Just wanted to clip out a scene from one of my favourite films, 神探 | MAD DETECTIVE (Johnnie To & Wai Ka-Fai, 2007).
Without giving anything away - the titular character of the film is an ex-police detective who has the power to see someone's "inner personality". How the film portrays this is by having one actor play a character - but when the detective looks at this character, he sees that character's "personality", who is played by a completely different actor. What I love is that the film pulls the audience straight into this concept with basically no exposition. Here's the best example:
It always amazed me because I had never seen anything like it before and never really did again...until I got to THINKING OUT LOUD. I gasped at the episode's ending because, I mean, look!!
#hk tag#hong kong cinema#mad detective#神探#johnnie to#wai ka-fai#in9#inside no 9#inside no. 9#thinking out loud#so what brought this on was rewatching Walled In on the flight back#whenever i watch any hk stuff i tend to get into an hk-mood/thought process (does that even make sense?)#and this was a parallel i wanted to mention for a while#when i first watched the film that scene was something i always loved telling people about (the whole film is like this btw)#anyway i'm also backtracking a bit bc the simon says posts will prob need a bit more thought/planning#vagueeyes.pdf#edit: how could i forget that wai ka-fai codirected it??

Re the Blake/Ryan melodrama, they are as much of a nuisance as the Harry Markles. I managed to glean the following around blog etc. take with helpings of salt. Rumour has it that Ryan is the bigger narcissist of the two and is the source of the trouble and chaos. This is not a man who is contented with life’s bountiful offerings, oh no, he wants bigger, better, faster, younger, more and more of everything. Nothing wrong with ambition, but not at the expense of others.
In the early OOs he was engaged for four years!! to a fellow Canadian songwriter and musician Alanis Morrette (Jagged Little Pill). She was two years older than him, and they were together at a time when she was the Canadian star. (Snark) She was with him through his plastic surgeries so that’s true love right there. She was more famous of the two, and I guess that was an issue for him. But when they broke their engagement in 08 he had a jump off ready and married Scarlett Johanssen later that same year. The timeline is not clear on that relationship, so there may have been some overlap. He was 31 and she was 23.
He starred in the Green Lantern with Blake in 2010, they shot the movie in 09. Anyways there were nasty rumours that Ryan and Blake had an affair whilst Scarlett was pregnant and she lost the baby due to the stress. They divorced in 2010 and the new couple got married in 2011. She’s 11 years younger than him. She immediately went to work having four babies in total. Rumours are that he was very controlling and manipulative and Blake likes or is blind to his manipulations.
Enter Taylor at some point, who reportedly saw his techniques, as one manipulator to another, and they reportedly do not get along. She tries to enlighten Blake but hey it’s not her marriage. Enter Jason Baldoni who was rumoured to have a codirecting job lined up with Scarlet Johansen which apparently Ryan wanted to scupper so he actively encouraged and manipulated Blake into the SA lawsuit, convincing her it was a good idea. And here we are.
BTW Scarlet has a movie showing at Cannes this year which she directed, so I guess that project went ahead with another director and production company. By all accounts she’s happily married with 2 kids, a boy with Jost, a girl with her ex, a French art dealer. Alanis married a fellow musician and had three kids in her early 40s. These two women dealt with whatever chaos he left in his wake and managed to move forward. My sympathies to Blake. She’s going to choose family over friendship, as would anyone. Who knows if the marriage will survive. If it doesn’t I bet his next partner/wife will be at least 20 years younger than him, easily.
If you follow celebs, or even just the Perez Hilton side of celebrity gossip, none of this is new information. 🤣
You didn’t mention it in your recap, but did you find out what kind of wedding Ryan and Blake had? In case it didn’t come up - it was a plantation wedding. Yes, plantation weddings weren’t as awful back in 2012 like they are now, but there was still a lot of criticism for that choice then, and it keeps coming up for them over and over throughout the years.
If anyone doesn’t understand how a plantation wedding can be so horrific, think about it like this — plantations are to the US as concentration camps are to Europe. You wouldn’t have a big ol’ wedding or party celebration at Auschwitz, right?
I think it’s great you feel sympathy for Blake, but not a lot of us do. It takes two to tango, after all.

I feel like a lot of the cast/crew don’t like Courtney. She’s been in less and less videos, has directed in forever (was surprised she didn’t codirect and ep of bitcity) and doesn’t seem to be part of any of the fan favorite dynamics/have great chemistry with anyone in the cast. She just brings up Shayne or the marriage every chance she gets now. She doesn’t seem to be friends with anyone outside of filming unless Shayne is involved. She seems like an overall self absorbed mean girl
You do not know Court. You do not know them outside of what you see in videos. They are a full time employee. They have way more to do than just be in videos.
This is parasocial as all get out, and Court has expressed repeatedly that she does not want to just be "Shayne's Wife" so she is not 'just bringing up the marriage every chance she gets' unless it's to point out that they want people to stop making her Shayne's Wife.
You have no idea what goes on behind the scenes at all and to act like you do is very concerning. I think you should take a step back and re-evaluate why you think that you know Court and their life better than they and their friends do, because you don't. You know what you see through a screen and that is all.

Warfare is, I daresay, the most effective antiwar film I've ever seen. It's also a movie I don't want to see again for a bit, but gritting my teeth I have to hand it to Alex Garland: he knows how to make a fantastic movie.
The film itself was only codirected by Garland, the other half of the team for this one is former Navy SEAL Ray Mendoza, who tells the story of (a small section of) the battle of Ramadi, specifically the part he actually fought in.
Prompted in part by inquiries by another member of SEAL Team 5 who lost multiple limbs in the battle and lost all memory of the engagement, Mendoza answers the "you don't know what it's like to come under fire" cliche by putting you in there, in the process making a film that makes Black Hawk Down look like a cakewalk.
Warefare is fantastic. The sound design is some of the best in cinema, the small arms fire is dead-on realistic (rectifying one of Garland's more minor sins from Civil War) and every piece of audio design is completely diegetic, immersing the audience even further into the moment to the point that I jumped and ducked during an IED blast.
It's a film wholly devoted to putting you in combat, and this I think amplifies the antiwar messaged purely by showing you how much War Is Bad To Be In. There is no glory in combat, only blood and screaming as your squadmate begs you to make the pain stop and HQ refuses to send help. No movie has been so effective at making me hope for instant death if I get shot.
Despite all this, the larger conversation I've seen about this online is just people calling it the "A24 Propaganda Film," a read that I feel cannot be further from the truth. Nothing in this film makes any death in this movie a noble sacrifice, nor does is lionize dying for your country in a remote sandbox forever war. It doesn't even make the SEALs look cool, to the point that I spent a nonzero amount of the film wondering when the SEALs would show up until I realized I was watching the SEALs themselves this whole time get blown up by grenades.
The only real sign that the film glorifies anything I saw was my producer commenting that some of the guns in the film were "Badass" as we left the theater. Which is to say that the film does its very best to lay the bare facts of how much war sucks at its audience's feet. This is Mendoza telling a story about what happened to him as true to life as he could get, and it pulls no punches about the reality and brutality of war. If you need to be hand-held through further moralization, I hear the Minecraft Movie is a smash hit.
This is an Alex Garland film though, and so at the very end there are two scenes I can identify in which he does set up his soapbox, but in a way sophisticated enough to drive home the point without starting a sermon.
As the movie ends, the family whose house the SEALs invaded come out to observe the blood rubble and bodies they're left to deal with in the wake of the battle. Directly after, we see a shot of the empty street SEAL Team 5 fled from slowly fill with insurgents filtering out from the shadows, forming a force just as strong as they were before.
I left the film pleasantly surprised at Garland's return to form. It's a film that stuck with me, for reasons I did not expect. A hard watch, one I won't repeat for a hot second, but nonetheless one worth watching. Not that I've forgiven Garland for Civil War, mind you.

The Frozen North (1922) Buster Keaton
The Frozen North is a comic western by Buster Keaton codirected with Edward F. Cline. The film parodies the heroic cowboy character that the star of westerns, William S. Hart, played in his films.

The production of The Frozen North followed the scandal that had ousted Fatty Arbuckle from the film industry. While Keaton had publicly supported his friend's innocence, Hart had been among his greatest and most ardent detractors. It was Arbuckle who came up with the idea of making a film in which Hart would be portrayed as a bully, thief, and violent man, and since he could not do so it was Keaton who wrote, produced, directed, and starred in The Frozen North .
After the film's release, William S. Hart did not address Keaton again for several years. The parody of the western star began as early as the first scenes, when Buster cut out his silhouette from the advertising poster (00:58); but the scene that infuriated Harts was the one in which Buster Keaton cries with glycerin tears (02:29) , a trick Hart often used in his films.
In The Frozen North Keaton parodies Erich Von Stroheim in Foolish Wifes (15:12), but unlike S. Hart, Von Stroheim took great pleasure in seeing himself imitated by Keaton.
Also in this film, as in his best work, Keaton plays on the contrast of true and false, dream and reality, and the misuse of objects as when he uses guitars as snowshoes or snowshoes as tennis rackets.
