People like doing this thing with oldtimey doctor who companions- both ones written as historical and those who were Contemporary To Their Time But Historical To Us- with much more modern attitudes on various things and i absolutely exactly get why and also often do that but also it can sometimes undermine a fun aspect of having them, yknow, adjust and react to cultures and things in their travels, which, yknow, is what they're for. but also it undermines the fun of having them completely not culturally know or get anything about a subject but rapidly become enthusiastically supportive! remember when Leela had only known about the existence of capitalism for two days and was immediately down to smash it, repeatedly, so much so that in her 1.5 seasons run she participated in like 3 revolutions. It's such a venue for characterization too.

Do Ian and Barbara *get* neopronouns at first? no but they're openminded and educated people, and a combination of Listening And Learning with getting thoughtful about history and linguistics, they're now almost obnoxiously supportive allies and work hard on keeping gender neutral language in the classroom after they get home. Jo literally becomes an enviromentalist hippie activist slowly during her seasons but she also picks up the doctor's antimilitarism- don't forget she wanted to be a unit agent.

It's like the #transrights of the brigadier looking at the regenerations of the doctor in the same place and going "well as long as he assists unit he can wear whatever face he wants."

of course we want to write stuff we love as being openly inclusive to us and we should! it's great! but considering how characters are affected by the ideas of their time as an act of explicit characterization, as fitting their distinct personalities and thinking styles, can enhance that, not detract from it. Do Ben and Polly get even a quarter of the doctor's microlabels of course not. and sometimes it can cause conflict! but also you dont have to understand autism- OR REGENERATION, again, i'm using these two cuz power of the daleks is so so literally about this- to be a good friend.
