I just finished rereading The Secret History and so much of what happens makes sense now that I remember they were all either: A drunk, B on drugs, or C sleep deprived. No wonder their first thought was: ‘let’s commit murder to cover up murder!’

Why does nobody talk about how Cloke Rayburn thinks he ohh so smooth with the whole drug dealing situation??? Like EVERYONE KNOWS but for some reason he thinks no one does???? And in the newspaper when he describes Bunny as "a real straight guy - definitely not mixed up in drugs or anything like that." Like WHAT THE HELL CLOKE?? You really need to learn the art of subtlety, tf is wrong with you???

i just finished reading tsh a few days ago but i already want to reread it

moment of silence for cloke rayburn when he told the Greek class about his drug business in NY and then got thrown under the bus by henry (after cloke told him not to tell the police) and had to endure the blame of bunny’s disappearance for days. poor guy.

henry is so mean it’s kinda funny tho LOL.

Who did tell Julian that Richard was from California? Most likely Bunny, who probably got the intel from Cloke Rayburn by way of Judy Poovey. It’s just one of these shivery little moments in TSH where we sense things going on beyond what Richard knows. I think it’s why reading TSH is such an immersive experience. The Hampden campus is a real, vivid place, there are all kinds of things happening outside of Richard’s perspective---like people trying to figure out where he’s from and what he’s about.

I always, always wonder in this scene if Julian knows that Richard is lying about his privileged West Coast upbringing---and lets him carry on because he’s thrilled. Not by Richard’s tales of Hollywood glamour, but by his eagerness to fictionalize himself. I sometimes think Julian might have made his own way in the world by doing the same thing. There’s a feeling that, although Julian had been a seemingly constant presence among a cohort of well-heeled mid-century intelligentsia, he wasn’t always welcomed among them. He wasn’t exactly one of them. Perhaps he also made himself up, as Richard is doing in this scene, to erase a humble past and present himself as the person he wanted to be. Does he sense in Richard a fellow traveler in the art of illusion?

In continuation of this post:

When discussing the twins, Francis accuses Camilla of leading Henry on.

“And the same with Henry. He used to be crazy about her, I’m sure you know that; for all I know he still is.”

He used to be crazy about her. Henry’s feelings for Camilla were so intense at one point that they were obvious. But they never officially got together, so Francis assumes that Camilla wasn’t interested and only led Henry on. Notice that Francis uses the past tense. He used to be crazy about her - in the present, Francis is not sure about Henry’s feelings because Henry is hiding them better.

But we’ve seen enough clues in the previous post to realize that Henry is involved with Camilla. So what happened? What could have prevented these two from becoming a couple openly as early as the previous year? Well... Charles. Charles is the obvious answer.

Charles who does not react well when he comes home and finds Richard alone with Camilla. Charles who nearly broke Francis’ arm when he was about to kiss Camilla after the Lobster Pagoda dinner. Charles who glowers in his food when Camilla, sitting next to him, says that she’s been at Henry’s apartment. Charles who, when the murder drives Henry and Camilla closer to each other, begins throwing things around the house and abusing Camilla.

“They’re very jealous of each other. He much more so than she. [...] We used to talk about what fun it would be to have a sister.” He chuckled. “More fun than either of us imagined, it seems,” he said. “Not that I think it’s so terrible, either - from a moral standpoint, that is - but it’s not at all the casual, good-natured sort of thing that one might hope. It runs a lot more deep and nasty.”

“[...] They were always keen on each other, those two. And I’m no prude, but this jealousy I find astounding. One thing I’ll say for Camilla, she’s more reasonable about that sort of thing. Perhaps she has to be.”

She has to tolerate Charles’ sleeping with other people because she doesn’t really have a choice. He is the emotionally volatile, potentially violent one. What is Camilla going to do? She doesn’t have the money to get away from Charles and she has to finish her education so even if they lived separately they’d still be on the same campus, in the same classroom.

“She’d behave a lot more like Charles if she were allowed to; he’s so possessive, though, he keeps her reeled in pretty tight. Can you imagine a worse situation? He watches her like a hawk.”

Francis is right. Camilla seems in a great mood after she went to her Charles-sanctioned date with Cloke Rayburn. She even takes the opportunity to kiss Richard that evening. The kiss was unnecessary. Camilla isn’t interested in Richard. She is leading him on, and seems to enjoy it.

Charles is a very jealous and possessive individual and it makes sense that Henry and Camilla were forced to play a slow, long term game about their relationship. Perhaps it’s what added even a layer of excitement to it, the forbidden quality of it. Maybe it’s what makes it so special for Camilla - she’s finally found someone on her level, with whom she can build a relationship right under her jailer brother’s nose.
