I just got done watching this video and... it just hit me that Naughty Dog era Cortex was literally made to be a villain you point and laugh at. AND IT'S REFLECTED IN CORTEX'S BACKSTORY.

What did Cortex's family force Cortex to do as a child? Dress up like a clown and perform in front of an audience, where he was likely pointed and laughed at.

As someone who deeply loves this character, I feel so bad for Cortex! And that's where Cortex's trademark sympathy factor comes in. It's not Cortex if you don't feel a little bad for him. Cortex is a monster, but the universe is so unbelievably cruel to him, you can't help but feel your heart go out to him.

I love Cortex so damn much, man. No matter what you think of the different Crash games, Cortex has always been a delight.

The Catbat comic was a nice little treat for the upcoming Crash Team Rumble game, but I especially love the addition of this particular character.

Like up until the ending slide show in Crash 4, I don't think there was anything to indicate Cortex's robotic scientists weren't anything but mindless automatons that did his bidding (and also end up as cannon fodder during.) The slide show implied they had to do something while Cortex was away post-final battle, which could either be them fulfilling their commands to keep themselves busy (or something) or the first signs of sentience and a life beyond their creator.

So you got one of the Lab Assistants who doesn't seem to work for Cortex. Or maybe he does and he has a rock gig in secret. Whatever the case is, there are signs of a free man here, one who grew beyond his programming and doesn't have to live a degrading, butt monkey existence as Cortex's minion. One who could be altruistic and help those in need.

Even the outfit he wears evokes the many, many costumes the Lab Assistants have donned over the games. They were always situational and appropriate to wherever Cortex sent them, but this rock n' roll look though? It's all his. This is his personal identity and what he can claim to call his own. Cortex did not choose this, HE did. I hope Rock n' Roll Lab Assistant Guy continues to explore his identity (find a name, continue to help people and rock out, etc.)

I don't know if Catbat told him the truth of their origin. If so, then they're with good company because he understands, and oh MAN, I really want to do fanart of these two buddies being good friends (or more? Catbat/Rock n' Roll LA pairing? Sure, why not?)

Catbat has such a great potential if Toys For Bob plays their cards right. Because yeah, there really isn't a Cortex science experiment who carried the kind of emotional baggage the way they do. None of the Bandicoots are as burdened with angst about the whole thing. Crash is more than willing to forgive and embrace Cortex because he is a cinnamon roll and I bet he just wants to reconcile with his dad. Coco has healthy outlets when she isn't kicking Cortex's ass through engineering and gaming, as well as a loving sibling bond with her brother. Prime!Tawna? ...Who knows. Crunch? ...That character is so goddamn useless he's not worth talking about here (I'm sorry, Crunch was a better character when he was an evil rival to Crash. You strip that off of him and what does he contribute?) But I digress.

What I'm saying is, I dig Catbat's background, because it continues where Crash 4 took off by creating pathos and character exploration instead of ha ha goofy character and dumb 2005-era Dreamworks humor (god, post-CNK games before the revival era really flattened these characters into senseless clowns.) Like I don't know if Catbat is even on Crash's side, or they happen to want to work together because of common goals. We'll see, I guess!

If a hypothetical Crash 5 happens and Catbat returns, I would genuinely love to see them returning, with an even more greater focus on their revenge against Cortex. But I'm getting ahead of myself; let's see how they do in Rumble first.

Apparently we'll be getting snippets of lore like these throughout Rumble's updates, and I am genuinely looking forward to them expanding the world built by Crash 4.

Look man, I'm not saying Crash Bandicoot has the deepest lore, but seeing little things like these add so much.

Emperor Velo x Cortex, how would they treat each other? ;O

Yay an excuse to talk about this ship! I think there would be friction between them since they both have huge egos. And I feel like Velo has some animosity towards Cortex with how in the CNK Team Cortex true end he refuses to give him his scepter at first, compared to how graciously he surrendered with Team Bandicoot. Velo may also treat Cortex as beneath him since he looks down on earthlings generally, but maybe he gained some begrudging respect for him since Cortex did beat him in a race twice.

But also, I think maybe the two can relate in a way. I imagine that with true Velo, he is a runt in his royal family and might have been picked on from his youth because of this (but not anymore since he has built himself up to become a respected and feared ruler). And with Cortex, there’s the abusive past he had in the circus from the initial Crash pitch. So I think they can bond gradually when they learn about each other’s pasts. For example, it can start with Velo asking why Cortex hates clowns from his derogatory words towards Big Norm. And then Cortex explains talking about his past, and it goes from there.

I have this alternate scenario I like to imagine too where the fake Velo is real, or somehow an alternate form of small Velo that he can only maintain for limited periods of time. And in that case Cortex is super intimidated by Velo, while Velo just finds Cortex amusing and fun to toy with. But also in this scenario, Velo will warm up to Cortex as a person gradually, and Cortex eventually gives in and accepts being Velo’s toy (it's not so bad since Velo pampers Cortex nicely when they are together).

Mulling.AU (Crash bandicoot)

History

Cortex is the child of the clowns of traveling circus. He was thrown out of a running train in infancy, and so he died. But the soul, that didn't rest, returned back to the dead body and captured it. He became a mulling, in Scandinavian mythology - these are the babies of deceased children who were carried out to snow to kill them. Their restless souls persecuted their mothers and tortured to death.

All his life, Doctor grew up mainly as a human being, his soul could not completely take over the body, which is why he looks initially disproportionate. In order for the soul to prevail, the body had to be cooled. The more it freezes, the further the stage of metamorphosis develops. It is not visible at all until about -20C°, but after the appearance of severe and acute frost and temperatures below this one, his body begins to gradually change. All this will happen until the body dies and the soul completely takes over it (which happened).

At the 106% ending, we find out that he was thrown into a dimension in which there were only snowy mountains. He wandered in this dimension for a long time, which is why he managed to freeze very much. He was able to get out, but before that he froze to death.

Next, we are interested in the moment when Tropy and FemTropy already see him like this. The rest of the story will focus largely on their relationship. (There will be also a so-called "Guide", i.e. character outside the canonical characters, who is aware of all events and should help Tropy see Cortex).

Since the Cortex is already physically dead, he cannot return to his original phase. But, since he has warmed up, he returns to the previous phase. Since this is a long process, we can say that this interphase variant is his "statics".

Of course, Doctor became more calm and restrained not only because of the cold and the difficult path he had traveled. He knows how to handle his abilities, but sometimes he gives out terrible things, because he has not fully learned to control some emotions.

In fact, he himself didn't know (didn't remember) his story for a long time, and only the cold could remind him of his purpose - revenge. There is one problem - he doesn't know where his parents are or if they are alive at all.

Later, however, the heroe will realize that now he lives not only for revenge, and just the same he shouldn't end his life like this. By this point, he will have achieved his goal, but another feature will come into force, that he lived not only for this, but also his attachment to Tropy doesn't allow him to leave his life.

Features

In addition to all the above, he has the peculiarity that he distorts any technique both in front of eyes and as a consequence. Photographs, for example, can reveal some of his true nature.

Mirrors also sometimes show his real appearance, but Doctor can influence this.

Also, his skin has become paler, and he is also as cold as Tropy.

Sometimes in "static" he can pass through walls, but this is more of a fourth phase possibility, so it's better to beware when he looks/passes through walls.

He can lift objects and things (and people) into the air, but it is also mainly a manifestation of the fourth phase (also not safe for others).

He always can transform into an owl, and he is often haunted by child's crying (his own (from mulling)). He has the ability to drive people crazy with his gaze and baby crying. Or at least scare them away.

He often has the same dream: a woman hanging from a large bare tree in the middle of the desert snows. He didn't see that in real life. He believes that this is either a call to action or an indicator that his mother has already hanged herself.

His presence is full of all sorts of weird chips that he cannot always control, for example, sometimes silent or absolutely static walking (only legs), his eyes glow in the dark and often until the light is turned on he will look exactly at you, outside the owl shape he can turn his head a large number of degrees, has good flexibility, though rarely uses it.

The further the phase goes, the higher he gets. In the last phase, he is about the size of a Tropy, but in "static" he is shoulder-high for Tropy.

He has gray hair.

In "static" his voice is a little hoarse, including from the fact that he started smoking, and he also speaks a little less often.
