I know playing the Definitive Edition helps, but a hallmark of the Dragon Quest series is quality remakes so it's still a fine point to say 11 had a lot of solid post-game content. Right amount in my opinion, 9 went the route of limitless procedurally-generated dungeons and it's fun for a while but past a certain point you kinda have to just read a guide for the right way the developers left to beat the secret bosses. Which was also a way to rematch old ones but tough. At a certain point it felt really really "gameplay loop" and occasionally you'd get a random drop loot. Would have been way more fun if the multiplayer aspect worked like it did in Japan or I had a few friends, but now it's a single-player MMO and not in the fun way like .Hack was. There were some good side quests, but nothing like horsey racing!
Now that I've had time to soak it all in and play through the extra stuff 11 is just so good. If you haven't played any of the series it's fine to jump into and get a taste of what it builds off of, but if you've played the prior entries it is such a masterpiece. Even stuff like getting to level 99 on everyone didn't feel tedious with the Electro Light combo. Yeah it was kinda gamey to pull it off but when you only really have to do it like, a dozen times maybe to get from endgame levels to max it strikes that balance of doing something substantial without the like, Pokemon problem of that stretch where you have to grind the Elite Four for a single level at a certain point. And well...there's one other thing that made even that type of wringing out every last drop worth it...
Tumblr media
I have wished for something like this in just about every JRPG I've played and while some have tried the concept none really get it right. After the main boss, and the surprise other boss, and the past game boss rush...you have the Timewyrm. Having everyone max level is a baseline to make this fight even feasible. But like, I've done these types of challenge bosses before. If I like a game I'll try to find the time. Emerald & Ruby WEAPON in Final Fantasy 7, the Genie in Dark Chronicle/Dark Cloud 2 (a real candidate for all-time favorite), the alternate hells in Disgaea. The one thing they almost never get right is making it too gimmicky. You pretty much have to use combinations of Materia to beat the weapons that result in sitting there watching the same summon cutscene on loop. Disgaea was sooo much empty grinding. Dark Cloud? When you have action RPG elements it's more about player skill but that one was a great example.
The Timewyrm though? It was what I always wanted. A classic RPG secret boss where you have to max out and find all the best gear but isn't too different from other fights after that. The series never lost that ethos of tight design and that why I still love it. Fingers crossed we get an English release out of these talks of making a single-player version of X. If not, looks like we have our first whispers of XII!

Today on cloud plays games: blew several of my team the fuck up in Disgaea because I was like “I wonder what destroying this geo thingy does when its color is yellow but I only see the blue and red panels” having been previously informed that if I destroy geo thingies on panels of a different color they go boom.
I learned that it covered the whole field when the whole field ascended this realm and fucked up my team on its way out.
I’m very good at games. But to be fair this is one of the tutorials.

I love Toma, but does he really think this is an appropriate time to be after The Ass? (referring to the last panel of today's page)
If this was an anime Elka would freak out and he’d go all pink and SWEATDROP;;; and sputter: “IT’S JUST WHERE MY HAND LANDED BAKAYAROU!!”
God I’ve been playing so much Disgaea 5 the past few days. Everything is scribble clouds and sweatdrops and spinny penguins.

what do u like abt disgaea ? im been interested in it & im wondering if i shld play it
oh lots of things!!! i might be clouded by nostalgia since disgaea2 is the first jrpg i ever played but the gameplay is really fun, the characters are interesting and have cool designs, the story is compelling, the artwork and soundtracks are amazing, and more i cant think of! they are long games though, idk if thats a good or bad thing for u, apparently it takes 40hrs or so just to finish the main story plus theres postgame and an endless mode on top of that so its a commitment but i think its worth it ^__^

Second Section of this little scavenger hunt.  Same rules...I can use a picture from any show or game, as long as I can identify them, even if I haven’t seen it personally.  Since it’s a hunt more than a “I want a pic of this chara”
Character Situations
Main Character The main character of any show or game.  If there are two characters counted as the lead, you can use either of them! FOUND...Sword and Shield Male and Female protagonists with Lillie
Main Antagonist Now, as Anime sometimes shift who the Main Antagonist is (due to subordinates taking over after a main villain dies, or even just new antagonists every arc) and games do this from time to time too, as long as the person spends some time as the major threat in the heroes’ eyes, it will count. FOUND...Shigaraki with Himiko (Hero Aca)
Two Cosplayers as a Canon Couple Now, I know “canon” can sometimes be debatable when it comes to a series.  Therefore, we’re only going for 100% verified couples who get together by the ending, between a show/game and a sequel series, or they’ve been stated to be romantically involved by the creators themselves.  So for characters who appear to be canon but don’t officially get together (such as Ark and Ivy from CIMA...I know you don’t know who they are but that means nobody is going to complain about me using them as an example), they wouldn’t count. FOUND...Alm and Celica (Fire Emblem Echoes)
Two Cosplayers as a Non-Canon Couple This is for any couple that 100% DOESN’T get together (usually because one or more of them are involved with someone else, or the show/game isn’t romantic in nature).  Again, that means you can’t use people (like, again, Ark and Ivy) who seem to be canon but aren’t 100% confirmed, as they exist in a gray zone between canon and non-canon.  However, if the character is from a Harem that doesn’t answer who the MC canonically got with, any of the characters would be fair game (unless one is heavily implied to be the canonical love interest, but then you could use any of the other characters).  You should probably try to choose a pair that is clearly playing them as a couple.  However, if you can’t find any, feel free to choose any pic of two people you ship together, or possibly just make finding a duo acting romantic as bonus points.  But...nothing with any extra characters in it (unless you’re playing it off as an OT3, OT4, etc.). FOUND...Ophilia and Therion (Octopath Traveler).  Hey!  I’m in one of these!  The non-canon couples were pretty dry this year and this is my favorite ship for her.  Even if we didn’t take the pic as a shipping pic.
Cosplaying Family Sometimes, the parents who cosplay will do a family cosplay with their kids.  This must contain at least one adult and one child or teenager, and they must be in costumes from the same game or show!  Not a family where one parent went as Kagome, one child went as Deku, and the second child went as a Pokemon Trainer. FOUND...Robin, Tharja, and Morgan (Fire Emblem Awakening)
Guy With a Giant Weapon It can be wide.  It can be tall.  It can even be both!  As long as the damn thing is nearly as large or larger than you (or at least as large as your convention rules will allow) it can work! FOUND...Breath of the Wild Link with a Lynel Sword (Legend of Zelda)
Character With Lots of Weapons He doesn’t have to naturally carry them all on him in the game/show.  Or even be a dude!  But as long as you see someone running around with at least 3 weapons, you can use it! FOUND...a Cloud getting weapons ready for a fake duel (FF7)
Superhero I don’t care if it’s an American Comic Book hero, a Magical Girl, or a Japanese take on the American Super Hero!  If the character can be classified as a Super Hero, you can use them! FOUND...Tsu (Hero Aca)
Magic User Tomes, Staves, Scrolls.  Healing or Destruction.  Human or Non-Human!  If the character’s power is over mystical forces, they fit! FOUND...Flonne, Fallen Angel Version (Disgaea)
Deity Character They can be a god or goddess who shaped and created the world.  Someone with limitless power.  Or even along the lines of “nigh immortal and doesn’t consider themselves divine but is considered a god.”  Just as long as they’re seen as divine by someone within the universe.  Demon or Youkai Gods do count if that’s all you can find. FOUND...A Konosuba Group, so that means Aqua was there (Konosuba)
Dragon Character They can be in a full dragon suit, use body paint, look human but have some draconic features such as wings or a tail.  Or even just be fully transformed into their human form.  If the game or show classifies them as a Dragon, they work! FOUND...a hilarious pic of Corrin and Azura doing Jojo Poses due to a botched FEH summoning ritual (Fire Emblem Fates)
Demon Character Good Demons or Evil Demons, it doesn’t matter.  I’d even count Youkai in this mix if you manage to find someone from a series that focuses on it (there are usually a few Touhou characters running around).   Just as long as their series of origin classifies them as a Demon in some way. FOUND...Rin, actually in full Demon Mode (Blue Exorcist)
A “How Do They Battle Evil in This?” outfit Sometimes...games and anime make no sense!  Too skimpy!  Dress too long!  Complete fashion disaster where their only victories should be due to making the enemy laugh so hard!  It all can count as long as you or other people ask this question about them. FOUND...Judith (Tales of Vesperia) although she was also with Flynn who definitely does not count on this!
Pokémon Trainer They can be an actual character in the games or anime, a representation of one of the Trainer Classes in the games, or even just someone wearing normal clothes but running around with Pokeballs and at least one plushie!  Although, you can choose to only go for actual characters or classes, or make getting one of them a bonus point. FOUND...Red with a Pikachu and Charmander
Any Pokémon Design Reinterpreted as Clothing Seriously!  I’ve seen some creative things, such as the Hoenn Weather Trio being reinterpreted as a Kimono (Kyogre), a Samurai (Groudon), and a Ninja (Rayquaza).  People who cosplay actual Pokemon usually do an amazing job at capturing their chosen ‘mon in human outfits. FOUND...Schoolgirl Scorbunny
Animal Companion Any animal that might assist the heroes, regardless of whether or not they are the game or show’s mascot.  Even if that character is only around for minimal time, if they appeared and helped out, they count! FOUND...Rubble, Sky, Marshall, Chase (Paw Patrol...no, really, they even helped cheer up a crying baby at one point)
Mascot Character The opposite of above!  It’s a mascot, regardless of whether said mascot is an animal, a mechanical lifeform, or even a mecha!  As long as it’s very synonymous with the series of origin, it works! FOUND...Detective Pikachu (Pokemon)
Fursuit Whether they’re portraying an actual animal character or their own furry avatar, it doesn’t really matter.  As long as they’re in a full on fursuit that you have to hand it to them for wearing even in the summer! FOUND...Susie (Delta Rune)
Group of Bishonen Doesn’t all have to be from the same series.  As long as a group of friends are portraying a bunch of hot guys, it fits.  Also, they don’t have to be the only people in the group, like if you got lucky and managed to find the entirety of a Reverse Harem’s cast which included the female lead they were all going crazy over.  As long as most of the people are playing guys, it’s cool. FOUND...Fire Emblem Lord Group (that also had Lucina and Celica)
Character From a Game That’s Not Out Yet As long as you took the picture before the game is out, it’s fine.  Even if said game is going to be coming out within a few days! FOUND...Kris and Ralsei (Delta Rune), though if you don’t think it counts due to Toby Fox’s vagueness on when the game will come out, I also did find Sonia from Pokemon Sword and Shield (because this fandom works crazy fast...there was also a Milo and two Wooloo running around but I didn’t get pics).
Jesus! No, really!  I’ve seen people cosplaying Jesus at many a convention! FOUND...I found him!
ACQUIRED POINTS...21

What’s you fav jrpg games on ps2?
Not necessarily obscure, but I played the hell out of all the dotHack games, all the Megami Tensei games, both Dark Cloud games, most of the NIS SRPG’s (esp. Disgaea 1& 2, La Pucelle Tactics, and Phantom Brave), Xenosaga I, FFXII, Atelier Iris 1 & 3, Stella Deus, Dawn of Mana (I realize I’m the only person who likes it), Shining Force NEO, Kingdom Hearts I, Shadow Hearts Covenant, Rogue Galaxy, Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter, Arc The Lad Twilight of The Spirits, Jade Cocoon 2, Grandia II/III/Xtreme, Forever Kingdom and Tsugunai.
And that’s only a fraction of the JRPGs we got in the US.
So that’s why the PS2 is my favorite console.

I was so dragonology obsessed as a kid I bought the board game and the card game, and I made @threetrollsandadryad play both with me when he was here this weekend.
He beat me at the board game, I won at cards, but barely. I also couldn’t find the rules for the board game and we failed to locate them online, so we did it as best I remembered.
I also have the wizardology board game somewhere, but it’s probably buried in our still-extant apartment boxes or basement hoard.
We went to the planetarium near my house today and saw the show it has, which was fun. I’m legally obligated to partake in all things space-related, given my name. The natural history museum that houses it also has a lot of fun stuff to look at. So many taxidermy birds.
When @wueyahfantai was here on Saturday we mostly just wandered the mall, which was fun because we discovered a new milkshake place that is pricy but looks like it’d be worth it. We also walked around Godiva and managed to not buy anything, which was an accomplishment.
She took us to Nami, which despite being in my own city I’d never gone to but had delicious Japanese food.
I’ve also been playing more Disgaea, hence my general low presence in most places. I almost fucked myself over in an item world but managed to survive ten floors and get out, and the exp points were worth the time.
Now that I’ve played more of it the game really does remind me of a cross between fire emblem and Pokémon mystery dungeon, though it’s two years older than even the original titles of the latter series. Perhaps they were inspired by it; some of the formatting is similar.

Welp, on my PSNow account, downloading games I can play offline. So far I have:
- Disgaea 5 (I like Disgaea)
- Tales of Zestiria (See why it's popular, plus I enjoy the Tales series)
- Akiba's Beat (Looks interesting, plus I like how it looks similar to some other games. I think it's due to being XSEED for developer?)
- Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed
- Asdivine Hearts
Games I am considering:
- Dark Cloud (Main guy looks like inspiration came from Link)
- BlazBlue Central Fiction
- BlazBlue Chronophantasma Extend
- Grim Fandago Remastered (Seen on some recommended videos and it looks interesting)
- Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force
- Exist Archive: The Other Side of the Sky
- Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life (I like Harvest Moon series and have played the Female version of this)
- Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland
- Omega Quintet
- Wild Arms 3 (I have played Wild Arms 4)
- Rogue Galaxy
- Hollow Knight (It looks cute!)
- Ark the Lad
Games I WANT to play but am too much of a chicken to play:
- Prey
- The Evil Within
- Until Dawn
(I have watched these on YouTube strangely yet just can't seem to grow a backbone to play)
I am REALLY picky when it comes to games yet also seem to have no taste. The images/plot have to pretty much peak my interest for me to want to play. I don't really like horror since I am easily scared and pretty much hate first person shooter games az well as any kind of racing game, I really prefer RPGs.
Does anyone have some recommendations or game suggestions? I'm looking to download to play offline since I share the Wifi with two others.

Well I done goofed.
I know I answered an ask from @mrnarfin today from the video game asks, but I must have answered it privately? I don’t know where it went 😓 Anyway, I’ll answer again, and try to remember what I said. 3. Best game you’ve ever played Puppeteer. It has the right amount of plot, wit, style, and charm. 8. Best soundtrack Legend of Zelda: breath of the wild. The largely piano based sound design makes for a sincere feeling experience. 17. What game do you never tell people you play? The Disgaea series. It’s not embarrassing or anything, it’s just difficult to explain it’s charm. 19. What game do you think deserves a revival? Dark cloud. It’s sort of a world building game where everything is gone and your need to replace structures. Level design games became big recently, so I think it’d be well received. 23. Biggest disappointment you had in gaming. Essentially anytime development on a game was delayed and released for the next gaming console. My examples were Kingdom Hearts 3 and LOZ: Twilight Princess.

Top 100 Role-Playing Games of All Time
The latest issue of the magazine Game Informer has an impressive size list with the best role-playing games in the history of the game industry. In the 290th issue of the magazine they collected the best of their best, assigning each game a certain place.
As it became known GameNews, the list was made on the basis of the subjective opinion of the editorial board. It included projects such as The Witcher, Mass Effect, Fallout, Diablo, Everquest, Final Fantasy and other legendary games. However, the editorial board of the magazine was put first by The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Despite criticism of the fifth part of the game Bethesda Game Studios, as of November 2016, the game sold more than 30 million copies. This figure does not include the sale of the reissue Skyrim Special Edition, as well as not yet released version of the game for Nintendo Switch. The game received 9.4 points from the critics of the gaming industry and was warmly received by gamers, and also received the title of "Games of the Year" at VGA 2011 and the Golden Joystick Awards 2012.
In the top ten games, as it became known GameNews, put such games as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Mass Effect 2, Diablo II, World of Warcraft, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. It should be noted that in addition to Skyrim, the list also includes two previous parts of the series, Morrowind and Oblivion. However, they were closer to the middle of the list.

So I dug out my PS2 and hooked it up
What game should I play first?
Persona 4 Disgaea Dragon Quest VIII Dark Cloud 2 Shadow Hearts: From the New World
I played through Dark Cloud and Dragon Quest already, and almost beat Shadow Hearts, but that was YEARS ago. I only played a tiny bit of Persona before I got my 360, and I know it’s really popular, never played Disgaea though and only remember people used to talk about it a lot.
Opinions?

The Weekender: Home Edition
It’s felt like a very busy week - plenty of news to write-up, and I’ve been experimenting with a wider range of topics and angles to see what happens as there’s not as much to review at the moment. Got a few more things in the pipeline for February, but expect a more conservative approach from me as we approach the beginning of March as the new team will likely be in place by then and I’ll need to facilitate a formal handover.
Meanwhile, in the world of mobile games...
New App Releases
Disgaea 1 (iOS & Android)
The Disgaea series is very well regarded as far as tactical JRPGs are concerned. Over-the-top, bonkers, but also featuring some quite clever twists on the genre that has even won fans amongst western audiences. If you like Final Fantasy Tactics but felt there wasn’t enough anime in it to make it pop, then this series is for you.
Luckily, you can now travel back in time to experience the birth of this series with the complete edition of the first game, now available on iOS and Android. Buyer beware though - NIS have taken a page out of Square’s book and are charging $32.99 for the game. Hopefully you save up that pocket money this month.

Spelltower+ (iOS Universal)
I’m not even sure Pocket Tactics existed when this game was first released back in 2011, but we do have a lot of time for Zach Gage and his slightly off-kilter creations. This was a word-puzzle game, but one that involved tumbling towers of letters and modifiers and other unique elements not often seen in this genre.
If you never played this game the first time around, then now’s a great time to start with the ‘+’ edition, which is mainly about making it work better on modern devices (it has been nearly a decade, after all) but it does have 11 game modes to keep you occupied. It’s an ad-supported free-to-play game with a $5 unlock to remove them.

Top free-to-play offerings that caught our eye:
Magic: Manastrike is a more traditional lane-based auto-battler that seems surprisingly tactical and obviously as that MtG sheen to it. Available on iOS and Android.
Might & Magic: Chess Royale - is meant to be some kind of bizarre hybrid of Auto Chess and Battle Royale. It looks bonkers, and we’ve got someone having a proper look at it as we speak. iOS & Android.
Dungeon Faster - the art-style reminds me of Meteorfall, and bills itself as a “fast-play” rogue-like card game. Offline mode and available on iOS and Android.
App News & Updates
We quite liked Grimvalor when we originally reviewed it, so we’re pleased to learn that the dev team are working on an update that not only localises the game into eight new languages, but also includes a New Game+ mode as well. They’re currently looking for Beta testers, and you can email them here if you want to take part. This news comes via the TouchArcade forums.

Arnold Rauers, fresh off the release of his newest Tinytouchtales creation Maze Machina, has just released a breakdown of how the first two weeks went. Some interesting insights to be gleaned here, including:
The game was developed in about a year with a three-man team doing part-time work.
Miracle Merchant, TTT’s last game, was released in August 2017 and the app store has changed a lot since then.
Maze Machina has brought a revenue of $14,000 in the first two weeks, 99% of it from iOS. This is compared to Miracle Merchant’s $40,000 in the same period (~35%)
The experience has led Rauers to the conclusion that he needs to fundamentally change the way he sells his games.
It paints a bit of a bleak picture for premium mobile games made by small developers, but we’re glad Mr. Rauers isn’t totally disillusioned by the experience. We’d hate to see him stop making great games.
While we’re talking about the business of making mobile games, PocketGamer.biz have posted an interesting breakdown of top app performers for the week January 12th - 18th. It breaks down the top ten apps by Downloads, Active Users and Consumer Spend, and it’s interesting to see which games are succeeding in which category. PUBG Mobile had the most people playing it, but the Honour of Kings player base spent the most money.
Book of Demons is a rather interesting desktop game that combines dungeon-crawling with deck-building, and it’s being brought to tablet after a year of delighting PC players. The developers are currently looking for beta testers for the Tablet Edition, if you’re interested in checking it out. Again, this news comes via the TouchArcade forums.

Last but not least, if you’re a fan of Pokemon and the Pokemon ecosystem, you might be excited to learn that Nintendo have announced the pricing and launch features for their planned Pokemon Home hub service that will in theory connect all of your Pokemon games together via the cloud. It will be coming to mobile and the Nintendo Switch, although some features will be unique to specific platforms.
There’s also a free and a ‘Premium Plan’ option, with that latter scaling from $2.99 a month up to $15.99 for the year. You can read more about it on the official website.
App Sales
It’s a bit of a dry week for app sales, although all of the Holy Potatoes! games are discounted again to their Christmas 2019 price of $1.99. This only on iOS sadly; what HP! games are on Android (which is not all of them) are still full price.
Seen anything else you liked? Played any of the above? Let us know in the comments!

Played a bit more Disgaea today!
As grid style turn based combat goes, I do prefer fire emblem, but that’s not to say the game is bad. I genuinely love the meta humor and the characters, and the one thing about the combat system I prefer over FE is the opportunity to trigger attack combos with three or more characters at once if you play your cards right.
The one thing that annoys me is that unlike FE, when you check an enemy’s range it only factors in their movement range, not the range of their attacks. This bit me in the ass a few times in battles, because it’s a) unclear b) different from what I’m used to which admittedly isn’t the game’s fault but also see a.
Also, I freely admit I have only the vaguest understanding of how the stats work, but so far that hasn’t seemed to matter.
