Mary Astor and John Barrymore in Beau Brummel (Harry Beaumont, 1924) Cast: John Barrymore, Mary Astor, Willard Louis, Carmel Myers, Irene Rich, Alec B. Francis, William Humphrey, Richard Tucker, George Beranger. Screenplay: Dorothy Farnum, based on a play by Clyde Fitch. Cinematography: David Abel. Film editing: Howard Bretherton This slow, stagy, and occasionally cheesy-looking costume drama was the film that lured John Barrymore away from Broadway to Hollywood. It's about the rise and fall of George Bryan Brummel (usually spelled with two l's) in the court of the Prince of Wales, later Prince Regent and then George IV. Barrymore gets to load on the old age makeup -- which makes him look startlingly like his brother, Lionel -- as the film goes on. The supporting cast plays a gaggle of semihistorical figures who are mostly there for atmosphere; I was surprised, for example, to discover that the rather ordinary fellow (George Beranger) limping around in the background was supposed to be Lord Byron. None of the film's history can be trusted, of course, so there's really not much to be said about it other than that Barrymore chews the scenery with aplomb and that the 18-year-old Mary Astor is pleasant to look at.

Someone desperately needs to do something about the John André wikipedia article because it's getting all its information from biographies of Benedict Arnold, very basic and not necessarily accurate online articles, and once Sargent. (It has Flexner in the "works cited" section but since there are no footnotes that reference Flexner I'm not sure it counts as a "works cited".) Also the "Further Reading" consists entirely of the William Sterne Randall biography of Benedict Arnold and a book by Adele Gutman Nathan, and I'm not sure if it's the André book by her that I've read or a different one, but the one I read sucked. No Hatch, no Ronald (who is problematic but valuable, unfortunately), not even Tillotson. Heck, not even Van Doren. Consequently the information about most of his life is sparse, uncited (and has [citation needed] in a couple spots where YOU'D HAVE HAD A CITATION IF YOU USED A BETTER SOURCE), and often just slightly off.
Also, re the Benedict Arnold biographies, I don't care if the authors are real historians, you can't just blindly trust what people say when they're writing about someone or something that isn't the specific focus of their book - I've seen a very highly regarded art historian think the folk tale type "midwife to the fairies" (which is about a human who gets called out to help a fairy give birth) is the same as "the fairies' midwife" in Mercutio's speech in Romeo and Juliet (who is an actual fairy) and I've seen so many people who aren't experts in the pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood specifically claim that Elizabeth Siddal died of tuberculosis that she caught while posing for Millais's painting of Ophelia it's not even funny (I don't have time to explain everything that's wrong with this). And then there was the historian who claimed that the term the "Gilded Age" was a later invention by people who were romanticizing the time period, because whatever actual serious newspaper that quoted her decided that if you were going to ask a historian about the late 19th century, hitting up someone who specialized in the Viking era was good enough. Though why she made shit up instead of looking it up or telling them to ask someone who cared about years later than, like, 1100 is a mystery. (The "Gilded Age" is from an 1873 satirical novel by Mark Twain and it was never complimentary because things that are gilded have a thin layer of gold on top but underneath are made of something that isn't valuable. I literally learned this in high school.)
Also whoever wrote the sentence about possibly the reason Clyde Fitch's play about André wasn't a success was because it portrayed him as a sympathetic character knows so little about how people saw André that they shouldn't be allowed to edit his wikipedia page. I don't care if that's also what the source they're quoting claims, it's a laughably stupid theory, especially for a play in 1905, unless maybe the first and only performance took place at the 125th Annual Meeting of the Rabid John Paulding Fanboys' Club.

Picked up the fab compilation pictured above on a recommendation from our friends at Uncut Magazine, and with it being Black History Month, it made perfect sense to feature tracks from it on tonight’s episode. A couple, four, tracks come from one of the annual music issues that the Oxford American magazine curates, often featuring artists from a particular state, in this case Alabama. A pretty strong episode if we’re tooting our own horn, but you of course are the judge...

“The Storers”
December 11, 1906
Roosevelt doffs his hat, having nailed a man and woman into a crate with labels 'To Private Life', 'Handle With Care', and 'Politics (International)'.
The caption reads “'The Woman in the Case' - A closed incident”
This is a reference to the Clyde Fitch play. Mr. and Mrs. Storer had claimed credit for Roosevelt's appointment as Assistant Navy Secretary, which set him on his way towards the presidency.

The Staircase Scene - Sapho
Tumblr media
In 1900, English actress Olga Nethersole created a play based on Alphonse Daudet's 1884 novel Sapho, aiming to tell the story from the point of view of the novel's female lead.
A few year prior she had gotten in touch with American playwright Clyde Fitch, who adapted the novel and some scenes from the 1885 play into what she desired. Aside from just starring in the titular role of Fanny LeGrand, she was also the plays' producer and director. The play opens in New York, and it was certainly seen as scandalous, (morally corrupt even,) depicting a seductive woman who has affairs with men that she isn't married to. It was one scene in particular however, that made certain audience members wholly offended.
Imagine this scandalous scene, in a time where even showing a kiss was going to far; Fanny is carried up a flight of stairs by her romantic interest Jean Gaussin, that she had only just met, blatantly showing her eagerness to see what will happen once they get to the top.
Tumblr media
So anyways, she gets arrested for public indecency.
Olga Nethersole, her co-star and two managers are arrested on the order of questionable New York District Attorney, Asa Bird Gardiner on February 21st, 1900.
New York was obsessed with the drama, and for weeks people waited in anticipation for what would come from this. Finally, during a two day trial, the judge said that the actors are "not the guardians of the morals of this community"
And after 15 minutes, the jury finds Olga Nethersole innocent and "Sapho" opens right the hell back up.
Tumblr media
Look at her !!! look at how cool she is!!! AAAA
I find Olga Nethersole to be an absolutely admirable and amazing woman. I love Fanny LeGrand, and I love that Nethersole loved her too, enough to give her the story she deserved. My intention is to follow her lead and reclaim stories about women and minority groups. I do like old things, but most of the old things that have lasted are from the perspective of rich white men. Hell if I let that be the only history we get.
(yesss i did make that drawing up there i think its very cute)

W. Clyde Fitch, A Father of the American Stage by Susan Zehnder, Education Director
Playwright William Clyde Fitch once said he “would rather be misunderstood than lose his independence” and embraced his individualism. As a gay man living at the turn of the twentieth century, Fitch had always lived the life he wanted to, often going against established expectations.
Born in Elmira in 1865, Fitch grew up in Schenectady. His father, William G. Fitch was a former captain in the Union army during the Civil War, and his mother was a vivacious southern belle. Clyde, as he was known, was their only child and he showed an early ability to tell amusing stories and entertain others. (READ MORE)

Happy Gay Pride Weekend!
Around the turn of the 20th century, Clyde Fitch was the most popular playwright on Broadway.  At one point, he had an unheard of five shows running at the same time!  Fitch suffered from ill health for most of his life and was only 44 when he died in France in 1909; he rests in Woodlawn Cemetery’s Wintergreen plot.
Tumblr media
The never-married Fitch was known as a “dandy” in his day and going by his written correspondence it’s probable he had a brief affair with Oscar Wilde. He was also good (platonic) friends with Edith Wharton. His literary agent was lesbian Elisabeth Marbury who openly lived for decades with her partner Elsie DeWolfe.
Elisabeth Marbury also rests in Woodlawn; I’ve blogged about her before: https://lost-in-woodlawn.tumblr.com/post/162243799522/happy-pride-weekend-elisabeth-bessy-marbury
