Similar to Ballston Beach, Coast Guard Beach in Eastham is different every time I go out. I read that the increase in the ocean's volume is multi-factored. The glacial meltwater affects it. Also, the expansion that happens to all things as they heat plays a part. So, it's more water that takes up more space. This ocean rise is responsible for increased wave strength as George's Bank is less effective in diminishing their power when they're farther above the shelf. The dune supposedly washes away at 3 ft per year in this location. W H A T S. M Y. N A M E Yesterday I asked you all to guess what this painting is called. I had such a great response so thank you to everyone who took a guess. There were some very very close guesses and some really imaginative and great suggestions…I will definitely be making a note of some of them! Keep your eyes peeled for new work perhaps named from your suggestion. This piece is called “Destructive Waves”. As some of you may know much of my work centres around our environment, how we impact our planet through our movements and behaviours and how this affects our climate. Destructive Waves was made to raise awareness of the erosion caused by the sea on coastal zones and how over the years this has been accelerated by climate change. After reading a paper on “Technologies for Climate Change Adaptation: Coastal Erosion and Flooding” it inspired my to create this piece. (Paper written by Matthew M. Linham & Robert J. Coastal erosion and coastal flooding is a problem affecting many parts of the world, and with climate change, it looks like this trend is only going to accelerate. In Lagos, we took steps to tackle this issue nearly 15 years ago to save Victoria Island which was under an imminent threat of severe flooding and erosion, and currently looking at cost effective solutions with the State on how to tackle this issue in areas still at risk. The article below covers the issue and the cost in the US: "The center recently issued a study concluding that by 2040, building sea walls for storm surge protection for U.S. coastal cities with more than 25,000 residents will require at least $42 billion. The sea is busy swallowing up ancestral lands, cultures, livelihoods and dreams. Blekusu, a shy community that lies near Keta was hit by tidal waves that displaced 1,500 people in one night. There were similar incidents all across the coasts of West Africa. Joseph Adator (72) a resident of Blekusu had just been discharged from the Keta Hospital for heart related problems with a referral letter to 37 Military Hospital in Accra. I had no idea how bad his condition was when he joined the wife and daughters for a portrait in the classroom where they were about to spend the night. In the morning, I had to become his ambulance, driving him as fast as I could so he wouldn’t die from the heart attack he’d suffered in the night. His son Emmanuel and daughter Rejoice jumped into my car to accompany their dad, making his condition their priority in spite of their own personal headaches. Rejoice had lost her school uniform to the sea and needed to get money for school fees lest she can’t write her exams. Everybody says they lost their money to the sea. Her brother Emmanuel’s headache is quite different. His pregnant wife is a week overdue and could go into labour very soon. As we dashed off to Accra, I heard him telling the wife on the phone: “So, if you were to deliver today, who will take care of you in this chaos? Where will you stay? You can’t sleep in those classrooms with the fresh baby can you?” To some, the Paris Agreement is just another ego game. To Africa, it literally is about life and death.
