The Sequels. I really liked tfa, and the potential it had. We were going to have a black ex-stormtrooper turned jedi protagonist, a latino pilot who had an interesting backstory involving a military legacy, and a woman with force sensitivity and an unknown backstory. Instead we ended up with... well *guestures vaguely*

BASICS

I’m Ami! I’m 20, my pronouns are she/they. I am a disabled non-binary woc (no that’s not an oxymoron), and am bisexual. 

I am latine (mestize centroamericana) and desi (jain)! I speak spanish fluently, though my dialect is an odd mix of central american, caribbean (by proximity to lots of dominicans and boricuas), colombian (from medellin specifically), and repressed old lady (it’s because of a curse in my family it’s since been broken don’t worry). I also suffer from the gringo latine phenomenon of very little formal schooling in spanish, entonces no recuerdo como escribir en español, porque cuando terminé de ir a mi escuela bilingue, no sabia como teclar, entonces cuando escribo en español, especialmente con alguna forma de computadora; sea computadora o telefono...no lo se como hacerlo. Y como soy centroamericana y nosotros tragamos las consonantes, no se como deletrear palabras. Y con todo los homofonos que existan en espanol e ingles, no recuerdo las reglas, y entonces tengo escrito telefone en una papel de ingles!

Hey i saw your atla live cast post, and it got me thingkin about representation cos the voice actor for katara, aang,sokka, etc are white when the cartoon is not. Do you think its part of culture approrpiation? Because i think if atla was played in the present there'll be some protest claiming the show is whitewashing. Sorry for the long post i just want to know your opinion. Thanks anyway~

Thanks for the question Anon! Tis a tricky one. So this isprobably gonna be a lengthy answer so sit tight.

I’ve always applauded the amount of detail, research andjust overall representation in atla—and not just in racial representation butin all kinds. And I still love the atla cast, they’re the ones I grew up with. However,I agree with you, today this casting would probably stir up some questions.  Maybe I wouldn’t call it part of cultural appropriation per say? The show wasn’t ignorant about portraying the cultures it was based on, nor did they disrespect them, make them into a joke or take cultural aspects out of context—but that’s just my two cents.

But also, yeah I think they could’ve found pocvoice actors for more of the main characters. There’s no shortage of them. Movieslike Moana, Coco, The Book of Life have all been commended for not only representingcultures accurately but also hiring actors who represent said cultures. Tocontrast that, let’s not forget the backlash Kubo got because they had mostlywhite voice actors in it.

Of course I can’t speak for all minorities, especially sinceI don’t belong to any of the ones that atla was based on, but whenever someoneasks me something like this I ask myself the following:

I am Latina (Colombian, specifically), so if I saw aColombian/Latino animated role that was clearly based on my culture andcountry, would I be okay with a white actor (including any other actor that isn’tpart of that minority) to voice that role?

The short answer is no, I wouldn’t. Why? Because they can’tfully understand the complexities of my culture or my people. How can yourepresent a culture you were never raised in? How can you connect with acharacter whose personality and way they view the world is a product of a cultureyou have never experienced? A character based on my culture would react differently,approach problems differently, have different values, beliefs and perspectives thansomeone who was raised outside of that (granted a lot of this is also the jobof writers—this is where research and cultural consultants come in handy).

So yeah if you’re going to create an animated show where minoritiesmake up 100% of the cast like atla, it definitely wouldn’t hurt for the voiceactors to reflect that. And most definitely if you’re going to make a liveaction they should be as accurate as possible glaring at you M. Night Shitmalan
