JAZZ AGE SISTER ACT DOLLY SISTERS ORIGINAL 1920S SHOWGIRLS
French vaudeville photograph featuring Rosie Dolly and Jenny Dolly, known professionally as the Dolly Sisters. The Hungarian-American identical twins were dancers, singers and actresses popular in vaudeville and theatre during the 1910s and 1920s. Both of the sisters also appeared in two silent films. With towering plumage in their headdresses, sparkling fringed costumes, and a flirtatious attitude, these two sisters are the picture of Jazz Age style!
Dolly Sisters:Rosie Dolly (October 25, 1892 - February 1, 1970) and Jenny Dolly (October 25, 1892 - June 1, 1941), known professionally as (the) Dolly Sisters, were Hungarian-American identical twin dancers, singers and actresses, popular in vaudeville and theatre during the 1910s and 1920s. Both sisters also appeared in two silent films. The sisters, Rózsika Deutsch (later known as Rose or Rosie) and Janka Deutsch (later known as Yancsi or Jenny), were born on October 24, 1892, in Balassagyarmat, Hungary. Their parents were Julius (born Gyula Deutsch, c. 1865) and Margaret Deutsch (born Margit Weisz, c. 1874). Julius and son Istvan (later known as Edward, born March 31, 1898) emigrated to the United States in October 1904; the twins and their mother arrived May 1905. As children, the sisters trained as dancers and began earning money in beer halls as early as 1907. Barred for being under age by the New York City stage, they toured the Orpheum Circuit until 1909 when they debuted on the Keith Vaudeville Circuit. The following year, they appeared in the stage production of The Echo. In 1911, Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. signed them to appear in his Ziegfeld Follies for two seasons. Their act was a hit with audiences who enjoyed their glamorous personas. In 1913, the Dolly Sisters decided to try to forge separate careers. Rosie appeared in The Whirl of the World on stage while Jenny teamed up with dancer Harry Fox (whom she married in 1912) in Honeymoon Express. Jenny and Fox also toured the vaudeville circuit as a dance duo. Both sisters made their film debuts in 1915: Jenny starred in The Call of the Dance and Rose appeared opposite Lillian Gish in Lily and the Rose (later reissued as The Tiger Lady). The sisters re-teamed in 1916 to appear in Ziegfeld's Midnight Frolic and returned to vaudeville where they commanded $2,000 a week. In 1918, they appeared in their only film together, the semi-autobiographical The Million Dollar Dollies. After World War I ended, the Dolly Sisters moved to France where they bought a chateau. They toured the theaters and dance halls of Europe and were courted by numerous wealthy men and royalty including Carol II of Romania, Christian X of Denmark and Alfonso XIII of Spain. On several occasions, the sisters would team up with male dance partners and sell tickets to the performances on the same night in order to create rivalry that would boost ticket sales. As their success continued throughout the early 1920s, they were able to command high salaries. During one engagement at the Moulin Rouge in Paris, the sisters were paid $1,200 a night.#DollySisters #ZiegfeldFollies #FricPic #ZiegfeldMidnightFrolic

Dorothy Stone - Ziegfeld Follies & Vaudeville Performer
Biography:
(1905-1974), daughter of Fred Stone the foremost acrobatic comedian in the early 20th-century theater, was 19 when she received her first Broadway credit, appearing with her father in the Jerome Kern musical, "Stepping Stones." She followed up playing the lead, Dolly Day, the heroine in 1926’s "Criss Cross, in which her father rescues her on a trapeze, while she warbled Kern melodies. Fred & Dorothy were slated to star in 1928’s "Three Cheers," but illness sidelined the aging tumbler and Will Rogers stepped in to keep the show on the board for 210 performances. Dorothy was nothing if not loyal to family. She starred with her father in two musicals in the 1930s, and her husband, dancer Charles Collins, on two occasions. A versatile performer, her industry in improving her from show to show was noted by reviewers; by 1932 she had trained herself to be one of the distinctive musical comedy stylists in New York. She was celebrated for her spirited dancing–"very blithe and handsome"–with a certain amount of coyness with partners and the audience. Producers regarded her a trooper, and she was first on the call list when a temperamental leading lady exited. . In 1929 she took over the lead of "Showgirl" after Ruby Keeler quit and revitalized a flagging show. She took over for Marilyn Miller in "As Thousands Cheer." Her resilience and "can-do" spirit apparently were a life long attribute. In 1921, when working as an acrobatic rider in a Wild West Show with her father, she was kicked by a horse during the matinee. The 16 year old performer, despite her bruises, performed in the evening show. When not performing in musicals during the 1930s she was a vaudeville headliner. Her final Broadway lead was in a wildly successful 1945 revival of Victor Herbert’s "The Red Mill." Her film career was not auspicious, but some sense of her talent can be had from scenes in 1934’s "Paree Paree." Picture by Alfred Cheney Johnston. #DorothyStone #Showgirl1929 #ACJ #FricPic #Colorized

House Cat: Inspirational Interiors & The Elegant Felines Who Call Them Home by Paul Barbera with Rafael Waack. Thames & Hudson, 2024. 9781760764036. 240pp. https://www.powells.com/book/-9781760764036?partnerid=34778&p_bt
This is a follow-up to Barbera's Where They Purr features US cats (and interiors). In his introduction he calls out Lady Penelope as one of his favorite subjects -- there's a reproduction of Sputnik in the living room of her place, a penthouse in New York City's financial district that also includes an adult-sized slide, a lamp that looks like a small horse, and the coolest place for a cat to take a nap I've ever seen. My favorite space is the one in Chelsea, New York, that's filled with more books and cats (three) than my wife would ever allow. The shelves are amazing, but so are the stacks of books that seem to function as furniture. Amen.
Includes a visual table of contents featuring cats, plus a number of photos of each interior/cat habitat, words describing the space and its occupants (ranging from one to nine in number), and a Q&A about the cat(s) in that chapter.

Brox Sisters were in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1927!

The Brox Sisters were an American trio of singing sisters, enjoying their greatest popularity in the 1920s and early 1930s. The sisters were: Lorayne (born Eunice 1901 – 1993) Bobbe or Dagmar (born Josephine Brock 1902 – 1999) & Patricia (born Kathleen 1904 – 1988).
The family name “Brock” was changed to “Brox” for theater marquees. The trio grew up in Tennessee and retained Southern accents during their performing careers.
They began in the 1910s touring the Vaudeville circuit in the United States and Canada. At the start of the 1920s they achieved success in New York on the Broadway stage. They were featured in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1927. Near the end of the decade they relocated to Los Angeles.
The act broke up in the early 1930s after the sisters got married. They made their final professional reunion appearance on radio in 1939.

Ruth Etting [ACJ], The Ziegfeld Historical Follies Star, was a beautiful singing star and actress of the 1920s and 1930s, before her career was ruined by a scandal. Making her Broadway debut in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1927 (reportedly, Irving Berlin suggested Etting for the show and she was hired after Ziegfeld checked her ankles, not her voice). Her run on Broadway eventually led her to Hollywood where she appeared in several short films and three feature length films, most notably, Roman Scandals which was her breakthrough film also featuring Eddie Cantor and Lucille Ball.
In 1918 she met Moe "The Gimp" Snyder, a gangster from Chicago. They were married by 1922 and Moe managed her career for the next two decades. However, by 1937, love fizzled with Moe and instead Etting fell in love with her accompanist, Mryl Alderman. In a rage Alderman was shot by Snyder, he survived, Snyder went to jail and Ruth divorced him so she could marry Alderman. But the scandal was too much for her career to survive. Despite a few attempts at a comeback, Etting's days as America’s Sweetheart of Song were over. In 1955 her story was made into a movie, Love Me or Leave Me starring Doris Day and James Cagney. It won an Academy Award for Best Story. #ZiegfeldFollies #ACJ #RuthEtting #IrvingBerlin #FricPic #Colorized #CoffeeTableBook

If you didn't get any books that wowed you for the holidays, these three volumes of The Illustrators series would be a great end of December gift to yourself. Each has a mix of text (biography and bits about the artist's work), finished illustrations, and sketches.
Tove Jansson (The Illustrators) by Paul Gravett. Series consultant Quentin Blake. Series Editor Claudia Zeff. Thames & Hudson, 2022. 9780500094334. 112pp. http://www.powells.com/book/-9780500094334?partnerid=34778&p_bt
This volume has a few bits of non-Moomin work, including a self-portrait in oils, though most of the illustrations are of Jansson's most famous characters. There are, unfortunately, only a few early versions of her illustrations for The Hobbit inside.
Posy Simmonds (The Illustrators) by Paul Gravett. Series consultant Quentin Blake. Series Editor Claudia Zeff. Thames & Hudson, 2019. 9780500022139. 112pp. https://www.powells.com/book/-9780500022139?partnerid=34778&p_bt
Simmonds started making comics when she was very young, and there are examples from when she was nine or ten. The book places more emphasis on her editorial illustrations and comics for adults (Cassandra Darke, Gemma Bovary, Tamara Drewe, and Mrs. Weber's Diary) than her picture book illustrations, though I probably wouldn't give this book to a child. My favorite drawing in the book is of her workspace.
Ludwig Bemelmans (The Illustrators) by Quentin Blake and Laurie Britton Newell. Series consultant Quentin Blake. Series Editor Claudia Zeff. Thames & Hudson, 2019. 9780500519950. 112pp. https://www.powells.com/book/-9780500519950?partnerid=34778&p_bt
The fantastic thing about many of Bemelmans' art is that they're so simple that it's easy to see how they were drawn, yet so elegant that it's also easy to see his genius. I loved Madeline before I picked this up, but this book made me a fan, and now I'm out to track down a few of his other books that I first saw here.
(Each volume includes a chronology, selected bibliography, and index at the back.)
