of regency. Although no substantial evidence was ever provided by Augustus for such a claim. It is possible that she planned to divorce Tiberius and make Iullus Antonius protector of her sons.
The scandal finally broke in 2 BC, Augustus took action on his daughter Julia's alleged promiscuity. Iullus was exposed as her prominent lover. The other men accused of adultery with Julia were exiled but Iullus was not so lucky. He was charged with treason and sentenced to death. He was either executed or according to Velleius Paterculus, died by his own hand rather than be humiliated by execution.
He had at least 3 children with Claudia Marcella, namely Iullus Antonius, Lucius Antonius and Iulla Antonia.

hiiii :) i saw your art about agrippa and octavian and i found pretty interesting their dynamic and obviously the artistic side, i was kinda of curious how would you represent that agrippa marry julia the daughter of octavian
it's octavian just going from being best friend/ lover/ liege to father-in-law
so! I don't really think their personal dynamic changes that much despite any changes of legal labels and familial proximity
octavian and agrippa functionally rule rome for a bit as co-regents in all but name (with octavian granting agrippa more or less equal political power to his own), and solidifying personal or political ties through marriage alliances is nothing new, like: julius caesar does it w/ julia and pompey, octavian does it with octavia & mark antony (although octavia actually operates on a much more even footing to her brother than a lot of people give her credit for) it's that octavian does it TWICE with agrippa (first with his niece, claudia marcella major, and then even more immediately with his daughter, julia) that makes me go, oh okay. interesting, fellas.
all of that + agrippa's habit of distancing himself from his own family (name/history) and giving octavian credit for all his own successes over and over again without octavian asking (to agrippa's own detriment [see: the signet ring incident], and octavian does ask: only he asks this of marcus licinius crassus (consul 30 BC) because crassus' successes are a threat, not a gift) and octavian creating a single point of failure, so to speak, with his dynast building plans because he doesn't effectively diversify his portfolio beyond agrippa is all very. well.
(like, I do think it's interesting that octavian tries to make agrippa his heir-successor on more than one occasion [through marriage, the signet ring, can't forget that crown incident, and an honorable mention for the display of grief he has on agrippa's death] I mostly think that their continuing to do All Of That All The Time made problems for other people)
anyway, I think all the labels operate as background noise to them. or something. idk if this makes sense, I'm Very Tired right now and it has been Several Months since I have thought about them beyond 'extremely funny that in suet., cal., 23.1, caligula made incest allegations against octavian to avoid being related to agrippa.*'
*caligula has octavian, agrippa, and mark antony on his family tree

Did Agrippa divorce his first wife to marry closer into the Julian family?
We don't actually know what happened to Agrippa's first wife! Alas, Attica disappears from the historical record after the birth of her daughter Vipsania.
Personally, I think it's more likely she died than was divorced, because Cornelius Nepos' account of Atticus' death describes Atticus asking for Agrippa to come see him in his final days, and makes no mention of Attica. Atticus and Agrippa's continued friendship may also point away from a divorce during Atticus' lifetime, but then again, Atticus got along well with nearly everybody anyway.
There is a coin dating to 30 or 29 BCE in which Agrippa appears with a beard, which may have been a sign of mourning for Attica:
Tumblr media
(Left: Agrippa; right: Octavian. The text reads "Imp[erator] DIVI F." and the coin was likely minted to celebrate their defeat of Antony and Cleopatra.)
That's getting into speculation, though. Our sources don't say either way.
Agrippa's second marriage, to Octavian's niece Marcella, would've certainly indicated a close continuing bond between him and the Julian family. We don't know if it was Agrippa's or Octavian's idea, but Octavian would have been involved. He tried to create an appearance of a division of power between equals, rather than holding all the authority himself like a dictator, and he liked to keep power "in the family" by both promoting his relatives' careers, and by marrying the most promising politicians into his family. (Less charitably, you could call this nepotism.) And even just on a personal level, Octavian probably wanted their families connected, too.

Top 5 sopranos <3
damn. i can't. im gonna try and not cheat but idk
1. Renata Tebaldi (duh)
2. Joan Sutherland (preferably young Sutherland, up to like mid-1960s when you could still somewhat hear actual words in her singing dkdhdndhn but i love her always)
3. Rosa Ponselle and Claudia Muzio (i love them both and they're kinda the same time period category but if I had to choose. yeah, Ponselle)
4. Marcella Sembrich-Kochańska and Luisa Tetrazzini and Nellie Melba (I CANT CHOOSE. they're my holy trinity of Ancient Goddesses of Coloratura - I'd say, objectively, Tetrazzini was the best when it comes to pure vocal technique, but Sembrich is the one closest to my heart so. Sembrich)
4. Edda Moser and Carol Vaness (they're THE Mozart sopranos. they never held anything back, always gave 100% of drama and full voiced singing, and that's THE ONLY WAY to sing Mozart. period. Moser ultimately wins because she's been with me from the very beginning, was one of my very first favourite singers, and she's ruined all Queens of the Night for me and her recording of Martern aller Arten makes me wanna scream and kill and maim like no other. I listened to her long before I even touched Tebaldi or Sutherland etc. and I'm very nostalgic about her. but Vaness is honestly so good too y'all, THE Fiordiligi and Vitellia, no one comes close to her in these roles, and also one of my two most favourite Donna Elvira-s actually).
5. Antonietta Stella (couldn't decide whether to put Nilsson, Flagstad or her but while I do think both N and F were Objectively better sopranos, I decided to go with my heart and my heart loves Stella forever and always. the problem with her is that, she either sings something absolutely wonderfully with a wall of huge, pure, beautiful, unrestricted sound, or she fucks up completely, rarely anything in between. but I just love her, I do, no matter what)
i feel so guilty for not including so many others of my favourites so im gonna mention them in the tags just to ease my conscience lol

#notizie #news #breakingnews #cronaca #politica #eventi #sport #moda Read the full article
